Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have been conducted on the relationship between depression and thyroid diseases and function, its causal relationship remains unclear. METHODS Using summary statistics of genome-wide association studies of European and East Asian ancestry, we conducted 2-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization to estimate the association between MDD and thyroid function (European: normal range TSH, T4, T3, fT4, TPOAb levels and TPOAb-positives; East Asian: T4) and thyroid diseases (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis), and used Mediation analysis to evaluate potential mediators (alcohol intake, antidepressant) of the association and calculate the mediated proportions. RESULTS It was observed a significant causal association between MDD on hypothyroidism (P = 8.94 × 10-5), hyperthyroidism (P = 8.68 × 10-3), and hashimoto's thyroiditis (P = 3.97 × 10-5) among European ancestry, which was mediated by Alcohol intake (alcohol intake versus 10 years previously for hypothyroidism (P = 0.026), hashimoto's thyroiditis (P = 0.042), and alcohol intake frequency for hypothyroidism (P = 0.015)) and antidepressant (for hypothyroidism (P = 0.008), hashimoto's thyroiditis (P = 0.010)), but not among East Asian ancestry (PMDD-hypothyroidism = 0.016, but β direction was different; PMDD-hyperthyroidism = 0.438; PMDD-hashimoto's thyroiditis = 0.496). There was no evidence for bidirectional causal association between thyroid function mentioned above and MDD among both ancestry (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSION We importantly observed a significant causal association between MDD on risk of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and hashimoto's thyroiditis among European ancestry, and Alcohol intake and antidepressant as mediators for prevention of hypothyroidism, hashimoto's thyroiditis attributable to MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The correlation between the endocrine system and bipolar disorder(BD) has been well recognized, yet the influence of neuroendocrine hormones on readmission risk post-hospitalization for BD remains largely unexplored. This retrospective cohort study was to scrutinize the impact of neuroendocrine functionality on the readmission of patients with BD post-hospitalization for mental disorders. METHODS The dataset was derived from the electronic medical records of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were conducted on all patients hospitalized for BD, and from 1 January 2017 to October 2022. RESULTS Of the 1110 eligible patients, 83 and 141 patients experienced psychiatric readmissions within 90 and 180 days post-discharge, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that high serum TSH levels (aOR = 1.079; 95%CI = 1.003-1.160) and thyroid disease comorbidities (aOR = 2.899; 95%CI = 1.303-6.452) were independently correlated with the risk of 90-day readmission; while increased serum TSH levels (aOR = 1.179; 95%CI = 1.081-1.287) represented a risk factor for 180-day readmission. These results indicate that high serum TSH levels and thyroid disease comorbidities may contribute to an elevated readmission risk in patients with BD following hospitalization. CONCLUSION Routinely evaluating and intervening in thyroid function is crucial in the treatment of BD, as it may aid in preventing re-hospitalization.

Abstract
Objective The treatment of bipolar disorder (BD) remains challenging. The study evaluated the impact of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis/hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis and glucose metabolism on the clinical outcomes in patients with bipolar depression (BD-D) and manic bipolar (BD-M) disorders. Methods The research design involved a longitudinal prospective study. A total of 500 BD patients aged between 18 and 65 years treated in 15 hospitals located in Western China were enrolled in the study. The Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) were used to assess the BD symptoms. An effective treatment response was defined as a reduction in the symptom score of more than 25% after 12 weeks of treatment. The score of symptoms was correlated with the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, the HPA axis hormone levels (adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol), and the HPT axis hormone levels (thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), free triiodothyronine (fT3), and free thyroxine (fT4)). Results In the BD-M group, the YMRS was positively correlated with baseline T4 (r = 0.349, p = 0.010) and fT4 (r = 0.335, p = 0.013) and negatively correlated with fasting insulin (r = -0.289, p = 0.013). The pre-treatment HOMA-IR was significantly correlated with adverse course (p = 0.045, OR = 0.728). In the BD-D group, the baseline MADRS was significantly positively correlated with baseline fT3 (r = 0.223, p = 0.032) and fT4 (r = 0.315, p = 0.002), while baseline T3 (p = 0.032, OR = 5.071) was significantly positively related to treatment response. Conclusion The HPT axis and glucose metabolism were closely associated with clinical outcomes at 12 weeks in both BD-D and BD-M groups. If confirmed in further longitudinal studies, monitoring T3 in BD-D patients and HOMA-IR for BD-M could be used as potential treatment response biomarkers.

