Pd nanoparticles immobilized on the poly-dopamine decorated halloysite nanotubes hybridized with N-doped porous carbon monolayer: A versatile catalyst for promoting Pd catalyzed reactions

Facile Cu-MOF-derived Co3O4 mesoporous-structure as a cooperative catalyst for the reduction nitroarenes and dyes

The present study describes the environmentally friendly and cost-effective synthesis of magnetic, mesoporous structure-Co3O4 nanoparticles (m-Co3O4) utilizing almond peel as a biotemplate. This straightforward method yields a material with high surface area, as confirmed by various characterization techniques. Subsequently, the utilization of m-Co3O4, graphene oxide (GO), Cu(II)acetate (Cu), and asparagine enabled the successful synthesis of a novel magnetic MOF, namely GO-Cu-ASP-m-Co3O4 MOF. This catalyst revealed remarkable stability that could be easily recovered using a magnet for consecutive use without any significant decline in activity for eight cycles in nitro compound reduction and organic dye degradation reactions. Consequently, GO-Cu-ASP-m-Co3O4 MOF holds immense potential as a catalyst for reduction reactions, particularly in the production of valuable amines with high industrial value, as well as for the elimination of toxic-water pollutants such as organic dyes.

Reusable and self-sterilization mask for real-time personal protection based on sunlight-driven photocatalytic reaction

Personal protective masks play critical role in preventing the disease epidemic and resisting pathogenic bacterial infestation. However, large quantities of masks were disposed during COVID-19 epidemic, which caused environmental problem and huge economic burden. Herein, we developed reusable masks with inherent antimicrobial and self-cleaning features under solar irradiation. With spun-bonded nonwoven fabrics (SNF) layer as substrate, copper sulfide@polydopamine nanoparticles are deposited on SNF layer (CuS@PDANPs-SNF), which presents excellent photocatalytic activity. Under solar irradiation, CuS@PDANPs produce abundant of singly linear oxygen (1O2), which inactivates pathogenic bacteria with high efficiency over 99%. Interestingly, CuS@PDANPs-SNF cannot cause high temperature to bring any uncomfortable to the person, which is suitable for human to wear in daily life. Such design effectively protect person from the transmission of viral aerosol. Meanwhile, CuS@PDANPs-SNF masks are reusable and still maintain robust bactericidal ability after washing. The sunlight-mediated self-sterilization at low temperature endows CuS@PDANPs-SNF masks as powerful personal protective equipment for daily protection, which also provides an instructive way for reducing the environmental impact.

Efficient oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides catalyzed by heterogeneous Zr-containing polyoxometalate grafted on graphene oxide

In this study, a tri-component composite named Zr/SiW12/GO was meticulously prepared through an ultrasonic-assisted method. This composite incorporates zirconium nanoparticles (Lewis acid), a negatively charged Keggin type polyoxometalate, and graphene oxide, and serves as a remarkable heterogeneous catalyst. The Keggin component plays multiple roles as reducing, encapsulating, and bridging agents, resulting in a cooperative effect among the three components that significantly enhances the catalytic activity. The catalytic performance of Zr/SiW12/GO was thoroughly investigated in the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under mild conditions, employing H2O2 as the oxidant. Remarkably, this composite exhibited exceptional stability and could be effortlessly recovered and reused up to four times without any noticeable loss in its catalytic activity.

