Abstract
BACKGROUND The effectiveness of a high level of physical activity in maintaining physical function in patients with hip osteoarthritis has not been adequately examined. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether self-reported physical activity is associated with physical function and walking ability in female patients with hip osteoarthritis. METHODS This was a multicenter cross-sectional study. The dependent variables were the lower-limb range of motion and muscle strength, and walking ability. Self-reported physical activity was assessed according to the guidelines of the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. Multiple regression models were used to determine whether physical activity was significantly related to the dependent variables after adjusting for confounding factors (age, body mass index, hip pain, comorbidity, and severity of hip osteoarthritis). RESULTS A total of 167 participants were included in the study. Physical activity was associated with muscle strength in hip flexion (affected/unaffected, β = 0.18/β = 0.16), abduction (β = 0.19/β = 0.26), knee extension (β = 0.22/β = 0.26), Timed Up-and-Go test (β = -0.16), and 5-m walking time test (β = -0.15). CONCLUSION In female patients with hip osteoarthritis, greater physical activity was associated with greater lower extremity muscle strength and walking ability.

Abstract
Aging and increased vulnerability define the clinical condition of frailty. However, while the cervical function is recognized as a determinant of balance and walking performance, no study simultaneously physical ability, cervical function, balance, and plantar pressure distribution in walking in nursing house population. Thus, the present study aimed to compare these parameters between Frail and Pre-Frail aged people. Thirty-one (12 men and 19 women) institutionalized participants (age: 89.45 ± 5.27 years, weight: 61.54 ± 9.99 kg, height: 160.34 ± 7.93 cm) were recruited and divided into Pre-Frail and Frail groups according to SPPB (Short Physical Performance Battery) score (Frail <6, Pre-Frail ≥6). Participants performed the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) and a static balance evaluation. The cervical range of motion (COM), knee extensor strength, and walking plantar pressure distribution have been measured. The Pre-Frail group showed a higher gait speed (ES = 0.78, p ≤ 0.001) and a better TUGT, as well as higher knee extensor strength (ES = 0.4, p = 0.04). Furthermore, the Pre-Frail group presented a center of pressure (COP) displacement velocity on the sagittal axis (ES = 0.43, p = 0.02) and a more COP projection on this axis (ES = 0.43, p = 0.02). No significant difference has been observed between the two groups concerning the total contact time and most of the plantar pressure parameters except for the rear foot relative contact time which was lower in the Pre-Frail group. The Pre-Frail group also showed better cervical tilt mobility (ES = 0.35, p = 0.04). This study highlights the influence of some new parameters on frailty in older people, such as cervical mobility and plantar pressure distribution in walking.

Abstract
Background Falling is a major trauma that can occur with aging, leading to very significant psychological and physical health effects with financial and societal consequences. It is therefore essential to explore therapeutic treatments that can reduce this risk. Some recognized effective treatments exist, concerning in particular the re-education of the muscles of the lower limbs. However, to our knowledge, none of them focus on the cervical spine although the latter is located at an essential physiological crossroads. Manual therapy, which has already demonstrated its impact on pain and balance parameters in the elderly, could be a painless and non-invasive tool of choice in addressing this problem. Methods Interventional study (not related to a health product), monocentric, prospective, controlled, randomized double-blind (patient and evaluator performing the measurements). The experiment will take place over three measurement periods on D0, D7 and D21. On D0 subjects will be randomized in 2 groups: experimental and placebo group. Both groups will be assessed on: Short Physical Performance Battery test score, walking speed, lower limb strength, balance, heart rate variability and cervical spine strength and mobility. Then the experimental group will receive a myofascial release protocol applied to the cervical spine and the placebo group will receive a placebo light touch protocol. The intervention will be followed by the same measurements as before. This schedule will be reproduced on D7. On D21, only one assessment will be done. Discussion This study started in 2020 but could not go beyond the inclusion phase due to the COVID pandemic. It is envisaged that recruitment could resume during 2022. Abstract
AIM In the past 5-10 years, there has been a growing number of studies implementing ballistic (i.e. fast) resistance training to improve walking. The aim of this study was to determine whether people with neurological conditions could perform ballistic exercises safely and accurately in their home environment. DESIGN An observational study of 24 adults with a neurological condition (i.e. stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and neurosurgical) that limited mobility was carried out. Participants were supervised during seven ballistic exercises over six home-based sessions across three weeks. Safety was determined as the ability to perform the exercise independently. Accuracy was determined as the ability to perform the exercise on pre-determined criteria. RESULTS The majority of participants had sustained a traumatic brain injury (n = 13) or stroke (n = 9) with a mean age of 38.3 (SD 15.3, range 17-68) years. The mean walking speed was 1.11 (SD 0.29, range 0.53-1.56) m/s. In terms of safety, participants performed the exercises safely 88% of the time, and accurately 49% of the time. Safe completion of each individual exercise ranged initially from 46% to 100% for participants, but accuracy was lower ranging from 17% to 58%. Threshold self-selected walking speeds for optimal sensitivity and specificity for safety ranged from 0.86 to 1.17 m/s and for accuracy ranged from 0.97 to 1.23 m/s. CONCLUSION Most of the home-based ballistic resistance exercises were safe, but accuracy was low for several of the ballistic resistance exercises. Higher self-selected walking speeds were associated with more accurate performance.