Abstract
Objective Thyroid dysfunction (overt and subclinical) has been consistently linked to pregnancy adversity and abnormal fetal growth and development. Mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are frequently diagnosed during pregnancy and at postpartum, and emerging evidence suggests association with impaired offspring neurodevelopment and growth. This study aimed to examine potential associations between thyroid function and mood symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum. Design This is a prospective study measuring thyroid hormones and assessing mood symptoms by employing specific questionnaires in the same cohort of 93 healthy pregnant women at the 24th (2nd trimester) and 36th (3rd trimester) gestational weeks and at the 1st postpartum week. Methods Serum thyroid hormones, TSH, anti-TPO, and anti-Tg antibodies were measured at the 24th (2nd trimester) and 36th (3rd trimester) gestational weeks and at the 1st postpartum week. Specific validated questionnaires were employed at the same time-points to assess separately symptoms of anxiety [Generalized Anxiety Disorder Inventory (GADI), Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), STAI-State Anxiety inventory (STAI-S), STAI-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T)], depression [Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Stein’s Blues Scale (BLUES), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)], and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) [Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive scale (Y-BOCS)]. Results At the 2nd trimester, GADI score correlated negatively with FT3 (p < 0.010, r = −0.545) and positively with TSH (p < 0.050, r = 0.837) concentrations; GADI, PSWQ, EPDS and Y-BOCS scores correlated negatively with FT4 concentrations (p < 0.010, r = −0.768; p < 0.010, r = −0.384; p < 0.050, r = −0.364; p < 0.010, r = −0.544, respectively). At the 3rd trimester, BLUES score correlated positively with rT3 concentrations (p = 0.00, r = 0.89); GADI, EPDS, and Y-BOCS scores correlated negatively with FT4 concentrations (p = 0.001, r = − 0.468; p = 0.036, r = −0.39; p = 0.001, r = −0.625, respectively); GADI, STAI-S, and Y-BOCS scores correlated positively with TSH concentrations (p = 0.015, r = 0.435; p = 0.024, r = 0.409 p = 0.041, r = 0.389, respectively). At postpartum, PSWQ, STAI-T, EPDS, and BDI scores correlated positively with rT3 concentrations (p = 0.024, r = 0.478; p = 0.014, r = 0.527; p = 0.046, r = 0.44; p = 0.021, r = 0.556, respectively, Y-BOCS score correlated positively with TSH (p = 0.045, r = 0.43), and BLUES score correlated positively with anti-TPO antibody concentrations (p = 0.070, r = 0.586). Conclusion The reported findings demonstrate positive associations between low-normal thyroid function at the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy and postpartum with anxiety, depression, and OCD scores.

Abstract
AIMS Hypothyroxinaemia could be easily neglected if attention is paid only to patients with elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone. We aimed to assess the association between mirtazapine use and hypothyroxinaemia in patients affected by major depressive disorder. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University between January 2016 and December 2018. Patients affected by major depression disorder and admitted to the hospital for treatment during the study period and who had thyroid tests at admission and after treatment were included. Mirtazapine use during hospitalization was the exposure measure and newly developed hypothyroxinaemia was as the primary outcome and structure parameters of thyroid homeostasis were the secondary outcomes of this study. Log-binomial model was used to estimate the association between mirtazapine use and hypothyroxinaemia, after adjusting for potential confounding factors. RESULTS A total of 220 eligible patients were included in the final analysis. The incidence of hypothyroxinaemia in patients who used mirtazapine was higher (37.5%) than those patients who did not use (19.7%). The relative risk of developing hypothyroxinaemia was 1.70 (95% confidence interval: 1.21-2.43) for mirtazapine use, after adjusting for confounding factors. The degree of reduction in thyroid feedback quantile-based index in mirtazapine group was significantly greater than that in nonmirtazapine group. CONCLUSION Mirtazapine use was associated with the increased risk of developing hypothyroxinaemia. The underlying mechanism may be involved the changed central set point of thyroid homeostasis, in which pituitary was in a possibly impaired sensitivity to the lower level of thyroid hormones.

