Frequently used, but still unknown: Terbium(III) tris-hexafluoroacetylacetonate dihydrate

Mechanochemical Syntheses of Ln(hfac)3(H2O)x (Ln = La-Sm, Tb): Isolation of 10-, 9-, and 8-Coordinate Ln(hfac)n Complexes

Volatile lanthanide coordination complexes are critical to the generation of new optical and magnetic materials. One of the most common precursors for preparing volatile lanthanide complexes is the hydrate with the general formula Ln(hfac)₃(H₂O)_x (x = 3 for La-Nd, x = 2 for Sm) (hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato). We have investigated the synthesis of Ln(hfac)₃(H₂O)_x using more environmentally sustainable mechanochemical approaches. Characterization of the products using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction shows substantial differences in product distribution between methods. The mechanochemical synthesis of the hydrate complexes leads to a variety of coordination compounds including the expected hydrate product, the known retro-Claisen impurity, and hydrated protonated Hhfac ligand depending on the technique employed. Surprisingly, 10-coordinate complexes of the form Na₂Ln(hfac)₅·3H₂O for Ln = La-Nd were also isolated from reactions using a mortar and pestle. The electrostatic bonding of lanthanide coordination complexes is a challenge for obtaining reproducible reactions and clean products. The reproducibility issues are most acute for the large, early lanthanides whereas for the mid to late lanthanides, reproducibility in terms of product distribution and yield is less of an issue because of their smaller size and greater charge to radius ratio. Ball milling increases reproducibility in terms of generating the desired Ln(hfac)₃(H₂O)_x along with hydrated Hhfac (tetraol) and free Hhfac products. The results illustrate the dynamic behavior of lanthanide complexes in solution and the solid state as well as the structural diversity available to the early lanthanides.

Mechanochemical reactions to prepare Ln(hfac)₃(H₂O)_x (Ln = La-Sm, Tb) complexes are used to illustrate the highly variable coordination chemistry of the early lanthanides compared to the mid-lanthanides. Using either a mortar and pestle or ball mill results in unexpected products and different product distributions. An open mortar and pestle can yield 10-coordinate pentakis-hfac complexes of La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, whereas ball milling consistently results in Ln(hfac)₃(H₂O)_x complexes with volatile Hhfac and hydrated Hhfac·2H₂O (tetraol) that can be removed by vacuum.

[Tb4(OH)4]-Cuboid Complex Dianion Stabilized with Six Carboxylate Bridges and Four Diketonate Caps

A cubane-like complex dianion [Tb4(OH)4(tfa)6(hfac)4]2− was synthesized, accompanied by two counter cations of [Ni(hfac)(2pyIN)2]+, where Htfa, Hhfac, and 2pyIN stand for trifluoroacetic acid, 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione, and 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-pyridylimidazolin-1-oxyl, respectively. In the complex anion, each Tb ion was capped with hfac, and each Tb···Tb diagonal was bridged with tfa, thus forming an approximate Td symmetry, though the whole molecular formula was crystallographically independent in an orthorhombic Pbca space group. The ionic charge was −2 in total. The magnetic study revealed that the complex ions were magnetically isolated from each other. Practically no 4f–4f superexchange interaction was operative, while the 2p–3d ferromagnetic coupling seemed to be appreciable, as anticipated from the proposed magnetostructural relationship.

The special case of the spectral emission of a Tb3+ mono metal complex

The fine structure in the spectral lines of the visible fluorescence of Tb 3+  complexes are replaced by a single peak in the case of a singular molecular complex Tb(H 3 PTC) 3  , where H 4 PTC represents perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid, and its emission wavelength depends on the film thickness. This single peak challenges the old creed that the f-orbital electrons of Tb 3+  are always protected from the influence of the surrounding atoms. We perform density functional theory calculations to show that the wavefunction of the ground state is localized and in addition, spin-polarized, and this facilitates fluorescent transitions under UV to the first excited state instead of the fundamental state. We discuss the possibility of making a spintronic device with the molecule, Tb(H 3 PTC) 3  .

Single-chain magnet behavior in a finite linear hexanuclear molecule

The careful monitoring of crystallization conditions of a mixture made of a TbIII building block and a substituted nitronyl-nitroxide that typically provides infinite coordination polymers (chains), affords a remarkably stable linear hexanuclear molecule made of six TbIII ions and five NIT radicals. The hexanuclear units are double-bridged by water molecules but ab initio calculations demonstrate that this bridge is inefficient in mediating any magnetic interaction other than a small dipolar antiferromagnetic coupling. Surprisingly the hexanuclears, despite being finite molecules, show a single-chain magnet (SCM) behavior. This results in a magnetic hysteresis at low temperature whose coercive field is almost doubled when compared to the chains. We thus demonstrate that finite linear molecules can display SCM magnetic relaxation, which is a strong asset for molecular data storage purposes because 1D magnetic relaxation is more robust than the relaxation mechanisms observed in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) where under-barrier magnetic relaxation can operate.

Self-assembly of a terbium(III) 1D coordination polymer on mica

The terbium(III) ion is a particularly suitable candidate for the creation of surface-based magnetic and luminescent devices. In the present work, we report the epitaxial growth of needle-like objects composed of [Tb(hfac)₃·2H₂O] _n (where hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) polymeric units on muscovite mica, which is observed by atomic force microscopy. The needle-like shape mimics the structure observed in the crystalline bulk material. The growth of this molecular organization is assisted by water adsorption on the freshly air-cleaved muscovite mica. This deposition technique allows for the observation of a significant amount of nanochains grown along three preferential directions 60° apart from another. The magnetic properties and the luminescence of the nanochains can be detected without the need of surface-dedicated instrumentation. The intermediate value of the observed luminescence lifetime of the deposits (132 µs) compared to that of the bulk (375 µs) and the CHCl₃ solution (13 µs) further reinforces the idea of water-induced growth.
