Lattice-Strained Bimetallic Nanocatalysts: Fundamentals of Synthesis and Structure

Bimetallic nanostructured catalysts have shown great promise in the areas of energy, environment and magnetics. Tunable composition and electronic configurations due to lattice strain at bimetal interfaces have motivated researchers worldwide to explore them industrial applications. However, to date, the fundamentals of the synthesis of lattice-mismatched bimetallic nanocrystals are still largely uninvestigated for most supported catalyst materials. Therefore, in this work, we have conducted a detailed review of the synthesis and structural characterization of bimetallic nanocatalysts, particularly for renewable energies. In particular, the synthesis of Pt, Au and Pd bimetallic particles in a liquid phase has been critically discussed. The outcome of this review is to provide industrial insights of the rational design of cost-effective nanocatalysts for sustainable conversion technologies.

Glycerol Electro-Oxidation in Alkaline Medium with Pt-Fe/C Electrocatalysts Synthesized by the Polyol Method: Increased Selectivity and Activity Provided by Less Expensive Catalysts

We have investigated platinum catalysts containing iron as a modifier to obtain catalysts with superior electrocatalytic activity toward glycerol electro-oxidation in an alkaline medium. The electrocatalysts, supported on carbon Vulcan, were synthesized by the polyol method. The physicochemical characterization data showed that the metals were well distributed on the carbon support and had small particle size (2 nm). The Pt:Fe metal ratio differed from the nominal composition, indicating that reducing iron with platinum was difficult, even though some parameters of the synthesis process were changed. Electrochemical analyses revealed that PtFe/C was more active and stable than commercial Pt/C was, and analysis of the electrolysis by-products showed that iron addition to Pt/C boosted the glycerol conversion and selectivity for glyceric acid formation.

Ternary PtFeCo alloys on graphene with high electrocatalytic activities for methanol oxidation

Ternary PtFeCo alloys as alternatives to conventional Pt electrocatalysts are highly important in the field of the methanol oxidation reaction. In this study, we demonstrate a one-pot two-step reduction method for the synthesis of graphene supported PtFeCo alloy nanocomposites as an integrated binder-free catalyst. The synergistic effect of alloying with Fe and Co as well as graphene decorating contributes to an increase in the utilization of the noble metal, namely, reducing the amount of Pt in the nanocomposites to 7%. After tailoring the elemental composition of the alloys, Pt₅₂Fe₂₉Co₁₉@G-7% exhibits a mass activity/specific activity of 1758.2 mA mg^-1_Pt/3.42 mA cm^-2 that is 3.13/3.45 times that of commercial Pt/C in an acidic medium. Impressively, it showed a superior mass current density of 9356.1 mA mg^-1_Pt at 60 °C which is close to the operating temperature of direct methanol fuel cells. Moreover, the as-obtained Pt₅₂Fe₂₉Co₁₉@G-7% also exhibited excellent CO tolerance and reliable stability compared to commercial Pt/C. The structural characterization further verifies that the surface strain and electronic effect play a critical role in determining the electrocatalytic properties of PtFeCo@G nanocomposites for the methanol oxidation reaction.

Recent Advances in Facile Liquid Phase Epoxidation of Light Olefins over Heterogeneous Molybdenum Catalysts

Molybdenum complexes are versatile and efficient for liquid phase olefin epoxidation reactions. Rational design of catalysts is critical to achieve high atom efficiency during epoxidation processes. Although liquid phase epoxidation has been a popular topic for decades, three key issues, (a) rational control of morphology of molybdenum nanoparticles, (b) manipulating metal-support interaction and (c) altering electronic configuration at molybdenum center remains unsolved in this area. Therefore, in this paper, we have critically revised recent research progress on heterogeneous molybdenum catalysts for facile liquid phase olefin epoxidation in terms of catalyst synthesis, surface characterization, catalytic performance and structure-function relationship. Furthermore, plausible reaction mechanisms will be systematically discussed with the aim to provide insights into fundamental understanding on novel epoxidation chemistry.

Nanostructured Metal Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation and Oxidation of Cellulosic Biomass to Chemicals

Conversion of biomass to chemicals provides essential products to human society from renewable resources. In this context, achieving atom-economical and energy-efficient conversion with high selectivity towards target products remains a key challenge. Recent developments in nanostructured catalysts address this challenge reporting remarkable performances in shape and morphology dependent catalysis by metals on nano scale in energy and environmental applications. In this review, most recent advances in synthesis of heterogeneous nanomaterials, surface characterization and catalytic performances for hydrogenation and oxidation for biorenewables with plausible mechanism have been discussed. The perspectives obtained from this review paper will provide insights into rational design of active, selective and stable catalytic materials for sustainable production of value-added chemicals from biomass resources.

Titania-coated gold nanorods with expanded photocatalytic response. Enzyme-like glucose oxidation under near-infrared illumination

Gold nanorods coated with a uniform titanium dioxide nanoshell have been prepared and used as glucose-oxidase surrogates. Remarkably, this core-shell photocatalytic nanostructure has been able to induce complete oxidation of glucose at near room temperature (32-34 °C) in a wide range of pH values with the aid of a near-infrared (NIR) irradiation source. In contrast, the uncoated gold nanorods exhibit negligible photo-oxidation response under identical experimental conditions thereby proving the photoactivity of the titania shell towards glucose oxidation. The process takes place via in situ photo-generation of singlet oxygen or hydroxyl radicals as reactive oxidative species (ROS). This underlines the role played by the core nanorods as plasmonic light harvesters in the NIR range and constitutes the first example of a NIR-activated enzyme-like catalyst.

Selective glycerol oxidation over ordered mesoporous copper aluminum oxide catalysts

Ordered mesoporous Cu–Al₂O₃ catalysts were employed for the selective oxidation of glycerol into value-added products. Co-solvents such as ethanol, 1-propanol, and tert-butanol strongly improve the reaction kinetics.