Abstract
AIMS To assess association between quetiapine treatment and risk of new-onset hypothyroidism in schizophrenia patients. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital in China between January 2016 and December 2018. Schizophrenia patients with normal thyroid tests at admission were included. Hypothyroidism, which was defined as thyroid-stimulating hormone >4.20 mU/L and free thyroxine <12.00 pmol/L, or on L-thyroxine prescriptions, was the outcome measure, and quetiapine treatment between admission and subsequent thyroid test was the exposure measure of this study. Adjusted relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the independent association of quetiapine treatment with risk of new-onset hypothyroidism. The dose-response association was further analysed by 3 quetiapine doses: low (≤<=0.2 g/d), medium (0.2-0.6 g/d), and high (>0.6 g/d). RESULTS A total of 2022 eligible patients were included in the final analysis. Sixty patients (15.0%) in the quetiapine group developed hypothyroidism, while 56 patients (3.5%) in the nonquetiapine group developed hypothyroidism. Relative risk (95% confidence interval) of developing hypothyroidism for quetiapine use was 4.01 (2.86-5.64) after adjusting for several potential confounding factors. A strong dose-response association between quetiapine use and risk of developing hypothyroidism was observed: adjusted relative risks (95% confidence intervals) were 1.00 (0.25-2.59), 4.22 (2.80-6.25) and 5.62 (3.66-8.38), respectively, for low-, medium- and high-dose quetiapine, as compared with no quetiapine. CONCLUSION Acute phase quetiapine treatment for schizophrenia patients was strongly associated with increased risk of developing new-onset hypothyroidism, with a clear dose-response association.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between thyroid function and tinnitus. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 was used. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTIONS A total of 1,165 participants ≥ 40 years old who were surveyed for the presence of tinnitus and underwent thyroid function tests were included. The presence of discomfort from tinnitus was defined as annoying tinnitus. The control group included participants with "no tinnitus" or "no discomfort from tinnitus." The participants were divided into the annoying tinnitus group and the control group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The associations of free thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) with annoying tinnitus were analyzed using logistic regression with complex sampling methods. Subgroup analyses were performed according to sex. RESULTS The low TSH level group had 2.35-fold greater odds of annoying tinnitus than the control group (95% confidence interval = 1.10-5.12, p = 0.027). Even in patients with a normal free thyroxine level, a low TSH level was related to 2.78-fold higher odds of annoying tinnitus (95% confidence interval = 1.21-6.38, p = 0.016). In subgroup analyses, this association was apparent in the female subgroup. The male subgroup did not show a relationship between low TSH levels and annoying tinnitus. CONCLUSIONS Subclinical hyperthyroidism was related to an increased risk of annoying tinnitus. This relationship was apparent in the female subgroup.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mood disorder that may lead to use of drugs, alcohol, and even suicide in acute cases. It has been shown that neurotransmitters and hormones have the same receptors and pathways in the mood area of the brain. Therefore, metabolic and biochemical changes are expected in MDD and, in such diseases, understanding the hormonal alterations would be extremely helpful in the management or treatment with hormone replacement therapy. We evaluated levels of cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), testosterone, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), free thyroxine index (FT4I), T3 resin uptake (T3RU), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) in 79 patients suffering from MDD and 71 healthy controls. The existence of MDD was confirmed by a face-to-face structured clinical interview. We started the investigation by taking a blood sample from the study population. Then, hormone levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Significant differences were found between TSH, FT4I, DHEA-S, ACTH, testosterone, and cortisol/DHEA-S ratio in MDD patients compared to the healthy controls. We also demonstrated a correlation between MDD recurrence and FT4I index and TSH, respectively. Regarding some hormonal changes in patients with MDD, hormonal shifts should be considered in the treatment or management of MDD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overt and subclinical thyroid dysfunction has been reported to be related to depression. Thyroid diseases have been known to occur more frequently in women. However, scarce data are available on effects and sex differences of changes