Biomass gasification, catalytic technologies and energy integration for production of circular methanol: New horizons for industry decarbonisation

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recognises the pivotal role of renewable energies in the future energy system and the achievement of the zero-emission target. The implementation of renewables should provide major opportunities and enable a more secure and decentralised energy supply system. Renewable fuels provide long-term solutions for the transport sector, particularly for applications where fuels with high energy density are required. In addition, it helps reducing the carbon footprint of these sectors in the long-term. Information on biomass characteristics feedstock is essential for scaling-up gasification from the laboratory to industrial-scale. This review deals with the transformation biogenic residues into a valuable bioenergy carrier like biomethanol as the liquid sunshine based on the combination of modified mature technologies such as gasification with other innovative solutions such as membranes and microchannel reactors. Tar abatement is a critical process in product gas upgrading since tars compromise downstream processes and equipment, for this, membrane technology for upgrading syngas quality is discussed in this paper. Microchannel reactor technology with the design of state-of-the-art multifunctional catalysts provides a path to develop decentralised biomethanol synthesis from biogenic residues. Finally, the development of a process chain for the production of (i) methanol as an intermediate energy carrier, (ii) electricity and (iii) heat for decentralised applications based on biomass feedstock flexible gasification, gas upgrading and methanol synthesis is analysed.

Nanoparticle-Embedded Polymers and Their Applications: A Review

There has been increasing interest in the study and development of nanoparticle-embedded polymeric materials and their applications to special membranes. Nanoparticle-embedded polymeric materials have been observed to have a desirable compatibility with commonly used membrane matrices, a wide range of functionalities, and tunable physicochemical properties. The development of nanoparticle-embedded polymeric materials has shown great potential to overcome the longstanding challenges faced by the membrane separation industry. One major challenge that has been a bottleneck to the progress and use of membranes is the balance between the selectivity and the permeability of the membranes. Recent developments in the fabrication of nanoparticle-embedded polymeric materials have focused on how to further tune the properties of the nanoparticles and membranes to improve the performance of the membranes even further. Techniques for improving the performance of nanoparticle-embedded membranes by exploiting their surface characteristics and internal pore and channel structures to a significant degree have been incorporated into the fabrication processes. Several fabrication techniques are discussed in this paper and used to produce both mixed-matrix membranes and homogenous nanoparticle-embedded polymeric materials. The discussed fabrication techniques include interfacial polymerization, self-assembly, surface coating, and phase inversion. With the current interest shown in the field of nanoparticle-embedded polymeric materials, it is expected that better-performing membranes will be developed soon.

Recent advance in biomass membranes: Fabrication, functional regulation, and antimicrobial applications

Both inorganic and polymeric membranes have been widely applied for antimicrobial applications. However, these membranes exhibit low biocompatibility, weak biodegradability, and potential toxicity to human being and environment. Biomass materials serve as excellent candidates for fabricating functional membranes to address these problems due to their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. Here we present recent progress in the fabrication, functional regulation, and antimicrobial applications of various biomass-based membranes. We first introduce the types of biomass membranes and their fabrication methods, including the phase inversion, vacuum filtration, electrospinning, layer-by-layer self-assembly, and coating. Then, the strategies on functional regulation of biomass membranes by adding 0D, 1D, and 2D nanomaterials are presented and analyzed. In addition, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral applications of biomass-based functional membranes are summarized. Finally, potential development aspects of biomass membranes are discussed and prospected. This comprehensive review is valuable for guiding the design, synthesis, structural/functional tailoring, and sustainable utilization of biomass membranes.

Microstructure and Hydrogen Permeability of Nb-Ni-Ti-Zr-Co High Entropy Alloys

Hydrogen separation membranes are one of the most promising technologies for hydrogen purification. The development of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) for hydrogen separation membranes is driven by a "cocktail effect" of elements with different hydrogen affinities to prevent hydride formation and retain high permeability due to the single-phase BCC structure. In this paper, equimolar and non-equimolar Nb-Ni-Ti-Zr-Co high entropy alloys were fabricated by arc melting. The microstructure and phase composition of the alloys were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The hydrogen permeation experiments were performed at 300-500 °C and a hydrogen pressure of 4 bar. In order to estimate the effect of composition and lattice structure on hydrogen location and diffusivity in Nb-Ni-Ti-Zr-Co alloy, ab initio calculations of hydrogen binding energy were performed using virtual crystal approximation. It was found that Nb-enriched and near equimolar BCC phases were formed in Nb₂₀Ni₂₀Ti₂₀Zr₂₀Co₂₀ HEA while Nb-enriched BCC and B2-Ni(Ti, Zr) were formed in Nb₄₀Ni₂₅Ti₁₈Zr₁₂Co₅ alloy. Hydrogen permeability tests showed that Nb₂₀Ni₂₀Ti₂₀Zr₂₀Co₂₀ HEA shows lower activation energy and higher permeability at lower temperatures as well as higher resistance to hydrogen embrittlement compared to Nb₄₀Ni₂₅Ti₁₈Zr₁₂Co₅ alloy. The effect of composition, microstructure and hydrogen binding energies on permeability of the fabricated alloys was discussed.