Abstract
The meal distribution of proteins throughout the day is usually skewed. However, its physiological implications and the effects of better protein distribution on muscle volume are largely unknown. Here, using the two-meals-per-day feeding model, we find that protein intake at the early active phase promotes overloading-induced muscle hypertrophy, in a manner dependent on the local muscle clock. Mice fed branched-chain amino acid (BCAA)-supplemented diets at the early active phase demonstrate skeletal muscle hypertrophy. However, distribution-dependent effects are not observed in ClockΔ19 or muscle-specific Bmal1 knockout mice. Additionally, we examined the relationship between the distribution of proteins in meals and muscle functions, such as skeletal muscle index and grip strength in humans. Higher muscle functions were observed in subjects who ingested dietary proteins mainly at breakfast than at dinner. These data suggest that protein intake at breakfast may be better for the maintenance of skeletal muscle mass.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship between leg skeletal muscle mass asymmetry and usual gait speed in older adults. METHODS The subjects were 139 community-dwelling older adults. The asymmetry index was calculated using the leg skeletal muscle mass index (LSMI) values of both legs. The subjects were divided into "large" and "small" asymmetry groups based on the asymmetry index. The relationship between asymmetry and gait speed was analyzed using a linear regression model. The appendicular skeletal muscle mass index and LSMI were included as adjustment variables in the analysis. RESULTS The asymmetry index and having a "large" asymmetry were independently related to gait speed, even after adjusting for covariates such as appendicular skeletal muscle mass index and LSMI. DISCUSSION Leg skeletal muscle mass asymmetry was related to gait speed independently of the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index and LSMI values. A skeletal muscle mass evaluation among older adults should include an assessment of the total skeletal muscle mass and its asymmetry.

