Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy as a tool to characterise water in adsorption/confinement situations

Relevance of Specific Surface of Mixed Oxide Derived from Layered Double Hydroxides on the Rheological Properties and Porosity of Cement Pastes

Cement-based products are the synthetic materials most used by humans, with consequent environmental impacts. One strategy that can assist in mitigating the adverse environmental effects of these materials involves the incorporation of multifunctional nanostructured additives. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the efficacy of incorporating mixed oxides (MO) derived from layered double hydroxides (LDH) to control the rheology and porosity of cement-based matrices. Thermal aging of LDH enabled the preparation of MO with different specific surface areas (SSA) for incorporation in different amounts in Portland cement. A low proportion of MO and low SSA increased workability by 22%. In contrast, a high proportion of MO and high SSA led to a 2.4-fold acceleration of cement consolidation and a 36.9% decrease of the porosity of the composite. These features could be attributed to additive-matrix interactions, with the LDH memory effect playing key roles in the cement crystal seed process and in competition for the absorption of free water within the cement paste. Therefore, the unprecedent results obtained suggest that the quantity and SSA of MO are key parameters to fine-tune the paste rheology and structure of hidrated cement. The MO materials showed easy adaptability and excellent potential for use as multifunctional additives in the production of eco-friendly, high-performance cement paste formulations with controllable properties according to the desired application.

Confined Water Dynamics in the Scaffolds of Polylactic Acid

Resorbable polylactic acid (PLA) ultrathin fibers have been applied as scaffolds for tissue engineering applications due to their micro- and nanoporous structure that favor cell adhesion, besides inducing cell proliferation and upregulating gene expression related to tissue regeneration. Incorporation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes into PLA fibers has been reported to increase the mechanical properties of the scaffold, making them even more suitable for tissue engineering applications. Ideally, scaffolds should be degraded simultaneously with tissue growth. Hydration and swelling are factors related to scaffold degradation. Hydration would negatively impact the mechanical properties since PLA shows hydrolytic degradation. Water absorption critically affects the catalysis and allowance of the hydrolysis reactions. Moreover, either mass transport and chemical reactions are influenced by confined water, which is an unexplored subject for PLA micro- and nanoporous fibers. Here, we probe and investigate confined water onto highly porous PLA microfibers containing few amounts of incorporated carbon nanotubes by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. A hydrostatic pressure was applied to the fibers to enhance the intermolecular interactions between water molecules and C=O groups from polyester bonds, which were evaluated over the wavenumber between 1600 and 2000 cm-1. The analysis of temperature dependence of FTIR spectra indicated the presence of confined water which is characterized by a non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius crossover at T0 = 190 K for 1716 and 1817 cm-1 carbonyl bands of PLA. These bands are sensitive to a hydrogen bond network of confined water. The relevance of our finding relies on the challenge detecting confined water in hydrophobic cavities as in the PLA one. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first report referring the presence of confined water in a hydrophobic scaffold as PLA for tissue engineering. Our findings can provide new opportunities to understand the role of confined water in tissue engineering applications. For instance, we argue that PLA degradation may be affected the most by confined water. PLA degradation involves hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation reactions, which can both be sensitive to changes in water properties.

Performance and mechanisms of alkaline solid waste in CO2 mineralization and utilization

CO2 mineral sequestration using alkaline solid waste (ASW) is a promising strategy for synergistically reducing CO2 emissions and reusing industrial waste. However, improvement the carbonation degree still remains challenges due to the sluggish leaching rate of Ca/Mg ion at low pH. To the issues, this study proposed an amine-mediated CO2 absorption and mineralization process with six common ASWs, as well an ecological utilization route of CO2-ASW productions. Experimental results indicated that calcium carbide slag (CS) had greater CO2 mineralization capacity (86.2 g-CO2/kg-CS) than other ASWs, while stirring rate and particle size played a more important role during CO2 capture. Amine-mediated CO2 capture was verified to be more excellent with steel slag (SS) as mineral medium. When the MEA concentration was increased to 2 mol/L, the extraction efficiency of Ca2+ was increased by 35 %, leaded to the CO2 removal efficiency significantly promoted from 49 % to 92 %. The characterization of structural morphology referred spherical aragonite or needle-bar calcite was dominant for the porous mineralization products (30.6 m2/g). High germination index of pea seed (112.1 % at a dose of 10 g/L) inferred the negligible toxicological effects of tiny MEA residue over SS mineralization products, after centrifugally washing treatment. Pea seeds cultivated with mineralized products after centrifugal washing can achieve a growth rate of about 4 mm/d. Overall, this work provides a feasible route to apply the porous CO2-ASWs production into water conservation in arid and sandy land.

