Abstract
Due to the ever increasing global population, higher volumes of industrial waste discharges to landfill have caused major problems for the environment. This study investigated the performance of rice straw ash (RSA) as a natural coagulant under different conditions for the treatment of landfill leachates by coagulation-flocculation and microfiltration, with and without addition of FeCl3. The highest performing treatment conditions (RSA = 2.48 g/L, FeCl3 = 4.98 g/L, settling time = 54.75min) were achieved with the combined use of RSA and FeCl3 as coagulant and led to a sludge volume index of 41.65 mL/g, 51.27% COD removal and 76.48% total suspended solid removal. In contrast, FeCl3 alone achieved slightly better COD and total suspended solid removal rates, however it resulted in higher sludge volume index and sludge production. The combined use of RSA and FeCl3 reduced the consumption of these two coagulants by 78.76% and 46.69% respectively. Functional groups and thermal stability of the flocs showed that RSA + FeCl3 synergistically enhance the mechanisms of the coagulation-flocculation process, including adsorption by particle's bridging, charge neutralization and size of flocs. Combining the coagulants resulted in increased van der Waals forces and lower attractive forces of the inter-colloidal energy barrier in the leachate. Additionally, the highest and lowest heavy metals removal rates for treatment by microfiltration were found for Fe (92.15%) and Mg (7.63%), with a total heavy metals removal efficiency in the range of 6.08-90.78%. The findings of this study show that RSA can serve as a natural eco-friendly coagulant both alone and in combination with FeCl3 in the leachate treatment.

Abstract
Bisphenols (bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol AF (BPAF)) are widely used as additives in numerous industries and therefore they are ubiquitously present throughout the world's natural environment including water. A review of the literature is presented on their sources, pathways of entry into the environment, and especially aquatic contexts, their toxicity to humans and other organisms and the technologies for removing them from water. The treatment technologies used are mostly adsorption, biodegradation, advanced oxidation, coagulation, and membrane separation processes. In the adsorption process, several adsorbents, especially carbon-based materials, have been tested. The biodegradation process has been deployed and it involves a variety of micro-organisms. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as UV/O3-based, catalysis relevant AOPs, electrochemical AOPs and physical AOPs have been employed. Both the biodegradation process and AOPs generate by-products which may be toxic. These by-products need to be subsequently removed using other treatment processes. Effectiveness of the membrane process varies depending on the porosity, charge, hydrophobicity, and other properties of the membrane. The problems and limitations of each treatment technique are discussed and methods to overcome them are presented. Suggestions are articulated to use a combination of processes to improve the removal efficiencies.

Abstract
In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been employed in numerous applications for adsorption. Researchers synthesize new MOFs by various methods, including the introduction of functional groups. In this study, three different aluminum-based MOFs (with non-functionalized, amino-functionalized, nitro-functionalized) were produced by hydrothermal synthesis and used for investigating typical endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), namely for bisphenol A (BPA) adsorption. We used several methods to characterize the MOFs and conducted batch adsorption experiments to investigate their adsorption properties, and explore the influence of different functional groups on adsorption materials. The specific surface area of Al-MOF-NH2 is 6 times larger than that of Al-MOF according to the N2 adsorption and desorption isotherms of the material, that is, the BET of Al-MOF, Al-MOF-NH2, and Al-MOF-NO2 were 109.68, 644.03, and 146.60 m2/g. Note that although the same synthesis method is used, pore size is greatly changed because of the different functional groups. Al-MOF and Al-MOF-NO2 have more mesopores, and Al-MOF-NH2 is mainly microporous. The BPA adsorption capacities of Al-MOF, Al-MOF-NH2, and Al-MOF-NO2 were 46.43, 227.78, and 155.84 mg/L. The outcomes can also be explained by the improved adsorption performance from the addition of amino functional groups. In this research, the adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics of the three Al-MOFs for BPA were also investigated to explain the different adsorption properties of various functional groups. The results show that the amino-functionalized materials have remarkable characterization morphologies, uniform particle distributions, appropriate particle sizes, excellent specific surface areas, and superior adsorption effects.

Abstract
In this study, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was used as the monomers for surface grafting on electrospun PU/RC nanofiber membrane via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method, and the PU/RC-poly(HEMA) nanofiber membrane was investigated as a carrier for LAC. Free and immobilized LAC was characterized, and efficiency of bisphenol A (BPA) removal was determined. The results indicated that the PU/RC-poly(HEMA)-LAC showed relatively higher pH stability, temperature stability, and storage stability than free and PU/RC-LAC; moreover, more than 60% of the PU/RC-poly(HEMA)-LAC activity was retained after 10 cycles of ABTS treatment. Notably, the BPA removal efficiency of PU/RC-poly(HEMA)-LAC membrane generally ranged from 87.3 to 75.4% for the five cycles. Therefore, the PU/RC-poly(HEMA) nanofiber membrane has great potential as a carrier for the LAC immobilization for various industrial applications and bioremediation.

