Abstract
Triazine herbicides are commonly used in agriculture to eliminate weeds. However, they can persist in the environment. In this study, we explored a new method for detecting triazine herbicides in aqueous samples. We selected two triazine herbicides, namely, prometryn and ametryn, as model herbicides. To generate magnetic probes, we mixed aqueous Gd3+ with aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), which created magnetic probes made of Gd3+-SDS micelles. These probes showed a trapping capacity for the model herbicides. Results indicated that the trapping capacities of our magnetic probes for ametryn and prometryn were approximately 466 and 468 nmol mg-1, respectively. The dissociation constants of our probes toward ametryn and prometryn were 2.92 × 10-5 and 1.27 × 10-5, respectively. This is the first report that the developed magnetic probes can be used to trap triazine herbicides. For detection, we used carbon fiber ionization mass spectrometry (CFI-MS), which can be used to directly detect semi-volatiles from the samples in the condensed phase. Because of the semi-volatility of triazine herbicides, the herbicides trapped by the magnetic probes can be directly analyzed by CFI-MS without any elution steps. In addition, we also demonstrated the feasibility of using our approach for detecting triazine herbicides in lake water and drinking water.

Abstract
It is essential to monitor organic pollutants to control contamination levels in environmental water bodies. In this respect, the development of new materials based on functionalised polymeric films for the measurement of toxic compounds is of interest. In this study, we prepare new films based on polymer cellulose triacetate modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes for the monitoring of selected compounds: a fungicide (chlorpyrifos) and two emerging contaminants, the musk tonalide and the bactericide triclosan, which are used in the formulation of personal care products. The films, upon contact with water samples and following the principles of thin film microextraction, allow the determination of organic pollutants at low concentration levels. The contact time of the film with a predetermined volume of water is fixed at 60 min, and the compounds are eluted with a small volume (1 mL) of organic solvent for GC-MS analysis. Parameters such as repeatability for different films and detection limits are found to be satisfactory. Applying the method to river water demonstrates its suitability and, in the cases of chlorpyrifos and tonalide, the absence of a significant matrix effect.

Abstract
A magnetic mesoporous molecularly imprinted polymers was synthesized on the surface of magnetic nanoparticles silanized with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate to introduce reactive methacrylate groups. Subsequently, methacrylic acid monomers were grafted onto the surface of this adsorbent functionalized via polymerization by precipitation. Magnetic mesoporous molecularly imprinted polymer was properly characterized by different techniques and applied as adsorbent in magnetic solid phase extraction for selective determination of two organophosphorus pesticides, azamethiphos and chlorpyrifos, in mineral water and grape samples. After sample preparation optimization, recoveries of 99.56% and 98.86% were obtained for azamethiphos and chlorpyrifos, respectively. The magnetic solid phase extraction coupled to HPLC-UV presented limit of quantification of 5 ng mL-1, linearity ranged of 5 to 1000 ng mL-1, in addition to adequate accuracy, precision and robustness. The pesticides showed stability in the matrix and were satisfactorily quantified in real mineral water and grape samples.

Abstract
The current study is focused on the in situ synthesis of a carbon aerogel (CA)-based solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating on stainless steel wire and evaluation of the suitability of CAs as SPME coating materials for the analysis of selected organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) contained in environmental samples. A CA-based coating was obtained by pyrolyzing organic aerogels, which were prepared by the sol-gel polymerization of formaldehyde and 5-methylresorcinol, an oil shale processing by-product. The results demonstrated, for the first time, the in situ synthesis of a CA-based SPME fiber coating on stainless steel wire and its suitability for the extraction and preconcentration of six OPPs. Main parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated and optimized. The direct immersion (DI)-SPME procedure combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the simultaneous analysis of selected OPPs was successfully applied to the efficient and sensitive determination of analytes of interest in environmental matrices of honey and natural water samples. The developed CA-coated SPME fiber showed good linearity (R2 = 0.981-0.994), low detection limits (0.11-0.83 μg L-1) and satisfactory single fiber and fiber-to-fiber reproducibilities (8.8-12.3%, n = 5 and 11.4-17.2%, n = 3). The performance of the CA-coating was compared with that of commercially available SPME fiber coatings.

Abstract
Pesticide residues in food matrices, threatening the survival and development of humanity, is one of the critical challenges worldwide. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess excellent properties, which include excellent adsorption capacity, tailorable shape and size, hierarchical structure, numerous surface-active sites, high specific surface areas, high chemical stabilities, and ease of modification and functionalization. These promising properties render MOFs as advantageous porous materials for the extraction and detection of pesticides in food samples. This review is based on a brief introduction of MOFs and highlights recent advances in pesticide extraction and detection through MOFs. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects in this field are also described.