TiO2-Modified Montmorillonite-Supported Porous Carbon-Immobilized Pd Species Nanocomposite as an Efficient Catalyst for Sonogashira Reactions

In this study, a combination of the porous carbon (PCN), montmorillonite (MMT), and TiO₂ was synthesized into a composite immobilized Pd metal catalyst (TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd) with effective synergism improvements in catalytic performance. The successful TiO₂-pillaring modification for MMT, derivation of carbon from the biopolymer of chitosan, and immobilization of Pd species for the prepared TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd⁰ nanocomposites were confirmed using a combined characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the combination of PCN, MMT, and TiO₂ as a composite support for the stabilization of the Pd catalysts could synergistically improve the adsorption and catalytic properties. The resultant TiO₂-MMT₈₀/PCN₂₀@Pd⁰ showed a high surface area of 108.9 m²/g. Furthermore, it exhibited moderate to excellent activity (59-99% yield) and high stability (recyclable 19 times) in the liquid-solid catalytic reactions, such as the Sonogashira reactions of aryl halides (I, Br) with terminal alkynes in organic solutions. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) characterization sensitively detected the development of sub-nanoscale microdefects in the catalyst after long-term recycling service. This study provided direct evidence for the formation of some larger-sized microdefects during sequential recycling, which would act as leaching channels for loaded molecules, including active Pd species.

Ionic liquid-loaded triazine-based magnetic nanoparticles for promoting multicomponent reaction

A novel hybrid magnetic ionic-liquid as a heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized by hybridization of imidazolium based-ionic liquid onto the nitrogen rich magnetic nanocomposite. The resulting catalyst (n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA-SO₃H IL) has two advantages besides recyclability: (i) high capacity of functional-SO₃H group with imidazolium-IL cation for promoting symmetric and asymmetric Hantzsch reaction and (ii) easy recovery. Caused by the polymeric and magnetic nature of the n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA-SO₃H IL, large quantities of acidic groups were bound to the n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA surface, which reduced the catalyst mass applied to the catalytic reaction. Moreover, superior catalytic performance and outstanding recyclability of n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA-SO₃H IL in mild condition make this method a green pathway for manufacture of satisfactory chemicals.

Direction of theoretical and experimental investigation into the mechanism of n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag as a bio-based heterogeneous catalyst in the reduction reactions

In the present study, a natural-based heterogeneous catalyst is synthesized. For this purpose, nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) is prepared, silica-modified and functionalized with phthalimide. Finally, Ag²⁺ was immobilized onto n-HA/Si-PA-SC and reduced to Ag nanoparticles by Bellis perennis flowers extract. n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag characterized by TGA, FTIR, SEM/EDX, XRD, TEM, BET and ICP-AES techniques. Moreover, metal-ligand interactions in n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag complex models were assessed to make a quantitative representation for the immobilization behavior of Ag NPs on the surface of n-HA/Si-PA-SC through quantum chemistry computations. Furthermore, the performance of n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag was studied in the nitroarene, methylene blue and congo red reductions. Finally, the recyclability study as well as Ag-leaching verified that, n-HA/Si-PA-SC@Ag was stable and reused-up to four times without losing its activity.

Keratin/alginate hybrid hydrogels filled with halloysite clay nanotubes for protective treatment of human hair

Keratin/alginate hydrogels filled with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have been tested for the protective coating of human hair. Preliminary studies have been conducted on the aqueous colloidal systems and the corresponding hydrogels obtained by using Ca²⁺ ions as crosslinkers. Firstly, we have investigated the colloidal properties of keratin/alginate/HNTs dispersions to explore the specific interactions occurring between the biomacromolecules and the nanotubes. Then, the rheological properties of the hydrogels have been studied highlighting that the keratin/alginate interactions and the subsequent addition of HNTs facilitate the biopolymer crosslinking. Finally, human hair samples have been treated with the hydrogel systems by the dipping procedure. The protection efficiency of the hydrogels has been evaluated by studying the tensile properties of hair fibers exposed to UV irradiation. In conclusion, keratin/alginate hydrogel filled with halloysite represents a promising formulation for hair protective treatments due to the peculiar structural and rheological characteristics.

