Iron mediated autotrophic denitrification for low C/N ratio wastewater: A review

In recent years, iron mediated autotrophic denitrification has been a concern because it overcomes the absence of organic carbon and has been successfully used in denitrification for low C/N ratio wastewater. However, there is currently a lack of a more systematic summary of iron-based materials that can be used for denitrification, and no detailed overview about the mechanism of iron mediated autotrophic denitrification has been reported. In this study, the iron materials with different valence states that can be used for denitrification were summarized, and emphasized, as well as the mechanism in different interaction systems were emphasize. In addition, the contribution of various microorganisms in nitrate reduction were analyzed and the effects of operating conditions and water quality were evaluated. Finally, the challenges and shortcomings of the denitrification process were discussed aiming to find better practical engineering applications of iron-based denitrification.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics by Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles. Tetracycline Case

The challenges associated with the uncontrolled presence of antibiotics such as tetracycline in the environment have necessitated their removal through different techniques. Tetracycline is hard to degrade in living organisms and can even be converted to more toxic substances. In view of this, we synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles with good magnetization (70 emu g−1) and 15 nm particle size for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline. Characterization carried out on the synthesized iron oxides revealed a bandgap of 1.83 eV and an isoelectric point at pH 6.8. The results also showed that the pH of the solution does not directly influence the adsorption of tetracycline. The adsorption isotherm was consistent with the model proposed by Langmuir, having 97 mg g−1 adsorption capacity. Combined with the superparamagnetic behavior, this capacity is advantageous for the magnetic extraction of tetracycline from wastewater. The mechanisms of adsorption were proposed to be hydrogen bonding and n-π interactions. Photocatalytic degradation studies showed that approximately 40% of tetracycline degraded within 60 min of irradiation time with UV/vis light. The kinetics of photodegradation of tetracycline followed the pseudo-first-order mechanism, proceeding through hydroxyl radicals generated under illumination. Moreover, the photogenerated hydrogen peroxide could lead to heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes on the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles, additionally generating hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals and facilitating photodegradation of tetracycline.

In vivo MRI assessment of bioactive magnetic iron oxide/human serum albumin nanoparticle delivery into the posterior segment of the eye in a rat model of retinal degeneration

Background

Retinal degeneration diseases affect millions of patients worldwide and lead to incurable vision loss. These diseases are caused by pathologies in the retina and underlying choroid, located in the back of the eye. One of the major challenges in the development of treatments for these blinding diseases is the safe and efficient delivery of therapeutics into the back of the eye. Previous studies demonstrated that narrow size distribution core–shell near infra-red fluorescent iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs) coated with human serum albumin (HSA, IO/HSA NPs) increase the half-life of conjugated therapeutic factors, suggesting they may be used for sustained release of therapeutics. In the present study, the in vivo tracking by MRI and the long term safety of IO/HSA NPs delivery into the suprachoroid of a rat model of retinal degeneration were assessed.

Results

Twenty-five Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) pigmented rats received suprachoroidal injection of 20-nm IO/HSA NPs into the right eye. The left eye was not injected and used as control. Animals were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroretinogram (ERG) and histology up to 30 weeks following injection. IO/HSA NPs were detected in the back part of the rats’ eyes up to 30 weeks following injection by MRI, and up to 6 weeks by histology. No significant differences in retinal structure and function were observed between injected and non-injected eyes. There was no significant difference in the weight of IO/HSA NP-injected animals compared to non-injected rats.

Conclusions

MRI could track the nanoparticles in the posterior segment of the injected eyes demonstrating their long-term persistence, and highlighting the possible use of MRI for translational studies in animals and in future clinical studies. Suprachoroidal injection of IO/HSA NPs showed no sign of adverse effects on retinal structure and function in a rat model of retinal degeneration, suggesting that suprachoroidal delivery of IO/HSA NPs is safe and that these NPs may be used in future translational and clinical studies for extended release drug delivery at the back of the eye.