Abstract
This review intends to integrate the relevant information that is related to pesticide applications in food commodities and will cover three main sections. The first section encompasses some of the guidelines that have been implemented on management of pesticide application worldwide, such as the establishment of a value called Maximum Residue Level (MRL) through the application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) into daily agricultural activities. A brief overview of the methods adopted in quantification of these trace residues in different food samples will also be covered. Briefly, pesticide analysis is usually performed in two stages: sample preparation and analytical instrumentation. Some of the preparation methods such as QuEChERs still remain as the technique of choice for most of the analytical scientists. In terms of the instrumentation such as the gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS) and high performance-liquid chromatography (HPLC), these are still widely used, in spite of new inventions that are more sustainable and efficient such as the capillary electrophoresis (CE). Finally, the third section emphasizes on how pesticides can affect our health significantly whereby different types of pesticides result in different adverse health implications, despite its application benefits in agriculture in controlling pests. To date, there are limited reviews on pesticide usage in many agricultural-based nations; for the purpose of this review, Malaysia is selected to better illustrate pesticide regulations and implementation of policies. Finally, the review aims to provide an insight on how implementation of GAP and food safety assurance are inter-related and with this established correlation, to identify further measures for improvement to enable reinforcement of optimised agricultural practices specifically in these countries.

Abstract
In the acidic environment of the stomach, nitrosatable pesticide residues may react with nitrite to form potentially carcinogenic pesticide-associated N-nitroso compounds (PANOCs). The objective of this study was to develop a method for the analysis of 10 nitrosatable pesticides and breakdown products in human serum and urine. Three sample preparation methods were evaluated for extraction of target analytes from the biomatrices. Deproteinization by methanol for 300-μL aliquots of serum with a final extract volume of 225 μL resulted in excessive ion enhancement of some analytes and suppression of others. Three types of solid-phase extraction cartridges were tested for optimal analyte retention from 200-μL aliquots of serum with a final extract volume of 400 μL; this approach resulted in significant analyte loss for some compounds. The Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe approach resulted in a suitable method for extraction of the analytes from each biomatrix. Biofluid samples (500 μL) were spiked to 100 μg L-1 with analytical standards and extracted using 500 μL of acetonitrile (ACN) with 4% acetic acid (AcOH) for serum and 0.1% AcOH in ACN for urine. For extraction, 200 mg magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) and 50 mg sodium acetate were added for serum and 200 mg MgSO4 and 50 mg sodium chloride were added for urine. Final extract volumes for both biomatrices using the QuEChERS method was 400 μL after dilution. Samples were analyzed via ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography/high-resolution accurate mass orbital ion trap mass spectrometry. Mean recoveries for target analytes in serum and urine ranged between 74 and 120% (%RSD < 12) and 96 to 116% (%RSD ≤ 10), respectively. These methods may be used in large-scale biomonitoring studies to analyze PANNs and their parent compounds in human serum and urine.

Abstract
In the present work, a high-efficiency and solvent minimized microextraction technique, fabric phase sorptive extraction followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis is proposed for the rapid determination of four organophosphorus pesticides (terbufos, malathion, chlorpyrifos, and triazofos) in vegetable samples including beans, tomato, brinjal, and cabbage. Fabric phase sorptive extraction combines the beneficial features of sol-gel derived microextraction sorbents with the rich surface chemistry of cellulose fabric substrate, which collectively form a highly efficient microextraction system. Fabric phase sorptive extraction membrane, when immersed directly into the sample matrix, may extract target analytes even when high percentage of matrix interferents are present. The technique also greatly simplifies sample preparation workflow. Most important fabric phase sorptive extraction parameters were investigated and optimized. The developed method displayed good linearity over the concentration range 0.5-500 ng/g. Under optimum experimental conditions, the limits of detection were found in the range of 0.033 to 0.136 ng/g. The relative standard deviations for the extraction of organophosphorus pesticides were < 5%. Subsequently, the new method was applied to beans, tomato, brinjal, and cabbage samples. The results from the real sample analysis indicate that the method is green, rapid, and economically feasible for the determination of organophosphorus pesticides in vegetable samples.

Abstract
Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography/electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used for the trace level determination of isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate (Sarin, GB) and ( O-ethyl S-[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl] methylphosphonothioate (VX) after extraction from various foods. A method utilizing normal phase silica gel was developed for the sample preparation and extraction of VX and GB from food. The extraction efficiencies of the normal phase silica gel method for VX was compared to those of other commercial solid phase extraction media and was found to be comparable. Sarin was found to be incompatible with both the mixed mode cation exchange (MCX) sorbents and QuEChERS methods that are commercially available but was successful with the normal phase silica gel method. The linear range of quantitation for VX was 0.1-330 ng/mL and for GB was 20-1200 ng/mL. The average recoveries of VX and GB from the various food matrices along with the corresponding relative standard deviations (RSDs) are reported.