Optimization of CO2/H2 Separation over Ba-SAPO-34 Zeolite Membrane Synthesized by Microwave Heating

CO₂/H₂ separation using membrane technology is an important research area in order to obtain high purity hydrogen as one source of clean energy. Finding a suitable inorganic membrane is one of the critical issues, which needs to be explored for CO₂/H₂ separation. In the present study, Ba-SAPO-34 zeolite membrane was synthesized and followed by a modification process. CO₂/H₂ separation of the membrane was investigated by varying the independent process variables (CO₂ % in the feed, pressure difference across the membrane and temperature). Modeling and optimization for the responses (CO₂/H₂ separation selectivity and CO₂ permeance) was performed by applying response surface methodology and central composite design, which is available in Design Expert software. The accuracy of the models in predicting the response was tested by comparing with the experimental value of response and the two values were in good agreement. The optimization of the models gave CO₂ permeance of 19.23 × 10^-7 mol/m² s Pa and CO₂/H₂ separation selectivity of 11.6 at 5% CO₂ in the feed, a pressure difference of 100 kPa, and temperature of 30 °C for Ba-SAPO-34 zeolite membrane.

Incorporating Carbon Nanotubes in Nanocomposite Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Gas Separation: A Review

Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a prominent material for gas separation due to its inherent smoothness of walls, allowing rapid transport of gases compared to other inorganic fillers. It also possesses high mechanical strength, enabling membranes to operate at high pressure. Although it has superior properties compared to other inorganic fillers, preparation of CNTs into a polymer matrix remains challenging due to the strong van der Waals forces of CNTs, which lead to agglomeration of CNTs. To utilize the full potential of CNTs, proper dispersion of CNTs must be addressed. In this paper, methods to improve the dispersion of CNTs using functionalization methods were discussed. Fabrication techniques for CNT mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) nanocomposites and their impact on gas separation performance were compared. This paper also reviewed the applications and potential of CNT MMMs in gas separation.

Versatile and Resistant Electroless Pore-Plated Pd-Membranes for H2-Separation: Morphology and Performance of Internal Layers in PSS Tubes

Pd-membranes are interesting in multiple ultra-pure hydrogen production processes, although they can suffer inhibition by certain species or abrasion under fluidization conditions in membrane reactors, thus requiring additional protective layers to ensure long and stable operation. The ability to incorporate intermediate and palladium films with enough adherence on both external and internal surfaces of tubular porous supports becomes crucial to minimize their complexity and cost. This study addresses the incorporation of CeO₂ and Pd films onto the internal side of PSS tubes for applications in which further protection could be required. The membranes so prepared, with a Pd-thickness around 12–15 μm, show an excellent mechanical resistance and similar performance to those prepared on the external surface. A good fit to Sieverts’ law with an H₂-permeance of 4.571 × 10⁻³ mol m⁻² s⁻¹ Pa^−0.5 at 400 °C, activation energy around 15.031 kJ mol⁻¹, and complete ideal perm-selectivity was observed. The permeate fluxes reached in H₂ mixtures with N₂, He, or CO₂ decreased with dilution and temperature due to the inherent concentration-polarization. The presence of CO in mixtures provoked a higher decrease because of a further inhibition effect. However, the original flux was completely recovered after feeding again with pure hydrogen, maintaining stable operation for at least 1000 h.