Incorporating heterogeneous lacunary Keggin anions as efficient catalysts for solvent-free cyanosilylation of aldehydes and ketones

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as efficient catalysts can be used a wide range of chemical transformations due to their tunable Brønsted/Lewis-acidity and redox properties. Herein, we reported two hybrid and heterogeneous lacunary Keggin catalysts: (TBA)₇[PW₁₁O₃₉] (TBA-PW₁₁) and (TBA)₈[SiW₁₁O₃₉]·4H₂O (TBA-SiW₁₁) (TBA⁺: tetrabutylammonium) in which [XW₁₁O₃₉]ⁿ⁻ anions were coated by TBA⁺ cations. In this form, TBA⁺ can easily trap reactants on the surface of the catalysts and increase the catalytic reaction. Therefore, the catalytic performance of both POMs was tested in cyanosilylation of numerous compounds bearing-carbonyl group and trimethylsilyl cyanide under solvent-free conditions. TBA-PW₁₁ is more effective than TBA-SiW₁₁, conceivably due to the higher Lewis acidity of the P than the Si center and to the higher accessibility of the metal centers in the framework structure. Noteworthy, the recyclability and heterogeneity of both POMs catalysts were also examined, and the results confirmed that they remain active at least after three recycling procedures.

Development of High-Efficiency, Magnetically Separable Palladium-Decorated Manganese-Ferrite Catalyst for Nitrobenzene Hydrogenation

Aniline (AN) is one of the most important compounds in the chemical industry and is prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB). The development of novel, multifunctional catalysts which are easily recoverable from the reaction mixture is, therefore, of paramount importance. Compared to conventional filtration, magnetic separation is favored because it is cheaper and more facile. For satisfying these requirements, we developed manganese ferrite (MnFe₂O₄)–supported, magnetically separable palladium catalysts with high catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline. In addition to high NB conversion and AN yield, remarkable aniline selectivity (above 96 n/n%) was achieved. Surprisingly, the magnetic support alone also shows moderate catalytic activity even without noble metals, and thus, up to 94 n/n% nitrobenzene conversion, along with 47 n/n% aniline yield, are attainable. After adding palladium nanoparticles to the support, the combined catalytic activity of the two nanomaterials yielded a fast, efficient, and highly selective catalyst. During the test of the Pd/MnFe₂O₄ catalyst in NB hydrogenation, no by-products were detected, and consequently, above 96 n/n% aniline yield and 96 n/n% selectivity were achieved. The activity of the Pd/MnFe₂O₄ catalyst was not particularly sensitive to the hydrogenation temperature, and reuse tests indicate its applicability in at least four cycles without regeneration. The remarkable catalytic activity and other favorable properties can make our catalyst potentially applicable to both NB hydrogenation and other similar or slightly different reactions.

Pd on thermo-responsive composite of silica-coated carbon nanotube and 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium-based ionic liquid copolymers as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenation of nitro compounds

In this work, an ionic liquid-containing thermo-responsive heterogeneous catalyst with utility for promoting hydrogenation of nitro-compounds in aqueous media is developed. To prepare the catalyst, silica-coated carbon nanotubes were synthesized and vinyl-functionalized. The resulted compound was then polymerized with 1-viny-3-butylimidazolium bromide and N-isopropylacrylamide. The obtained ionic liquid-containing thermo-responsive composite was palladated via wet-impregnation method to give the final catalyst. Study of the performance of the catalyst confirmed high catalytic activity of the catalyst at temperature above the lower critical solution temperature. Furthermore, the catalyst was highly recyclable and showed negligible Pd leaching upon recycling. Broad substrate scope and selectivity of the catalyst towards reduction of nitro functionality were also confirmed. Furthermore, hot filtration test implied the heterogeneous nature of the catalysis. The comparison of the activity of Pd/CNT-P with some control catalysts approved the importance of hybridization of P and CNT and the presence of ionic liquid for the catalytic activity.