Amine functional magnetic nanoparticles via waterborne thiol-ene suspension photopolymerization for antibody immobilization

The modification of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via different routes for biomolecule binding is an attractive area of research. Waterborne thiol-ene suspension photopolymerization (TESP) can be a useful method for preparing functional MNPs. In this study, for the very first time waterborne TESP was performed in the presence of MNPs. Neat MNPs were coated and in situ functionalized with amine groups by using thiol-ene chemistry. Engrailed-2 (EN2) protein, a potential biomarker for various cancers such as prostate cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer, is known to be a strong binder to a specific DNA sequence (50-TAATTA-30) to regulate transcription. Anti-EN2 antibodies were immobilized onto these MNPs by physical adsorption and covalent bonding methods, respectively. The amount of the physically immobilized antibodies (0.54 mg/g) were found to be lower than the loading of the covalently bonded antibodies (1.775 mg/g). The biomarker level in the artificial solutions prepared was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Coated MNPs were characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM and STEM. After TESP, the average diameter of the neat magnetite nanoparticles increased from ∼15 nm to ∼32 nm.

Engineering of Superparamagnetic Core-Shell Iron Oxide/N-Chloramine Nanoparticles for Water Purification

In this study, we describe the synthesis and characterization of superparamagnetic core-shell iron oxide (IO)/N-halamine antibacterial nanoparticles (NPs). For this purpose, superparamagnetic IO core NPs were coated with cross-linked polymethacrylamide (PMAA) by surfactant-free dispersion copolymerization of methacrylamide and N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) in an aqueous continuous phase. The effect of the polymerization process on the chemical composition, size, shape, crystallinity, and magnetic properties of the IO/PMAA NPs was elucidated. Conversion of the core-shell IO/PMAA NPs into their N-halamine form, IO/PMAA-Cl, was accomplished using a chlorination reaction with sodium hypochlorite. The influence of chlorination on the shape, crystallinity, and magnetic properties of the IO/PMAA NPs was studied. The IO/PMAA-Cl NPs demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Finally, the chlorination recharging capabilities of the NPs and their potential for use in the purification of water containing bacteria were demonstrated with magnetic columns packed with the IO/PMAA-Cl NPs.

Synthesis, characteristics and sonocatalytic activities of calcined γ-Fe2O3 and TiO2 nanotubes/γ-Fe2O3 magnetic catalysts in the degradation of Orange G

In this work, γ-Fe2O3 and TiO2 NTs/γ-Fe2O3 composites with good magnetism and sonocatalytic activity were prepared by a facile polyol method and utilize the principle of isoelectric point method, respectively. The structural and magnetic features of the prepared calcined γ-Fe2O3 and composite catalysts were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface analysis, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and zeta potential analysis. The effects of calcination temperature on γ-Fe2O3 phase variation, physical properties and sonocatalytic properties were investigated. The porosity, specific surface area, band gap energy and sonocatalytic activity of γ-Fe2O3 were gradually decreased with calcination temperature increased. TiO2 NTs/γ-Fe2O3 with appropriate composition and specific structural features possess synergetic effects such as efficient separation of charge carriers and hydroxyl radicals produced by heterogeneous fenton and fenton-like reactions. This enhanced the sonocatalytic activity for the degradation of Orange G under ultrasonic irradiation. The sonocatalytic reactions obeyed pseudo first-order kinetics. All these information provide insight into the design and development of high-efficiency catalyst for wastewater treatment.

Engineering of Iron-Based Magnetic Activated Carbon Fabrics for Environmental Remediation

Magnetic Fe₃O₄, Fe and Fe/Pd nanoparticles embedded within the pores of activated carbon fabrics (ACF) were prepared by impregnation of the ACF in iron acetylacetanoate (Fe(acac)₃) ethanol solution, followed by thermal decomposition of the embedded iron precursor at 200, 400 and 600 °C in an inert atmosphere. The effect of the annealing temperature on the chemical composition, shape, crystallinity, surface area, pore volume, and magnetic properties of the various functionalized ACF was elucidated. The Fe nanoparticles within the ACF were also doped with tinier Pd nanoparticles, by impregnation of the Fe/ACF in palladium acetate ethanol solution. The potential use of the functionalized ACF for removal of a model azo-dye, orange II, was demonstrated. This study illustrated the enhanced removal of the dye from an aqueous solution according to the following order: Fe/Pd/ACF > Fe/ACF > ACF. In addition, the enhanced activity of Fe₃O₄/ACF in the presence of increasing concentrations of H₂O₂ (Fenton catalysts) was also illustrated.