Abstract
The objectives were to analyze the effect of a gerontogymnastics program on functional ability and fitness on overweight and obese older woman and to understand if sarcopenia mediates its effect. This randomized controlled trial involved 216 overweight and obese women. The experimental group (EG) carried out 12 weeks of a gerontogymnastics program. The assessment was of gait speed, cardiorespiratory fitness, functional capacity, and muscle strength. EG showed significant improvements in almost every test. When the effect of training was adjusted by gait speed, the improvement of the 6 min walk test (MWT) for the trained group was no longer significant (p = 0.127). The improvement of the 6 MWT was significantly and positively associated with the 10 m test (β = −10.087). After including the 10-m test in the equations, the association between the 6MWT and carrying out the training program decreased but remained significant (β = −19.904). The mediation analysis showed a significant, direct and indirect effect with a significant Sobel test value (z = 6.606 ± 7.733; p = 0.000). These results indicate that a gerontogymnastics program improves functional capacity and fitness; and the effect of a gerontogymnastics program on CRF is mediated by sarcopenia in older women who are overweight and obese.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was performed to test the hypothesis that low quadriceps isometric strength (QIS) is associated with greater risk of mortality and has the additive prognostic significance to the severity of heart failure (HF) and gait speed in older patients with HF. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was performed in 1273 patients ≥ 60 years of age with HF (mean age 75 ± 8 years, 59.1% men); all of whom were evaluated during hospitalization for usual gait speed and maximal QIS. The QIS was expressed relative to body mass (% BM). The endpoint was all-cause mortality. RESULTS Over a median follow-up period of 1.59 years (interquartile range, 0.58 to 3.42 years), 224 patients died. The cutoff value based on the Youden index for the QIS discriminating those at high risk of mortality was 36.2% BM for overall, and we defined less than this cutoff point of QIS as low QIS. After adjustment for the HF risk score, the hazard ratio in low QIS was 1.55 for overall (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17-2.06). The addition of low QIS to the HF risk score and gait speed was associated with significant increases in both net reclassification improvement (NRI, 0.239 for overall; 95% CI, 0.096-0.381) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI, 0.004 for overall; 95% CI, 0.001-0.009) for all-cause mortality. CONCLUSION Low QIS was strongly associated with poor prognosis and showed complementary prognostic predictive capability to the HF risk score and gait speed in older patients with HF.

Abstract
Objective To measure and compare the functionality of patients after discharge from the intensive care unit and at the time of hospital discharge. Methods Quantitative study of a prospective cohort performed between August of 2016 and December of 2017 at a university hospital. A 10-meter walk test was performed at 2 timepoints: after discharge from the intensive care unit and prior to hospital discharge. The data were analyzed using Student's t-test and Pearson or Spearman correlation. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21.0 was used for the analysis, and p ≤ 0.05 was adopted as the level of significance. Results Forty patients, with a mean age of 57.1 ± 12.2 years and with a predominance of males (60%), were evaluated. For the post-intensive care unit test, a mean speed of 0.48m/s was observed, and for the pre-hospital discharge test, there was an increase to 0.71m/s, evidencing functional evolution during the hospital stay (p < 0.001). Conclusion There was significant improvement in walking speed at the time of hospital discharge when compared to the walking speed at the time of intensive care unit discharge.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To Establish the potential of Citrulline supplementation (CIT) combined or not with exercise on muscle function and physical performance via a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in human aged 50 years and older. RECENT FINDINGS Based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guideline, 103 references have been identified. Among this number, only six RCTs (250 participants) matched the inclusion criteria and were included in the present systematic review. Among the included studies, five of six reported beneficial effects of CIT on muscle mass. Then, four of six studies reported CIT effects on muscle strength but also that CIT when combined to exercise results in further improvements in upper muscle strength. Finally, three of six studies reported beneficial CIT effect on physical performance and suggested that CIT with exercise displayed greater improvements in walking speed than exercise alone. SUMMARY CIT supplementation seems to be able to improve muscular and physical factors in frail elderly people (malnourished, hypertensive, obese, dynapenic-obese) compared to placebo. More importantly, CIT combined to exercise is more efficient than exercise or CIT alone. However, because of the small number (six) and heterogeneity (dose, duration, population) of the studies realized in older adults, further studies are needed to confirm its promising potential.

