Abstract
BACKGROUND The concept of intrinsic capacity (IC) was introduced to define healthy aging and active aging based on functional capacity, yet there is limited understanding of the risk of IC decline at a population level. AIMS To consolidate existing evidence for rates of IC decline and risk factors among community-dwelling adults 60 years or older. METHODS According to the PRISMA guidelines, the literature search was independently conducted by two researchers in 8 databases from inception to January 2024 without language restrictions using combinations of free words and subject words. Qualities of included studies were assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI's) critical appraisal checklist for prevalence studies. To pool the data, a random-effect meta-analysis was performed, followed by subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis. All analyses were performed by Stata14.0. RESULTS From 1594 records, 15 studies were extracted with 33,070 participants for meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of IC decline in community settings was 67.8% (95% CI: 57.0-78.5%; P < 0.001). The prevalence of IC decline in China (66.0%; 95% CI: 53.2-78.9%) was found to be slightly lower than in other countries/regions (73.0%; 95% CI: 59.8-86.3%); however, this difference was not statistically significant. Other subgroup analyses revealed no statistically significant differences in prevalence. Age, hypertension, diabetes, gender, education level, living status, smoking, regular exercise, marital status, and osteoarthritis are associated with IC decline. CONCLUSION More than two-thirds of older adults in the community are affected by IC decline, and age, hypertension, diabetes, female sex, low education level, living alone, smoking, irregular exercise, unmarried, and osteoarthritis are all risk factors for IC decline.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This population-based study aimed to evaluate the association of mental health and several sleep conditions with Social Frailty (SF) in a sample of Iranian middle-aged and older adults. METHOD This cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Ardakan Cohort Study on Aging (ACSA). SF was assessed by five questions: inability to help others, limited social participation, loneliness, financial difficulty, and not having anyone to talk to (HALFT). Based on the responses, the participants were divided into three groups: social robust (a score of 0), pre-SF (a score of 1-2), and SF (a score of ≥3). Mental health factors included depression and anxiety. Within the domain of sleep conditions, considerations included sleep duration, quality, subjective sleep health, and daytime sleepiness. The logistic regression models were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS A total of 5782 subjects participated in the study, with females comprising 50.7% of the sample. This study revealed the total prevalence of pre-SF and SF were 76.4 and 9.3%, respectively. After adjusting for age, sex, marital status, education, number of comorbidities, and mental health, in the age group of 50-60 years, anxiety (borderline and abnormal compared to normal, OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.05-2.11 and OR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.26-3.12, respectively) were associated with SF. Similarly, in the age group of 60 years and above, only depression was associated with SF (OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.45-3.44). CONCLUSION These findings imply that mental health might contribute to SF in the middle-aged and older Iranian population.

Abstract
This paper explores the ageing population in Italy, where older adults account for more than 14 million individuals (in January 2023) and constitute 24.1 % of the total population. Frailty, a condition encompassing biological, psychological, social, and economic challenges, is recognised as a significant public health issue. The study introduces the Short Functional Geriatric Evaluation (SFGE) as a large-scale screening tool for frailty in community-dwelling older individuals. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted on the SFGE. The CFA scrutinises the construct validity of SFGE using a sample population from the "Long Live the Elderly!" program in Italy. Initial results indicate an acceptable fit, prompting the incorporation of Modification Indices to enhance model performance. The refined CFA demonstrates that the SFGE model effectively captures the multidimensional nature of frailty. The text underscores the timeliness of identifying frailty, emphasising the need for simple, fast, and predictive tools to screen large populations efficiently.