Polydopamine-treated hierarchical cellulosic fibers as versatile reinforcement of polybutylene succinate biocomposites for electromagnetic shielding

There is a need for scalable technologies to reduce electromagnetic pollution with materials of low density and low carbon footprint. Unfortunately, environmental adaptability, economic feasibility and lightweight are factors that are still far from optimal in most electromagnetic shielding materials. Herein, we address these challenges with polybutylene succinate (PBS) reinforced with bamboo fibers functionalized with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄-NPs) and polypyrrole (PPy). Such hybrid system was compatibilized via polydopamine (PDA) coupling, demonstrating magnetic, dielectric and interfacial polarization losses as well as distributed reflection, yielding a shielding effectiveness of ~36.9 dB. Simultaneously, the composite displayed gains in tensile strength and modulus (by 18 and 38%, respectively) combined with improved flexural strength and modulus (by 33% and 15%, respectively). Overall, this work demonstrates a new pathway toward low cost and lightweight bio-based materials for high-performance electromagnetic shielding.

Site-specific halloysite functionalization by polydopamine: A new synthetic route for potential near infrared-activated delivery system

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) represent a versatile core structure for the design of functional nanosystems of biomedical interest. However, the development of selective methodologies for the site-controlled functionalization of the nanotubes at specific sites is not an easy task. This study aims to accomplish a procedure for the site-selective/specific, "pin-point", functionalization of HNTs with polydopamine (HNTs@PDA). This goal was achieved, at pH 6.5, by exploiting the basicity of ZnO nanoparticles anchored on the HNTs external surface (HNTs@ZnO) to induce a punctual polydopamine polymerization and coating. The morphology and the chemical composition of the nanomaterial was demonstrated by several techniques. Turbidimetric analysis showed that PDA coating affected the aqueous stability of HNTs@PDA compared to both HNTs@ZnO and HNTs. Notably, hyperthermia studies revealed that the nanomaterial induced a local thermic rise, up to 50 °C, under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Furthermore, secondary functionalization of HNTs@PDA by selective grafting of biotin onto the PDA coating followed by avidin binding was also accomplished.

Specific sensing of resorcin based on the hierarchical porous nanoprobes constructed by cuttlefish-derived biomaterials through differential pulse voltammetry

The specific detection of resorcin from its isomers is a current research hotspot. Thus in our work, a ternary hierarchical porous nanoprobe has been constructed based on the combination of cuttlefish ink and bimetallic Au@Ag nanoclusters for the specific sensing of resorcin. Briefly, through electrostatic interaction, Au@Ag core-shell nanoclusters are immobilized on the surface of polydopamine extracted from cuttlefish, which is turned into nitrogen-doped porous carbon functionalized by bimetallic Au@Ag by topological transformation subsequently. Afterward, an electrochemical sensor is fabricated based on the nanoprobes for specifically determining resorcin in solution by differential pulse voltammetry, and the linear detection ranges of the sensor are 1-100 μM and 1.2-4 mM while the detection limit reaches 0.06 μM. Meanwhile, the sensing mechanism of resorcin by the pre-fabricated sensor is detailedly studied by density functional theory to obtain a clear electrochemical process. Besides, the selectivity, stability, plus reproducibility of the pre-fabricated sensor have been also tested, and the determinations for resorcin in real environmental water samples have also been performed with good recoveries, revealing the auspicious application potential in the environmental monitoring.

Magnetic composite of γ-Fe2O3 hollow sphere and palladium doped nitrogen-rich mesoporous carbon as a recoverable catalyst for C-C coupling reactions

In this article, palladated-magnetic nitrogen doped porous carbon was prepared from nano magnetic γ-Fe2O3 hollow sphere (h-Fe2O3) with high specific surface area and pore volume. To the purpose, initially h-Fe2O3 was prepared and covered with glucose via hydrothermal treatment with subsequent polymerization of organic shell. The polymerization of melamine-resorcinol-formaldehyde (MRF) was achieved in the presence of Cl-functionalized glucose coated h-Fe2O3 (h-Fe2O3@glu-MRF). Next, the prepared magnetic core-shell hollow sphere was palladated followed by carbonization to yield Pd@h-Fe2O3@C introducing more pores in its structure. The resulted compound, Pd@h-Fe2O3@C, was fully characterized, showing that carbonization process expressively increased the specific surface area. The resulted Pd@h-Fe2O3@C was successfully used for promoting C-C coupling reactions under mild reaction conditions as a heterogeneous catalyst and its activity was compared with some prepared control catalysts. This novel catalyst was magnetically separated simply by a magnet bar and recycled and reused at least in five consecutive runs, without considerable loss of its activity. It is note mentioning that, high recyclability with low Pd leaching are another gains of this protocol.