Bioactive magnetic near Infra-Red fluorescent core-shell iron oxide/human serum albumin nanoparticles for controlled release of growth factors for augmentation of human mesenchymal stem cell growth and differentiation

Background

Iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs) of sizes less than 50 nm are considered to be non-toxic, biodegradable and superparamagnetic. We have previously described the generation of IO NPs coated with Human Serum Albumin (HSA). HSA coating onto the IO NPs enables conjugation of the IO/HSA NPs to various biomolecules including proteins. Here we describe the preparation and characterization of narrow size distribution core-shell NIR fluorescent IO/HSA magnetic NPs conjugated covalently to Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 (FGF2) for biomedical applications. We examined the biological activity of the conjugated FGF2 on human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs). These multipotent cells can differentiate into bone, cartilage, hepatic, endothelial and neuronal cells and are being studied in clinical trials for treatment of various diseases. FGF2 enhances the proliferation of hBM-MSCs and promotes their differentiation toward neuronal, adipogenic and osteogenic lineages in vitro.

Results

The NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Covalent conjugation of the FGF2 to the IO/HSA NPs significantly stabilized this growth factor against various enzymes and inhibitors existing in serum and in tissue cultures. IO/HSA NPs conjugated to FGF2 were internalized into hBM-MSCs via endocytosis as confirmed by flow cytometry analysis and Prussian Blue staining. Conjugated FGF2 enhanced the proliferation and clonal expansion capacity of hBM-MSCs, as well as their adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation to a higher extent compared with the free growth factor. Free and conjugated FGF2 promoted the expression of neuronal marker Microtubule-Associated Protein 2 (MAP2) to a similar extent, but conjugated FGF2 was more effective than free FGF2 in promoting the expression of astrocyte marker Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) in these cells.

Conclusions

These results indicate that stabilization of FGF2 by conjugating the IO/HSA NPs can enhance the biological efficacy of FGF2 and its ability to promote hBM-MSC cell proliferation and trilineage differentiation. This new system may benefit future therapeutic use of hBM-MSCs.

Engineered magnetic core-shell SiO2/Fe microspheres and "medusa-like" microspheres of SiO2/iron oxide/carbon nanofibers or nanotubes

Iron oxide (IO) thin coatings of controlled thickness on SiO2 microspheres of narrow size distribution were prepared by decomposition at 160 °C of triiron dodecacarbonyl onto silica microspheres dispersed in diethylene glycol diethyl ether free of surfactant or stabilizer. The dried washed SiO2/IO core-shell microspheres were annealed at different temperatures and time periods under inert (Ar) or reducing (H2) atmosphere. The effect of temperature on the chemical composition, morphology, crystallinity, and magnetic properties of the IO and the elemental Fe nanoparticles type coatings onto the SiO2 core microspheres has been elucidated. "Medusa-like" SiO2/IO/carbon nanofibers and tubes particles were prepared by CVD of ethylene on the surface of the SiO2/IO microspheres at different temperatures. The morphology change of the grafted carbon nanofibers and tubes as a function of the CVD temperature was also elucidated.