Abstract
Background Social Frailty is a significant public health concern affecting the elderly, particularly with the global population aging rapidly. Older adults with social frailty are at significantly higher risk of adverse outcomes such as disability, cognitive impairment, depression, and even death. In recent years, there have been more and more studies on social frailty, but no bibliometrics has been used to analyze and understand the general situation in this field. Therefore, by using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bilioshiny software programs, this study aims to analyze the general situation of the research on social frailties of the older adults and determine the research trends and hot spots. Methods A bibliometric analysis was conducted by searching relevant literature on the social frailty of the older adults from 2003 to 2022 in the Web of Science core database, using visualization software to map publication volume, country and author cooperation networks, keyword co-occurrences, and word emergence. Results We analyzed 415 articles from 2003 to 2022. Brazil has the highest number of articles in the field of social frailty of the older adults, and the United States has the highest number of cooperative publications. Andrew MK, from Canada, is the most published and co-cited author, with primary research interests in geriatric assessment, epidemiology, and public health. "Social Vulnerability," "Health," "Frailty," "Mortality," and "Older Adult" are among the research hotspots in this field. "Dementia," "Alzheimer's disease," "Population," and "Covid-19" are emerging research trends in social frailty among the older adults. Conclusion This scientometric study maps the research hotspots and trends for the past 20 years in social frailty among the older adults. Our findings will enable researchers to better understand trends in this field and find suitable directions and partners for future research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aims of this systematic review were to explore the pooled prevalence of multidimensional frailty assessed by the Tilburg Frailty Indicator among community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL and three Chinese databases. Two independent researchers selected the literatures, extracted the data and evaluated the quality. All statistical analyses were performed using STATA version 16.0. RESULTS There were 66 studies with a total of 40,597 individuals that were eligible for the meta-analysis. Data from the meta-analysis revealed the pooled prevalence of 42 % for multidimensional frailty (95 % CI: 38 %-45 %, I2 = 98.9 %, T2 = 0.024, p < 0.001). Among the six studies that provided data for different age groups, the results demonstrated an increasing trend in the prevalence of multidimensional frailty with advancing age. The results of gender-stratified analysis proved that the pooled prevalence of multidimensional frailty in women (45 %, 95 % CI: 39 %-51 %, p < 0.001) was higher than that in men (33 %, 95 % CI: 28 %-39 %, p < 0.001). Based on different education levels, the prevalence of multidimensional frailty is highest in the primary elementary or illiterate group (41 %, 95 % CI: 30 %-52 %, p < 0.001). According to different marital status types, the pooled prevalence of multidimensional frailty in the married group was significantly lower (36 %, 95 % CI: 28 %-43 %) than that in the unmarried, divorced or widowed group (51 %, 95 % CI: 37 %-65 %). CONCLUSIONS Through a comprehensive review, we identified that 42 % of elderly individuals living in communities exhibit multidimensional frailty, indicating that multidimensional frailty is relatively common in this population. Stratified analysis revealed that advanced age, female gender, lower education level and unmarried status were associated with higher rates of multidimensional frailty.

Abstract
Introduction Agriculture is deeply woven into the fabric of rural life, influencing the economy, and the social and health dynamics of rural communities. While it offers physical and mental health benefits through regular physical activity and interaction with nature, the solitary nature of farming activities may also lead to social isolation. This study explores the complex relationship between the frequency of agricultural engagement and feelings of loneliness among rural inhabitants with chronic diseases, addressing a gap in the literature concerning the impact of agricultural practices on social well-being. Method A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among patients over 40 who frequented the general medicine department in Unnan City, a rural area of Japan. The study utilized the Japanese version of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale to assess loneliness and collected data on agricultural activity frequency through questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression analyses examined the association between agricultural activities and loneliness, controlling for demographic and health-related variables. Results Among 647 participants, higher frequencies of agricultural activities were significantly associated with increased loneliness, especially for individuals engaging in agriculture four to five times weekly or daily. Engaging in agricultural activities four to five times weekly and daily significantly increased the likelihood of higher loneliness levels, with odds ratios (OR) of 1.80 (p = 0.039) and 2.47 (p < 0.01), respectively, when compared to engagement less than once a week. Age emerged as an influential factor, with individuals aged 75 and older showing increased odds of experiencing higher loneliness (OR 1.56, p = 0.025). Conclusion The study underscores the dual nature of agricultural engagement in rural communities, highlighting its role in both supporting physical health and contributing to social isolation. These findings advocate for developing targeted interventions that mitigate loneliness among rural populations, suggesting the need for a balanced approach that encompasses social and healthcare strategies to enhance the overall well-being of individuals engaged in agriculture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence of loneliness and social isolation among informal carers of individuals with dementia and to identify potential influencing factors. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive search across 10 electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, Chinese Biomedical, China National Knowledge Internet, and WANFANG. Our search strategy covered the inception of the databases up to September 16, 2023, with an updated search conducted on March 8, 2024. Prevalence estimates of loneliness and social isolation, presented with 95% confidence intervals, were synthesized through meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were employed to explore potential moderating variables and heterogeneity. RESULTS The study encompassed 27 research papers involving 11,134 informal carers from 17 different countries. The pooled prevalence of loneliness among informal carers of individuals with dementia was 50.8% (95% CI: 41.8%-59.8%), while the pooled prevalence of social isolation was 37.1% (95% CI: 26.7%-47.6%). Subgroup analyses and meta-regression indicated that various factors significantly influenced the prevalence of loneliness and social isolation. These factors included the caregiving setting, study design, the intensity of loneliness, geographical location (continent), data collection time, and the choice of assessment tools. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores the substantial prevalence of loneliness and social isolation among informal carers of individuals with dementia. It suggests that policymakers and healthcare providers should prioritize the development of targeted interventions and support systems to alleviate loneliness and social isolation within this vulnerable population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social frailty is a holistic concept encompassing various social determinants of health. Considering its importance and impact on health-related outcomes in older adults, the present study was conducted to cross-culturally adapt and psychometrically evaluate the Social Frailty Scale in Iranian older adults in 2023. METHODS This was a methodological study. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Social Frailty Scale 8-item (SFS-8) was conducted according to Wild's guideline. Content and face validity were assessed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Then, 250 older adults covered by comprehensive health centers were selected using multistage random sampling. Participants completed the demographic questionnaire, the Abbreviated Mental Test score, the SFS-8, and the Lubben Social Network Scale. Construct validity was assessed by principal component analysis (PCA) and known-group comparisons. The Mann‒Whitney U test was used to compare social frailty scores between the isolated and non-isolated older adults. Internal consistency, equivalence, and stability were assessed using the Kuder-Richardson method, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), the standard error of measurement (SEM), and the minimum detectable change (MDC). The ceiling and floor effects were also assessed. The data were analyzed using JASP 0.17.3. RESULTS The ratio and index of content validity and the modified kappa coefficient of all the items were 1.00. The impact score of the items was greater than 4.6. PCA identified the scale as a single component by removing two questions that could explain 52.9% of the total variance in the scale score. The Persian version of the Social Frailty Scale could distinguish between isolated and non-isolated older adults (p < 0.001). The Kuder-Richardson coefficient, ICC, SEM, and MDC were 0.606, 0.904, 0.129, and 0.358, respectively. The relative frequencies of the minimum and maximum scores obtained from the scale were 34.8 and 1.2, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The Persian version of the Social Frailty Scale (P-SFS) can be used as a valid and reliable scale to assess social frailty in Iranian older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the impact of negative and positive life events on the development of social frailty. DESIGN Population-based longitudinal study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS This study was set in the Japanese community cohort and included 2174 adults aged ≥65 years without social frailty at baseline. METHODS We assessed the experiences of 6 negative and positive life events (increase in economic difficulties, illness or injury of spouse, death of family or friends, marriage of children or grandchildren, birth of grandchildren or great-grandchildren, and making new friends) in the 15 months after baseline. We followed the social frailty status of the participants and identified the development of social frailty 48 months after the baseline. Social frailty was operationally defined as having 2 or more of Makizako's 5 items (going out less frequently, rarely visiting friends, not feeling helpful to friends or family, living alone, and not talking to someone daily). RESULTS Among 2174 participants without social frailty at baseline, 161 (7.4%) developed social frailty after 48 months. Multivariate logistic regression models on each life event and development of social frailty showed that illness or injury of spouse was significantly associated with a higher risk of subsequent social frailty [adjusted odds ratio (OR), 1.74; 95% CI, 1.10-2.74] and making new friends was significantly associated with lower risk of subsequent social frailty (adjusted OR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.27-0.54). No significant ORs of social frailty were found for other life events. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Life events in later life have both positive and negative impacts on the development of social frailty, depending on the nature of the event. To prevent social frailty, it may be important to monitor negative life events and promote positive life events in later life.