Recent advances in metal-free heteroatom-doped carbon heterogonous catalysts

The development of cost-effective, efficient, and novel catalytic systems is always an important topic for heterogeneous catalysis from academia and industrial points of view. Heteroatom-doped carbon materials have gained more and more attention as effective heterogeneous catalysts to replace metal-based catalysts, because of their excellent physicochemical properties, outstanding structure characteristics, environmental compatibility, low cost, inexhaustible resources, and low energy consumption. Doping of heteroatoms can tailor the properties of carbons for different utilizations of interest. In comparison to pure carbon catalysts, these catalysts demonstrate superior catalytic activity in many organic reactions. This review highlights the most recent progress in synthetic strategies to fabricate metal-free heteroatom-doped carbon catalysts including single and multiple heteroatom-doped carbons and the catalytic applications of these fascinating materials in various organic transformations such as oxidation, hydrogenation, hydrochlorination, dehydrogenation, etc.

In situ decoration of Au NPs over polydopamine encapsulated GO/Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a recyclable nanocatalyst for the reduction of nitroarenes

A new and efficient catalyst has been designed and prepared via in situ immobilization of Au NPs fabricated polydopamine (PDA)-shelled Fe3O4 nanoparticle anchored over graphene oxide (GO) (GO/Fe3O4@PDA/Au). This novel, architecturally interesting magnetic nanocomposite was fully characterized using different analytical techniques such as Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, elemental mapping, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Electron Spectroscopy. Catalytic activity of this material was successfully explored in the reduction of nitroarenes to their corresponding substituted anilines, using NaBH4 as reducing agent at ambient conditions. The most significant merits for this protocol were smooth and clean catalysis at room temperature with excellent productivity, sustainable conditions, ease of separation of catalyst from the reaction mixture by using a magnetic bar and most importantly reusability of the catalyst at least 8 times without any pre-activation, minimum loss of activity and considerable leaching.

Composite of MOF and chitin as an efficient catalyst for photodegradation of organic dyes

A novel composite has been fabricated by using MOF and chitin as a natural and biocompatible compound. To this purpose, MOF was synthesized by using 2-aminoterephthalic acid and iron (III) chloride hexahydrate and then reacted with Cl-functionalized chitin. The resulting composite was characterized and utilized as a catalyst for degradation of methylene blue both in dark condition and under visible light irradiation. The results indicated superior catalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, study of the reaction variables, including basicity, dye concentration and catalyst loading showed that the highest catalytic activity was achieved at basic condition. It was also found that both initial dye concentration and catalyst loading can affect the catalytic activity. To disclose the merits of the composite compared to its individual components, kinetic studies of the photo-degradation process in the presence of the composite, chitin and MOF have been performed. The results confirmed superior activity the composite compared to its components. The study of the mechanism of the reaction using scavengers confirmed that the created holes (h⁺) are the most effective species in the process of photocatalytic degradation of MB. Notably, the catalyst was recyclable and could be used for degradation of other dyes.

