Abstract
We constructed a photoanode comprising the homogeneous water oxidation catalyst (WOC) Na8K8[Co9(H2O)6(OH)3(HPO4)2(PW9O34)3] (Co9POM) and nanoporous n-type TiO2 photoelectrodes (henceforth "TiO2-Co9POM") by first anchoring the cationic 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) ligand on a metal oxide light absorber, followed by treatment of the metal oxide-APS with a solution of the polyoxometalate WOC. The resulting TiO2-Co9POM photoelectrode exhibits a 3-fold oxygen evolution photocurrent enhancement compared to bare TiO2 in aqueous acidic conditions. Three-element (Co 2p, W 4f, and O 1s) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy studies before and after use indicate that surface-bound Co9POM retains its structural integrity throughout all photoelectrochemical water oxidation studies reported here. Extensive charge-transfer mechanistic studies by photoelectrochemical techniques and transient absorption spectroscopy elucidate that Co9POM serves as an efficient WOC, extracting photogenerated holes from TiO2 on the picosecond time scale. This is the first comprehensive mechanistic investigation elucidating the roles of polyoxometalates in POM-photoelectrode hybrid oxygen evolution reaction systems.

Abstract
To overcome the limitation of photocatalysts with dual functionality of water oxidation and proton reduction, we proposed a novel bismuth-based Ba2BiV3O11 (BBVO) photocatalyst, which can simultaneously drive the proton reduction reaction under UV light and water oxidation reaction under visible light. After doping with sulfur through an in situ vulcanization strategy, the light absorption and charge separation efficiencies of the sulfur-doped BBVO were significantly improved, thus boosting its oxygen evolution activity (64 μmol h-1) by more than 16 times compared with independent BBVO. The experimental results demonstrate that BBVO can be employed as a very promising bismuth-based photocatalyst for solar energy conversion.

Abstract
A structurally-new, carbon-free hexadecanuclear Ni-containing silicotungstate, [Ni16(H2O)15(OH)9(PO4)4(SiW9O34)3]19-, has been facilely synthesized using a one-pot, solution-based synthetic method systematically characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and several other techniques. The resulting complex works as a noble-metal-free catalyst for visible-light-driven catalytic generation of hydrogen, by coupling with a [Ir(coumarin)2(dtbbpy)][PF6] photosensitizer and a triethanolamine (TEOA) sacrificial electron donor. Under minimally optimized conditions, a turnover number (TON) of 842 was achieved for TBA-Ni16P4(SiW9)3-catalyzed hydrogen evolution system. The structural stability of TBA-Ni16P4(SiW9)3 catalyst under photocatalytic conditions was evaluated by the mercury-poisoning test, FT-IR, and DLS measurements. The photocatalytic mechanism was elucidated by both time-solved luminescence decay and static emission quenching measurements.

Abstract
The recombination loss of photo-carriers in photocatalytic systems fatally determines the energy conversion efficiency of photocatalysts. In this work, an electrostatic field was used to inhibit the recombination of photo-carriers in photocatalysts by separating photo-holes and photo-electrons in space. As a model structure, (010) facet-exposed BiVO4 nanowires were grown on PDMS-insulated piezo-substrate of piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The PZT substrate will generate an electrostatic field under a certain stress, and the photocatalytic behavior of BiVO4 nanowires is influenced by the electrostatic field. Our results showed that the photocatalytic performance of the BiVO4 nanowires in CO2 reduction in the negative electrostatic field is enhanced to 5.5-fold of that without electrostatic field. Moreover, the concentration of methane in the products was raised from 29% to 64%. The enhanced CO2 reduction efficiency is mainly attributed to the inhibited recombination loss of photo-carriers in the BiVO4 nanowires. The increased energy of photo-carriers and the enhanced surface absorption to polar molecules, which are CO in this case, were also play important roles in improving the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalyst and product selectivity. This work proposed an effective strategy to improve photo-carriers separation/transfer dynamics in the photocatalytic systems, which will also be a favorable reference for photovoltaic and photodetecting devices.

