Abstract
The rational design of heterostructured nanocrystals (HNCs) is of great significance for developing highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. However, a significant challenge still lies in realizing the controllable synthesis of desired HNCs directly onto a support and exploring their structure-activity-dependent HER performance. Herein, we reported various controllable Pd7@Ptx core-shell HNCs with optimal hybrid structures via a photochemical deposition strategy. The growth patterns of a Pt shell can be finely controlled by adjusting the growth kinetics, resulting in a varying deposition rate. In particular, the as-prepared Pd7@Pt3 HNCs with a Pt shell in the Stranski-Krastanov mode showed the best performances over a wide pH range media, delivering low overpotentials of 33, 18 and 49 mV, resulting in a catalytic current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low effective catalyst loading of 0.021 mg cm-2. The resulting Tafel slopes were 23.1, 52.6 and 42.7 mV dec-1 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, respectively. It was found that the increased fraction of unsaturated coordination of Pt islands in the resultant material is the key to the enhanced and robust HER activity, which has been confirmed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This strategy could be extended to the rational design and synthesis of other heterostructured catalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract
The catalytic dehydrogenation of alkanes constitutes a key step for the industrial conversion of these inert sp3-bonded carbon chains into other valuable unsaturated chemicals. To this end, platinum-based materials are among the most widely used catalysts. In this work, we characterize the thermal dehydrogenation of n-octane (n-C8H18) on Pt(111) under ultra-high vacuum using synchrotron-radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption and scanning tunneling microscopy, combined with ab initio calculations. At low activation temperatures, two different dehydrogenation stages are observed. At 330 K, n-C8H18 effectively undergoes a 100% regioselective single C-H bond cleavage at one methyl end. At 600 K, the chemisorbed molecules undergo a double dehydrogenation, yielding double bonds in their carbon skeletons. Diffusion of the dehydrogenated species leads to the formation of carbon molecular clusters, which represents the first step towards poisoning of the catalyst. Our results reveal the chemical mechanisms behind the first stages of alkane dehydrogenation on a platinum model surface at the atomic scale, paving the way for designing more efficient dehydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract
This study proposes the unsaturated coordination index, σ, as a potential descriptor of the stability of metal-oxide surfaces cleaved from bulk. The value of σ, the number of missing bonds per unit area, can be obtained very quickly using only crystallographic data, namely, the bulk geometry. The surface energies of various binary oxides, with and without atom relaxation, were calculated. Their correlations with σ had good coefficients of determination (R2) values, particularly in high-symmetry crystals. The proposed descriptor is very useful for an initial evaluation of stable metal-oxide surfaces without conducting any surface model calculations.

Abstract
Stabilizing metal nanoparticles is vital for large scale implementations of supported metal catalysts, particularly for a sustainable transition to clean energy, e.g., H2 production. In this work, iridium sub-nanometric particles were deposited on commercial graphite and on graphitic carbon nitride by a wet impregnation method to investigate the metal-support interaction during the hydrous hydrazine decomposition reaction. To establish a structure-activity relationship, samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The catalytic performance of the synthesized materials was evaluated under mild reaction conditions, i.e. 323 K and ambient pressure. The results showed that graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) enhances the stability of Ir nanoparticles compared to graphite, while maintaining remarkable activity and selectivity. Simulation techniques including Genetic Algorithm geometry screening and electronic structure analyses were employed to provide a valuable atomic level understanding of the metal-support interactions. N anchoring sites of GCN were found to minimise the thermodynamic driving force of coalescence, thus improving the catalyst stability, as well as to lead charge redistributions in the cluster improving the resistance to poisoning by decomposition intermediates.

Abstract
Embedding energetically stable single metal atoms in the surface of Pt nanocatalysts exposed to varied temperature (T) and hydrogen pressure (P) could open up new possibilities in selective and dynamical engineering of alloyed Pt catalysts, particularly interesting for hydrogenation reactions. In this work, an environmental segregation energy model is developed to predict the stability and the surface composition evolution of 24 Metal M-promoted Pt surfaces (with M: Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Pd, Co, Rh and Ir) under varied T and P. Counterintuitive to expectations, the results show that the more reactive alloy component (i.e., the one forming the strongest chemical bond with the hydrogen) is not the one that segregates to the surface. Moreover, using DFT-based Multi-Scaled Reconstruction (MSR) method and by extrapolation of M-promoted Pt nanoparticles (NPs), the shape dynamics of M-Pt are investigated under the same ranges of T and P. The results show that under low hydrogen pressure and high temperature ranges, Ag and Au—single atoms (and Cu to a less extent) are energetically stable on the surface of truncated octahedral and/or cuboctahedral shaped NPs. This indicated that coinage single-atoms might be used to tune the catalytic properties of Pt surface under hydrogen media. In contrast, bulk stability within wide range of temperature and pressure is predicted for all other M-single atoms, which might act as bulk promoters. This work provides insightful guides and understandings of M-promoted Pt NPs by predicting both the evolution of the shape and the surface compositions under reaction gas condition.