Synergistic removal of phosphorus and fluorine impurities in phosphogypsum by enzyme-induced modified microbially induced carbonate precipitation method

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology is difficult to be used for phosphogypsum (PG) treatment because the pH of PG is too low to be suitable for the growth of some bacteria. When acidophilus bacteria are used to treat PG, their low mineralization rate leads to low removal of the impurities. Based on the above problems, this study reports a new method that uses enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) modified acidophilus bacteria solution to remove phosphorus (P) and fluorine (F) in PG. Five kinds of mixtures of MICP and EICP (ME) were used to leach the PG column, and its mechanism was discussed. The results show that when the ratio of MICP to EICP is 2:1, the removal ratio of P and F is the highest, which reaches 72.87-74.92%. Compared with the single traditional bacillus solution or single acidophilic bacteria solution, the impurity removal ratio of the ME21 (MICP:EICP=2:1) mixture is increased by about 13%. The good acid resistance of the urease enzyme and acidophilic bacteria improves their growth and activity, thus increasing the biomineralization rate by about 22%. Additionally, the ME treatment is 30% cheaper than the traditional binder treatment. Therefore, this new treatment is a low-cost and environmentally friendly method.

Diatomaceous Earth-Lightweight Pozzolanic Admixtures for Repair Mortars-Complex Chemical and Physical Assessment

The presented research is focused on the complex assessment of three different types of diatomaceous earth and evaluation of their ability for application as pozzolana active admixtures applicable in the concrete industry and the production of repair mortars applicable for historical masonry. The comprehensive experimental campaign comprised chemical, mineralogical, microstructural, and physical testing of raw materials, followed by the analyses and characterization of pozzolanic activity, rheology and heat evolution of fresh blended pastes, and testing of macrostructural and mechanical parameters of the hardened 28-days and 90-days samples. The obtained results gave evidence of the different behavior of researched diatomaceous earth when mixed with water and Portland cement. The differences in heat evolution, initial and final setting time, porosity, density, and mechanical parameters were identified based on chemical and phase composition, particle size, specific surface, and morphology of diatomaceous particles. Nevertheless, the researched mineral admixtures yielded a high strength activity index (92.9% to 113.6%), evinced their pozzolanic activity. Three fundamental factors were identified that affect diatomaceous earth's contribution to the mechanical strength of cement blends. These are the filler effect, the pertinent acceleration of OPC hydration, and the pozzolanic reaction of diatomite with Portland cement hydrates. The optimum replacement level of ordinary Portland cement by diatomaceous earth to give maximum long-term strength enhancement is about 10 wt.%., but it might be further enhanced based on the properties of pozzolan.

Three-Dimensional Confinement of Water: H2O Exhibits Long-Range (>50 nm) Structure while D2O Does Not

Water is the liquid of life thanks to its three-dimensional adaptive hydrogen (H)-bond network. Confinement of this network may lead to dramatic structural changes influencing chemical and physical transformations. Although confinement effects occur on a <1 nm length scale, the upper length scale limit is unknown. Here, we investigate 3D-confinement over lengths scales ranging from 58-140 nm. By confining water in zwitterionic liposomes of different sizes and measuring the change in H-bond network conformation using second harmonic scattering (SHS), we determined long-range confinement effects in light and heavy water. D₂O displays no detectable 3D-confinement effects <58 nm (<3 × 10⁶ D₂O molecules). H₂O is distinctly different. The vesicle enclosed inner H-bond network has a different conformation compared to the outside network and the SHS response scales with the volume of the confining space. H₂O displays confinement effects over distances >100 nm (>2 × 10⁷ H₂O molecules).

Long-Term Comparison between Waste Paper Fly Ash and Traditional Binder as Hydraulic Road Binder Exposed to Sulfate Concentrations

Sulfate attack is one of the drawbacks of cementitious materials for stabilized soils. In the current study, a durability comparison of stabilized soil with cement (Type IV) and waste paper fly ash (WPFA) was conducted. First, the treated soil's unconfined compressive strength (UCS) was tested. Next, the treated soil was subjected to various wetting/drying cycles with various sulfate concentrations and temperatures for a year. In the meantime, samples were taken for DRX, FTIR, and TGA microstructural analyses. Additionally, samples were manufactured to track swelling over an 800 day period. The outcomes show that WPFA's UCS remained constant. Furthermore, ettringite development can be seen in the microstructural studies, however testing on linear displacement over 800 days revealed no significant changes in swelling. Finally, SEM was used to verify the ettringite formation at 360 days in order to confirm the previous findings. All the results indicated that stabilizing soil with 5% of WPFA and 3% of cement IV is possible even in presence of high sulfate concentrations, while maintaining the durability of the structure.

Hydration-Strength-Workability-Durability of Binary, Ternary, and Quaternary Composite Pastes

At present, reducing carbon emissions is an urgent problem that needs to be solved in the cement industry. This study used three mineral admixtures materials: limestone powder (0-10%), metakaolin (0-15%), and fly ash (0-30%). Binary, ternary, and quaternary pastes were prepared, and the specimens' workability, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse speed, surface resistivity, and the heat of hydration were studied; X-ray diffraction and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared tests were conducted. In addition, the influence of supplementary cementitious materials on the compressive strength and durability of the blended paste and the sustainable development of the quaternary-blended paste was analyzed. The experimental results are summarized as follows: (1) metakaolin can reduce the workability of cement paste; (2) the addition of alternative materials can promote cement hydration and help improve long-term compressive strength; (3) surface resistivity tests show that adding alternative materials can increase the value of surface resistivity; (4) the quaternary-blended paste can greatly reduce the accumulated heat of hydration; (5) increasing the amount of supplementary cementitious materials can effectively reduce carbon emissions compared with pure cement paste. In summary, the quaternary-blended paste has great advantages in terms of durability and sustainability and has good development prospects.