Abstract
According to the revised European consensus on sarcopenia, muscle strength is the primary parameter of sarcopenia and is associated with adverse outcomes or physical limitation. This literature review aims to clarify how and why to measure and preserve muscle strength in older population. Overall, the relationship between muscle strength and physical function is impacted by level of muscle mass, the degree of obesity (BMI), age and physical activity. Therefore, these factors are to be considered in the evaluation of muscle strength. It is necessary to have objective, reliable and sensitive tools to assess muscle strength, in different populations to detect and quantify weakness, to adapt physical exercises to patients' capacity and to evaluate the effects of treatment. Handgrip strength measurement might be reasonable for clinical practice while the measurement of knee flexors/extensors strength with both 1RM and dynamometers is increasingly important yet restricted by the requirement of special equipment. Physical activity and nutrition are two important behavioral factors to maintain muscle strength. Combined exercise and nutrition interventions improved muscle strength to a more prominent degree than exercise or nutrition alone.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mobility disability affects nearly 15% of people aged 65 or over worldwide. Excess weight or obesity (OB), along with an accentuated loss of muscle strength (dynapenia), is recognized to be one of the most common risk factors for mobility impairment among the elderly. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of a 12-week mixed power training (MPT high-velocity resistance training mixed with functional exercises) on physical function in obese older men exhibiting different severities of dynapenia. METHODS Community-dwelling older men (69 ± 6 years) were assigned to the study if they were considered obese (OB, fat mass ≥ 25% body weight, BW) and to one of the two groups according to severity of dynapenia [(handgrip strength-HS)/BW]: type 1(OB-DY1) or type 2(OB-DY2), < 1 or 2SD from a young reference group. Participants followed a 12-week MPT, three times/week, 75 min/session. Main outcomes included the performance on the 4-m and 6-min walking tests, Timed Up and Go, stair and balance tests. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION At baseline, OB-DY1 performed better than OB-DY2 in all functional tests (p < 0.05). Following the intervention, medium-to-large training effect size (ES) were observed for fat (ES = 0.21) and lean (ES = 0.32, p < 0.001) masses, functional performance (ES 0.11-0.54, p < 0.05), HS (ES = 0.10, p < 0.05) and lower limb muscle strength (ES = 0.67, p < 0.001) and power (ES = 0.60, p < 0.05). Training-by-group interaction showed that OB-DY1 lost more FM (ES = 0.11, p = 0.03) and OB-DY2 improved more HS (ES = 0.19, p = 0.006) than their counterparts. CONCLUSIONS Seniors with obesity and severe dynapenia have poorer physical function than those in the early stage of dynapenia. Both seem to benefit from a high-velocity resistance training mixed with functional exercises, although by slightly different pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Squat is the most important exercise for the strengthening of the lower limb muscles. The muscle contraction speed and type affect the muscle activation, strength, and power. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the influence of two different speeds of squat exercise on the activation and balance of the lower limb muscles. METHODS Thirty-eight healthy adults randomly performed squat exercises at different speeds and in different ground environments, 3 times per week for 4 weeks. The participants' lower limb muscle activation and balance ability were evaluated before and after the training. RESULTS There was a significant difference in muscle activation between the squats in terms of speed (fast, moderate, and slow squat) (p< 0.05). After the training periods, there was a significant difference in the rectus femoris (RF) and biceps femoris (BF) of the groups that performed the fast squat (p< 0.05). There was significant difference between the pre- and post-static balance test in the group that performed fast squats on an unstable surface (p< 0.05). After the training periods, the stability index with eyes open values, which is static balance, showed a significant difference among the groups after 4 weeks (p< 0.05). The groups that performed fast squat showed a significant difference between the pre- and post-dynamic Y balance test (p< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS For optimal performance and effect of selected squat exercises, the speed and ground environment should be taken into consideration.

Abstract
[Purpose] This study aimed to evaluate the effect of body weight support with an
assistive device on predicted locomotive physical activity measured using triaxial
accelerometers in healthy young subjects. [Subjects and Methods] Sixteen healthy subjects
aged 21.9 ± 1.1 years walked on a treadmill at speeds of 45 and 55 meters/min under 0%,
10%, 20%, and 30% body weight support conditions. Predicted metabolic equivalents and
number of steps were evaluated using triaxial accelerometers. Measured metabolic
equivalents and number of steps were evaluated using a metabolic system and observers,
respectively. Raw data of synthetic accelerations were also obtained. [Results] Predicted
metabolic equivalents and number of steps and raw data of synthetic accelerations
decreased with increasing amounts of body weight support. [Conclusion] These findings
suggest that accelerometers may underestimate locomotive physical activity with increasing
amounts of body weight support using assistive devices. Thus, it is important to consider
the amount of body weight support when assessing physical activities in subjects using
assistive devices for mobility.

