Concerted catalytic and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants over CuS/g-C3N4 catalysts under light and dark conditions

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) in environmental catalysis: Mechanisms, application, regulation strategies, and breakthroughs

The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) in supported catalysts plays a dominant role in catalytic degradation, upgrading, and remanufacturing of environmental pollutants. Previous studies have shown that SMSI is crucial in supported catalysts' activity and stability. However, for redox reactions catalyzed in environmental catalysis, the enhancement mechanism of SMSI-induced oxygen vacancy and electron transfer needs to be clarified. Additionally, the precise control of SMSI interface sites remains to be fully understood. Here we provide a systematic review of SMSI's catalytic mechanisms and control strategies in purifying gaseous pollutants, treating organic wastewater, and valorizing biomass solid waste. We explore the adsorption and activation mechanisms of SMSI in redox reactions by examining interfacial electron transfer, interfacial oxygen vacancy, and interfacial acidic sites. Furthermore, we develop a precise regulation strategy of SMSI from systematical perspectives of interface effect, crystal facet effect, size effect, guest ion doping, and modification effect. Importantly, we point out the drawbacks and breakthrough directions for SMSI regulation in environmental catalysis, including partial encapsulation strategy, size optimization strategy, interface oxygen vacancy strategy, and multi-component strategy. This review article provides the potential applications of SMSI and offers guidance for its controlled regulation in environmental catalysis.

Cation Exchange Reaction-Mediated Photothermal and Polarity-Switchable Photoelectrochemical Dual-Readout Biosensor

Cation exchange (CE) is a burgeoning method for controlled crystal synthesis; however, its applications in bioanalysis are still in their infancy. Herein, we explored the transformation of ZnIn2S4 in properties after the CE reaction with Cu2+ ions; furthermore, the discrepancy was employed to design a dual-readout detection system of photothermal and polarity-switchable photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassays to realize reliable detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). In the presence of CEA, the CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) employed as dual-signal response probes would bond to the microplates and be acidolyzed by HCl to release Cu2+, which could replace Zn2+ and In3+ via the CE reaction. After the CE reaction is completed, the photocurrent would switch from a weak anodic photocurrent to a cathode one by using a 635 nm laser as a signal amplifier, while the photothermal signal would be enhanced with 808 nm laser illumination. On the basis of the polarity-switchable PEC strategy, CEA could be accurately detected from 0.1 to 50 ng mL-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 48 pg mL-1 (S/N = 3). Moreover, the photothermal assay for CEA detection possesses a linear range from 0.5 to 100 ng mL-1 with a LOD of 0.21 ng mL-1. In addition, the designed sensing platform only relies on devices with portability that are permitted for point-of-care detection.

Sunlight active cellulose/g-C3N4/TiO2nano-photocatalyst for simultaneous degradation of methylene blue dye and atenolol drug in real wastewater

The paper critically addresses two contemporary environmental challenges, the water crisis and the unrestricted discharge of organic pollutants in waterways together. An eco-friendly method was used to fabricate a cellulose/g-C3N4/TiO2photocatalytic composite that displayed a remarkable degradation of methylene blue dye and atenolol drug under natural sunlight. Introducing graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) onto pristine TiO2improved hybrid material's photonic efficacy and enhanced interfacial charge separation. Furthermore, immobilizing TiO2/g-C3N4on a semi-interpenetrating cellulose matrix promoted photocatalyst recovery and its reuse, ensuring practical affordability. Under optimized conditions, the nano-photocatalyst exhibited ∼95% degradation of both contaminants within two hours while retaining ∼55% activity after ten cycles demonstrating a promising photostability. The nano-photocatalyst caused 66% and 57% reduction in COD and TOC values in industrial wastewater containing these pollutants. The photocatalysis was fitted to various models to elucidate the degradation kinetics, while LC-MS results suggested the mineralization pathway of dye majorly via ring opening demethylation. >98% disinfection was achieved againstE. coli(104-105CFU·ml-1) contaminated water. This study thus paves multifaceted strategies to treat wastewater contaminants at environmental levels employing nano-photocatalysis.

Shape-controlled hollow Cu2O@CuS nanocubes with enhanced photocatalytic activities towards degradation of tetracycline

In view of recent advances in photodegradation of antibiotics, low cost and stable photocatalyst remain rare. In this article, shape-controlled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes with the larger specific surface area were successfully prepared via a simple template-engaged strategy. Cu2O nanocubes were synthesized through a reduction method as original templates, the core-shelled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes were formed by sulphuration with Na2S as sulphur source, and the Cu2O core can be incompletely removed by Na2S2O3 to generate the Cu2O@CuS nanoboxes. Herein, hierarchical nanoboxes with two-layered Cu2O@CuS were used as photocatalyst materials for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The obtained nanocubes manifested high specific surface area (39.65 m2 g-1) and large pore volume (12.3 cm3 g-1). The degradation performance for TC was investigated in detail, including the effect of parameters such as photocatalyst, pH and catalyst dosage. The results indicated that degradation efficiencies were higher than 90% under visible light. Moreover, the degradation efficiency was 71% after six times.

