Abstract
Lewis acids are crucial in chemistry, with applications in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials science. In main-group chemistry, they offer alternatives to transition metals, prompting our study of halogenated boronic acid esters (BAEs). Although BAEs are well-known, their catalytic potential has been overlooked. Our investigation found their Lewis acidity superior to that of boron trifluoride and comparable to that of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane. Additionally, their catalysis of the Sakurai allylation of aldehydes has been documented, paving the way for future advancements.

Abstract
A geometrically flexible bifunctional (bis)aminophosphine ligand was synthesized in a three-component, one-pot Kabachnik-Fields reaction using tert butylphosphine, paraformaldehyde, and 3,5-dimethyl aniline. The product, bis((3,5-dimethylphenyl)aminomethyl) tert butylphosphine (ArBiAMP t Bu), containing two secondary amines and a tertiary phosphine, was isolated in good yields. Deprotonation of both N-H groups with (trimethylsilyl)methylpotassium (K-CH2SiMe3), followed by salt metathesis with LaI3, YI3, and LuI3 generated the corresponding MI(ArBiAMP t Bu)(thf)3 complexes (M = Y (1), La (2), and Lu (3)) in good yields. A sterically encumbered indene, 1,3-diisopropyl-4,7-dimethyl-1H-indene, iPrMeInd, was deprotonated in situ and installed via salt-metathesis to generate the organometallic series of η5-indenide complexes, M(ArBiAMP t Bu)(η5-iPrMeInd)(thf) (M = Y (4), La (5), and Lu (6)). 1H, 31P, 13C, and 89Y NMR experiments, IR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), were used to characterize these complexes. The Y-P coupling constant was found to be variable depending on the modifiable coordination environment of the metal center, indicating potential as both a spectroscopic handle as well as providing insight into the influence of additional ligands on the metal center.

Abstract
Starting from two different cyano-functionalized organoboranes, we demonstrate that 1,3-dipolar [3+2] azide-nitrile cycloaddition can serve to generate libraries of alkyl-tetrazole-functionalized compounds capable of intramolecular N→B-Lewis adduct formation. Due to the relatively low basicity of tetrazoles, structures can be generated that exhibit weak and labile N→B-coordination. The reaction furnishes 1- and 2-alkylated regio-isomers that exhibit different effective Lewis-acidities at the boron centers, and vary in their optical absorption and fluorescence properties. Indeed, we identified derivatives capable of selectively binding cyanide over fluoride, as confirmed by 11B NMR. This finding demonstrates the potentialities of this synthetic strategy to systematically fine-tune the properties of lead structures that are of interest as chemical sensors.

Abstract
The wide use of boronic compounds, especially boronic acids and benzoxaboroles, in virtually all fields of chemistry is related to their specific properties. The most important of them are the ability to form cyclic esters with diols and the complexation of anions. In both cases, the equilibrium of the reaction depends mainly on the acidity of the compounds, although other factors must also be taken into account. Quantification of the acidity (pKa value) is a fundamental factor considered when designing new compounds of practical importance. The aim of the current work was to collect available values of the acidity constants of monosubstituted phenylboronic acids, critically evaluate these data, and supplement the database with data for missing compounds. Measurements were made using various methods, as a result of which a fast and reliable method for determining the pKa of boronic compounds was selected. For an extensive database of monosubstituted phenylboronic acids, their correlation with their Brønsted analogues-namely carboxylic acids-was examined. Compounds with ortho substituents do not show any correlation, which is due to the different natures of both types of acids. Nonetheless, both meta- and para-substituted compounds show excellent correlation. From a practical point of view, acidity constants are best determined from the Hammett equation. Computational approaches for determining acidity constants were also analyzed. In general, the reported calculated values are not compatible with experimental ones, providing comparable results only for selected groups of compounds.

Abstract
We demonstrate the increased Lewis acidity on going from Sn(II) to Sn(IV) by oxidizing TpMe2SnOTf (OTf = SO3CF3) to TpMe2SnF(OTf)2. Replacement of the fluoride ion in TpMe2SnF(OTf)2 by a triflate, resulting in TpMe2Sn(OTf)3 further enhances the Lewis acidity at tin. 119Sn NMR spectroscopy, modified Gutmann-Beckett test, computational analysis, and catalytic phosphine oxide deoxygenation support the claims.

Abstract
A series of redox-responsive ferrocenyl-substituted boranes and boronic esters were synthesized. Oxidation of the ferrocenyl ligand to the ferrocenium resulted in a drastic increase in the Lewis acidity beyond the strength of SbF5 , which was investigated experimentally and computationally. The resulting highly Lewis acidic boron compounds were used for catalytic C-F and S-F bond activation.