Abstract
A wide range of systems, both engineered and natural, feature aqueous electrolyte solutions at interfaces. In this study, the structure and dynamics of water at the two prevalent crystallographic terminations of gamma-alumina, [110] and [100], and the influence of salts─sodium chloride, ammonium acetate, barium acetate, and barium nitrate on such properties─were investigated using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The resulting interfacial phenomena were quantified from simulation trajectories via atomic density profiles, angle probability distributions, residence times, 2-D density distributions within the hydration layers, and hydrogen bond density profiles. Analysis and interpretation of the results are supported by simulation snapshots. Taken together, our results show stronger interaction and closer association of water with the [110] surface, compared to [100], while ion-induced disruption of interfacial water structure was more prevalent at the [100] surface. For the latter, a stronger association of cations is observed, namely sodium and ammonium, and ion adsorption appears determined by their size. The differences in surface-water interactions between the two terminations are linked to their respective surface features and distributions of surface groups, with atomistic-scale roughness of the [110] surface promoting closer association of interfacial water. The results highlight the fundamental role of surface characteristics in determining surface-water interactions, and the resulting effects on ion-surface and ion-water interactions. Since the two terminations of gamma-alumina considered represent interfaces of significance to numerous industrial applications, the results provide insights relevant for catalyst preparation and adsorption-based water treatment, among other applications.

Abstract
Quantifying the distances between metallic sites and acid sites is crucial for tuning the catalytic activity and selectivity of bifunctional catalysts involving sub-nanometric platinum (Pt) nano-particles (NP) highly dispersed on a chlorinated alumina support. Thanks to the quantitative use of high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy in the high angle annular dark field mode, we first highlight the presence of few Pt NP together with Pt single atoms (SA) on γ-alumina supports exhibiting various morphologies (flat-like or egg-like), and chlorine (Cl) and Pt loadings. We demonstrate that increasing the Pt loading does not impact the NP sizes but only the Pt NP inter-distances, whereas the Cl loading influences the SA/NP proportion. Then, we establish a thorough geometrical model which accounts for the way in which the global average metallic - acid inter-site distances evolve from 1 nm to 6 nm as a function of three key physico-chemical descriptors: alumina morphologies, chlorine contents and size factor of alumina particles (directly linked to specific surface area). Considering that Cl is predominantly located at alumina crystallite edges, the morphology strongly impacts the Cl edge saturation: 0.4% for flat-like, and 1.2% for egg-like alumina at fixed specific surface area (∼200 m2 g-1). At Cl edge saturation, the inter-site distance is found to be 3 nm for flat-like, and 1 nm for egg-like alumina. However, for fixed Cl loading, the inter-site distance is less discriminated by the morphology. We discuss these trends in the case of naphtha reforming catalysts and thanks to the as-obtained geometrical model, we identify the key alumina descriptors to tune the inter-site distance.

Abstract
The importance of the "heterogeneity" of a Pd monolayer induced by interaction with a semi-ionic support in catalysis was evaluated. The geometry of the Pd monolayer was optimized on the (100) plane of γ-Al2O3 at fixed unit cell parameters defined by the oxide. Simulation of the deposition of a whole Pd monolayer in the flat Pd(100) form cut from the bulk led to the formation of a slightly distorted Pd(111) monolayer. The subsequent chemisorption or dissociation of CH4 or H2O on the Pd(111) layer resulted in a new hybrid Pd(100)/(111) structure containing alternating elements of (100) and (111) planes (the parallel bands of squares and triangles), which are similar for both CH4 and H2O reactions, and two isolated Pd mono-vacancies, respectively. The hybrid Pd(100)/(111) layer without chemisorbed species was found to be more stable than the initial distorted Pd(111) layer. The catalytic capabilities of these monolayer structures were investigated for the dissociation of methane and the water-gas shift reaction (WGSR) due to the lower predicted activation barriers for CH4, H2O, and O2 dissociation on the hybrid Pd(100)/(111) layer compared to that on the pure (bulk) Pd(100) surface. Moreover, the exothermic heats of these reactions were calculated to be moderate instead of endothermic heats on the Pd(100) or Pd(111) surfaces. The heats of H2O and NH3 adsorption on various monolayers were tested, revealing their dependence on Pd atomic charges. The relevance of the model of the heterogeneous Pd monolayer for explaining the maximum reaction rate experimentally observed at different Pd coverages was discussed. The transferability of the geometry and the extent of charge inhomogeneity of the hybrid monolayer without vacancies were also tested on the same γ-Al2O3(100) support for Pt, Rh, and Ag.