Selenium(IV) uptake by maghemite (γ-Fe2O3)

The mechanism of selenium(IV) uptake by maghemite was investigated on both the macroscopic and the molecular level. Maghemite nanoparticles exhibited fast adsorption kinetics toward selenium(IV). Batch experiments showed a decreased sorption with increasing pH (3.5-11). Ionic strength variations (0.01 to 0.1 M NaCl) had no significant influence on selenium(IV) uptake. Electrophoretic mobility measurements revealed a significant shift toward lower values of the isoelectric point of maghemite upon selenium(IV) uptake, suggesting the formation of inner-sphere surface complexes. At the molecular level, using X-ray Absorption Fine-Structure Spectroscopy (EXAFS), the formation of both bidentate binuclear corner-sharing ((2)C) and bidentate mononuclear edge-sharing ((1)E) inner-sphere surface complexes was observed, with a trend toward solely (1)E complexes at high pH. The absence of a tridentate surface complex as observed for arsenic(III) and antimonite(III) might be due to the relatively small size of the Se(IV)O3 unit. These new spectroscopic results can be implemented in reactive transport models to improve the prediction of selenium migration behavior in the environment as well as its monitoring through its interaction with maghemite or maghemite layers at the surface of magnetite. Due to its chemical stability even at low pH and its magnetization properties allowing magnetic separation, maghemite is a promising sorbing phase for the treatment of Se polluted waters.

T1-T2 Dual-modal MRI contrast agents based on superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with surface attached gadolinium complexes

Dual-mode MRI contrast agents consisting of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) cores and gadolinium ions associated with the ionic chitosan protecting layer were synthesized and studied. Gadolinium ions were introduced into the coating layer via direct complex formation on the nanoparticles surface, covalent attachment or electrostatically driven deposition of the preformed Gd complex. The modified SPIONs having hydrodynamic diameters ca. 100 nm form stable, well-defined dispersions in water and have excellent magnetic properties. Physiochemical properties of those new materials were characterized using e.g., FTIR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray fluorescence, TEM, and vibrating sample magnetometry. They behave as superparamagnetics and shorten both T₁ and T₂ proton relaxation times, thus influencing both r₁ and r₂ relaxivity values that reach 53.7 and 375.5 mM^-1 s^-1, respectively, at 15 MHz. The obtained materials can be considered as highly effective contrast agents for low-field MRI, particularly useful at permanent magnet-based scanners.

Preparation and Characterization of Nanocomposite Microspheres of Polystyrene and Fe3O4 by Emulsifier-Free Emulsion Polymerization

Composite microspheres of polystyrene and nanoFe3O4 particles were prepared through emulsifier-free polymerization with ultrasonic dispersion. The properties of composite microsphere were investigated by FT-IR spectrum, X-ray diffraction analysis, TEM, SEM and VSM. The determine results showed that Fe3O4particles prepared by coprecipitation in lab were about 7~8 nm and with a narrow size distribution and superparamagnetic characteristics. The composite microsphere of polystyrene and Fe3O4showed a diameter around 20~30 nm under TEM and SEM. The data of XRD indicated crystal forms of Fe3O4in the composite microsphere did not change. The XRD spectrum of composite microsphere was a overlap of Fe3O4crystal and amorphous polystyrene. The result of hysteresis curve indicated that the composite microspheres still had superparamagnetic characteristics.

Surface modification of iron oxide nanoparticles by biocompatible polymers for tissue imaging and targeting

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are excellent MR contrast agents when coated with biocompatible polymers such as hydrophilic synthetic polymers, proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids, which improve their stability and biocompatibility and reduce their aggregation. Various biocompatible materials, coated or conjugated with targeting moieties such as galactose, mannose, folic acid, antibodies and RGD, have been applied to SPION surfaces to provide tissue specificity to hepatocytes, macrophages, and tumor regions in order to reduce non-specific uptake and improve biocompatibility. This review discusses the recent progress in the development of biocompatible and hydrophilic polymers for improving stability of SPIONs and describes the carbohydrates based biocompatible materials that are providing SPIONs with cell/tissue specificity as ligands.