Hydrogen Production and Its Applications to Mobility

Hydrogen has been identified as one of the key elements to bolster longer-term climate neutrality and strategic autonomy for several major countries. Multiple road maps emphasize the need to accelerate deployment across its supply chain and utilization. Being one of the major contributors to global CO₂ emissions, the transportation sector finds in hydrogen an appealing alternative to reach sustainable development through either its direct use in fuel cells or further transformation to sustainable fuels. This review summarizes the latest developments in hydrogen use across the major energy-consuming transportation sectors. Rooted in a systems engineering perspective, we present an analysis of the entire hydrogen supply chain across its economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Providing an outlook on the sector, we discuss the challenges hydrogen faces in penetrating the different transportation markets. Tunable Supramolecular Cavities Molecularly Homogenized in Polymer Membranes for Ultraefficient Precombustion CO2 Capture

Processable molecular-sieving membranes are important materials for realizing energy-efficient precombustion CO₂ capture during industrial-scale hydrogen production. However, the promising design of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) that aims to integrate the molecular-sieving properties of nanoporous architectures with industrial processable polymers still faces performance and fabrication issues due to the formation of segregated nanofiller domains in their polymer matrices. Here, an unconventional nanocomposite membrane design is proposed using soluble organic macrocyclic cavitands (OMCs) with tunable open cavity sizes that not only mitigate the formation the discrete nanofiller phases but also deliver distinct molecular-sieving separations. The versatile organic-solvent solubility coupled with highly interactive functionalities of OMCs allows them to obtain molecularly homogeneous mixing with matrix polymers and form only one integral continuous phase crucial to the robust processability of polymers. A series of polybenzimidazole-based molecularly mixed composite membranes (MMCMs) are fabricated via the incorporation of a soluble and thermally stable OMC choice, sulfocalixarenes, with various cavity sizes. These membranes achieve outstanding high-temperature mixed-gas H₂ /CO₂ separation performances comparable with several state-of-the-art molecular-sieving membranes owing to effective size-sieving gas passages through the open or partially-intruded supramolecular cavities. The broadly tunable structures and functionalities of OMCs would make their MMCMs attractive for other energy-intensive molecular separations.

Nonequilibrium Processes in Polymer Membrane Formation: Theory and Experiment

Porous polymer and copolymer membranes are useful for ultrafiltration of functional macromolecules, colloids, and water purification. In particular, block copolymer membranes offer a bottom-up approach to form isoporous membranes. To optimize permeability, selectivity, longevity, and cost, and to rationally design fabrication processes, direct insights into the spatiotemporal structure evolution are necessary. Because of a multitude of nonequilibrium processes in polymer membrane formation, theoretical predictions via continuum models and particle simulations remain a challenge. We compiled experimental observations and theoretical approaches for homo- and block copolymer membranes prepared by nonsolvent-induced phase separation and highlight the interplay of multiple nonequilibrium processes─evaporation, solvent-nonsolvent exchange, diffusion, hydrodynamic flow, viscoelasticity, macro- and microphase separation, and dynamic arrest─that dictates the complex structure of the membrane on different scales.

Physicochemical Properties of Membrane Adsorber from Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (PEFB) by Acid Activation

A membrane adsorbent was successfully made from palm empty fruit bunches (PEFB), which was pyrolysed as physical activation. The effect of adding the impact of one-step catalyst (hydrochloric acid) and differences in the concentration on the characteristics and structure and deconvolution are investigated in this study. The results of the research have been successfully created and characterised using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) isotherm, and membrane morphology using SEM test. Membrane performance testing was carried out using a biogas flame test. The adsorber membrane was made by adding NH₄Cl as a cationic surfactant, polyvinyl acetate (PVA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a ratio of 1:3. The FTIR test has a functional group: O-H; C-H stretch; C=C-C; Arly O-Strech; C-O. Adsorbent membrane with the addition of 0.5 M HCl catalyst had the highest ratio of O-H/C=C-C relative area of 4.33. The diffractogram shows an amorphous structure with (002) and (100) graph planes. Adsorber membrane with a concentration of 1.5 M HCl has formed amorphous structured fibre. The adsorber membrane with a concentration of 0.5 HCl activator gave a surface area of 0.5345 m² g⁻¹ and a pore volume of 0.000983 cm³ g⁻¹.