Abstract
Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4 ) as a metal oxidation semiconductor has stimulated extensive attention in the photocatalytic water splitting field. However, the poor transport ability and easy recombination of charge carriers limit photocatalytic water oxidation activity of pure BiVO4 . Herein, the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4 is enhanced via adjusting its morphology and combination co-catalyst. First, the Cu-BiVO4 was synthesized by copper doping to control the growth of {110} facet of BiVO4 , which is regarded for the separation of photo-generated charge carriers. Then the CoOx in-situ generated from K6 [SiCoII (H2 O)W11 O39 ] ⋅ 16H2 O was photo-deposited on Cu-BiVO4 surface as co-catalyst to speed up reaction kinetics. Cu-BiVO4 @CoOx hybrid catalyst shows highest photocatalytic activity and best stability among all the prepared catalysts. Oxygen evolution is about 34.6 μmol in pH 4 acetic acid buffer under 420 nm LED irradiation, which is nearly 20 times higher than that of pure BiVO4 . Apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) in 1 h and O2 yield are 1.83% and 23.1%, respectively. O2 evolution amount nearly maintains the original value even after 5 cycles.

Abstract
Cobalt polyoxometalates (Co-POMs) have emerged as promising water oxidation catalysts (WOCs), with the added advantage of their molecular nature despite being metal oxide fragments. In comparison with metal oxides, that do not offer well-defined active surfaces, POMs have a controlled, discrete structure that allows for precise correlations between experiment and computational analyses. Thus, beyond highly active WOCs, POMs are also model systems to gain deeper mechanistic understanding on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The tetracobalt Weakley sandwich [CoII 4(H2O)2(B-α-PW9O34)2]10- (Co4-WS) has been one of the most extensively studied. We have compared its activity with that of the iron analog [FeIII 4(H2O)2(B-α-PW9O34)2]6- (Fe4-WS) looking for the electronic effects determining their activity. Furthermore, the effect of POM nuclearity was also investigated by comparison with the iron- and cobalt-monosubstituted Keggin clusters. Electrocatalytic experiments employing solid state electrodes containing the POMs and the corresponding computational calculations demonstrate that CoII-POMs display better WOC activity than the FeIII derivatives. Moreover, the activity of POMs is less influenced by their nuclearity, thus Weakley sandwich moieties show slightly improved WOC characteristics than Keggin clusters. In good agreement with the experimental data, computational methods, including pK a values, confirm that the resting state for Fe-POMs in neutral media corresponds to the S1 (FeIII-OH) species. Overall, the proposed reaction mechanism for Fe4-WS is analogous to that found for Co4-WS, despite their electronic differences. The potential limiting step is a proton-coupled electron transfer event yielding the active S2 (FeIV[double bond, length as m-dash]O) species, which receives a water nucleophilic attack to form the O-O bond. The latter has activation energies slightly higher than those computed for the Co-POMs, in good agreement with experimental observations. These results provide new insights for the accurate understanding of the structure-reactivity relationships of polyoxometalates in particular, and or metal oxides in general, which are of utmost importance for the development of new bottom-up synthetic approaches to design efficient, robust and non-expensive earth-abundant water oxidation catalysts.

Abstract
In this work, a simple and highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor has been developed for detecting PCB72 based on TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) decorated with BiVO4 nanoparticles (NPs). The BiVO4 NPs-TiO2 NTs composites prepared through a simple hydrothermal method exhibit good visible-light adsorption ability, high PEC response and perfect photo-excited stability. The synthesized composites were explored as the photoactive sensing materials for development of a PEC sensing platform for the first time. Here, Au nanoparticles (NPs) were first deposited the composites, and the anti-PCB72 aptamer molecules were immobilized on the Au NPs-deposited BiVO4 NPs-TiO2 NTs. The developed PEC aptasensor exhibits high sensitivity and specificity for PCB72 with a wide linear range from 1 ng/L to 500 ng/L and a low detection limit of 0.23 ng/L. The application of the aptasensor was evaluated by determining PCB 72 in the environment water samples. Thus, a simple and efficient PEC sensing platform was established for detecting the content of PCBs in the environment.

