A review on existing and emerging approaches for textile wastewater treatments: challenges and future perspectives

This comprehensive review explores the complex environment of textile wastewater treatment technologies, highlighting both well-established and emerging techniques. Textile wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge, containing diverse contaminants and chemicals. The review presents a detailed examination of conventional treatments such as coagulation, flocculation, and biological processes, highlighting their effectiveness and limitations. In textile industry, various textile operations such as sizing, de-sizing, dyeing, bleaching, and mercerization consume large quantities of water generating effluent high in color, chemical oxygen demand, and solids. The dyes, mordants, and variety of other chemicals used in textile processing lead to effluent variable in characteristics. Furthermore, it explores innovative and emerging techniques, including advanced oxidation processes, membrane filtration, and nanotechnology-based solutions. Future perspectives in textile wastewater treatment are discussed in-depth, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary research, technological advancements, and the integration of circular economy principles. Numerous dyes used in the textile industry have been shown to have mutagenic, cytotoxic, and ecotoxic potential in studies. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the methods used to remediate textile waste water. Major topics including the chemical composition of textile waste water, the chemistry of the dye molecules, the selection of a treatment technique, the benefits and drawbacks of the various treatment options, and the cost of operation are also addressed. Overall, this review offers a valuable resource for researchers and industry professionals working in the textile industry, pointing towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.

Impact of Natural Organic Matter Competition on the Adsorptive Removal of Acetochlor and Metolachlor from Low-Specific UV Absorbance Surface Waters

Although activated carbon adsorption is a very promising process for the removal of organic compounds from surface waters, the removal performance for nonionic pesticides could be adversely affected by co-occurring natural organic matter. Natural organic matter can compete with pesticides during the adsorption process, and the size of natural organic matter affects the removal of pesticides, as low-molecular-weight organics directly compete for adsorbent sites with pesticides. This study aims to investigate the competitive impact of low-molecular-weight organics on the adsorptive removal of acetochlor and metolachlor by four commercial powdered activated carbons. The adsorption features of selected powdered activated carbons were evaluated in surface water samples collected from the influent stream of the filtration process having 2.75 mg/L organic matter and 0.87 L/mg-m specific UV absorbance. The adsorption kinetics and capacities were examined by employing pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models and modified Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models to the experimental data. The competitive removal of acetochlor and metolachlor in the presence of natural organic matter was evaluated for varied powdered activated carbon dosages on the basis of UV and specific UV absorbance values of adsorbed organic matter. The adsorption data were well represented by the modified Freundlich isotherm, as well as pseudo-second-order kinetics. The maximum organic matter adsorption capacities of the modified Freundlich isotherm were observed to be 120.6 and 127.2 mg/g by Norit SX Ultra and 99.5 and 100.6 mg/g by AC Puriss for acetochlor- and metolachlor-containing water samples, respectively. Among the four powdered activated carbons, Norit SX Ultra and AC Puriss provided the highest natural organic matter removal performances with 76 and 72% and 71 and 65% for acetochlor- and metolachlor-containing samples, respectively. Similarly, Norit SX Ultra and AC Puriss were very effective for adsorbing aromatic organics with higher than 80% specific UV absorbance removal efficiency. Metolachlor was almost completely removed by higher than 98% by Norit SX Ultra, Norit SX F Cat, and AC Puriss, even at low adsorbent dosages. However, an adsorbent dose of 100 mg/L and above should be added for all powdered activated carbons, except for Norit SX F Cat, for achieving an acetochlor removal performance of higher than 98%. The competition between low-molecular-weight organics (low-specific UV absorbance) and acetochlor and metolachlor was more apparent at low adsorbent dosages (10-75 mg/L).