Efficient photo-assisted Fenton-like reaction of yolk-shell CuSe(Cu2Se)/g-C3N4 heterojunctions for methylene blue degradation

Herein, a CuSe(Cu₂Se) yolk-shell structure (CC) was synthesized when room temperature was 25 degree Celsius using Cu₂O as a soft template, and the g-C₃N₄/CuSe(Cu₂Se) heterojunction (CC-G) was formed by coupling appropriate amounts of g-C₃N₄ in the selenization process to provide a novel, green, economical, and efficient photo-Fenton catalytic material. Photo-Fenton degradation experiments proved that in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), a small amount of g-C₃N₄ hybridization on Cu-based Fenton catalysts significantly improved methylene blue (MB) degradation. The suitable amount of g-C₃N₄ hybridization was selected according to the degradation efficiency. The mass of g-C₃N₄ constituted 20% of the mass of the Cu₂O soft template. The composite material prepared using this combination (CC-G-20) exhibited the best MB degradation performance. The MB degradation efficiency in the CC-G-20/H₂O₂/visible light system was almost 98.3% after 60 min, which is higher than those of the parent materials (g-C₃N₄, 12.7%; CC, 58.6%) and had cyclic stability. The catalytic system can also stably degrade MB under dark conditions, where the MB degradation was almost 82% after 60 min. The heterojunction prevented excessive electrons and holes (e ^- and h⁺) recombination, stabilizing the reactive active substance of hydroxyl in the photo-Fenton-like catalytic system. Electron paramagnetic resonance and photoluminescence experiments confirmed this inference.

Dual step-scheme heterojunction with full-visible-light-harvesting towards synergistic persulfate activation for enhanced photodegradation

The occurrence of micropollutants in aquatic media raises great concern because of their biological toxicity and persistence. Herein, visible-light-driven photocatalyst titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride/triiron tetraoxide (TiO_2-x/g-C₃N₄/Fe₃O₄, TCNF) with oxygen vacancies (O_v) was prepared via a facile hydrothermal-calcination method. The complementary visible-light co-absorption among semiconductors enhances light-harvesting efficiency. The built-in electric field formed during Fermi level alignment drives photoinduced electron transfer to improve charge separation across the interfaces. The increased light-harvesting and favorable energy band bending significantly enhance the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, TCNF_-5-500/persulfate system could effectively photodegrade bis-phenol A within 20 min under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, the superior durability, non-selective oxidation, adaptability, and eco-friendliness of the system were confirmed by different reaction conditions and biotoxicity assessment. Furthermore, the photodegradation reaction mechanism was presented according to the major reactive oxygen species produced in the system. Thus, this study constructed a dual step-scheme heterojunction by tuning visible-light absorption and energy band structure to increase the charge transfer efficiency and photogenerated carrier lifetime, which has great potential for environmental remediation using visible photocatalysis.

Synergetic Catalytic and Photocatalytic Performances of Tin-Doped BiFeO3/Graphene Nanoplatelet Hybrids under Dark and Light Conditions

Because of a rapidly growing need for water, it is essential to find new fast and reliable ways of water purification from organic pollutants. For removing organic azo dyes from water, various catalysts and photocatalysts have been designed to meet crucial water needs. In this study tin (Sn) doped bismuth ferrite (BFO) nanoparticles have been synthesized using the sol-gel technique. Further, BFSO/GNP nanohybrids were synthesized by mixing BFSO nanoparticles with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) via a simple and cost effective coprecipitation process. XRD and SEM showed that BFSO/GNP nanohybrids are well grown in crystal structure along with uniform and homogeneous morphology. XPS supported the elemental composition and interface bonding of both materials present inside the nanohybrids. DRS and catalytic activities showed that BFSO/GNP nanohybrids are both dark and light active species for performing dye degradation activities during water purification. The as-synthesized nanohybrids provided efficient dye removal from water even in the absence of light owing to the presence of defects and trap-state carriers (electrons) inside the graphene sheets. The optimized nanohybrid BFSO-15/GNP showed 100% dye removal in 60 min with 90% catalytic activity under dark. The recyclability test showed stable and repeatable performance of BFSO/GNP nanohybrids up to 10 cycles of catalytic activities.

