Novel results on thiodiacetate zinc(II) complexes: Synthesis and structure of [Zn(tda)(phen)]2·5H2O

Coordination Compounds of Cu, Zn, and Ni with Dicarboxylic Acids and N Donor Ligands, and Their Biological Activity: A Review

Complexes of carboxylic acids are very often studied due to their interesting structural, spectral, and magnetic properties. This review is focused on complexes of four dicarboxylic acids, namely, 2,2'-thiodioacetic, 3,3'-thiodipropionic, 3,3'-dithiodipropionic, and fumaric acid. Many of the complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray analyses. Without the analyses, it is very difficult to predict the coordination mode of carboxylate groups or nitrogen ligands on central atoms. Thus, structural properties are also discussed, as well as potential applications.

Exploring catecholase activity in dinuclear Mn(ii) and Cu(ii) complexes: an experimental and theoretical approach

Two dinuclear Mn(ii) and Cu(ii) complexes were prepared, characterised and assessed for non-covalent interactions and catecholase oxidase properties. The catecholase activity of2is further corroborated by theoretical calculations using DFT.

Ammonium 2,2'-thiodiacetates - Selective and environmentally safe herbicides

2,2'-Thiodiacetic acid derivatives have a wide application potential, mainly in coordination chemistry. This research indicates that quaternary ammonium 2,2'-thiodiacetate salts may also be potent herbicidal agents used in agriculture. To provide a rationale for this statement, the toxic effect by a alkyl and aryl quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) on plant growth was investigated. The phytotoxicity of these compounds was tested against cultivated monocotyledonous (spring barley) and dicotyledonous (common radish) plants, whereas herbicidal activity was investigated in relation to popular weeds species (white goosefoot, sorrel and gallant-soldier). The results showed that aliphatic QASs possessed a low phytotoxicity to food crops and that some of them (in particular triethylammonium salt) had potent and selective herbicidal properties against common weeds, such as sorrel and gallant-soldier. However, the investigated compounds appeared to be ineffective herbicides against white goosefoot.

An influence of structural changes in ammonium cations on ecotoxicity of 2,2'-thiodiacetate mono and bis-salts

2,2'-Thiodiacetates with their excellent complexing properties may be used as metal extraction agents, fluorescent and superparamagnetic materials, antibacterial and anticancer medical agents, however there are no data concerning the environmental impact of 2,2'-thiodiacetates derivatives and data definying the potential hazard connected with their use. This study describes the ecotoxicity assessment of seven 2,2'-thiodiacetates with non-metallic, alkyl and aryl ammonium cations, which were obtained in an environmentally friendly, solvent-free syntheses. The ecotoxicity of these water soluble compounds was tested in aquatic and benthic environments using luminescent marine bacteria Vibrio fischeri (Microtox^® test) and the crustaceans Heterocypris incongruens (Ostracodtoxkit F™), respectively. The antimicrobial and antifungal activity against Trichoderma viridis, Aspergillus niger, Rhizoctonia solani and Escherichia coli was also investigated. The results showed how structural changes within ammonium cations themselves influence ecotoxicity: the QASs with alkylammonium cations exhibited a similar, rather low toxicity both to Vibrio fischeri and Heterocypris incongruens, and they would not pose a risk to these organisms in case of leakage. Higher toxicity was observed in case of two isoquinolinium salts, however it was rather associated with the heteroaromatic cation, than with the 2,2'-thiodiacetate anion.

Hydrogen-bonded assemblies in the molecular crystals of 2,2'-thiodiacetic acid with ethylenediamine and o-phenylenediamine

Carboxylate molecular crystals have been of interest due to the presence of hydrogen bonding, which plays a significant role in chemical and crystal engineering, as well as in supramolecular chemistry. Acid-base adducts possess hydrogen bonds which increase the thermal and mechanical stability of the crystal. 2,2'-Thiodiacetic acid (Tda) is a versatile ligand that has been widely explored, employing its multidendate and chelating coordination abilities with many metals; however, charge-transfer complexes of thiodiacetic acid have not been reported. Two salts, namely ethylenediaminium 2,2'-thiodiacetate, C₂H₁₀N₂²⁺·C₄H₄O₄S₂^2-, denoted Tdaen, and 2-aminoanilinium 2-(carboxymethylsulfanyl)acetate, C₆H₉N₂⁺·C₄H₅O₄S^-, denoted Tdaophen, were synthesized and characterized by IR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopies, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In these salts, Tda reacts with the aliphatic (ethylenediamine) and aromatic (o-phenylenediamine) diamines, and deprotonates them to form anions with different valencies and different supramolecular networks. In Tdaen, the divalent Tda^2- anions form one-dimensional linear supramolecular chains and these are extended into a three-dimensional sandwich-type supramolecular network by interaction with the ethylenediaminium cations. However, in Tdaophen, the monovalent Tda^- anions form one-dimensional zigzag supramolecular chains, which are extended into a three-dimensional supramolecular network by interaction with the 2-aminoanilinium cations. Thus, both three-dimensional structures display different ring motifs. The structures of these diamines, which are influenced by hydrogen-bonded assemblies in the molecular crystals, are discussed in detail.

Transition from isolated to interacting copper(ii) pairs in extended lattices evaluated by single crystal EPR spectroscopy

Single crystal EPR experiments in copper-doped dimeric Zn(tda)(phen) allowed determination of Cu(ii) g- and A-matrices and ZFS parameters, which are used to evaluate the interdimeric exchange interaction in pure Cu(tda)(phen).