Abstract
Understanding and controlling molecular recognition mechanisms at a chiral solid interface is a continuously addressed challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, the molecular recognition of a chiral peptide-functionalized metal–organic framework (MOF) catalyst towards a pro-chiral substrate is evaluated experimentally and in silico. The MIL-101 metal–organic framework is used as a macroligand for hosting a Noyori-type chiral ruthenium molecular catalyst, namely (benzene)Ru@MIL-101-NH-Gly-Pro. Its catalytic perfomance toward the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of acetophenone into R- and S-phenylethanol are assessed. The excellent match between the experimentally obtained enantiomeric excesses and the computational outcomes provides a robust atomic-level rationale for the observed product selectivities. The unprecedented role of the MOF in confining the molecular Ru-catalyst and in determining the access of the prochiral substrate to the active site is revealed in terms of highly face-specific host–guest interactions. The predicted surface-specific face differentiation of the prochiral substrate is experimentally corroborated since a three-fold increase in enantiomeric excess is obtained with the heterogeneous MOF-based catalyst when compared to its homogeneous molecular counterpart. Understanding and controlling molecular recognition mechanisms at a chiral solid interface has been addressed in metal–organic framework catalysts for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation reaction.![]()

Abstract
Alumina supported Pt nanoclusters under a hydrogen environment play a crucial role in many heterogeneous catalysis applications. We conducted grand canonical genetic algorithm simulations for supported Pt8 clusters in a hydrogen gas environment to study the intracluster, cluster-support, and cluster-adsorbate interactions. Two alumina surfaces, α-Al2O3(0001) and γ-Al2O3(100), and two conditions, T = 600 °C, pH2 = 0.1 bar and T = 25 °C, pH2 = 1.0 bar, were considered corresponding to low and high hydrogen chemical potential μH, respectively. The low free energy ensemble of Pt8 is decorated by a medium (2-12 H), respectively, high (20-30 H), number of hydrogen atoms under equilibrium at low μH, respectively, high μH, and undergoes different morphological transformations on the two surfaces. On α-Al2O3(0001), Pt8 is mostly 3D but very fluxional in structure at low μH and converts to open one-layer 2D structures with minimal fluxionality at high μH, whereas on γ-Al2O3(100), the exact opposite occurs: Pt8 clusters present one-layer 2D shapes at low μH and switch to compact 3D shapes under high μH, during which the Pt8 cluster preserves moderate fluxionality. Further analysis reveals a similar Pt-Pt bond length increase when switching from low μH to high μH on both surfaces although morphological transformations are different. Electronic structure analysis shows the existence of bonding interactions between Pt and Lewis acidic Al3+ sites along with the Pt-O interaction, which implies the necessity to include Al neighbors to discuss the electronic structure of small Pt clusters.

Abstract
Transition aluminum oxides, such as γ-Al2O3 or alumina, are widely used in many different technical applications that rely on the surface reactivity of this material at the solid liquid interface. The speciation of surface sites of this material confronts several obstacles. On the one hand, alumina is a poorly crystalline oxide, thus allowing for a limited amount of empirical structural information for an important number of surface sites with different trends in reactivity and, on the other hand, it is a metastable material. In this work, we show several ways in which the multisite complexation model, combined with atomistic information from density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), can manage to perform speciation calculations of γ-Al2O3 surface sites at the solid liquid interface. Although the results are in good qualitative agreement with experimental titration curves, and they can serve as a guide for the interpretation of the reactivity of this material at the initial stages of an impregnation experiment and chemical weathering phenomena, this work highlights the need of more complex AIMD simulations to accurately model these phenomena in γ-Al2O3 surface/liquid interfaces.