An advanced treatment process for 3-high wastewater discharged from crude oil storage tanks

The wastewater discharged from crude oil storage tanks (WCOST) contains high concentrations of salt and metal iron ions, and high chemical oxygen demand (COD). It belongs to "3-high" wastewater, which is difficult for purification. In this study, WCOST treatments were comparatively investigated via an advanced pretreatment and the traditional coagulation-microfiltration (CMF) processes. After WCOST was purified through the conventional CMF process, fouling occurred in the microfiltration (MF) membrane, which is rather harmful to the following reverse osmosis (RO) membrane unit, and the effluent featured high COD and UV254 values. The analysis confirmed that the MF fouling was due to the oxidation of ferrous ions, and the high COD and UV254 values were mainly attributable to the organic compounds with small molecular sizes, including aromatic-like and fulvic-like compounds. After the pretreatment of the advanced process consisting of aeration, manganese sand filtration, and activated carbon adsorption in combination with CMF process, the removal efficiencies of organic matter and total iron ions reached 97.3% and 99.8%, respectively. All the water indexes of the effluent, after treatment by the advanced multi-unit process, meet well the corresponding standard. The advanced pretreatment process reported herein displayed a great potential for alleviating the MF membrane fouling and enhanced the lifetime of the RO membrane system in the 3-high WCOST treatment.

Synthesis of Pr3+-doped WO3 particles: correlation between photoluminescent and photocatalytic properties

The WO3 and WO3:Pr3+ particles were successfully synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The XRD analysis with Rietveld refinement revealed the formation of a monoclinic phase for WO3 and for doped samples, this result was later confirmed by Raman spectroscopy studies. The presence of Pr3+ in the WO3 crystalline lattice induced structural and optical changes in the particles, increasing the crystallite size, distorting the clusters (shortening of the W-O bonds), favoring the crystallinity and changing the optical gap. The predominant morphology of the particles of WO3 and WO3:Pr3+ obtained was nanocubes constituted by the superposition of plates of nanometric thicknesses. The photoluminescence of WO3 and WO3:Pr3+ was produced by the existence of surface defects in the particles. The increase in the concentration of Pr3+ promoted an increase in the intensity of PL, due to the increase in the rate of recombination of electron/hole charges. The WO3 sample exhibited emission in the white region due to the adjustment of simultaneous electronic transitions in the blue, green and red regions, characteristic of the broadband spectrum. The interval of the 2.65 eV gap band and the high efficiency in the separation of the photogenerated charges (e-/h+) with the low recombination rate contributed to the photocatalytic degradation of Crystal Violet (CV) by the catalyst. The WO3:4% Pr3+ sample showed the best photocatalytic efficiency, degrading 73% of the CV dye in 80 minutes. This result was associated with a reduction in particle size and density of oxygen vacancies on the material surface.

Thermodynamics of Azo Dye Adsorption on a Newly Synthesized Titania-Doped Silica Aerogel by Cogelation: A Comparative Investigation with Silica Aerogels and Activated Charcoal

The adsorption isotherms of azo dyes on a newly synthesized titania-doped silica (TdS) aerogel compared to silica aerogels and activated charcoal (AC) are systematically investigated. Monolithic TdS aerogels were synthesized by the cogelation process followed by supercritical drying of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a gel precursor and titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) as a metal complex precursor for co-polymerization in ethanol solvent. An acid-base catalyst was used for the hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS and TTIP. The effect of Ti⁴⁺ doping in a silica aerogel on the mesoporous structure and the adsorption capacity of methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes were evaluated from the UV-vis absorption spectra. In order to compare the adsorption isotherms, the surface areas of silica and TdS aerogels were first normalized with respect to AC, as adsorption is a surface phenomenon. The azo dye equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using different isotherm equations and found to follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities for the adsorbent TdS aerogel normalized with the AC of the Langmuir isotherm are 131.58 and 159.89 mg/g for MB and CV dyes, respectively. From the Langmuir curve fitting, the Q _max value of the TdS aerogel was found to increase by 1.22-fold compared to AC, while it increased 1.25-1.53-fold compared to the silica aerogel. After four cycles, regeneration efficiency values for MB and CV dyes are about 84 and 80%, respectively. The study demonstrates the excellent potential and recovery rate of silica and TdS aerogel adsorbents in removing dyes from wastewater. The pore volume and average pore size of the new aerogel, TdS, were found to be lower than those of the silica aerogel. Thus, a new TdS aerogel with a high capacity of adsorption of azo dyes is successfully achieved.