Abstract
A novel wastewater treatment process, which couples chemically enhanced primary sedimentation (CEPS) of sewage with acidogenic fermentation of sludge in tandem, has recently been developed to improve the removal of pollutants and nutrients, and recover valuable resources such as phosphorus and organics. This study represented the first laboratory-based examination on the level and removal of the emerging contaminants, including retinoids (i.e., retinoic acids (RAs) and their metabolites) and oestrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs; e.g., 4-nonylphenol, bisphenol A, etc.), in sewage, sludge and its supernatant during this novel wastewater treatment process. The results showed that 65% of retinoids and 73% of EDCs were removed from sewage after aluminum (Al) based CEPS, while 80% of retinoids and 72% of EDCs were removed after iron (Fe) based CEPS. After acidogenic fermentation of the CEPS sludge, 50% and 58% of retinoids, and 50% and 47% of EDCs were further removed in the supernatants of Al-sludge and Fe-sludge, respectively. While there were comparable removals for these two classes of emerging contaminants during Al- and Fe-based CEPS and sludge fermentation, Fe-based CEPS of sewage and sludge fermentation should be preferentially considered, given the relatively lower production of Fe-sludge and lower accumulation of retinoids in Fe-sludge. The levels of retinoids and EDCs in the supernatant and sludge changed during acidogenic fermentation of Fe-sludge. The removals of at-4-oxo-RA (i.e., the dominant retinoid) and bisphenol A (i.e., the dominant EDC) in the supernatant followed the pseudo first-order reaction model, with a half-life of 1.62 days (in the first two days) and 1.55 days (in the whole experiment of seven days), respectively. The results demonstrated the effective removal of emerging contaminants from the sewage and the supernatant during the CEPS and acidogenic sludge fermentation.

Abstract
Al13 is the most active polymeric Al species responsible for coagulation at the solid-liquid interface, whereas the detection techniques for Al13 at the interface are currently limited. In this study, for the first time, the identification of Al13 on the silicon dioxide-based colloid surface was realized by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which is an ideal surface method sensitive for single-molecule detection. The high purity Al13 salts were prepared by an electrolysis procedure followed by precipitation or metathesis. Al13-Cln was determined to be feasible for the Raman detection as it exhibited more noticeable signals in comparison to Al13-(SO4)p and Al13-(NO3)m. The peak of Al13-Cln at 635 cm-1 could be the major characteristic peak of Al13, and the other two peaks at 300 and 987 cm-1 could be accessorial evidence for the identification. Further, the identification of Al13 adsorbed on the surface of Ag and gold-core/silica-shell colloids was confirmed by the SERS response at the above three wavenumbers with a higher signal-to-noise ratio than the normal Raman scattering. According to the least-squares fitting computed Raman spectra, each of the characteristic peaks was associated with specific vibrational modes.

Abstract
Aluminum can undergo hydrolysis in aqueous solutions leading to the formation of soluble molecular clusters, including polynuclear species that range from 1 to 2 nm in diameter. While the behavior of aluminum has been extensively investigated, much less is known about the hydrolysis of more complex mixed-metal systems. This study focuses on the structural characteristics of heterometallic thorium-aluminum molecular species that may have important implications for the speciation of tetravalent actinides in radioactive waste streams and environmental systems. Two mixed metal (Th(4+)/Al(3+)) polynuclear species have been synthesized under ambient conditions and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Th(2)Al(6)(OH)(14)(H(2)O)(12)(hedta)(2)](NO(3))(6)(H(2)O)(12) (ThAl1) crystallizes in space group P2(1)/c with unit cell parameters of a = 11.198(1) Å, b = 14.210(2) Å, c = 23.115(3) Å, and β = 96.375° and [Th(2)Al(8)(OH)(12)(H(2)O)(10)(hdpta)(4)](H(2)O)(21) (ThAl2) was modeled in P1 with a = 13.136(4) Å, b = 14.481(4) Å, c = 15.819(4) Å, α = 78.480(9)°, β = 65.666(8)°, γ = 78.272(8)°. Infrared spectra were collected on both compounds, confirming complexation of the ligand to the metal center, and thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal degradation of these compounds resulted in the formation of an amorphous product at high temperatures. These mixed metal species have topological relationships to previously characterized aluminum-based polynuclear species and may provide insights into the adsorption of tetravalent actinides on colloidal or mineral surfaces.