Transformation of Corn Lignin into Sun Cream Ingredients

Production of value-added chemicals from lignocellulose is one of the key strands of the emerging bio-economy. A synthetic approach has been developed to produce p-methoxy coumarate esters from waste corn stover and corn bran, and further transform these compounds into consumer products. In the first step, p-coumaric acid (pCA) and ferulic acid (FA) are released through mild alkaline hydrolysis of corn waste, in more than 20 mg g^-1 yield (10 wt % based on lignin content). Subsequently, heterogeneous solid acids catalyze the esterification of pCA with various alcohols. Amberlite IR-15 shows the best catalytic performance, owing to its optimal acid density, large surface area, and suitable pore diameter. The solid acid catalyst can be recycled with slight activity loss and regenerated by acid washing and vacuum drying. Finally, methylation of p-coumarate ester to give target product p-methoxy coumarate esters is carried out by using commercially available and low-cost inorganic bases (e. g., K₂ CO₃ ). Base-catalyzed transesterification of methyl p-methoxy coumarate to p-methoxy coumarate esters is also investigated.

Pd NPs supported on halloysite functionalized with Schiff base as an efficient catalyst for Sonogashira reaction

A hybrid system was designed and synthesized through reacting modified halloysite (Hal-Cl) with Schiff base (DAB-PC) and applied as catalytic support for anchoring Pd NPs to afford Pd@Hal-DAB-PC catalyst. The resultant material was well identified by various analyses including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and revealed outstanding catalytic activity in the Sonogashira reaction in aqueous media. Also, This nanocatalyst was simply collected and recycled up to six runs with a slight drop in efficiency, indicating the durability of Pd@Hal-DAB-PC.

Copper-free Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions: an overview

The Sonogashira reaction is a cross-coupling reaction of a vinyl or aryl halide with a terminal alkyne to form a C-C bond. In its original form, the Sonogashira reaction is performed with a palladium species as a catalyst while co-catalyzed by a copper species and a phosphine or amine. The reaction is conducted under mild conditions, i.e., room temperature, aqueous solutions, and the presence of mild bases. Undeniably, the Sonogashira reaction is among the most competent and efficient reactions widely used in organic synthesis. This named reaction has proved useful in many organic synthesis areas, including the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, heterocycles, natural products, organic compounds, complex molecules having biological activities, nanomaterials, and many more materials that we use in our daily lives. The presence of transition metals as a catalyst was indeed essential in the Sonogashira reaction. However, recently, the reaction has been successfully conducted without copper as a co-catalyst and phosphines or amines as bases. In this critical review, we have focused on developments in the Sonogashira reaction successfully performed in the absence of copper complexes, phosphines or amines, which could be of particular advantage in implementing green chemistry principles and making the reactions more achievable from an economic viewpoint.

Pd Nanoparticles-Loaded Vinyl Polymer Gels: Preparation, Structure and Catalysis

Four vinyl polymer gels (VPGs) were synthesized by free radical polymerization of divinylbenzene, ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate, and copolymerization of divinylbenzene with styrene, and ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate with methyl methacrylate, as supports for palladium nanoparticles. VPGs obtained from divinylbenzene and from divinylbenzene with styrene had spherical shapes while those obtained from ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate and from ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate with methyl methacrylate did not have any specific shapes. Pd(OAc)2 was impregnated onto VPGs and reduced to form Pd0 nanoparticles within VPGs. The structures of Pd0-loaded VPGs were analyzed by XRD, TEM, and nitrogen gas adsorption. Pd0-loaded VPGs had nanocrystals of Pd0 within and on the surface of the polymeric supports. Pd0/VPGs efficiently catalyzed the oxidation/disproportionation of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde/toluene, where activity and selectivity between benzaldehyde and toluene varied, depending on the structure of VPG and the weight percentage loading of Pd0. The catalysts were stable and Pd leaching to liquid phase did not occur. The catalysts were separated and reused for five times without any significant decrease in the catalytic activity.