Abstract
Lewis acidity of organoboronates [B(pin), B(neop), B(cat), B(eg), B(nad)] and organoboronamides [B(dan), B(aam), B(mdan)] has been found to be unifiedly evaluated by computed ammonia affinity (AA), while other methods [LUMO energies, global electrophilicity index (GEI), fluoride ion affinity (FIA)] were only partially applicable. The relationships between the AA values and such structural characters including the B-X bond lengths, the X-B-X angles, and the changes in the B-X bond lengths in the formation of the ammonia adducts were also described.

Abstract
Fluorinated boron species are a very important group of organoboron compounds used first of all as receptors of important bioanalytes, as well as biologically active substances, including Tavaborole as an antifungal drug. The presence of substituents containing fluorine atoms increases the acidity of boronic compounds, which is crucial from the point of view of their interactions with analytes or certain pathogen's enzymes. The review discusses the electron acceptor properties of fluorinated boronic species using both the acidity constant (pKa) and acceptor number (AN) in connection with their structural parameters. The NMR spectroscopic data are also presented, with particular emphasis on 19F resonance due to the wide range of information that can be obtained from this technique. Equilibria in solutions, such as the dehydration of boronic acid to form boroxines and their esterification or cyclization with the formation of 3-hydroxyl benzoxaboroles, are discussed. The results of the latest research on the biological activity of boronic compounds by experimental in vitro methods and theoretical calculations using docking studies are also discussed.

Abstract
IUPAC defines Lewis acidity as the thermodynamic tendency for Lewis pair formation. This strength property was recently specified as global Lewis acidity (gLA), and is gauged for example by the fluoride ion affinity. Experimentally, Lewis acidity is usually evaluated by the effect on a bound molecule, such as the induced 31 P NMR shift of triethylphosphine oxide in the Gutmann-Beckett (GB) method. This type of scaling was called effective Lewis acidity (eLA). Unfortunately, gLA and eLA often correlate poorly, but a reason for this is unknown. Hence, the strength and the effect of a Lewis acid are two distinct properties, but they are often granted interchangeably. The present work analyzes thermodynamic, NMR specific, and London dispersion effects on GB numbers for 130 Lewis acids by theory and experiment. The deformation energy of a Lewis acid is identified as the prime cause for the critical deviation between gLA and eLA but its correction allows a unification for the first time.

Abstract
Investigations on the boundaries between the neutral and cationic models of (Mesityl)2EX (E = Sb, Bi and X = Cl-, OTf-) have facilitated reversing the Lewis acidity from bismuth to antimony. We use this concept to demonstrate a higher efficiency of (Mesityl)2SbOTf over (Mesityl)2BiOTf in the catalytic reduction of phosphine oxides to phosphines. The experiments supported with computations described herein will find use in designing new Lewis acids relevant to catalysis.

Abstract
Recently, much scientific effort has been centered on the control of the ionic transport properties of solid state nanochannels and the rational design and integration of chemical systems to induce changes in the ionic transport by means of interactions with selected target molecules. Here, we report the fabrication of a novel nanofluidic device based on solid-state nanochannels, which combines silane chemistry with both track-etched and atomic layer deposition (ALD) technologies. Nanodevice construction involves the coating of bullet-shaped single-pore nanochannels with silica (SiO2) by ALD and subsequent surface modification by reaction between silanol groups exposed on pore walls and N-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)-gluconamide, in order to create a gluconamide-decorated nanochannel surface. The formation of a boroester derivative resulting from the selective reaction of borate with the appended saccharides leads to important changes in the surface charge density and, concomitantly, in the iontronic properties of the nanochannel. Furthermore, we propose a binding model to rationalize the specific interaction saccharide-borate in the surface. Besides, this unique nanodevice exhibits a highly selective and reversible response towards borate/fructose exposure. On the basis of the surface charge variation resulting from borate binding, the nanochannel can reversibly switch between "ON" and "OFF" states in the presence of borate and fructose, respectively. In addition, this work describes the first report of the functionalization of PET/SiO2 nanochannels by the ALD technique. We believe that this work provides a promising framework for the development of new nanochannel-based platforms suitable for multiple applications, such as water quality monitoring or directed molecular transport and separation.

Abstract
Three isomers of (trifluoromethoxy)phenylboronic acids were studied in the context of their physicochemical, structural, antimicrobial and spectroscopic properties. They were characterized by 1H, 13C, 11B and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The acidity of all the isomers was evaluated by both spectrophotometric and potentiometric titrations. The introduction of the -OCF3 group influences the acidity, depending, however, on the position of a substituent, with the ortho isomer being the least acidic. Molecular and crystal structures of ortho and para isomers were determined by the single crystal XRD method. Hydrogen bonded dimers are the basic structural motives of the investigated molecules in the solid state. In the case of the ortho isomer, intramolecular hydrogen bond with the -OCF3 group is additionally formed, weaker, however, than that in the analogous -OCH3 derivative, which has been determined by both X-Ray measurements as well as theoretical DFT calculations. Docking studies showed possible interactions of the investigated compounds with LeuRS of Escherichia coli. Finally, the antibacterial potency of studied boronic acids in vitro were evaluated against Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus.