Abstract
The structurally new, carbon-free pentadecanuclear Fe-containing polyoxometalate, Na21[NaFe15(OH)12(PO4)4(A-α-SiW9O34)4]·85H2O (Na21-Fe15P4(SiW9)4), was synthesized using a facile one-pot, solution-based synthetic approach and systematically characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the title complex is composed of two [Fe4(A-α-SiW9O34)] fragments and two [Fe3.5(A-α-SiW9O34)] fragments stabilized by four PO4 linkers in a tetrameric style with idealized Td point group symmetry. When coupling with (4,4'-ditert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl)-bis(coumarin)-iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate ([Ir(coumarin)2(dtbbpy)][PF6]) photosensitizer and triethanolamine (TEOA) sacrificial electron donor, polyoxoanion Fe15P4(SiW9)4 effectively catalyzed hydrogen production with a minimally optimized TON of 986, which represents, to our knowledge, one of the highest values among known Fe-substituted POM-catalyzed hydrogen production systems. Both a mercury-poisoning test and FT-IR characterizations proved the structural stability of Fe15P4(SiW9)4 catalyst under photocatalytic conditions. The photocatalytic mechanism of the present hydrogen-evolving system was investigated by time-solved luminescence and static emission quenching measurements.

Abstract
Understanding the function of surface states on photoanodes is crucial for unraveling the underlying reaction mechanisms of water oxidation. For hematite photoanodes, only one type of surface states with higher oxidative energy (S1) has been proposed and verified as reaction intermediate, while the other surface state located at lower potentials (S2) was assigned to inactive or recombination sites. Through employing rate law analyses and systematical (photo)electrochemical characterizations, here we show that S2 is an active reaction intermediate for water oxidation as well. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the reaction kinetics and dynamic interactions of both S1 and S2 depend significantly on operational parameters, such as illumination intensity, nature of the electrolyte, and applied potential. These insights into the individual reaction kinetics and the interplay of both surface states are decisive for designing efficient photoanodes.

Abstract
The development of new dual functional photocatalysts is highly desirable for conversion and storage of solar energy. Herein, we first constructed hierarchical structure MIL-100(Fe)@BiVO4 in situ growing MIL-100(Fe) nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of decahedron BiVO4 under mild hydrothermal conditions. The as-synthesized hybrid nanostructure is unambiguously determined using a series of characterization methods. These results demonstrate that the ultra-tiny MOF MIL-100(Fe) particles are immobilized on the surface of decahedron BiVO4 and the composite exhibits a strong interaction between BiVO4 and MIL-100(Fe). This hybrid material MIL-100(Fe)@BiVO4 is employed as a photocatalyst for water oxidation reaction and demonstrates higher O2 production activity in comparison with bare BiVO4. The best performance obtained at the optimal mass percentage of MIL-100(Fe) (8.0 wt %) reaches 333.3 μmol h-1 g-1 of the O2 evolution rate irradiated with visible light, which is almost 4.3 times higher than bare BiVO4 (77.3 μmol h-1 g-1). The enhanced water oxidation performance is due to the more efficient interfacial electron-hole transfer between MIL-100(Fe) and BiVO4, which is verified by the results of various photo-electrochemical characterizations. Moreover, the as-prepared composite MIL-100(Fe)@BiVO4 also displays excellent stability for visible-light-driven water oxidation. This study affords a rational strategy for the controllable construction by loading metal-organic frameworks on a semiconductor surface, which is a good reference for other artificial photosystems.

Abstract
While loading of cocatalysts is one of the most widely investigated strategies to promote the efficiency of photoelectrodes, the understanding of their functionality remains controversial. We established new hybrid molecular photoanodes with cobalt-based molecular cubane cocatalysts on hematite as a model system. Photoelectrochemical and rate law analyses revealed an interesting functionality transition of the {Co(II)4O4}-type cocatalysts. Their role changed from predominant hole reservoirs to catalytic centers upon modulation of the applied bias. Kinetic analysis of the photoelectrochemical processes indicated that this observed transition arises from the dynamic equilibria of photogenerated surface charge carriers. Most importantly, we confirmed this functional transition of the cocatalysts and the related kinetic properties for several cobalt-based molecular and heterogeneous catalysts, indicating wide applicability of the derived trends. Additionally, complementary analytical characterizations show that a transformation of the applied molecular species occurs at higher applied bias, pointing to a dynamic interplay connecting molecular and heterogeneous catalysis. Our insights promote the essential understanding of efficient (molecular) cocatalyzed photoelectrode systems to design tailor-made hybrid devices for a wide range of catalytic applications.