Abstract
The kinetic stability of any material in water relies on the presence of surface weak spots responsible for chemical weathering by hydrolysis. Being able to identify the atomistic nature of these sites and the first steps of transformation is therefore critical to master the decomposition processes. This is the challenge that we tackle here: combining experimental and modeling studies we investigate the stability of alumina in water. Exploring the reactivity of shape-controlled crystals, we identify experimentally a specific facet as the location of the weak spots. Using biased ab initio molecular dynamics, we recognize this weak spot as a surface exposed tetra-coordinated Al atom and further provide a detailed mechanism of the first steps of hydrolysis. This understanding is of great importance to heterogeneous catalysis where alumina is a major support. Furthermore, it paves the way to atomistic understanding of interfacial reactions, at the crossroad of a variety of fields of research. Gaining atomistic level understanding of alumina/water interfaces is key to unraveling alumina decomposition processes. Here the authors combine the experimental synthesis of shape-controlled γ-Al2O3 samples with metadynamics simulations to identify the surface weak spots responsible for alumina decomposition.

Abstract
Reactivity studies on catalytic transition metal clusters are usually performed on a single global minimum structure. With the example of a Pt13 cluster under a pressure of hydrogen, we show from first-principle calculations that low energy metastable structures of the cluster can play a major role for catalytic reactivity and that hence consideration of the global minimum structure alone can severely underestimate the activity. The catalyst is fluxional with an ensemble of metastable structures energetically accessible at reaction conditions. A modified genetic algorithm is proposed to comprehensively search for the low energy metastable ensemble (LEME) structures instead of merely the global minimum structure. In order to reduce the computational cost of density functional calculations, a high dimensional neural network potential is employed to accelerate the exploration. The presence and influence of LEME structures during catalysis is discussed by the example of H covered Pt13 clusters for two reactions of major importance: hydrogen evolution reaction and methane activation. The results demonstrate that although the number of accessible metastable structures is reduced under reaction condition for Pt13 clusters, these metastable structures can exhibit high activity and dominate the observed activity due to their unique electronic or structural properties. This underlines the necessity of thoroughly exploring the LEME structures in catalysis simulations. The approach enables one to systematically address the impact of isomers in catalysis studies, taking into account the high adsorbate coverage induced by reaction conditions.

Abstract
Phase diagrams from DFT modeling suggest that zeolite-supported Rh4 clusters may be appropriate for the catalytic hydrogenation of ethene to ethane, whereas Rh3 clusters favor the formation of the stable adsorbed ethylidyne species, preventing further hydrogenation.

Abstract
Due to the depletion of petroleum and the recent shale gas revolution, the dropping of the price for light alkanes makes alkanes an attractive feedstock for the production of light alkenes and other valuable chemicals. Understanding the mechanism for the activation of C-H bonds in hydrocarbons provides fundamental insights into this process and a guideline for the optimization of catalysts used for the processing of light alkanes. In the last two decades, density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful tool to explore elementary steps and mechanisms of many heterogeneously catalyzed processes at the atomic scale. This review describes recent progress on computational understanding of heterogeneous catalytic dehydrogenation reactions of light alkanes. We start with a short description on basic concepts and principles of DFT as well as its application in heterogeneous catalysis. The activation of C-H bonds over transition metal and alloy surfaces are then discussed in detail, followed by C-H activation over oxides, zeolites and catalysts with single atoms as active sites. The origins of coking formation are also discussed followed by a perspective on directions of future research.

Abstract
We present an extensive study of Pt₁₃ clusters embedded in a Na-Y zeolite, by comparing calculations for isolated clusters to experimental data. We perform structural refinements for various geometries involving the isolated clusters and calculate the corresponding x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra, from the joint perspective of pseudopotential plane wave calculations and real space multiple scattering theory. Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling significantly improves the previous scalar relativistic predictions of magnetic properties. The ensemble of embedded Pt₁₃ is found to be dominated by a non-magnetic cuboctahedral geometry. One of the implications is that the ground state of Pt₁₃ clusters in the zeolite environment is different from that of isolated particles. We investigate several isomers that yield a magnetic signature. Furthermore, their abundance was estimated by direct comparison with experiment. We found that one third of the magnetic moment of Pt₁₃ comes from the orbital contribution, in agreement with the experimental value. We therefore provide theoretical proof of the extraordinary orbital magnetization in Pt13 clusters.