Metal Chlorides Grafted on SAPO-5 (MClx/SAPO-5) as Reusable and Superior Catalysts for Acylation of 2-Methylfuran Under Non-Microwave Instant Heating Condition

Highly active metal chlorides grafted on silicoaluminophosphate number 5, MClx/SAPO-5 (M = Cu, Co, Sn, Fe and Zn) catalysts via simple grafting of respective metal chlorides (MClx) onto SAPO-5 are reported. The study shows that thermochemical treatment after grafting is essential to ensure the formation of chemical bondings between MClx and SAPO-5. In addition, the microscopy, XRD and nitrogen adsorption analyses reveal the homogeneous distribution of MClx species on the SAPO-5 surface. Furthermore, the elemental microanalysis confirms the formation of Si–O–M covalent bonds in ZnClx/SAPO-5, SnClx/SAPO-5 and FeClx/SAPO-5 whereas only dative bondings are formed in CoClx/SAPO-5 and CuClx/SAPO-5. The acidity of MClx/SAPO-5 is also affected by the type of metal chloride grafted. Thus, their catalytic behavior is evaluated in the acid-catalyzed acylation of 2-methylfuran under novel non-microwave instant heating conditions (90–110 °C, 0–20 min). ZnClx/SAPO-5, which has the largest amount of acidity (mainly Lewis acid sites), exhibits the best catalytic performance (94.5% conversion, 100% selective to 2-acetyl-5-methylfuran) among the MClx/SAPO-5 solids. Furthermore, the MClx/SAPO-5 solids, particularly SnClx/SAPO-5, FeClx/SAPO-5 and ZnClx/SAPO-5, also show more superior catalytic performance than common homogeneous acid catalysts (H2SO4, HNO3, CH3COOH, FeCl3, ZnCl2) with higher reactant conversion and catalyst reusability, thus offering a promising alternative for the replacement of hazardous homogeneous catalysts in Friedel–Crafts reactions.

Highly Active Hydrogenation Catalysts Based on Pd Nanoparticles Dispersed along Hierarchical Porous Silica Covered with Polydopamine as Interfacial Glue

New catalysts based on Pd(0) nanoparticles (Pd NPs) on a bimodal porous silica of the UVM-7/polydopamine (PDA) support have been synthesized following two preparative strategies based on the sequential or joint incorporation of two components of the composite (Pd and PDA). We analyzed the role played by the PDA as ‘interfacial glue’ between the silica scaffold and the Pd NPs. The catalysts were tested for the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol using (NEt4)BH4 as the hydrogenating agent. In addition to the palladium content, the characterization of the catalysts at the micro and nanoscale has highlighted the importance of different parameters, such as the size and dispersion of the Pd NPs, as well as their accessibility to the substrate (greater or lesser depending on their entrapment level in the PDA) on the catalytic efficiency. Staged sequential synthesis has led to better catalytic results. The most active Pd(0) centers seem to be Pd NPs of less than 1 nm on the PDA surface. The efficiency of the catalysts obtained is superior to that of similar materials without PDA. A comprehensive comparison has been made with other catalysts based on Pd NPs in a wide variety of supports. The TOF values achieved are among the best described in the literature.

Green synthesis of Ag NPs on magnetic polyallylamine decorated g-C3N4 by Heracleum persicum extract: efficient catalyst for reduction of dyes

Silver nanoparticles were immobilized on magnetic polyallylamine (PAA) decorated g-C₃N₄ by using Heracleum persicum extract as a biological reducing and stabilizing agent. The resulting nanocomposite, Fe₃O₄-g-C₃N₄-TCT-PAA-Ag, was then characterized using BET, VSM, XRD, TGA, FTIR, TEM, EDS and ICP. The catalytic performance of the synthesized nanocatalyst was considered in the reduction of rhodamine B, and methyl orange in the presence of sodium borohydride in the aqueous medium at room temperature. The results showed that Fe₃O₄-g-C₃N₄-TCT-PAA-Ag nanocomposite could promote both reduction reactions efficiently in very short reaction times (70-100 s). In addition, Fe₃O₄-g-C₃N₄-TCT-PAA-Ag could be magnetically recovered and recycled for several cycles with no significant decrease in its catalytic performance. Using the experimental results, the rate constant, enthalpy, and entropy of the reduction reactions of both dyes were estimated.