Enhanced activation of PMS by a novel Fenton-like composite Fe3O4/S-WO3 for rapid chloroxylenol degradation

Chloroxylenol (PCMX) is widely used as disinfectant since the epidemic outbreak due to its effective killing of Covid-19 virus. Its stable chemical properties make it frequently detected in surface water. Herein, we successfully modified Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with S-WO₃ (X-Fe₃O₄/S-WO₃) to accelerate the Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ cycle. The composite has outstanding PCMX degradation and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) decomposition efficiency over a wide pH range (3.0 ∼ 9.0). 80-Fe₃O₄/S-WO₃/PMS system not only increased PMS decomposition efficiency from 27.7% to 100.0%, but also realized an enhancement of PCMX degradation efficiency by 16 times in comparison with that of Fe₃O₄ alone. The catalyst utilization efficiency reached 0.3506 mmol∙g^-1∙min^-1 which stands out among most Fenton-like catalysts. The composite has excellent degradation ability to a variety of emerging pollutants, such as antibiotics, drugs, phenols and endocrine disrupters, and at least a 90% removal efficiency reached in 10 min. The degradation of PCMX was dominated by HO^•, SO₄ ^•- and ¹O₂. The degradation pathways of PCMX were analyzed in detail. The component WS₂ in S-WO₃ plays a co-catalytic role instead of WO₃. And the exposed active W⁴⁺ _surf. efficiently enhanced the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ cycle, thereby complete PMS decomposition and high catalytic efficiency were achieved. Our findings clarify that applying two-dimensional transition metal sulfide WS₂ to modify heterogeneous Fe₃O₄ is a feasible strategy to improve Fenton-like reaction and provide a promising catalyst for PCMX degradation.

Tungsten oxide polymorphs and their multifunctional applications

Owing to the natural abundance, easy availability, high stability, non-stoichiometry, and chemical diversity, considerable interest has been devoted to tungsten oxide (WO_3-x) nanomaterials, and many advances have been achieved ranging from traditional catalysts and electronics to emerging artificial intelligence. This review focuses on recent progress of WO_3-x polymorphs and their multifunctional applications. The structural diversity and crystal phase transitions of WO_3-x and recent advances on the general synthesis of various WO_3-x nanostructures are first summarized, since the crystal structure and morphology adjustment obviously affect the physiochemical merits of WO_3-x materials. Then, their applications and related mechanisms in different fields are demonstrated, such as gas sensing, chromogenic (electro-, photo-, gaso-, and thermochromic), photocatalytic (pollutant degradation and water splitting), and emerging applications (biomedical, antibiotic, and artificial intelligence). With the advances highlighted here and the ongoing research efforts, the continuous breakthrough in functionalized WO_3-x nanostructure and their attractive applications is foreseeable in the future.

Tandem Structures Semiconductors Based on TiO2_SnO2 and ZnO_SnO2 for Photocatalytic Organic Pollutant Removal

The photocatalyst materials correlation with the radiation scenario and pollutant molecules can have a significant influence on the overall photocatalytic efficiency. This work aims to outline the significance of optimizing the components mass ratio into a tandem structure in order to increase the photocatalytic activity toward pollutant removal. ZnO_SnO2 and TiO2_SnO2 tandem structures were obtained by the doctor blade technique using different mass ratios between the components. The samples contain metal oxides with crystalline structures and the morphology is influenced by the main component. The photocatalytic activity was tested using three radiation scenarios (UV, UV-Vis, and Vis) and two pollutant molecules (tartrazine and acetamiprid). The results indicate that the photocatalytic activity of the tandem structures is influenced by the radiation wavelength and pollutant molecule. The TiO2_SnO2 exhibit 90% photocatalytic efficiency under UV radiation in the presence of tartrazine, while ZnO_SnO2 exhibit 73% photocatalytic efficiency in the same experimental conditions. The kinetic evaluation indicate that ZnO_SnO2 (2:1) have a higher reaction rate comparing with TiO2_SnO2 (1:2) under UV radiation in the presence of acetamiprid.
