Abstract
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by the production of thick and viscous mucus progressively affecting various organs and systems, with recurrent respiratory infections. The aim of this study was to learn about the oral health characteristics in CF patients. METHODOLOGY Data, such as sociodemographic, general and oral health, were collected from the medical records of CF patients aged 0 to 18 years old. The number of patients with tooth decay, prevalence of developmental defects of enamel (DDE), classification of dental occlusion, sialometry, salivary pH and oral microbial profile and respiratory secretions evaluations were recorded. RESULTS Most patients had pancreatic insufficiency (84.2%), malnutrition (60%), respiratory problems (75.4%) and genotyping of the F508del (66.7%). Regarding the medications used, 96.5% used vitamins and electrolyte replacement, 84,02% used pancreatic enzymes, 64.9% used dornase alfa and 47% were using antibiotics. The percentage of patients with tooth decay was 19.3%, 47% had DDE, low salivary flow and basic salivary pH. The most prevalent microorganisms found on tongue biofilm and respiratory secretions were SA and PA. There was a positive association between the presence of bacteria and fungi found on both the tongue and respiratory secretions. The presence of fungi on the tongue biofilm was significantly associated with the use of antibiotics. CONCLUSIONS These findings underscore the importance of dentists focusing on prevention and on the specific needs of the patient as well.

Abstract
The oral cavity contains a site-specific microbiota that interacts with host cells to regulate many physiological processes in the human body. Emerging evidence has suggested that changes in the oral microbiota can increase the risk of lung cancer (LC), and the oral microbiota is also altered in patients with LC. Human and animal studies have shown that oral microecological disorders and/or specific oral bacteria may play an active role in the occurrence and development of LC through direct and/or indirect mechanisms. These studies support the potential of oral microbiota in the clinical treatment of LC. Oral microbiota may therefore be used in the prevention and treatment of LC and to improve the side effects of anticancer therapy by regulating the balance of the oral microbiome. Specific oral microbiota in LC may also be used as screening or predictive biomarkers. This review summarizes the main findings in research on oral microbiome-related LC and discusses current challenges and future research directions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scales are now widely used in children with cystic fibrosis (cwCF) which reflects the course of the disease. In this cross-sectional study, our primary aim was to compare the Pediatric Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (POQL) and Oral Health Score (OHS) between cwCF and healthy group. Our secondary aim was to evaluate the association between Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) colonization, pulmonary function test, OHS and POQL in cwCF. METHODS The study population (age ranging 6-14) included 55 cwCF followed at the Marmara University Division of Pediatric Pulmonology compared with 50 healthy peers. A survey consisted of general questions (age, sex, etc.) and the POQL instrument were filled by parents. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth for both primary (dft) and permanent dentition (DMFT) was detected according to WHO criteria. Data like current body mass index (BMI z score), colonization status with PA, predicted value for forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1pp), and any hospitalizations during the previous year were obtained from their medical. Differences between the groups were evaluated using Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test with a significance level set at 0.05. RESULTS There was no significant difference between PA-colonized cwCF and healthy controls in DMFT (p = 0.916). For all domains of POQL (emotional function, social function, role function), scores of cwCF were significantly better than healthy controls (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between all domains of POQL scores in PA colonized and non-PA colonized cwCF' POQL scores (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Although POQL scores of cwCF were encouraging, dental caries prevention and regular follow-ups should be taken into consideration.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the caries status of the Cystic fibrosis (CF) children and adolescents with the comparation of some biochemical markers, secretory-immunoglobulin-A (sIgA), and antimicrobial peptides in the saliva. METHODS In this cross-sectional descriptive study, the approval Ethics Board was obtained. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected from CF and healthy control children (non-CF) patients. Both groups underwent the same dental and periodontal evaluation scheme of the assessment. Human beta defensin (HBD1), human alpha defensin (HNP-1), cathelicidin (LL-37), sIgA in saliva were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunoassay method. A general biochemical analysis was performed. Statistical analysis was performed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Version 20.0 (SPSS Inc.). RESULTS A total of 21 (9 male, 12 female) CF and 23 (11 male, 12 female) control patients were participated with the mean age of 10.17 ± 3.38 and 9.52 ± 2.15 years, respectively. In control children, DMFT/S (decayed-missing-filled-tooth/surface-in-permanent-dentition), dmft/s (decayed-missing-filled-tooth/surface-in-primary-dentition) values were higher; DT (decayed-tooth in permanent dentition), ft (filled-tooth in primary dentition) and plaque index values were statistically significantly higher (p = 0.042, p = 0.005, p = 0.038, respectively) than CF patients. Bicarbonate was higher in control group; sodium, chloride, and total protein were higher in CF group; magnesium, calcium and phosphate levels were similar in each group (p > 0.05). Alpha and beta defensin-1 levels in control group was statistically significantly higher (p = 0.037 and p = 0.020, respectively), while LL37 and sIgA were not statistically significantly higher (p > 0.05) than CF group. CONCLUSIONS Children with CF had lower caries in permanent teeth, filling in primary teeth, and an altered salivary biomarker profile, especially in HNB1, HNP1. Therefore, it is important to conduct periodic oral-dental controls among CF patients during their childhood.