Thermodynamic Assessment of a Solar-Driven Integrated Membrane Reactor for Ethanol Steam Reforming

To efficiently convert and utilize intermittent solar energy, a novel solar-driven ethanol steam reforming (ESR) system integrated with a membrane reactor is proposed. It has the potential to convert low-grade solar thermal energy into high energy level chemical energy. Driven by chemical potential, hydrogen permeation membranes (HPM) can separate the generated hydrogen and shift the ESR equilibrium forward to increase conversion and thermodynamic efficiency. The thermodynamic and environmental performances are analyzed via numerical simulation under a reaction temperature range of 100-400 °C with permeate pressures of 0.01-0.75 bar. The highest theoretical conversion rate is 98.3% at 100 °C and 0.01 bar, while the highest first-law efficiency, solar-to-fuel efficiency, and exergy efficiency are 82.3%, 45.3%, and 70.4% at 215 °C and 0.20 bar. The standard coal saving rate (SCSR) and carbon dioxide reduction rate (CDRR) are maximums of 101 g·m-2·h-1 and 247 g·m-2·h-1 at 200 °C and 0.20 bar with a hydrogen generation rate of 22.4 mol·m-2·h-1. This study illustrates the feasibility of solar-driven ESR integrated with a membrane reactor and distinguishes a novel approach for distributed hydrogen generation and solar energy utilization and upgradation.

Assessment of Sieverts Law Assumptions and 'n' Values in Palladium Membranes: Experimental and Theoretical Analyses

Palladium and palladium alloy membranes are superior materials for hydrogen purification, removal, or reaction processes. Sieverts’ Law suggests that the flux of hydrogen through such membranes is proportional to the difference between the feed and permeate side partial pressures, each raised to the 0.5 power (n = 0.5). Sieverts’ Law is widely applied in analyzing the steady state hydrogen permeation through Pd-based membranes, even in some cases where the assumptions made in deriving Sieverts’ Law do not apply. Often permeation data are fit to the model allowing the pressure exponent (n) to vary. This study experimentally assessed the validity of Sieverts’ Law as hydrogen was separated from other gases and theoretically modelled the effects of pressure and temperature on the assumptions and hence the accuracy of the 0.5-power law even with pure hydrogen feed. Hydrogen fluxes through Pd and Pd-Ag alloy foils from feed mixtures (5–83% helium in hydrogen; 473–573 K; with and without a sweep gas) were measured to study the effect of concentration polarization (CP) on hydrogen permeance and the applicability of Sieverts’ Law under such conditions. Concentration polarization was found to dominate hydrogen transport under some experimental conditions, particularly when feed concentrations of hydrogen were low. All mixture feed experiments showed deviation from Sieverts’ Law. For example, the hydrogen flux through Pd foil was found to be proportional to the partial pressure difference (n ≈ 1) rather than being proportional to the difference in the square root of the partial pressures (n = 0.5), as suggested by Sieverts’ Law, indicating the high degree of concentration polarization. A theoretical model accounting for Langmuir adsorption with temperature dependent adsorption equilibrium coefficient was made and used to assess the effect of varying feed pressure from 1–136 atm at fixed temperature, and of varying temperature from 298 to 1273 K at fixed pressure. Adsorption effects, which dominate at high pressure and at low temperature, result in pressure exponents (n) values less than 0.5. With better understanding of the transport steps, a qualitative analysis of literature (n) values of 0.5, 0.5 < n < 1, and n > 1, was conducted suggesting the role of each condition or step on the hydrogen transport based on the empirically fit exponent value.

Technological Advancement for Efficiency Enhancement of Biodiesel and Residual Glycerol Refining: A Mini Review

Biodiesel or known as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), is a diesel fuel substitute derived from the transesterification reaction of triglycerides with alcohol in the presence of suitable catalyst. The demand for biodiesel is increasing due to environmental and health awareness, as well as diminishing energy security. However, the presence of impurities in biodiesel will affect engine performance by corroding fuel tubes and damaging the injectors. Common methods for the purification of biodiesel include water washing, dry washing and membrane separation. This mini review compares the technological advancement for efficient enhancement of biodiesel and glycerol refining between wet washing, dry washing (activated compound, biomass-based adsorbents and silica-based adsorbents), ion exchange and membrane separation technology. The percentage of glycerol residues, soap, alcohol and catalyst from crude biodiesel was compared to reflect the resulting biodiesel purity variation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were also discussed.

