Towards negotiation as a framework for health promoting technology

In this paper we reflect on the findings of three empirical studies of health-related behavioural change and existing work in the technological and sociomedical domains, to critique emerging technological approaches to promoting health-related behavioural change. The critique challenges what appear to be implicit assumptions about technology's role in promoting health-related behavioural change. It prompts a consideration of whose agenda in being pursued, whose values are being encapsulated, and argues for a rethink and reorientation of technological interventions in this domain. As an alternative to the existing approach we suggest a shift in focus from behavioural change to health promotion, and offer negotiation as a potential framework for future innovations in this area.

The control of environmental tobacco smoke: a policy review

According to World Health Organisation figures, 30% of all cancer deaths, 20% of all coronary heart diseases and strokes and 80% of all chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are caused by cigarette smoking. Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) exposure has also been shown to be associated with disease and premature death in non-smokers. In response to this environmental health issue, several countries have brought about a smoking ban policy in public places and in the workplace. Countries such as the U.S., France, Italy, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands, Sweden, Scotland, Spain, and England have all introduced policies aimed at reducing the population exposure to ETS. Several investigations have monitored the effectiveness of these smoking ban policies in terms of ETS concentrations, human health and smoking prevalence, while others have also investigated a number of alternatives to smoking ban policy measures. This paper reviews the state of the art in research, carried out in the field of ETS, smoking bans and Tobacco Control to date and highlights the need for future research in the area.

Advances in adult asthma diagnosis and treatment and health outcomes, education, delivery, and quality in 2008

In 2008 the Journal reported new findings in management of asthma. Dosing schedules of inhaled steroids have been modified and individualized. New, more costly propellants are replacing ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons. An association of asthma with pneumococcal disease has been observed. Smoking bans in public places are eliminating second-hand smoke and reducing asthma-related emergency department visits among adults. In contrast with these advances, however, disparity in asthma morbidity persists: black persons compared with white persons have a 4-fold greater risk of an asthma-related emergency department visit.