in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, with a normal range of thyroid hormones, on depression. This study aimed to investigate the association between TSH levels and depressive symptoms, according to sex, in individuals from the general population with free thyroxine (fT4) values within the normal range. METHODS Data from the 2014 Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were used for this study. The study population of 1651 Korean adults was categorized by tertiles of TSH levels. The presence of depressive symptoms was determined using a cut-off score of 5 in the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. RESULTS The highest TSH tertile group was 1.92 times more likely to have depressive symptoms in men after adjustment for covariates than the lowest TSH tertile (adjusted odds ratio: 1.92, 95% confidence interval: 1.11-3.31, P = 0.019). Contrastingly, the highest TSH tertile was associated with an approximately 35% lower prevalence of depressive symptoms in women (adjusted odds ratio: 0.65, 95% confidence interval: 0.43-0.97, P = 0.034). LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional design and unrecognized confounding factors, are the main limitations of our study. CONCLUSIONS Sex may play a substantial role in the relationship between TSH and depressive symptoms. Sex differences might be associated with differences in thyroid response, TSH blunting, thyroid autoimmunity, and sex hormone levels.

Abstract
While biomarkers have been used to define pathophysiological types and to optimize treatment in many areas of medicine, in psychiatry such biomarkers remain elusive. Based on previously described abnormalities of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function in severe forms of depression, we hypothesized that the temporal trajectory of basal cortisol levels would vary among individuals with depression due to heterogeneity in pathophysiology, and that cortisol trajectories that reflect elevated or increasing HPA activity would predict better response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). To test that hypothesis, we sampled scalp hair from 39 subjects with treatment-resistant depression just before ECT. Cortisol trajectory over the 12 weeks preceding ECT was reconstructed from cortisol concentrations in sequential hair segments. Cortisol trajectories varied widely between individuals, and exploratory analyses of clinical features revealed associations with melancholia and global severity. ECT non-responders showed a decreasing trajectory (mean change -25%, 95%-CI = [-1%,-43%]) during the 8 weeks preceding ECT (group-by-time interaction, p = 0.004). The association between cortisol trajectory and subsequent ECT response was independent of clinical features. A classification algorithm showed that cortisol trajectory predicted ECT response with 80% accuracy, suggesting that this biomarker might be developed into a clinically useful test for ECT-responsive depression. In conclusion, cortisol trajectory mapped onto symptoms of melancholia and independently predicted response to ECT in this severely depressed sample. These findings deserve to be replicated in a larger sample. Cortisol trajectory holds promise as a reliable, noninvasive, inexpensive biomarker for psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assessed the relationship between thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level and risk of depressive symptom in a population with no clinical or laboratory evidence of thyroid dysfunction. METHODS This retrospective cohort study included 13,017 subjects (7913 males and 5104 females), 17-84 years of age, who underwent health examinations at the hospital. Subjects had a Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) total score of ≤9 and fell within the normal range of free T4 levels at baseline. The association between gender-specific serum TSH tertile at baseline and the development of clinically significant depressive symptom (i.e., ≥19 BDI total score) on the follow-up visit was evaluated using the Cox proportional hazards model, with adjustment for demographic and life style factors. RESULTS The risk of depressive symptom was increased among subjects with the highest tertile TSH level (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 2.236; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.443-3.466; p<0.001) as compared with subjects with the lowest tertile in females, but not in males. Even among patients with normal TSH levels, females in the lowest-normal TSH tertile had a higher risk of depressive symptoms (adjusted HR, 2.279; 95% CI, 1.456-3.567; p<0.001) than did those in the highest tertile. The TSH level as a continuous variable significantly predicted the depressive symptoms in females (adjusted HR, 1.402; 95% CI, 1.002-1.812; p=0.027). CONCLUSIONS Our finding suggests that suboptimal thyroid function increases vulnerability to the occurrence of depressive symptom and represents a modifiable risk factor for depression in females.