The prospect of synthesis of PES/PEG blend membranes using blend NMP/DMF for CO2/N2 separation

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have been the root cause for anthropogenic climate change. Decarbonisation strategies, particularly carbon capture and storage (CCS) are crucial for mitigating the risk of global warming. Among all current CO2 separation technologies, membrane separation has the biggest potential for CCS as it is inexpensive, highly efficient, and simple to operate. Polymeric membranes are the preferred choice for the gas separation industry due to simpler methods of fabrication and lower costs compared to inorganic or mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). However, plasticisation and upper-bound trade-off between selectivity and permeability has limited the gas separation performance of polymeric membranes. Recently, researchers have found that the blending of glassy and rubbery polymers can effectively minimise trade-off between selectivity and permeability. Glassy poly(ethersulfone) (PES) and rubbery poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG) are polymers that are known to have a high affinity towards CO2. In this paper, PEG and PES are reviewed as potential polymer blend that can yield a final membrane with high CO2 permeance and CO2/nitrogen (N2) selectivity. Gas separation properties can be enhanced by using different solvents in the phase-inversion process. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) and Dimethylformamide (DMF) are common industrial solvents used for membrane fabrication. Both NMP and DMF are reviewed as prospective solvent blend that can improve the morphology and separation properties of PES/PEG blend membranes due to their effects on the membrane structure which increases permeation as well as selectivity. Thus, a PES/PEG blend polymeric membrane fabricated using NMP and DMF solvents is believed to be a major prospect for CO2/N2 gas separation.

Recent Advances in Membrane-Based Electrochemical Hydrogen Separation: A Review

In this paper an overview of commercial hydrogen separation technologies is given. These technologies are discussed and compared-with a detailed discussion on membrane-based technologies. An emerging and promising novel hydrogen separation technology, namely, electrochemical hydrogen separation (EHS) is reviewed in detail. EHS has many advantages over conventional separation systems (e.g., it is not energy intensive, it is environmentally-friendly with near-zero pollutants, it is known for its silent operation, and, the greatest advantage, simultaneous compression and purification can be achieved in a one-step operation). Therefore, the focus of this review is to survey open literature and research conducted to date on EHS. Current technological advances in the field of EHS that have been made are highlighted. In the conclusion, literature gaps and aspects of electrochemical hydrogen separation, that require further research, are also highlighted. Currently, the cost factor, lack of adequate understanding of the degradation mechanisms related to this technology, and the fact that certain aspects of this technology are as yet unexplored (e.g., simultaneous hydrogen separation and compression) all hinder its widespread application. In future research, some attention could be given to the aforementioned factors and emerging technologies, such as ceramic proton conductors and solid acids.

The opportunity of membrane technology for hydrogen purification in the power to hydrogen (P2H) roadmap: a review

The global energy market is in a transition towards low carbon fuel systems to ensure the sustainable development of our society and economy. This can be achieved by converting the surplus renewable energy into hydrogen gas. The injection of hydrogen (⩽10% v/v) in the existing natural gas pipelines is demonstrated to have negligible effects on the pipelines and is a promising solution for hydrogen transportation and storage if the end-user purification technologies for hydrogen recovery from hydrogen enriched natural gas (HENG) are in place. In this review, promising membrane technologies for hydrogen separation is revisited and presented. Dense metallic membranes are highlighted with the ability of producing 99.9999999% (v/v) purity hydrogen product. However, high operating temperature (⩾300 °C) incurs high energy penalty, thus, limits its application to hydrogen purification in the power to hydrogen roadmap. Polymeric membranes are a promising candidate for hydrogen separation with its commercial readiness. However, further investigation in the enhancement of H₂/CH₄ selectivity is crucial to improve the separation performance. The potential impacts of impurities in HENG on membrane performance are also discussed. The research and development outlook are presented, highlighting the essence of upscaling the membrane separation processes and the integration of membrane technology with pressure swing adsorption technology.

Biohydrogen production beyond the Thauer limit by precision design of artificial microbial consortia

Dark fermentative biohydrogen (H₂) production could become a key technology for providing renewable energy. Until now, the H₂ yield is restricted to 4 moles of H₂ per mole of glucose, referred to as the "Thauer limit". Here we show, that precision design of artificial microbial consortia increased the H₂ yield to 5.6 mol mol^-1 glucose, 40% higher than the Thauer limit. In addition, the volumetric H₂ production rates of our defined artificial consortia are superior compared to any mono-, co- or multi-culture system reported to date. We hope this study to be a major leap forward in the engineering of artificial microbial consortia through precision design and provide a breakthrough in energy science, biotechnology and ecology. Constructing artificial consortia with this drawing-board approach could in future increase volumetric production rates and yields of other bioprocesses. Our artificial consortia engineering blueprint might pave the way for the development of a H₂ production bioindustry.