Copper sulfide and zinc oxide hybrid nanocomposite for wastewater decontamination of pharmaceuticals and pesticides

In this work, hybrid nanocomposites of CuS QDs @ ZnO photocatalysts are fabricated through a facile microwave-assisted (MW) hydrothermal method as a green preparation process. The prepared photocatalysts (PCs) are employed under simulated sunlight (SL) for the degradation of ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, ibuprofen pharmaceuticals, methylene blue dye, and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) pesticide. The prepared photocatalysts are characterized in detail using several compositional, optical, and morphological techniques. The influence of the CuS (QDs) wt. % on morphological, structural, as well as photocatalytic degradation efficiency have been investigated. The small displacement between the (107) plane of CuS and the (102) plane of ZnO can confirmed the existence of lattice interaction, implying the formation of p-n heterojunctions. TEM and XRD results demonstrated that the CuS QDs are established and uniformly decorated on the surface of ZnO NRs, confirming the forming of an efficient CuS QDs @ ZnO heterojunction nanostructures. The CuS QDs @ ZnO hybrid nanocomposites showed enhancement in crystallinity, light absorption, surface area, separation of e-h pair and inhibition in their recombination at an interfacial heterojunction. In addition it is found that, 3 wt% CuS QDs @ ZnO has the foremost influence. The results showed improvement of photocatalytic activity of the 3% CuS QDs @ ZnO hybrid nanocomposite as compared to the bare ZnO nanorods. The impressive photocatalytic performance of CuS @ ZnO heterostructure nanorods may be attributed to efficient charge transfer. The prepared CuS QDs @ ZnO hybrid nanocomposites exhibited 100% removal for MB dye, after 45 min, and after 60 min for ibuprofen, ciprofloxacin pharmaceuticals, and 2.4.5 trichloro phenoxy acetic acid pesticide with the catalyst amount of 0.2 g/L. Although 100% removal of ceftriaxone pharmaceutical acheived after 90 min. In addition CuS QDs @ ZnO hybrid nanocomposites exhibited complete removal of COD for ibuprofen, ceftriaxone pharmaceuticals and 2.4.5 trichloro phenoxy acetic acid pesticide after 2 h with no selectivity. Briefly, 3% CuS QDs@ZnO hybrid nanocomposites can be considered as promising photoactive materials under simulated sunlight for wastewater decontamination.

In situself-assembly fabrication of ultrathin sheet-like CuS modified g-C3N4heterojunction and its enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance

Photocatalysts with heterojunction structure have been widely used for organic degradation. In this study, CuS/g-C₃N₄heterojunction was formed byin situself-assembly via a simply hydrothermal method. A series of characterizations were applied to analyzing the morphology, structure, optical properties and photo-induced electron transfer of the samples. The effect of CuS mass ratio in the CuS/g-C₃N₄composite on methyl blue (10 mg l^-1) degradation under visible-light illumination was discussed. When CuS mass ratio was 60%, CuS/g-C₃N₄behaved the highest photocatalytic efficiency which is 17 times higher than that of pure g-C₃N₄, and the optimal heterojunction exhibited promising photocatalytic stability as well. The synthesized CuS/g-C₃N₄with intimate contact and promising photocatalytic performance provides important implications on analogous researches on g-C₃N₄-based heterojunctions for photocatalytic applications.

Ultrasound-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of SrSnO3/g-C3N4 Heterojunction with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance for Ciprofloxacin under Visible Light

In this work, an SrSnO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction with different dosage of SrSnO3 was fabricated by an ultrasound-assisted hydrothermal approach and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Ciprofloxacin was adopted to assess the degradation performance, and the sample combined with 40% SrSnO3 eliminated 93% of ciprofloxacin (20 mg/L) within 3 h under visible light, which is 6.6 and 1.7 times greater than for SrSnO3 and g-C3N4, respectively. Furthermore, 85% CIP was extinguished after five cycles of a photocatalytic process. Ultimately, a possible photocatalytic mechanism was dissected.

A Tumor-Specific Ferric-Coordinated Epigallocatechin-3-gallate cascade nanoreactor for glioblastoma therapy

Introduction

Numerous options for treatment of glioblastoma have been explored; however, single-drug therapies and poor targeting have failed to provide effective drugs. Chemotherapy has significant antitumor effect, but the efficacy of single-drug therapies in the clinic is limited over a long period of time. Thus, novel therapeutic approaches are necessary to address these critical issues.

Objectives

The present study, we investigated a tumor-specific metal-tea polyphenol-based cascade nanoreactor for chemodynamic therapy-enhanced chemotherapy.

Methods

HA-EGCG was synthesized for the first time by introducing epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) into the skeleton of hyaluronic acid (HA) with reducible disulfide bonds. A rapid and green method was developed to fabricate the metal-tea polyphenol networks (MTP) with an HA-EGCG coating (DOX@MTP/HA-EGCG) based on Fe3+ and EGCG for targeted delivery of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). GL261 cells were used to evaluate the antitumor efficacy of the DOX@MTP/HA-EGCG nanoreactor in vitro and in vivo.