Abstract
The lack of reliable outcome predictors and the delayed onset of therapeutic response to antidepressants are among the clinical challenges in the treatment of depression. Identifying clinical correlates associated with antidepressant response would reduce symptom severity and morbidity for patients with depression. Twenty-three subjects with major depression were treated with citalopram 20 mg/day in a 6-week open trial and were also simultaneously randomized to either adjunctive triiodothyronine (T3) 25 μg BID (n = 7), pindolol 5 mg BID (n = 8), or placebo (n = 8). Baseline thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), FT4, FT3, and TT3 were measured for potential relationships to treatment response across groups. In males only, there was a significant inverse correlation between baseline free T4 and time to response (r = -0.7, P = 0.034). In both males and females across all treatment conditions, as measured by Kaplan-Meier (K-M) maintenance failure time, baseline TSH below the mean (1.5 ng/dL) was associated with a shorter time to response (50% reduction in Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale [MADRS] score) (χ(2) = 4.53, df = 1, P = 0.03). Patients with baseline TSH above the mean were less likely to reach full remission (MADRS ≤ 7) (χ(2) = 4.38, df = 1, P = 0.03). No significant differences between groups emerged in the mean response time. Baseline thyroid function, as measured by serum free T4 and TSH, may predict a patient's response time to antidepressant treatment with citalopram.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones are crucial during development and in the adult brain. Of interest, fluctuations in the levels of thyroid hormones at various times during development and throughout life can impact on psychiatric disease manifestation and response to treatment. Here we review research on thyroid function assessment in schizophrenia, relating interrelations between the pituitary-thyroid axis and major neurosignaling systems involved in schizophrenia's pathophysiology. These include the serotonergic, dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic networks, as well as myelination and inflammatory processes. The available evidence supports that thyroid hormones deregulation is a common feature in schizophrenia and that the implications of thyroid hormones homeostasis in the fine-tuning of crucial brain networks warrants further research.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis dysfunction is relevant to the pathophysiology and clinical course of bipolar affective disorder. Hypothyroidism, either overt or more commonly subclinical, appears to the commonest abnormality found in bipolar disorder. The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction is also likely to be greater among patients with rapid cycling and other refractory forms of the disorder. Lithium-treatment has potent antithyroid effects and can induce hypothyroidism or exacerbate a preexisting hypothyroid state. Even minor perturbations of the HPT axis may affect the outcome of bipolar disorder, necessitating careful monitoring of thyroid functions of patients on treatment. Supplementation with high dose thyroxine can be considered in some patients with treatment-refractory bipolar disorder. Neurotransmitter, neuroimaging, and genetic studies have begun to provide clues, which could lead to an improved understanding of the thyroid-bipolar disorder connection, and more optimal ways of managing this potentially disabling condition.