Abstract
In this study, we demonstrated an assay with turn-on fluorescence for monitoring cerebrospinal acetylcholinesterase (AChE) fluctuation as a biomarker for organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) poisoning and management based on single layer MnO2 nanosheets with graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as signal readout. Initially, the fluorescence of GQDs was quenched by MnO2 nanosheets mainly due to the inner filter effect (IFE). However, with the presence of reductive thiocholine (TCh), the enzymatic product, hydrolyzed from acetylthiocholine (ATCh) by AChE, the redox reaction between MnO2 and TCh occurred, leading to the destruction of the MnO2 nanosheets, and thereby IFE was diminished gradually. As a consequence, the turn-on fluorescence of GQDs with the changes in the spectrum of the dispersion constituted a new mechanism for sensing of cerebrospinal AChE. With the method developed here, we could monitor cerebrospinal AChE fluctuation of rats exposed to OPs before and after therapy, and could thereby open up the pathway to a new sensing platform for better understanding the mechanism of brain dysfunctions associate with OPs poisoning.

Abstract
Nowadays, owing to the increasing population and the attempts to satisfy its needs, pesticides are widely applied to control the quantity and quality of agricultural products. However, the presence of pesticide residues and their metabolites in environmental samples is hazardous to the health of humans and all other living organisms. Thus, monitoring these compounds is extremely important to ensure that only permitted levels of pesticide are consumed. To this end, fast, reliable, and environmentally friendly methods that can accurately analyze dilute, complex samples containing both parent substances and their metabolites are required. Focusing primarily on research published since 2010, this review summarizes the use of various sample pretreatment techniques to extract pesticides from various matrices, combined with on-line preconcentration strategies for sensitivity improvement, and subsequent capillary electrophoresis analysis.

Abstract
Novel hybrid TiO2particles were developed and assessed as an adsorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE) of organophosphorus pesticides (fensulfothion, parathion methyl, coumaphos, and diazinon) from spiked water. The sol-gel method was used to synthesize TiO2particles, which were coated with free-radical polystyrene (PS) and poly(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PClHPMA) polymers. Particle structures were determined via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to confirm that the polymers were successfully anchored to the TiO2particles. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted to determine organic and inorganic matter in TiO2-PS and TiO2-PClHPMA particles showing results of 20 : 80 wt/wt% and 23 : 77 wt/wt%, respectively. SEM-EDS and X-ray diffraction test were conducted to determine the morphology and semielemental composition of the particles showing amorphous characteristics. By observing the contact angle, particles coated with PClHPMA were determined to be more hydrophilic than TiO2-PS particles. The pore size distributions obtained from the N2adsorption-desorption isotherms were 0.150 and 0.168 cm3g−1. The specific surface area (BET) was 239.9 m2g−1for TiO2-PS and 225.7 m2g−1for TiO2-PClHPMA. The synthesized particles showed relatively high yields of adsorption in SPE. The pesticide recoveries obtained by high performance liquid chromatography ranged from 6 to 26% for TiO2-PClHPMA and 44 to 92% for TiO2-PS.

Abstract
Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.

Abstract
Background: A typical conventional SPE method development (MD) process usually involves deciding the chemistry of the sorbent and eluent based on information about the analyte; experimentally preparing and trying out various combinations of adsorption chemistry and elution conditions; quantitatively evaluating the various conditions; and comparing quantitative results from all combination of conditions to select the best condition for method qualification. The second and fourth steps have mostly been performed manually until now. Results: We developed an automation-assisted system that expedites the conventional SPE MD process by automating 99% of the second step, and expedites the fourth step by automatically processing the results data and presenting it to the analyst in a user-friendly format. Conclusion: The automation-assisted SPE MD system greatly saves the manual labor in SPE MD work, prevents analyst errors from causing misinterpretation of quantitative results, and shortens data analysis and interpretation time.

Abstract
Pesticides are among the most dangerous environmental pollutants because of their stability, mobility and long-term effects on living organisms. Their presence in the environment is a particular danger. It is therefore crucial to monitor pesticide residues using all available analytical methods. The analysis of environmental samples for the presence of pesticides is very difficult: the processes involved in sample preparation are labor-intensive and time-consuming. To date, it has been standard practice to use large quantities of organic solvents in the sample preparation process; but as these solvents are themselves hazardous, solvent-less and solvent-minimized techniques are becoming popular. The application of Green Chemistry principles to sample preparation is primarily leading to the miniaturization of procedures and the use of solvent-less techniques, and these are discussed in the paper.