A Review for Consistent Analysis of Hydrogen Permeability through Dense Metallic Membranes

The hydrogen permeation coefficient (ϕ) is generally used as a measure to show hydrogen permeation ability through dense metallic membranes, which is the product of the Fick’s diffusion coefficient (D) and the Sieverts’ solubility constant (K). However, the hydrogen permeability of metal membranes cannot be analyzed consistently with this conventional description. In this paper, various methods for consistent analysis of hydrogen permeability are reviewed. The derivations of the descriptions are explained in detail and four applications of the consistent descriptions of hydrogen permeability are introduced: (1) prediction of hydrogen flux under given conditions, (2) comparability of hydrogen permeability, (3) understanding of the anomalous temperature dependence of hydrogen permeability of Pd-Ag alloy membrane, and (4) design of alloy composition of non-Pd-based alloy membranes to satisfy both high hydrogen permeability together with strong resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.

Techno-Economic Assessment in a Fluidized Bed Membrane Reactor for Small-Scale H2 Production: Effect of Membrane Support Thickness

This paper investigates the influence of the support material and its thickness on the hydrogen flux in Palladium membranes in the presence of sweep gas in fluidized bed membrane reactors. The analysis is performed considering both ceramic and metallic supports with different properties. In general, ceramic supports are cheaper but suffer sealing problems, while metallic ones are more expensive but with much less sealing problems. Firstly, a preliminary analysis is performed to assess the impact of the support in the permeation flux, which shows that the membrane permeance can be halved when the H₂ diffusion through the support is considered. The most relevant parameter which affects the permeation is the porosity over tortuosity ratio of the porous support. Afterward, the different supports are compared from an economic point of view when applied to a membrane reactor designed for 100 kg/day of hydrogen, using biogas as feedstock. The stainless steel supports have lower impact on the hydrogen permeation so the required membrane surface area is 2.6 m² compared to 3.6 m² of the best ceramic support. This ends up as 5.6 €/kg H_2@20bar and 6.6 €/kg H_2@700bar for the best stainless steel support, which is 3% lower than the price calculated for the best ceramic support.

Overcoming chemical equilibrium limitations using a thermodynamically reversible chemical reactor

All real processes, be they chemical, mechanical or electrical, are thermodynamically irreversible and therefore suffer from thermodynamic losses. Here, we report the design and operation of a chemical reactor capable of approaching thermodynamically reversible operation. The reactor was employed for hydrogen production via the water-gas shift reaction, an important route to 'green' hydrogen. The reactor avoids mixing reactant gases by transferring oxygen from the (oxidizing) water stream to the (reducing) carbon monoxide stream via a solid-state oxygen reservoir consisting of a perovskite phase (La_0.6Sr_0.4FeO_3-δ). This reservoir is able to remain close to equilibrium with the reacting gas streams because of its variable degree of non-stoichiometry and thus develops a 'chemical memory' that we employ to approach reversibility. We demonstrate this memory using operando, spatially resolved, real-time, high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction on a working reactor. The design leads to a reactor unconstrained by overall chemical equilibrium limitations, which can produce essentially pure hydrogen and carbon dioxide as separate product streams.

Novel Polymeric Thin-Film Composite Membranes for High-Temperature Gas Separations

Novel selective polymeric thin-film composite membranes (TFCMs) for applications at elevated temperatures were developed. Thin selective layers of the polyimides Matrimid 5218^® and 6FDA-6FpDA were cast on a developed polybenzimidazole (PBI) porous support prepared by a phase inversion process. The TFCM properties were investigated with different gases in a wide temperature range, including temperatures up to 270 °C. The membranes showed very high thermal stability and performed well at the elevated temperatures. The development of highly thermally resistant polymeric membranes such as these TFCMs opens opportunities for application in high-temperature integrated processes, such as catalytic membrane reactors for the water-gas shift reaction in order to maximize H₂ yield.

Process Design Characteristics of Syngas (CO/H2) Separation Using Composite Membrane

The effectiveness of gas separation membranes and their application is continually growing owing to its simpler separation methods. In addition, their application is increasing for the separation of syngas (CO and H2) which utilizes cryogenic temperature during separation. Polymers are widely used as membrane material for performing the separation of various gaseous mixtures due to their attractive perm-selective properties and high processability. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the process design characteristics of syngas separation utilizing polyamide composite membrane with polyimide support. Moreover, characteristics of CO/H2 separation were investigated by varying inlet gas flow rates, stage cut, inlet gas pressures, and membrane module temperature. Beneficial impact in CO and H2 purity were obtained on increasing the flow rate with no significant effect of increasing membrane module temperature and approximately 97% pure CO was obtained from the third stage of the multi-stage membrane system.
