Abstract
BACKGROUND metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of clinical anomalies that share an inflammatory component of multifactorial etiology. OBJECTIVES the present study aims to relate the genetic variant (rs61330082 C/T) with dietary patterns in the presence of MetS and the application of molecular docking according to the genotype and associated transcription factors. METHODS 197 individuals aged 18 to 65 were included, from whom anthropometric measurements were taken, and a blood sample from the forearm. DNA extraction and enzymatic digestion were performed to determine the genotype of each participant by PCR-RFLP. Dietary patterns were analyzed using a nutritional questionnaire validated for the Mexican population. Serum levels of the protein visfatin were assessed by ELISA. Finally, bioinformatics tools were used for molecular docking to infer the binding of transcriptional factors in the polymorphic region. RESULTS the TT genotype was present in only 10 % of the population. Women carrying the CT+TT genotype, according to the dominant genetic model, had higher serum levels of triglycerides and VDLD-C. Statistical analysis did not show a significant association between the presence of MetS and the dominant CT+TT model (OR = 1.41, 95 % CI = 0.61-3.44, p = 0.53). We identified PAX5 as a transcription factor binding to the polymorphic site of this genetic variant. CONCLUSIONS this study demonstrated a significant association between the genetic variant (rs61330082 C/T) and lipid parameters. Women carrying the T allele have a higher risk of high triglyceride levels, a criterion for metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Limited research has explored the effectiveness of insulin resistance (IR) in forecasting metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk, especially within the Iranian population afflicted with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The present investigation aimed to assess the efficacy of IR indices in predicting the risk of MetS among T2DM patients. Convenient sampling was utilized to select four hundred subjects with T2DM. Metabolic factors and IR indices, including the Waist Circumference-Triglyceride Index (WTI), Triglyceride and Glucose Index (TyG index), the product of TyG index and abdominal obesity indices, and the Metabolic Score for Insulin Resistance (METS-IR), were evaluated. Logistic regression, coupled with modeling, was employed to explore the risk of MetS. The predictive performance of the indices for MetS stratified by sex was evaluated via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and estimation of the area under the curve (AUC) values. The TyG-Waist Circumference (TyG-WC) index exhibited the largest AUCs in both males (0.91) and females (0.93), while the TyG-Body Mass Index (TyG-BMI) demonstrated the smallest AUCs (0.77 in males and 0.74 in females). All indices significantly predicted the risk of MetS in all subjects before and after adjustment (p < 0.001 for all). The TyG-WC index demonstrated the highest odds ratios for MetS (8.06, 95% CI 5.41-12.00). In conclusion, all IR indices assessed in this study effectively predicted the risk of MetS among Iranian patients with T2DM, with the TyG-WC index emerging as the most robust predictor across both genders.

Abstract
Depression and diabetes are co-occurring epidemics. This article explores the association between depression and diabetes in a cohort of Latinx patients with diabetes from low-income households. Data were gathered in Albuquerque, New Mexico (U.S.) between 2016 and 2020 as part of a patient-engaged comparative effectiveness trial comparing two culturally appropriate diabetes self-management programs-the Chronic Care Model (CCM) and the standard of care, Diabetes Self-Management Support Empowerment Model (DSMS). We proposed that the program most culturally and contextually situated in the life of the patient would have the greatest impact on diabetes self-management. Participants were enrolled as dyads-226 Latinx diabetes patient participants (PPs) from low-income households and 226 social support participants (SSPs). Data gathered at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months included a measure of depression and A1c testing. Outcomes between programs were analyzed using longitudinal linear mixed modeling, adjusted for patient demographic characteristics and other potential confounding covariates. Patient A1c had an initial slight decrease at 3 months in both programs. At CCM, patients with a very high A1c (greater than 10%) demonstrated a clinically meaningful decrease in A1c over time. Patients at CCM experienced a large initial decrease in depression and continued to decrease throughout the study, while patients at DSMS showed a slight initial decrease through 6 months, but depression increased again by 12 months, nearly rebounding to baseline levels. A subgroup analysis revealed that a higher baseline A1c was associated with higher depression, and patients with higher A1c achieved greater reductions in depression at CCM than at DSMS. CCM scored higher on Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems cultural competence (CAHPS-CC). Interpretation of results suggests that the more culturally, contextually situated program, CCM, had better outcomes. This study demonstrates that culturally and contextually situating a diabetes intervention can deliver improved benefits for Latinx patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The link between metabolic syndrome and depression has always been controversial. Different studies that have examined the relationship between metabolic syndrome and depression have reported different results. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to examine the association between depression and MetS by meta-analysis. METHODS Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and ISI were searched for publications in English from January 1990 to February 2020. Search included cohort and cross-sectional studies aimed at examining the association between depression and MetS. The risk of bias was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Heterogeneity and publication bias were tested, subgroup analysis and meta-regression were conducted. RESULTS 49 studies with total sample size 399,494 were analyzed. Results indicated the odds of MetS was higher in depressed compared to non-depressed individuals [OR: 1.48; 95 %CI: 1.33-1.64) vs. (OR: 1.38; 95 %CI: 1.17-1.64)]. For cross-sectional studies, depressed patients in Europe (OR = 1.35; 95 %CI: 1.47-1.99) were at higher odds of MetS compared to those in America and Asia. For cohort studies, depressed patients in America (OR = 1.46; 95 %CI: 1.16-1.84) were at higher odds of MetS than those in Europe. Cross-sectional studies indicated women with depression were at higher odds of MetS (OR = 1.95; 95 %CI: 1.38-2.74) compared to men. In both types of studies, the odds of MetS decreased with age. CONCLUSIONS Metabolic syndrome is more common in depressed compared to non-depressed individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies investigating the association between depression and aortic stiffness in older patients with type 2 diabetes are lacking. We postulated an association between depressive symptoms and aortic stiffness, and this relationship may be mediated by increased adiposity. METHODS We analyzed participants with type 2 diabetes aged 55 years or older (n = 958). We measured aortic stiffness using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cut-off ≥ 12 m/s) using the tonometry method. We defined depressive symptoms as a score of greater than 5 on the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15). Adiposity indices we assessed were body mass index, waist circumference, waistto-height ratio, visceral fat area and fat mass. RESULTS Among the participants, 27.2% had aortic stiffness, of whom 6.5% had depressive symptoms. Score on the GDS-15 was correlated with pulse wave velocity, and both variables were correlated with the adiposity markers we analyzed (all p < 0.05). Depressive symptoms were associated with pulse wave velocity (B = 1.79, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.83-2.75) or aortic stiffness (risk ratio 1.60, 95% CI 1.10-2.33) in the unadjusted model. The association persisted after controlling for demographics, duration of diabetes, glycated hemoglobin, comorbidities and medications. Further adjustment for visceral fat area and fat mass in separate models reduced the association between depressive symptoms and pulse wave velocity or aortic stiffness. Mediation models revealed that the mediation proportions of fat mass and visceral fat area on the association between depressive symptoms and pulse wave velocity were 11.8% and 9.7%, respectively. A preliminary analysis of longitudinal data (n = 184) showed similar findings. LIMITATIONS Causality cannot be inferred from the associations we observed. CONCLUSION Depressive symptoms are associated with elevated pulse wave velocity in older people with type 2 diabetes, and this relationship may be partially mediated by increased adiposity.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the association between depressive symptomatology and health markers in type 1 diabetes. METHODS Four countries from the InterDiane Consortium had adopted the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy Study protocol, including the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Associations between depression symptomatology, diabetes complications (diabetic nephropathy, proliferative retinopathy, major adverse cardiovascular events [MACE]) and vascular risk factors (metabolic syndrome, body mass index, glycaemic control) were investigated. RESULTS In a sample of 1046 participants (Croatia n = 99; Finland n = 314; Latvia n = 315; Lithuania n = 318), 13.4% displayed symptoms of depression (BDI score ≥ 16) with no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of depression among the cohorts. The highest rates of diabetic nephropathy (37.1%) and proliferative retinopathy (36.3%) were observed in Lithuania. The rates of MACE and metabolic syndrome were highest in Finland. In joint analyses, individuals exhibiting depression symptomatology had higher HbA1c (79 vs. 72 mmol/mol, p < 0.001) and higher triglyceride concentration (1.67 vs. 1.28 mmol/l, p < 0.001), than those without. In the multivariable model, BDI score was positively associated with the presence of diabetic nephropathy, proliferative retinopathy, MACE, and metabolic syndrome and its triglyceride component. Moreover, BDI score was positively associated with the number of metabolic syndrome components, triglyceride concentration, and HbA1c. CONCLUSIONS Comorbid depression should be considered a relevant factor explaining metabolic problems and vascular outcomes. Causality cannot be inferred from this cross-sectional study.

