Skin Cancer Detection Using Infrared Thermography: Measurement Setup, Procedure and Equipment

Infrared thermography technology has improved dramatically in recent years and is gaining renewed interest in the medical community for applications in skin tissue identification applications. However, there is still a need for an optimized measurement setup and protocol to obtain the most appropriate images for decision making and further processing. Nowadays, various cooling methods, measurement setups and cameras are used, but a general optimized cooling and measurement protocol has not been defined yet. In this literature review, an overview of different measurement setups, thermal excitation techniques and infrared camera equipment is given. It is possible to improve thermal images of skin lesions by choosing an appropriate cooling method, infrared camera and optimized measurement setup.

Registration of Dynamic Thermography Data of the Abdomen of Pregnant and Non-Pregnant Women

To date the use of thermography in the context of obstetrics has been primarily limited to the acquisition and analysis of static thermal images. In contrast, dynamic thermography involves the acquisition of a sequence of thermal images, taking into account temporal variations that would otherise be overlooked. However, dynamic recordings of regions of interest in human participants are likely to be affected by unavoidable participant movement due to breathing and other involuntary movements. In this work, a triangulation-based video registration technique using local affine transformations is proposed to register the abdominal region in dynamic thermal sequences. The proposed method is tested on one hour recordings of thermal data obtained from 10 pregnant and 10 non-pregnant female participants. The results obtained show that the proposed approach can compensate for movements and significantly improve region alignment throughout the thermal image sequence, thereby facilitating subsequent analysis of spatiotemporal temperature data in the considered image sequence.

Synchronization Design and Error Analysis of Near-Infrared Cameras in Surgical Navigation

The accuracy of optical tracking systems is important to scientists. With the improvements reported in this regard, such systems have been applied to an increasing number of operations. To enhance the accuracy of these systems further and to reduce the effect of synchronization and visual field errors, this study introduces a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based synchronization control method, a method for measuring synchronous errors, and an error distribution map in field of view. Synchronization control maximizes the parallel processing capability of FPGA, and synchronous error measurement can effectively detect the errors caused by synchronization in an optical tracking system. The distribution of positioning errors can be detected in field of view through the aforementioned error distribution map. Therefore, doctors can perform surgeries in areas with few positioning errors, and the accuracy of optical tracking systems is considerably improved. The system is analyzed and validated in this study through experiments that involve the proposed methods, which can eliminate positioning errors attributed to asynchronous cameras and different fields of view.

Heat transfer model for deep tissue injury: a step towards an early thermographic diagnostic capability

BACKGROUND

Deep tissue injury (DTI) is a class of serious lesions which develop in the deep tissue layers as a result of sustained tissue loading or pressure-induced ischemic injury. DTI lesions often do not become visible on the skin surface until the injury reaches an advanced stage, making their early detection a challenging task.

THEORY

Early diagnosis leading to early treatment mitigates the progression of the lesion and remains one of the priorities in clinical care. The aim of the study is to relate changes in tissue temperature with key physiological changes occurring at the tissue level to develop criteria for the detection of incipient DTIs.

METHOD

Skin surface temperature distributions of the damaged tissue were analyzed using a multilayer tissue model. Thermal response of the skin surface to a cooling stress, was computed for deep tissue inflammation and deep tissue ischemia, and then compared with computed skin temperature of healthy tissue.

RESULTS

For a deep lesion situated in muscle and fat layers, measurable skin temperature differences were observed within the first five minutes of thermal recovery period including temperature increases between 0.25 °C to 0.9 °C during inflammation and temperature decreases between -0.2 °C to -0.5 °C during ischemia.

CONCLUSIONS

The computational thermal models can explain previously published thermographic findings related to DTIs and pressure ulcers. It is concluded that infrared thermography can be used as an objective, non-invasive and quantitative means of early DTI diagnosis.