The impacts of sodium nitrate on hydration and microstructure of Portland cement and the leaching behavior of Sr2

Immobilization and solidification of low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste liquid from nuclear power station involves the interaction between highly concentrated sodium nitrate solution and cement paste. This study aims to clarify the influence of sodium nitrate on the hydration kinetics of cement matrices, hydration products and microstructure. The hydration heat evolution in the first 28 days are tested by calorimetry. The hydration products are examined by XRD and DTG while the structure of C-S-H is characterized by NMR, FTIR and XPS. The results indicate that sodium nitrate reduced the degree of hydration and reduced the degree of the polymerization of C-S-H gel. The C-S-H of solidified cement matrices that contained the highest concentration of sodium nitrate is predominantly composed of Q² and Q¹ Si, while more Q³ units are found in the matrices without sodium nitrate. The decomposition temperature of Ca(OH)₂ decreased with the increasing concentration of sodium nitrate solution because of the geometrical transformation of Ca(OH)₂. Sodium nitrate in solidified cement matrices mainly existed in the form of granular crystalline phase. The cumulative leaching fraction of Sr²⁺ increases with the increasing concentration of NaNO₃ solution.

Hydration and Microstructure of Cement Pastes with Calcined Hwangtoh Clay

Calcined Hwangtoh (HT) clay is a very promising supplementary cementitious material (SCM). In this work, the development of the mechanical properties and microstructures of HT-blended cement paste was studied after substituting the binder with HT powder calcined at 800 °C. The water-to-binder (w/b) ratios of the paste used were 0.2 and 0.5, and the quantities of HT powder added to the mixture were 0, 10, and 20%. The compressive strength test indicates that the addition of the HT powder increases the compressive strength of the paste after seven days of curing, and the highest compressive strength is obtained with the 10% HT substitution, regardless of whether the w/b ratio is 0.5 or 0.2. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis show that the HT powder not only has a physical effect (i.e., nucleation effect and dilution effect) on cement hydration but also has a chemical effect (i.e., chemical reaction of HT). The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) analysis show that the paste has more ettringite during the early stage, and the microstructure is refined after the addition of the HT powder. In addition, the relationships between chemically bound water, hydration heat, and compressive strength are presented.

Gibbs free energy of liquid water derived from infrared measurements

A completely new set of IR bands of liquid water from 4 cm⁻¹ to 4000 cm⁻¹ is studied from spectroscopic and thermodynamic viewpoints over a large thermal range, evidencing the so-called isosbestic points on the different absorption bands.

Water cluster confinement and methane adsorption in the hydrophobic cavities of a fluorinated metal-organic framework

Water cluster formation and methane adsorption within a hydrophobic porous metal organic framework is studied by in situ vibrational spectroscopy, adsorption isotherms, and first-principle DFT calculations (using vdW-DF). Specifically, the formation and stability of H2O clusters in the hydrophobic cavities of a fluorinated metal-organic framework (FMOF-1) is examined. Although the isotherms of water show no measurable uptake (see Yang et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011 , 133 , 18094 ), the large dipole of the water internal modes makes it possible to detect low water concentrations using IR spectroscopy in pores in the vicinity of the surface of the solid framework. The results indicate that, even in the low pressure regime (100 mTorr to 3 Torr), water molecules preferentially occupy the large cavities, in which hydrogen bonding and wall hydrophobicity foster water cluster formation. We identify the formation of pentameric water clusters at pressures lower than 3 Torr and larger clusters beyond that pressure. The binding energy of the water species to the walls is negligible, as suggested by DFT computational findings and corroborated by IR absorption data. Consequently, intermolecular hydrogen bonding dominates, enhancing water cluster stability as the size of the cluster increases. The formation of water clusters with negligible perturbation from the host may allow a quantitative comparison with experimental environmental studies on larger clusters that are in low concentrations in the atmosphere. The stability of the water clusters was studied as a function of pressure reduction and in the presence of methane gas. Methane adsorption isotherms for activated FMOF-1 attained volumetric adsorption capacities ranging from 67 V(STP)/V at 288 K and 31 bar to 133 V(STP)/V at 173 K and 5 bar, with an isosteric heat of adsorption of ca. 14 kJ/mol in the high temperature range (288-318 K). Overall, the experimental and computational data suggest high preferential uptake for methane gas relative to water vapor within FMOF-1 pores with ease of desorption and high framework stability under operative temperature and moisture conditions.
