Lithium in drinking water and crime rates in Japan: cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

In pharmacological doses, lithium successfully treats bipolar disorder and it can reduce violent crimes committed by individuals with this disorder.

AIMS

To investigate whether naturally occurring lithium in drinking water lowers rates of violent crime in the general population.

METHOD

We examined lithium levels in the drinking water of the 274 municipalities of Kyushu Island in Japan and compared these with the crime rates in each municipality.

RESULTS

We found that lithium levels were significantly and inversely associated with crime rates in 2009.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that even very low levels of lithium in drinking water may play a role in reducing crime rates in the general population.

Affective temperaments are associated with the white matter microstructure in healthy participants

OBJECTIVES

Five affective temperaments are regarded as potential precursors of bipolar disorder. These are depressive, cyclothymic, hyperthymic, irritable, and anxious temperaments. However, the neural substrates underlying these temperaments have not been identified. The aim of this study was to determine whether these temperaments are associated with specific neural substrates related to the brain white matter integrity in healthy participants.

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional neuroimaging study of 71 healthy participants (38 males and 33 females) with affective temperaments. All participants screened for past and present psychiatric disorders. The scores of the five affective temperaments were measured by the temperament scale of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-autoquestionnaire. We analyzed the association between the fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) of the brain white matter and these affective temperaments using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS).

RESULTS

The cyclothymic temperament score had a significant positive association with the FA and a significant negative association with the MD in the white matter in the right frontal part of brain. The hyperthymic temperament score was negatively associated with the MD in a wide area of the brain white matter. The anxious temperament score was positively associated with the FA in the bilateral frontal, temporal, and parietal regions of the brain white matter. The depressive and irritable temperament scores were not associated with either the FA or the MD.

CONCLUSION

The present findings suggest that cyclothymic, hyperthymic, and anxious temperaments are associated with brain white matter integrity in healthy participants.

Maximum Temperature and Solar Radiation as Predictors of Bipolar Patient Admission in an Emergency Psychiatric Ward

Environmental variables can regulate behavior in healthy subjects. Recently, some authors investigated the role of meteorological variables in bipolar patients with an impact on both the onset and course of bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of meteorological variables and other indexes in bipolar hospitalized patients. We examined all patients admitted to the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit of San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital, Orbassano (Turin, Italy) from September 2013 to August 2015, collecting several socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. Seven hundred and thirty patients were included. Compared to the day of admission of control individuals, patients with BD were admitted on a day that presented higher minimum, medium, and maximum temperature, higher maximum humidity, higher solar radiation, and higher hours of sunshine. After logistic regression analysis, admissions to the emergency psychiatric ward due to a primary diagnosis of BD were associated with maximum temperature and solar radiation. The current study provides a novel perspective on the question surrounding seasonal mood patterns in patients with BD. A greater awareness of all possible precipitating factors is needed to inform self-management and psycho-educational programs as well as to improve resilience regarding affective recurrences in the clinical practice.

Psychiatric benefits of lithium in water supplies may be due to protection from the neurotoxicity of lead exposure

INTRODUCTION

Lithium is a medication used to treat bipolar disorder and may also prevent cognitive decline and suicide. Lithium is also found naturally, in levels well below clinical doses, in drinking water worldwide, and levels have been inversely associated with rates of psychiatric disorders. Lead (Pb) is another element in the environment but is a toxin of public health concern. Negative effects of chronic lead exposure and possible benefits of environmental lithium exposure appear complementary.

HYPOTHESIS

Exposure to environmental lithium has associated benefits, which may be due to the mitigation of lead toxicity by lithium.

METHODS

A series of reviews tested each element of the hypothesis. A systematic review clarified the psychiatric and medical correlates of lithium in drinking water. Non-systematic reviews clarified the harms of environmental lead, summarized experimental studies of lithium used to prevent lead toxicity, and explored overlapping biological mechanisms in lithium and lead exposure.

RESULTS

Higher levels of lithium in drinking water were associated with lower suicide rates in 13 of 15 identified studies. While fewer studies were available for other outcomes, lithium was associated with lower rates of homicide, crime, dementia, and mortality. Lead was reported to be ubiquitous in the environment, and chronic low-level exposure has been associated with adverse effects, including effects opposite to the outcomes associated with lithium. Animal studies demonstrated that lithium pre-treatment mitigates lead toxicity. Neurophysiological correlates of lead and lithium exposure overlap.

CONCLUSIONS

Microdose lithium is associated with better psychiatric and medical outcomes, which are complementary to harms of environmental lead exposure. Experimental animal evidence is supportive, and lead and lithium impact overlapping neurophysiologic pathways. Therefore, several lines of circumstantial evidence suggest that lithium protects against the neurotoxic effects of lead. Further studies are required to clarify the benefits and mechanisms of low-dose lithium. There are significant public health implications if this paper's hypothesis is true.