Abstract
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that is caused by a defect in the gene coding for the transmembrane cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Research papers published so far point out that despite the numerous dental treatment needs of CF patients, there are no oral care guidelines for this group of patients. The aim of the article is to propose standards of dental prophylactic and therapeutic procedures for CF patients in different age groups. Regardless of the CF patient's age, dental check-ups should be scheduled at least every 6 months. However, taking into account the actual condition of the individual CF patients, therapeutic visits may be scheduled for earlier dates, to provide well-fitting treatment, considering the level of risk of oral diseases. The described management standards may be helpful and may improve the quality of dental care provided to CF patients.

Abstract
Introduction: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal genetic disease, associated with the production of excessively thick mucosa and with life-threatening chronic lung infections. The microbiota of the oral cavity can act as a reservoir or as a barrier for infectious microorganisms that can colonize the lungs. However, the specific composition of the oral microbiome in CF is poorly understood.Methods: In collaboration with CF associations in Spain, we collected oral rinse samples from 31 CF persons (age range 7-47) and matched controls, and then performed 16S rRNA metabarcoding and high-throughput sequencing, combined with culture and proteomics-based identification of fungi to survey the bacterial and fungal oral microbiome.Results: We found that CF is associated with less diverse oral microbiomes, which were characterized by higher prevalence of Candida albicans and differential abundances of a number of bacterial taxa that have implications in both the connection to lung infections in CF, as well as potential oral health concerns, particularly periodontitis and dental caries.Conclusion: Overall, our study provides a first global snapshot of the oral microbiome in CF. Future studies are required to establish the relationships between the composition of the oral and lung microbiomes in CF.

Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of the study conducted on cystic fibrosis (CF) patients was the bacterial plaque
accumulation and the gingival condition assessment, and microbial analysis of the subgingival
biofilm.
Materials/Methods: The study included 22 CF adult patients and 22 healthy controls, sex and age compatible with
the CF patients. The dental plaque was assessed using plaque index (PLI), and the gingival
status using gingival index (GI). Analyses of the subgingival biofilm were performed by the
real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.
Results: The mean value of GI in CF patients was 0.39 ±0.36 and was significantly lower comparing
to the healthy controls (1.02 ±0.63), PLI was similar in both the groups (1.31 ±0.69) for the
study group and 1.04 ±0.62 for controls). In CF patients there was no correlation between PLI
and GI, which was observed in the control group. In both the groups there was a correlation
between PLI and the total number of periopathogens. Furthermore, in the control group, there
was a correlation between GI and the number of periopathogens. Such a correlation was not
observed in the CF patients.