Abstract
Observational studies have indicated that high blood pressure (BP) may be a risk factor to frailty. However, the causal association between BP and frailty remains not well determined. The purpose of this bi-directional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was to investigate the causal relationship between BP and frailty. Independent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) strongly (P < 5E-08) associated with systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and pulse pressure (PP) were selected as instrumental variables. Two different published genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on BP from the CHARGE (n = 810,865) and ICBP (n = 757,601) consortia were included. Summary-level data on frailty index (FI) were obtained from the latest GWAS based on UK Biobank and Swedish TwinGene cohorts (n = 175,226). Inverse variance weighted (IVW) approach with other sensitivity analyses were used to calculate the causal estimate. Using the CHARGE dataset, genetic predisposition to increased SBP (β = 0.135, 95% CI = 0.093 to 0.176, P = 1.73E-10), DBP (β = 0.145, 95% CI = 0.104 to 0.186, P = 3.14E-12), and PP (β = 0.114, 95% CI = 0.070 to 0.157, p = 2.87E-07) contributed to a higher FI, which was validated in the ICBP dataset. There was no significant causal effect of FI on SBP, DBP, and PP. Similar results were obtained from different MR methods, indicating good stability. There was potential heterogeneity detected by Cochran's Q test, but no horizontal pleiotropy was observed in MR-Egger intercept test (P > 0.05). These findings evinced that higher BP and PP were causally associated with an increased risk of frailty, suggesting that controlling hypertension could reduce the risk of frailty.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Various associations between social factors and motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) have been reported. However, whether social frailty (integrated from multiple social factors) is associated with MCR is still unclear. METHODS We included 4657 individuals without MCR at Round 1 of the NHATS as the discovery sample, and 3075 newly recruited individuals from Round 5 of the NHATS as the independent validation sample. Social frailty was assessed by five social items. MCR was defined as the presence of both subjective cognitive complaints and slow gait speed in individuals without dementia or mobility disability. RESULTS Compared with normal individuals, those with social frailty had higher risk of incident MCR (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.57, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.34-1.84). Each additional unfavorable social item was associated with an increased risk of MCR (HR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.22-1.43). DISCUSSION Social frailty was associated with an increased risk of incident MCR in older adults. HIGHLIGHTS Various associations between social factors and motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) have been reported. Social frailty that integrated from multiple social factors was associated with an increased risk of incident MCR. Social frailty should be included in the early screening of individuals to identify those at higher risk of MCR.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate anxiety, depression, loneliness, death anxiety, and quality of life and investigate their relationship with social frailty in the geriatric population. Additionally, it aimed to identify social frailty predictors. METHODS The study included 136 participants admitted to the geriatric outpatient clinic. The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRS-G), the Templer Death Anxiety Scale (T-DAS), the Loneliness Scale for the Elderly (LSE), the Quality of Life Scale (CASP-19), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Test (GAD-7), the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI), the FRAIL Scale, and the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) were performed. The TFI was used to collect data about social frailty. RESULTS There were 61.8% females, and the median age (min-max) was 72.2 (65.3-90.3) years. The prevalence rate of social frailty was 26.7%. The rates of depression, loneliness, anxiety, death anxiety, the burden of chronic disease, and frailty were higher in the social frailty group. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis revealed a strong relationship between social frailty status and widowhood (odds ratio (OR) 6.86; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 2.42-19.37; p < 0.001), moderate to severe anxiety symptoms (OR 4.37; 95% CI 1.08-17.68; p = 0.038), and a TFI-physical frailty score (OR 1.40; 95% CI 1.12-1.73; p = 0.002). CONCLUSION In older adults, the social dimension of frailty is associated with quality of life and psychological state. Physical frailty and sociodemographic characteristics may affect the development of social frailty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, oral frailty was proposed as a new concept regarding dental and oral health in older adults. Poor oral health is linked to preserving general health and has become a geriatric public health problem that deeply affects healthy aging. While in present, evidence on the prevalence associated with oral frailty in older adults remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the prevalence of oral frailty among older adults, stratified by relevant factors such as gender, source, study design, region, and the evaluation scales for oral frailty and provide an evidence-based foundation for healthcare professionals and policymakers to formulate relevant measures. METHODS Ten electronic databases were systematically searched from inception to September 2023, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Database (Sinomed), Weipu Database, and Wanfang database. Based on the Stata 15.0 software package, a random effect model was used to calculate the pooled prevalence of oral frailty among older adults. In addition, sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis, and meta-regression were conducted based on different study characteristics to detect heterogeneity sources. Funnel plots, Begg's and Egger's tests were used to evaluate the publication bias. RESULTS Eighteen studies with a total of 12,932 older adults were included for meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of oral frailty and oral pre-frailty was 24% (95% CI: 20-28%) and 57% (95% CI: 52-61%) respectively. Based on different assessment tools of oral frailty, the pooled prevalence of oral frailty was higher when using the OFI-8 scale (44.1%; 95% CI: 35.4-52.8%) than the OFI-6 scale (18.3%; 95% CI: 15.8-20.8%) or OF checklist (22.1%; 95% CI: 17.4-26.7%). The prevalence of oral frailty was higher among older adults in females (23.8%; 95% CI: 18.4-29.2%), hospital settings (31%, 95% CI: 16.6-45.5%), cross-sectional design (26.7%, 95% CI: 19.2-34.2%), and China (45.9%, 95% CI: 34.4-57.3%). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that oral frailty was common among older adults and various characteristics may affect its prevalence. Thus, healthcare professionals and policymakers should take oral frailty seriously in clinical practice and program planning and develop more preventive measures for oral frailty among older adults.

Abstract
Background Frailty is a significant healthcare challenge worldwide, increasing interest in developing more assessment tools covering for frailty. Recently, there has been a growing awareness of a correlation between social variables and frailty in older people. However, there is a lack of understanding of the social domains of frailty and the related adverse outcomes, particularly in the Asia-Pacific settings. This study aimed to characterize the social frailty domains and their health outcomes by overviewing the frailty screening tools in older people living in the Asia-Pacific region. Methodology A systematic review, using the PRISMA guideline, was conducted on articles published between 2002 and 2023 from three electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. A manual search was conducted for the references of the included articles using Google Scholar. Included articles must be in English and were based on empirical evidence published in peer-reviewed journals and focus on the assessment of domains of social frailty in older people aged 60 or over in the Asia-Pacific (East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania). Result A total of 31 studies were included in the thematic analysis, from which 16 screening tools measuring six social domains were reviewed. The six domains were: social networks, followed by social activities, social support, financial difficulties, social roles, and socioeconomic, arranged in four categories: social resources, social needs, social behaviors (or social activities), and general resources. The six social domains predicted mortality, physical difficulties, and disability incidence. Other adverse health outcomes were also associated with these social domains, including cognitive disorders, mental illness, and nutritional disorders (n = 5 domains each), dementia (n = 4 domains), and oral frailty, hearing loss, obesity, and chronic pain (n = 3 domains each). Conclusion Overall, social frailty is a complex construct with multiple dimensions, including the frailty of social and general resources, social behaviors, and social needs, leading to several health disorders. The findings contribute to understanding the conceptual framework of social frailty in older people and its related health outcomes. Therefore, it could facilitate professionals and researchers to monitor and reduce the risks of adverse health outcomes related to each domain of social frailty, contributing to a better aging process.