Abstract
A novel β-diketiminate stabilized gallium hydride, (Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H (where (Dipp L)={HC(MeCDippN)2 }, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl and Ad=1-adamantyl), has been synthesized and shown to undergo insertion of carbon dioxide into the Ga-H bond under mild conditions. In this case, treatment of the resulting κ1 -formate complex with triethylsilane does not lead to regeneration of the hydride precursor. However, when combined with B(C6 F5 )3 , (Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H catalyses the reductive hydrosilylation of CO2 . Under stoichiometric conditions, the addition of one equivalent of B(C6 F5 )3 to (Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H leads to the formation of a 3-coordinate cationic gallane complex, partnered with a hydroborate anion, [(Dipp L)Ga(Ad)][HB(C6 F5 )3 ]. This complex rapidly hydrometallates carbon dioxide and catalyses the selective reduction of CO2 to the formaldehyde oxidation level at 60 °C in the presence of Et3 SiH (yielding H2 C(OSiEt3 )2 ). When catalysis is undertaken in the presence of excess B(C6 F5 )3 , appreciable enhancement of activity is observed, with a corresponding reduction in selectivity: the product distribution includes H2 C(OSiEt3 )2 , CH4 and O(SiEt3 )2 . While this system represents proof-of-concept in CO2 hydrosilylation by a gallium hydride system, the TOF values obtained are relatively modest (max. 10 h-1 ). This is attributed to the strength of binding of the formatoborate anion to the gallium centre in the catalytic intermediate (Dipp L)Ga(Ad){OC(H)OB(C6 F5 )3 }, and the correspondingly slow rate of the turnover-limiting hydrosilylation step. In turn, this strength of binding can be related to the relatively high Lewis acidity measured for the [(Dipp L)Ga(Ad)]+ cation (AN=69.8).

Abstract
Owing to specific formation of five-membered or six-membered cyclic esters between boric acid groups and cis-diol molecules, boric acid bearing fluorescent materials can not only selectively capture but also specifically identify cis-diol substances. In this work, a novel covalent organic framework containing boric acid groups (COF-BA) was prepared through post-modification via the aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. COF-BA with good stability, a permanent pore structure, a high specific surface area (606 m2 g-1) and a uniform pore size (2.59 nm) exhibited unique selectivity toward the cis-diol guest molecule 1,2-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione (1,2-Doa) with a high adsorption capacity of 177.95 mg g-1. However, as for the isomers of 1,2-Doa (1,4-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione and 2,6-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione), the corresponding uptake capacities are distinctively decreased to 40.86 mg g-1 and 3.05 mg g-1, respectively. It is worth noting that the COF-BA can be recovered and recycled. Moreover, because the formation of the quinoline enhanced the conjugation effect of the COF skeleton, it was unexpectedly found that COF-BA possessed an intrinsic fluorescence property and could be used as an optical sensor for 1,2-Doa.

Abstract
Several piperazine bis(benzoxaboroles) have been obtained both in solution as well as in the solid state. The environmentally friendly mechanochemical approach – hitherto not applied for the preparation of benzoxaboroles – was particularly beneficial in the case of two products afforded in low yields in solution. The in vitro studies showed high potential of the studied bis(fluorobenzoxaboroles) as antifungal agents, highlighting also the influence of the fluorine substituent position on their microbiological activity. The highest activity against A. niger, A. terreus, P. ochrochloron, C. tenuis and C. albicans was displayed by the analogue of the known benzoxaborole antifungal drug Kerydin® (Tavaborole). Several piperazine bis(benzoxaboroles) have been obtained mechanochemically – two of them have been shown to display high antifungal activity.![]()

Abstract
N-[(Z)-2-(2H-1,3,2-Benzodioxaborol-2-yl)-2-phenyl-ethen-yl]-N-(propan-2-yl)aniline, C23H22BNO2, contains a C=C bond that is conjugated with a donor and an acceptor group. An analysis that included similar push-pull olefins revealed that bond lengths in their B-C=C-N core units correlate with the perceived acceptor and donor strength of the groups. The two phenyl groups in the mol-ecule are rotated with respect to the plane that contains the BCCN atoms, and are close enough for significant π-stacking. Definite characterization of the title compound demonstrates, for the first time in a reliable way, that hydro-boration of ynamines with borandiol esters is feasible. Compared to olefin hydro-boration with borane, the ynamine substrate is activated enough to undergo reaction with the less active hydro-boration reagent catecholborane.