Conclusions: In patients with CF, the lack of correlation between the amount of tooth deposits and the
gingival condition may indicate a stable, most likely pharmacologically conditioned oral biofilm
ecology. Among the aetiological factors of gingivitis and periodontitis in patients with CF, the
bacterial activity does not seem to be modified. However, the unsatisfactory oral hygiene found
in the study participants does not exclude the possibility of disease development in the future.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a general term for diseases characterised by inflammatory destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, gradual destruction of the marginal periodontal ligament and resorption of alveolar bone. Early-onset periodontitis is due to disturbed neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation and clearance. Indeed, mutations that inactivate the cysteine proteases cathepsin C result in the massive periodontal damage seen in patients with deficient NET formation. In contrast, exaggerated NET formation due to polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) hyper-responsiveness drives the pathology of late-onset periodontitis by damaging and ulcerating the gingival epithelium and retarding epithelial healing. Despite the gingival regeneration, periodontitis progression ends with almost complete loss of the periodontal ligament and subsequent tooth loss. Thus, NETs help to maintain periodontal health, and their dysregulation, either insufficiency or surplus, causes heavy periodontal pathology and edentulism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES People with Cystic Fibrosis (PWCF) may be presumed to be at lower risk of periodontal disease due to long term antibiotic use but this has not been comprehensively investigated. The oral hygiene and periodontal status of PWCF in comparison to the general population is not well established. The objective of this systematic review was to critically evaluate the literature on periodontal and oral hygiene status in PWCF to see if this group are at increased risk of periodontal disease (gingivitis or periodontitis). DATA SOURCES 5 databases were searched: Scopus, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science. STUDY SELECTION The search resulted in 614 publications from databases with one more publication identified by searching bibliographies. 13 studies were included in the qualitative analysis. CONCLUSIONS The majority of studies showed better oral hygiene, with lower levels of gingivitis and plaque among people with Cystic Fibrosis (PWCF) than controls. Interestingly, despite this, many studies showed that PWCF had higher levels of dental calculus. Three studies found there was no difference in Oral Hygiene between PWCF and controls. One study found that PWCF aged between 6 and 9.5 years had increased levels of clinical gingivitis, and one study showed that PWCF with gingivitis had more bleeding on probing than people without CF. The vast majority of PWCF examined were children- only five studies included people over 18 years, and only one looked exclusively at adults. There is a need for further study into the periodontal health of PWCF- particularly those over the age of 18. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE There are currently no guidelines referring to oral care in PWCF. Studies have suggested that the oral cavity acts as a reservoir of bacteria which may colonise the lungs. If PWCF are at increased risk of periodontal disease, they should attend for regular screenings to facilitate early detection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening chronic inflammatory disease in children due to respiratory complications. Saliva could serve as a reservoir of bacterial colonization and potentially reflect systemic inflammation. This study investigated whether salivary triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1), peptidoglycan recognition protein 1 (PGLYRP1), interleukin (IL)-1β, and calprotectin are associated with CF or reflect concomitant gingival inflammation. METHODS Ten CF (aged 3 to 12 years) and 10 systemically healthy (SH) age- and sex-matched children (C) were enrolled in the study. Individuals with CF underwent routine laboratory determinations. Probing depth, gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and bleeding on probing (BOP) were recorded on fully erupted teeth and saliva samples collected. Salivary TREM-1, PGLYRP1, IL-1β, and calprotectin were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Children with CF had significantly higher BOP scores (P = 0.001) and calprotectin levels (P = 0.017) compared with the C group. TREM-1, PGLYRP1, and IL-1β could not distinguish between CF and SH but showed positive correlation with GI, PI, and BOP in both groups. Calprotectin levels positively correlated with procalcitonin (P = 0.014), thrombocyte counts (P = 0.001), mean platelet volume (P = 0.030), and with PGLYRP1 (P = 0.019) and IL-1β (P = 0.013) in CF children. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for calprotectin (CFvsC) showed an area under the curve of 0.79 (95% CI 0.58 to 0.99, P = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS CF children presented with higher gingival inflammation scores and salivary calprotectin levels, that correlated with systemic inflammatory markers. Salivary calprotectin levels were not associated with periodontal parameters. Hence, preliminary data demonstrate that salivary calprotectin might have a chairside diagnostic potential for CF in children.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the periodontal status of cystic fibrosis (CF) adult patients and to evaluate whether there is a correlation between the bacterial population of the subgingival biofilm and the health status of the periodontal tissues in this group of adults. The study involved 22 cystic fibrosis adult patients. The periodontal condition was assessed using Plaque Index (PLI), Gingival Index (GI), and Probing Pocket Depth (PPD). The gingival sulcus samples were analyzed by the Real-Time PCR assay (RT-PCR). Majority of patients showed moderate or severe bacterial dental plaque accumulation, but none of them had clinical symptoms of periodontal diseases. RT-PCR showed the presence of periopathogens in 50% of patients. Red complex microorganisms were detected in 9.09%, orange complex in 27.27%, and green complex in 31.82% of the samples analyzed. In cystic fibrosis patients colonized by periopathogens, the periodontal markers were significantly higher in comparison to not colonized by periopathogens patients. Despite the widespread presence of bacterial dental deposits in the cystic fibrosis adult patients examined, none of them has clinical symptoms of periodontal disease; however, the presence of periodontal pathogens in subgingival biofilm may represent a possible risk factor of this disease in the future. An unsatisfactory level of oral hygiene in any patient with cystic fibrosis indicates a need to focus on standards of dental care for such patients.