Abstract
Background: Absolute grip strength (aGS) is used to detect dynapenia, and is also an indicator of functional impairments such as mobility limitations. The objective of this study is to investigate whether dynapenia status assessed by absolute grip strength (aGS) is associated with loss of community mobility.Method: The population studied (n=62) was composed of a dynapenic group of women (aged 66.4 ± 4.8) according to an aGS threshold of ≤ 19.9kg and an age-matched group of nodynapenic women (aged 66.1 ± 5.2). The aGS was measured and body-weigth-related to grip strength (BW/GS) was computed. Fonctionnal laboratory tests were conducted. During 12 days, each participant wore a GPS device to obtain Transit distance in vehicle per day, Transit distance on foot per day and Ellipse area. The Life space (LS) was assessed using the Life Space Assesment questionnaire (LSA). A Wilcoxon test was used to compare the 2 groups for the community mobility measures. Then, data of the 2 groups were pooled to assess the relationship between BW/GS and community mobility measures. A Spearman correlation was used.Results: The dynapenic group performed worse for fonctionnal capacity tests such as the step test and the walking speed. Howerver, no significant difference was found for GPS measures and LS between the two groups. No significant relationship was found for the BW/GS and community mobility measures with the GPS measures and the LS.

Abstract
Background/objectives to investigate the effects of a 3-year multidomain lifestyle intervention, omega-3 supplementation or both on physical activity (PA) in older adults with subjective memory complaints. Design/settings/subjects the Multidomain Alzheimer Preventive Trial was a 3-year randomised controlled trial that enroled 1,680 community-dwelling adults aged 70 years or over, with subjective memory complaints. Participants were randomised to omega-3 supplementation (total daily dose of 800 mg docosahexanoic acid and up to 225 mg eicosapentanoic acid), multidomain intervention (nutritional and exercise counselling and cognitive training), omega-3 plus multidomain intervention or placebo with usual care. Methods PA was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. From this, global moderate-to-vigorous PA, leisure-time PA, non-leisure-time PA and light PA were measured in metabolic equivalent tasks-minutes per week (MET-min/week). Results in the multidomain groups, participants significantly increased their moderate-to-vigorous and leisure-time PA at 6 months (≥300 MET-min/week for both in the multidomain groups; P ≤ 0.002) before returning to baseline by the end of the trial. Activity in the placebo/usual care and omega-3/usual care groups declined overtime. Between-group differences remained significant for both multidomain groups for leisure-time physical activity at 2- and 3-year follow-ups. Compared to placebo/usual care, interventions had no significant effects on non-leisure-time PA and light PA. Omega-3 supplementation alone had no effects on PA. Conclusions a multidomain intervention focused on cognitive training, and nutritional and PA counselling increased PA in the short-term and limited its decline in the long-term among older adults with memory complaints. Abstract
Background There are many reports that dynapenia, sarcopenia and frailty each have associations with bodily function or with Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). However, studies that compare all three conditions and their effects on IADL are lacking. The purpose of this study is to examine associations of sarcopenia, frailty, and dynapenia with IADL. Methods Participants included 123 community-dwelling older adults (31 men, 92 women,) aged 65 years or older (75.0 ± 5.3 years) who were independent in IADL. In terms of physical function, measurements were performed for muscle mass, grip strength, walking speed, isometric knee extension strength, and unipedal standing. A questionnaire survey was carried out, the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence (TMIG-IC) was administered, and participants were asked about sense of fatigue and amount of activity. Results Dynapenia was associated with classifications of both frailty and sarcopenia. In addition, sarcopenia had a sensitivity and specificity for dynapenia of 33 and 89%, respectively. Frailty had a sensitivity and specificity for dynapenia of 17 and 98%, respectively. Dynapenia was a significant independent related factor for the TMIG-IC (β = −0.21, P < 0.05). Conclusions Dynapenia, more than sarcopenia or frailty, was related to difficulties with IADL; therefore, assessment of dynapenia should be given greater emphasis in evaluating the physical functioning of older adults.