Fundamento O Diabetes Mellitus Tipo 2 (DMT2) é comum nos idosos, que também apresentam um nível elevado de fatores de risco para doenças cardiovasculares (DCVs), tais como dislipidemia. Entretanto, o papel da depressão nos pacientes com DMT2 e sua relação com fatores de risco para DCV são pouco estudados. Objetivo O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a relação entre sintomas depressivos (SDs) e fatores de risco cardiovascular conhecidos em idosos comunitários portadores de DMT2. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo transversal, no qual foram incluídos 85 idosos comunitários com DMT2. Os SDs foram avaliados através da Escala de Depressão Geriátrica de Yesavage, em versão reduzida (GDS-15). Os seguintes fatores de risco cardiovascular foram avaliados: pressão arterial sistólica (PAS) e diastólica (PAD), glicose plasmática em jejum (GPJ), perfil lipídico (triglicerídeos séricos (TG), colesterol total sérico (CT), colesterol sérico de lipoproteína de baixa densidade (LDL-C) e colesterol sérico de lipoproteína de baixa densidade (HDL-C)) e índice de massa corporal (IMC). A análise de regressão múltipla de Poisson foi utilizada para avaliar a associação entre os SDs e cada fator de risco cardiovascular ajustado por sexo, idade, tempo em atividades físicas moderadas e status funcional. O nível de significância adotado para a análise foi de 5%. Resultados Dentre todos os fatores de risco analisados, apenas o aumento de LDL-C apresentou uma correlação com níveis elevados de SD (RP=1,005; IC95% 1,002-1,008). Foi observada uma associação significativa entre os níveis de HDL-C (RP=0,99; IC95% 0,98-0,99) e a PAS (RP=1,009; IC95% 1,004-1,014). Conclusão Nos idosos com DMT2, a presença de SD foi associada a níveis de LDL-C, HDL-C e PAS, mesmo após o ajuste por sexo, idade, nível de atividade física e capacidade funcional. Abstract
Introduction Various clinical studies have reported that clinical depression is a common co-morbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Depression can badly affect the lifestyle of diabetic patients and impair the proper management of diabetes mellitus. Therefore, there exists a need to identify risk factors of depression in diabetic patients especially in relation to various clinical parameters, glycemic control and diabetic microvascular complications. Materials and methods It was a cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan from August 2018 to April 2019. We recruited type 2 diabetic patients and measured their various clinical and hematological parameters. We evaluated depression using Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and evaluated its relationship with glycemic control, duration of diabetes, fasting lipid profile and presence of various diabetic microvascular complications. Results There were 100 subjects in the study having a mean age 58.3 ± 12.4 (range: 36 - 71) years with a male to female ratio of 1:1.2. The mean duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus was 11.2 ± 9.2 years. The mean PHQ-9 score of the study population was 10.2 ± 8.1. The frequency of depression was found to be 40.0%. Depression was most frequently found in women and in patients between 40 to 60 years of age (60.0%). Depression was more common in patients with dyslipidemia (p-value = 0.0015). Patients with diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy were 3.8 times, 4.2 times and 2.1 times more likely to have clinical depression than the patients without these complications. Patients with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) worse than 7.5% had a significantly higher rate of depression than those whose HbA1c ranged from 6.5 - 7.5 % (p-value = 0.0028). Duration of diabetes mellitus did not significantly affect the frequency of depression in diabetic patients. Conclusion Depression is common in a large number of diabetic patients. Female gender, dyslipidemia, diabetic microvascular complications and impaired glycemic control are significantly associated with depression in diabetic patients.

Abstract
AIMS Depression is a common co-morbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Untreated depression in these patients adversely affects self-care activities and other diabetes complications. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of depression among patients with T2DM by conducting a meta-analysis of observational studies. METHODS MEDLINE, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases were searched for all observational studies that assessed depression in T2DM. Relevant articles were searched using the combination of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms of "depression", "depressive disorder", and "diabetes mellitus" published between January 2007 and July 2018. Random effects model was used to estimate the weighted prevalence rates and 95% CI using "metaprop program in STATA 11". RESULTS In total, the 248 included studies (with 273 reported prevalence) identified 83,020,812 participants; of them, 23,245,827 (28%; 95% CI 27, 29) suffered from different severity levels of depressive disorders. The prevalence of depression was separately reported in 137,372 males and 134,332 females. Of them, 31,396 males (23%, 95% CI: 20, 26) and 45,673 females (34%, 95% CI: 31, 38) were depressed. Compared with global estimate, depression prevalence was lower in Europe (24%) and Africa (27%), but higher in Australia (29%) and Asia (32%). The prevalence in America was equal to the estimated prevalence in the world (28%). Depression was more common in subjects younger than 65 compared with elderlies (31% vs. 21%). CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrated that almost one in four adults with T2DM experienced depression. Given the high prevalence of depressive disorders in diabetic patients, screening these patients for co-morbid depression and its relevant risk factors is highly recommended.