Results

DOX@MTP/HA-EGCG nanoreactors were able to disassemble, resulting in escape of their components from lysosomes and precise release of DOX, Fe3+, and EGCG in the tumor cells. HA-EGCG depleted glutathione to amplify oxidative stress and enhance chemodynamic therapy. The results of in vivo experiments suggested that DOX@MTP/HA-EGCG specifically accumulates at the CD44-overexpressing GL261 tumor sites and that sustained release of DOX and Fe3+ induced a distinct therapeutic outcome.

Conclusions

The findings suggested the developed nanoreactor has promising potential as a future GL261 glioblastoma therapy.

Recent advances in graphitic carbon nitride as a catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), an appealing metal-free polymer, has featured in extensive research in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions owing to its advantages of stable chemical and thermal properties, ease of structural regulation and unique redox ability. However, there are still some gaps in the understanding of the mechanism and fate of g-C₃N₄ and its derivatives in heterogeneous Fenton reaction degradation of contaminants. This paper gives systematic emphasis to the development and progress of g-C₃N₄ and its composites as catalysts in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions. The main synthesis strategies of g-C₃N₄ composites are discussed, including calcination, hydrothermal method and self-assembly method. Then, the key catalytic properties of g-C₃N₄ in Fenton-like applications, including anchoring nanoparticles, increasing specific surface area and exposed active surface sites, as well as regulating charge transfer reactions, are highlighted. Special emphasis is placed on its multifunctional role in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions and the mechanisms involved in the activation of hydrogen peroxide, persulfates, and photocatalytic activation of persulfate. Lastly, the existing challenges and possible development direction of g-C₃N₄-coupling Fenton reactions are proposed. It is believed that this paper will bring useful information for the development of graphitic carbon nitride in both laboratory studies and practical applications.

In-situ synthesis of CuS@carbon nanocomposites and application in enhanced photo-fenton degradation of 2,4-DCP

Novel CuS nanoparticles embedded into carbon nanosheets (CuS@CNs) were prepared in situ by applying wheat straw cellulose/feather protein hydrogel beads as templates and were used to photocatalytically activate H₂O₂ to degrade 2,4-dichlorphenol (2,4-DCP). The photo-Fenton catalytic properties of the nanocomposite catalysts obtained under different synthetic conditions, including different Cu²⁺ concentrations, S^2- concentrations and calcination temperatures, were evaluated. The results showed that CuS@CNs with 0.1 M Cu²⁺, 0.1 M S^2- at 800 °C presented excellent photo-Fenton degradation performance for 2,4-DCP (25 mg/L) in the presence of H₂O₂ and could remove 90% of 2,4-DCP in 2.5 h. The water quality parameters (pH, Cl^-, HCO₃^-, H₂PO₄^- and SO₄^2-) exhibited different effects on the photocatalytic degradation process. The catalytic activity of the CuS@CNs used in the cycle could be recovered after thermal regeneration. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments confirmed that ·OH species were main active radicals contributing to the degradation of 2,4-DCP. The photocatalytic mechanism of CuS@CNs was also explored by photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Incorporation of carbon nanosheets could significantly improve the separation of photogenerated charge carriers to stimulate pollutant degradation by CuS. Based on the detected intermediates, the degradation pathway of 2,4-DCP in the CuS@CNs/H₂O₂ reaction system was also proposed.

Robustness of anaerobes exposed to cyanuric acid contaminated wastewater and achieving efficient removal via optimized co-digestion scheme

The impact of various industrial pollutants on anaerobes and the biodegradation potentials need much emphasis. This study aims to investigate the response of anaerobic microbial systems to cyanuric acid (CA) exposure; CA is toxic and possible carcinogen. First, the long-term exposure of mixed culture bacteria (i.e., municipal sludge) to low-strength wastewater containing 20 mg/L CA was conducted in an up-flow anaerobic staged reactor. Stable performance and sludge granulation were observed, and the microbial community structure showed the progression of genus Acinetobacter known as CA degrader. Second, batch-mode experiment was performed to examine the CA biodegradability at higher doses (up to 250 mg/L of CA) in the absence and presence of glucose as a co-substrate; response surface-based optimization was used to design this experiment and to estimate the optimum CA-glucose combination. CA removal of 77-98% was achieved when CA was co-digested with glucose (250-1,000 mg/L), after 7 days-incubation at temperature of 37 °C, compared to 34% when CA was solely digested. Further, the obtained methane yield dropped when CA exceeded over 125 mg/L, though the deterioration was mitigated by addition of higher concentration of glucose. Overall, we conclude that CA is efficiently degraded under anaerobic conditions when being co-digested with readily assimilable substrate.