Encapsulation of Silver Nanoparticles in a Polystyrene Matrix by Miniemulsion Polymerization and Its Antimicrobial Activity

Surface-modified silver nanoparticles (NAg) were encapsulated into a polystyrene (PS) matrix by in situ miniemulsion polymerization. Silver nanoparticles were modified with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) that acts as a coupling agent and costabilizer in the polymerization reaction. The PS-Nag nanocomposites synthesized via miniemulsion polymerization were made at two different concentrations of the initiator (0.7 and 2.5 g/L in H2O); at higher concentration of the initiator the conversion and efficiency of encapsulation increases, and the average particle size decreases. The PS-NAg composites showed excellent antimicrobial performance toward bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Enhancement of the growth and differentiation of nasal olfactory mucosa cells by the conjugation of growth factors to functional nanoparticles

Growth factors are critical components in the tissue engineering approach. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), a representative growth factor, stimulates the cellular functions of various cells and has been used extensively for the repair and regeneration of tissues. The in vivo half-life time of free bFGF is short, about 3-10 min, due to rapid enzymatic degradation. Stabilization of the bFGF was accomplished by the covalent or physical conjugation of this factor to fluorescent maghemite (γ-Fe(2)O(3)) nanoparticles. In the present study, nasal olfactory mucosa (NOM) cells from adult rats were cultured in suspension on chitosan microcarriers (MCs) in the presence of the nonconjugated or bFGF-conjugated nanoparticles, or the free factor. The floating cells/nonconjugated, conjugated, or free bFGF/MCs aggregates were then seeded in a viscous gel. In this manuscript, we are the first to report that the stabilization of the factor by its conjugation to these nanoparticles significantly improved NOM cell-proliferation properties (migration, growth, and differentiation), compared to the same concentration, or even five times higher, of the free factor. This novel approach may significantly contribute to the advancement of the tissue engineering field.

Preparation of chitosan-stabilized Fe(0) nanoparticles for removal of hexavalent chromium in water

Chitosan-stabilized Fe(0) nanoparticles (CTO-Fe(0)) and Fe(0) nanoparticles synthesized in ethanol-water mixed system (EW-Fe(0)) were tested for reduction of Cr(VI) in water. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) study suggested that nitrogen and oxygen atoms are the binding sites for chitosan on iron which was accountable for the stability of Fe(0) nanoparticles. While the EW-Fe(0) ignites spontaneously when exposed to air, the CTO-Fe(0) was still in zero valence state after exposure to air over 2-month period as shown by X-ray powder diffraction patterns. Batch experiments demonstrated that the maximum Cr(VI) reduction rates for CTO-Fe(0) was about 3 times higher than EW-Fe(0). Characterizations with high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS) revealed that Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) and Fe(III) was the only component present on the Fe(0) nanoparticles surface. Additionally, chitosan can inhibited the formation of Fe(III)-Cr(III) precipitation due to its high ability to chelate Fe(III) which resulted in k(obs) for CTO-Fe(0) was about 1-3 times higher than EW-Fe(0). Due to the fast reaction kinetics and good stability against oxidation in air, the chitosan-stabilized Fe(0) nanoparticles have the potential to become an effective agent for in situ subsurface environment remediation.

Synthesis and characterization of fluorinated magnetic core-shell nanoparticles for inhibition of insulin amyloid fibril formation

Maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) magnetic nanoparticles of 15.0 +/- 2.1 nm are formed by nucleation followed by controlled growth of maghemite thin films on gelatin-iron oxide nuclei. Uniform magnetic gamma-Fe2O3/poly (2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl acrylate) (gamma-Fe2O3/PHFBA) core-shell nanoparticles are prepared by emulsion polymerization of the fluorinated monomer 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl acrylate (HFBA) in the presence of the maghemite nanoparticles. The kinetics of the insulin fibrillation process in the absence and in the presence of the gamma-Fe2O3/PHFBA core-shell nanoparticles are elucidated. A significant direct slow transition from alpha-helix to beta-sheets during insulin fibril formation is observed in the presence of the gamma-Fe2O3/PHFBA nanoparticles. This is in contradiction to our previous manuscript, which illustrated that the gamma-Fe2O3 core nanoparticles do not affect the kinetics of the formation of the insulin fibrils, and to other previous publications that describe acceleration of the fibrillation process by using various types of nanoparticles. These core-shell nanoparticles may therefore be also useful for the inhibition of conformational changes of other amyloidogenic proteins that lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, mad cow and prion diseases.