Abstract
The 1,8-naphthalenediolate [1,8-O2C10H8] supported boronic and boric acid esters of general formula X-B(1,8-O2C10H8), where X = C6H5 (1a), C6F5 (2a), 3,4,5-F3-C6H2 (3a), 2,4,6-F3-C6H2 (4a), 2,6-F2-C6H3 (5a), 2,6-Cl2-C6H3 (6a), 2,4,6-Me3-C6H2 (7a), 2,6-(MeO)3-C6H3 (8a), Bun (9a), MeO (10a), OH (11a) and Cl (13a), were synthesized, NMR spectroscopically characterized, and the solid-state structures of 1a-5a, 8a and 10a determined by X-ray crystallography. The acceptor numbers of 1a-7a and 13a were determined and found to be similar to their catecholate analogues, R-Bcat, indicating similar Lewis acidities of these two classes of boronic acid esters. The reaction of B2(NMe2)4 with 1,8-naphthalenediol, followed by addition of HCl furnished the diboronic acid ester B2(1,8-O2C10H8)4 (16a) in ca. 70% yield. Cl-B(1,8-O2C10H8) (13a) was shown to react with O[double bond, length as m-dash]PEt3, DMAP, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridine, resp., to give the boronium salts [(Et3P[double bond, length as m-dash]O)2B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (18a), [(DMAP)2B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (22a), [(2,2'-bipyridine)B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (23a) and [(1,10-phenanthroline)B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (24a), which were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The relative Lewis acidity of a variety of metal-ligand catalyst complexes is quantified using 31P NMR spectroscopy. Three 31P NMR probes, including two new bidentate binding probes, are compared on the basis of different binding modes (i.e., monodentate vs bidentate) and the relative scale of their downfield shift upon binding to Lewis acid complexes. Bidentate coordination of catalyst complexes including metal catalysts, ligands, and counterions were assessed due to their importance to asymmetric catalysis. The effect of ligands, counterions, and additives on Lewis acidity is quantified and correlated to reaction yield at an early time point as an approximation for catalytic activity/efficiency and chelation mode in two organic transformations. Binding studies were performed under catalytically relevant conditions, giving further applicability to synthesis. Insight into activation modes are revealed through this analysis.

Abstract
The hydrogen-bonding activation for 66 organocatalysts has been quantified using a 31P NMR binding experiment with triethylphosphine oxide (TEPO). Diverse structural classes, including phenols, diols, silanols, carboxylic acids, boronic acids, and phosphoric acids, were examined with a variety of steric and electronic modifications to understand how the structure and secondary effects contribute to hydrogen-bonding ability and catalysis. Hammett plots demonstrate high correlation for the Δδ 31P NMR shift to Hammett parameters, establishing the ability of TEPO binding to predict electronic trends. Upon correlation to catalytic activity in a Friedel-Crafts addition reaction, data demonstrate that 31P NMR shifts correlate to catalytic activity better than p Ka values. Boronic acids were investigated, and 31P NMR binding experiments predicted strong hydrogen-bonding ability, for which catalytic activity was confirmed, resulting in the greatest rate enhancement observed in the Friedel-Crafts addition of all organocatalysts studied. A detailed investigation supports that boronic acid activation proceeds through hydrogen-bonding interactions and not coordination with the Lewis acidic boron center. Using 31P NMR spectroscopy offers a simple and rapid tool to quantify and predict hydrogen-bonding abilities for the design and applications of new organocatalysts and supramolecular synthons.

Abstract
Abstract
Rapid development of research on the chemistry of boronic acids is connected with their applications in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, materials’ chemistry, biology and medicine. In many applications Lewis acidity of boron atoms plays an important role. Special group of arylboronic acids are fluoro-substituted compounds, in which the electron withdrawing character of fluorine atoms influences their properties. The present paper deals with fluoro-substituted boronic acids and their derivatives: esters, benzoxaboroles and boroxines. Properties of these compounds, i.e. acidity, hydrolytic stability, structures in crystals and in solution as well as spectroscopic properties are discussed. In the next part examples of important applications are given.

Abstract
5-Fluoro-2,1-benzoxaborol-1(3H)-ol, a potent antifungal drug also known as Tavaborole or AN2690, has been compared with its three isomers in terms of its activity against several fungi as well as pKa and multinuclear NMR characterization. The molecular and crystal structure of 6-fluoro-2,1-benzoxaborol-1(3H)-ol was determined and compared with that of AN2690.

Abstract
The paper presents results of a systematic NMR studies on fluorinated phenylboronic acids. All possible derivatives were studied. The experimental (1)H, (13)C, (19)F, (11)B, and (17)O spectral data were compared with the results of theoretical calculations. The relation between the calculated natural bond orbital parameters and spectral data (chemical shifts and coupling constants) is discussed. The first examples of (10)B/(11)B isotopic effect on the (19)F spectra and (4)JFO scalar coupling in organic compounds are reported.