Abstract
Complex interrelationships may exist among different types of frailty. This study aimed to evaluate the demographic and biological factors that influence the different types of frailty in community-dwelling older adults in Iran through a cross-sectional analysis of data obtained from the Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study. This study is an ongoing cohort study of people aged 60 years and over and employed a multistage stratified cluster random sampling. Anthropometric measures were obtained by nurses. The "Fried frailty phenotype" was defined as physical frailty. Cognitive frailty was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination. Social frailty was evaluated by some questions, and psychological frailty was assessed using a patient health questionnaire. Blood samples were taken after overnight fasting. All statistical analyses were performed using Stata12 (Texas, USA) and Python. Some type of frailty had been experienced by 62.27 % of the older adults. Cognitive frailty was the dominant type of frailty (55.69 %). Based on multivariate regression analysis, age, sex, education, and marital status were the influencing factors in all types of frailty. Network analysis revealed that physical, cognitive, psychological, and social frailty had synergistic effects on each other, and age and sex had dominant interactions with frailty types. Cognitive frailty was dominant compared with other types of frailty, indicating the need to detect cognitive frailty at the earliest stage and to implement an appropriate program to manage cognitive frailty in older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the prevalence and socio-economic determinants of frailty in older adults in Brazil and Chile using nationally representative survey data. STUDY DESIGN Analytical research using data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI) and the Chilean National Health Survey (ENS) conducted in Brazil and Chile between 2015 and 2017. METHODS The study included 5484 older adults aged 60 years or older in Brazil and 2031 in Chile. Frailty was measured using the FRAIL index, and logistic regression models were used to identify the determinants of frailty. RESULTS The prevalence of frailty is 15.6% and 12.6% in Brazil and Chile, respectively. Frailty is associated with several factors, including age, sex, living alone, residing in urban areas, and decreased life satisfaction. However, the analysis revealed notable differences between countries. A greater number of significant variables were associated with frailty in Brazil, whereas Chile displayed fewer categories with significant odds. Health insurance had no significant effect in either of the two countries. CONCLUSIONS The limitations in data sources and methodologies make it challenging to compare frailty determinants in Latin America. This study overcomes these barriers and shows that, even within the same region, significant differences exist. Levels and characteristics that are important in one country may not be so in another. The results emphasize the need to consider contextual factors in the implementation of emerging social and healthcare policies, such as home-based long-term care.

Abstract
Social frailty, along with physical and psychological frailties, is one of the components of frailty that has been reported to increase the incidence of adverse health outcomes. Although the prevalence of social frailty is relatively high, consensus on how to define and measure it is insufficient. In considering social frailty, living alone, interaction with neighbors, and social participation are important indicators, and interaction with neighbors and social participation, which are modifiable factors, are important countermeasures. The promotion of these social activities will contribute to extending healthy life expectancy-for example, by promoting physical activity. However, older people's physical and social activities have been severely constrained by the coronavirus pandemic since 2020. In the future, it will be necessary to fully understand the characteristics and significance of social frailty and develop appropriate countermeasures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the sustainable development goals' (SDGs) primary goals (Goal 3) is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for persons of all ages. While extensive literature documents the link between physical frailty and low life satisfaction (LLS) among older adults, research of this nature is limited within low and middle-income countries including India. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between physical frailty and life satisfaction among community-dwelling older men and women in India. METHODS Data come from the 2017-18 wave 1 of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), with a sample of 30 390 individuals aged 60 and above (14 559 men and 15 831 women). Physical frailty was assessed using an adapted version of the frailty phenotype developed by Fried and colleagues. Ordered logistic regression models are employed to examine the association between physical frailty and life satisfaction. RESULTS The prevalence of frailty was higher in older women than men (32.2% vs. 27.5%). Nearly 30.4% of men and 33.8% of women reported having LLS. However, after adjusting for the selected confounders, women were less likely (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.92; CI: 0.87-0.97) to report LLS compared to men. The physically frail older adults were more likely (aOR: 1.40; CI: 1.27-1.55) to report LLS relative to their physically stronger counterparts. Moreover, we found that frail older men had higher odds of reporting LLS than non-frail older men (aOR: 1.25; CI: 1.09-1.43). Also, non-frail older women had lower odds of reporting LLS than non-frail older men (aOR: 0.80; CI: 0.67-0.95). CONCLUSIONS Findings of our study suggest that policies and programs to address later life well-being need to consider gender differences. Doing so would not only help identify older adults most at risk of LLS, but gender differentiated policies would help streamline health expenditures and costs typically relegated to assist all older adults without proper focus on the uniqueness of their social location.