In the eating disorders (ED) comorbid depression is common and clinical experience suggests that it is partly related to starvation. Starvation affects thyroid hormone status and thyroid hypofunction is in turn associated with depressed mood. We have therefore investigated the possibility that thyroid hormones and starvation are associated with mood in ED. Two-hundred and thirty-nine adolescent girls were examined at presentation of an ED. Analyses of thyroid hormones, documentation of weight and weight changes, self-reports of depressive symptomatology and clinical diagnoses of ED and depression were used in the analyses. Of the 239 girls 100 were diagnosed with depression. The girls with and without depression did not differ in age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), weight loss or duration of disease. Plasma free thyroxine concentrations were lower in depressed girls (11.9±1.7 versus 12.8±1.9 pmol/L; p<0.01). Plasma triodothyronine and thyroid-stimulating hormone concentrations did not differ between groups. In a logistic regression analysis the odds ratio for depression was 41.1 (95% confidence interval 4.18-405; p=0.001) for a 10 pmol/L change of plasma free thyroxine after correction for BMI, weight loss, duration of disease, rate of weight loss, plasma triodothyronine and an interaction between BMI and plasma free thyroxine. BMI did not predict depression. Low circulating thyroxine concentrations may provide a link between starvation and depression in adolescent girls with ED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is evidence that immune alterations play an important part in the pathogenesis of major depression. Thyroid autoimmunity has been found in association with major depression in several studies. AIM 1) to examine whether the prevalence of anti-thyroid peroxidase autoantibodies (anti-TPO) in depressive patients differs from that in healthy controls; 2) to investigate the possible relationship between thyroid autoimmunity, total T3, free T3, free T4, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), clinical status and treatment outcome in depression. METHOD The study group consisted of 129 outpatients (69.8% female; mean age 31.7+/-12.0 years) with major depressive disorder with a Montgomery-Azsberg Depression Rating Scale total score of 22 or higher and 72 healthy controls (62.5% female; mean age 31.7+/-13.1 years). The patients were treated with escitalopram 10-20 mg/day for 12 weeks using open-label placebo non-controlled design. Anti-TPO, total T3, free T3, free T4 and TSH were measured before the treatment. RESULTS The anti-TPO was found in eight (8.9%) depressive and two (4.8%) healthy females without statistical difference between these groups. Since anti-TPO was not seen in males, all further statistical analyses were carried out in females. At the end of week 12 of the treatment, 60 female patients (66.7%) were defined as responders and 30 depressive females (33.3%) showed insufficient response to treatment. Although there were no significant differences in the measurements between responders and non-responders, the last group showed a trend for a higher prevalence of anti-TPO compared with responders. CONCLUSION Thyroid autoimmunity might be a factor predicting treatment response to antidepressants in depressive patients.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones play a critical role in the metabolic activity of the adult brain, and neuropsychiatric manifestations of thyroid disease have long been recognised. However, it is only recently that methodology such as functional neuroimaging has been available to facilitate investigation of thyroid hormone metabolism. Although the role of thyroid hormones in the adult brain is not yet specified, it is clear that without optimal thyroid function, mood disturbance, cognitive impairment and other psychiatric symptoms can emerge. Additionally, laboratory measurements of peripheral thyroid function may not adequately characterise central thyroid metabolism. Here, we review the relationship between thyroid hormone and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with primary thyroid disease and primary mood disorders.

Abstract
A total of 62 patients with major depressive disorder were analyzed in the study. Patients were evaluated for 11 weeks in an open label design to investigate the differential effects of reboxetine, sertraline and venlafaxine on thyroid hormones. Serum thyrotrophin (TSH), thyroxine (T4) and free (f)T4 levels were measured before and after treatment. All groups showed significant improvement in HAM-D scores. TSH level significantly reduced and T4 level significantly increased in the reboxetine group, however TSH level significantly increased and T4 level significantly reduced in the sertraline group. Percent changes of TSH (p=0.007) and T4 (p=0.001) were significantly different between the reboxetine and sertraline groups. In the sertraline group, baseline TSH levels were correlated with response to treatment as determined by the change in HAM-D scores (p=0.03, r=0.648). There was a significant association between the percent changes in TSH values and the reduction in HAM-D scores in the reboxetine group (p=0.03, r=-0.434). In the whole study group, female patients had lower values of basal T4 compared with men (p=0.043), however percent changes of T4 did not differ between genders. In the treatment-responders significant increase in the reboxetine group and significant decrease in the sertraline group regarding the T4 values were found. We observed that various antidepressants had different effects on thyroid hormone levels and this could be attributed to the different mechanisms of actions of these antidepressants.