Abstract
The development of efficient and stable catalyst systems using low-cost, abundant, and nontoxic materials is the primary demand for photocatalytic water oxidation. Distinguishing the true active species in a heterogeneous catalytic system is important for construction of efficient catalytic systems. Herein, hydrothermally synthesized Ti3+ self-doped TiO2, labeled as Ti3+/TiO2, was first used as a light absorber in a powder visible light-driven photocatalytic water oxidation reaction. When an iron-containing polyoxometalate Na27[Fe11(H2O)14(OH)2(W3O10)2(α-SbW9O33)6] (Fe11) was used as a cocatalyst, an amorphous layer of active species was wrapped outside the initial Ti3+/TiO2 nanorod and the in situ formed composite was labeled as F/Ti3+/TiO2. When the composite F/Ti3+/TiO2 was tested as a photocatalytic water oxidation catalyst, dramatically improved oxygen evolution performance was achieved. The composite F/Ti3+/TiO2 showed an oxygen evolution rate of 410 μmol/g/h, which was about 11-fold higher than that of prism Ti3+/TiO2. After 24 h of illumination, an O2 yield of 36.4% was achieved. The contrast experiments, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization demonstrated that FeO x is the true cocatalyst that enhanced the oxygen evolution activity of TiO2. A recycling experiment proved that the composite F/Ti3+/TiO2 has favorable stability in the oxygen production process.

Abstract
A series of heterostructure NiFe LDH/N-rGO/g-C3N4 nanocomposite were fabricated by combining calcinations-electrostatic self-assembly and hydrothermal steps. In this method, negatively charged N-rGO was electrostaticaly bonded to the self-assembled interface of n-n type g-C3N4/NiFe LDH hybrid. XRD and AFM results revealed successful formation of heterostructure nanocomposite due to the coupling effect of exfoliated NiFe LDH nanosheets with N-rGO and g-C3N4. Among the as synthesized heterostructure, CNNG3LDH performed superior photocatalytic activities towards 95 and 72% mineralization of RhB and phenol. Furthermore, CNNG3LDH could achieve the highest photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 2508 μmolg-12h-1 and O2 evolution rate of 1280 μmolg-12h-1 under visible light irradiation. The CNNG3LDH possess lowest PL intensity, reduced arc of the Nyquist plot (43.8 Ώ) and highest photocurrent density (-0.97 mA cm-2) which revealed effective charge separation for superior photocatalytic activities. TRPL spectral results reveal the synergistic effect of layered component in CNNG3LDH for achievable higher life time of excitons of ~16.52 ns. In addition, N-rGO mediator based Z-scheme charge transfer mechanisms in CNNG3LDH were verified by the ESR and TA-PL studies. Enriched oxygen vacancy type defects in NiFe LDH and N-rGO mediated Z-scheme charge transfer mechanistic path strongly manifest the superior photocatalytic activities of the heterostructure materials.

Abstract
A metal-organic framework (MOF)-modified bismuth vanadate (BiVO4 ) photoanode is fabricated by an ultrathin sheet-induced growth strategy, where ultrathin cobalt oxide sheets act as a metal source for the in situ synthesis of Co-based MOF poly[Co2 (benzimidazole)4 ] (denoted [Co2 (bim)4 ]) nanoparticles on the surface of BiVO4 . [Co2 (bim)4 ] with small particle size and high dispersion can serve as a promising cocatalyst to accept holes transferred from BiVO4 and boost surface reaction kinetics for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. The photocurrent density of a [Co2 (bim)4 ]-modified BiVO4 photoanode can achieve 3.1 mA cm-2 under AM 1.5G illumination at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is better than those of pristine and cobalt-based inorganic materials-modified BiVO4 photoanodes. [Co2 (bim)4 ], with porosity and abundant metal sites, exhibits a high surface charge-separation efficiency (83 % at 1.2 V versus RHE), leading to the enhanced PEC activity. This work will bring new insight into the development of MOF materials as competent cocatalysts for PEC water splitting applications.
