Abstract
The use of processed limestone sludge as a crosslinking agent for films based on Na-alginate and ɩ-carrageenan/Na-alginate blends was studied. Sorbitol was tested as a plasticizer. The produced gel formulations included alginate/sorbitol and carrageenan/alginate/sorbitol mixtures, with tested sorbitol concentrations of 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 wt%. The limestone sludge waste obtained from the processing of quarried limestone was converted into an aqueous solution of Ca2+ by dissolution with mineral acid. This solution was then diluted in water and used to induce gel crosslinking. The necessity of using sorbitol as a component of the crosslinking solution was also assessed. The resulting films were characterized regarding their dimensional stability, microstructure, chemical structure, mechanical performance and antifungal properties. Alginate/sorbitol films displayed poor dimensional stability and were deemed not viable. Carrageenan/alginate/sorbitol films exhibited higher dimensional stability and smooth and flat surfaces, especially in compositions with 0.5 wt% sorbitol. However, an increasing amount of plasticizer appears to result in severe surface cracking, the development of a segregation phenomenon affecting carrageenan and an overall decrease in films' mechanical resistance. Although further studies regarding film composition-including plasticizer fraction, film optimal thickness and film/mold material interaction-are mandatory, the attained results show the potential of the reported ɩ-carrageenan/alginate/sorbitol films to be used towards the development of viable films derived from algal polysaccharides.

Abstract
In aqueous solutions, cetyltrimethylammonium cations bind to carrageenan polyanions, and the resulting ionic associates form macroscopic aggregates due to hydrophobic interaction. At certain ratios of cetyltrimethylammonium to carrageenan, the resulting colloidal particles auto-flocculate. According to visual observations, the ratio ranges from 1 to 3 mmol/g; otherwise the suspensions are stable. By measuring the sedimentation rate and particle size distribution, the most extensive flocculation was found to be from 1.7 to 2.3 mmol/g. The ratio corresponding to the fastest auto-flocculation was precisely determined by titrating the reagents with small increments and recording the turbidity. The turbidimetric titration plots contain distinct break points corresponding to the most extensive flocculation. These break points occur at the same ratio of carrageenan to cetyltrimethylammonium over a wide range of reagent concentrations. The precise values of the critical ratio were found to be 1.78 and 1.53 mmol/g, respectively, during the titration of cetyltrimethylammonium with carrageenan and vice versa. The number of anionic sulfate groups in carrageenan was measured by ICP OES and found to be 1.35 mmol/g. This value is consistent with the critical ratio of the auto-flocculation.

Abstract
The purple basil leaf extract (PBLE) was encapsulated in double emulsion (W1/O/W2)-loaded beads (emulgel) by electrospraying. The influence of κ-carrageenan (κ-CG) and cross-linking agents (Ca2+/K+) on the properties of alginate (SA) beads were assessed. In emulgel beads, κ-CG inclusion resulted in larger sizes and more distorted shapes, wrinkles on the surface, and lower gel strength. The encapsulation efficiency of anthocyanins (ACNs) in emulgel beads ranged from 70.73 to 87.89 %, whereas it ranged from 13.50 to 20.67 % in emulsion-free (hydrogel) beads. Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) revealed the crosslinking of SA and κ-CG with Ca2+ and K+, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative thermogravimetric (DTG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms showed emulgel beads yielded higher thermal stability. The emulgel beads elevated the in vitro bioaccessibility of ACNs under simulated digestion. At the gastric phase, 86 % of ACNs in PBLE, and 46 % of loaded ACNs in hydrogel beads were released, whereas no release was occurred in emulgel beads. At the intestinal phase, after 150 min of digestion, no ACNs were detected in PBLE and hydrogel beads, whereas all emulgel beads continued to release ACNs until 300 min. The incorporation of double emulsions in hydrogel beads can be utilized in the development of functional foods.

Abstract
The goal of the study was to look into drug-polyelectrolyte complexation between ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and λ-carrageenan (CRG), and to employ the complex as a sustained-release matrix. The maximum binding capacity of the complexation was determined using the dialysis bag method and employed to prepare the complex. In comparison to Cipro, CRG, and their physical mixing, the complex was examined using differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Cipro-CRG matrices, manufactured as direct compression tablets based on the greatest binding capacity, were assessed for swelling, erosion and drug release in 0.1 M HCl, in comparison with those of CRG, Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and Cipro-HPMC matrices. In vivo absorption study comparing the Cipro-CRG matrix to Cipro immediate-release tablet was also carried out. The greatest binding capacity of Cipro to CRG was 55% (w/w). Multiple interactions, including electrostatic interaction, Vander wall forces, and hydrogen bonding, have been proposed to be involved in complexation with drug amorphization. As a result of the complexation, the swelling and erosion properties of CRG changed, with Cipro-CRG matrix showing substantially less swelling and erosion than Cipro-free CRG matrix. Cipro-CRG matrix exhibited swelling and erosion similar to Cipro-HPMC matrix. However, the former matrix demonstrated Cipro release with significantly less burst impact and a significantly slower release rate. Furthermore, Cipro-CRG matrices in vivo demonstrated slow-prolonged oral drug absorption with consequent significant changes in pharmacokinetic parameters in comparison to those obtained for immediate-release tablets.

Abstract
In this article, iota-carrageenan (IC) and kappa-carrageenan (KC) are used as dopants for the chemical and electrochemical synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy). The composites of chemically synthesized PPy with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared using an in situ technique. Both the dialyzed and non-dialyzed IC and KC were used as dopants for electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole. Chemically synthesized PPy and PPy/MWNTs composites were studied by ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectra to investigate the effect of the concentration and the incorporation of MWNTs. In addition, the electrical, thermal, mechanical, and microscopic characterizations of these films were performed to examine the effect of the dopants and MWNTs on these properties, along with their surface morphology. The films of electrochemically polymerized PPy were characterized using UV-Vis absorption spectra, scanning electron microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results were then compared with the chemical polymerized PPy.

Abstract
A novel concept for the synthesis of a stable polymer hybrid matrix bead was developed in this study. The beads were further applied for enzyme immobilization to produce stable and active biocatalysts with low enzyme leakage, and high immobilization efficiency, enzyme activity, and recyclability. The immobilization conditions, including PEI concentration, activation time and pH of the PEI solution were investigated and optimized. All formulated beads were characterized for its functionalized groups, composition, surface morphology and thermal stability. Compared with the free β-glucosidase, the immobilized β-glucosidase on the hybrid matrix bead was able to tolerate broader range of pH values and higher reaction temperature up to 60 °C. The immobilized β-glucosidase was then used to hydrolyse pretreated macroalgae cellulosic residue (MCR) for the production of reducing sugar and a hydrolysis yield of 73.4% was obtained. After repeated twelve runs, immobilized β-glucosidase retained about 75% of its initial activity.

Abstract
Polymer-surfactant complexes formed between charged copolymers and oppositely charged surfactants are analyzed as a function of the charge density in the macromolecule. Copolymers of ionizable diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) and neutral acrylamide are obtained at different comonomer ratios. When mixed with the lamellar medium formed by the anionic surfactant 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) in water, they give rise to highly condensed lamellar phases in equilibrium with another lyotropic phase. The structure of these phases is studied by SAXS and optical microscopy revealing the formation of copolymer-surfactant complexes which present a lamellar structure. The composition of the phases is inaccessible to direct determination, because they do not separate macroscopically (in most of the samples). Thus, the stoichiometry is determined using a model which considers the charge density of the copolymers. This model allows, from the experimental data provided by SAXS, to calculate the composition and volume ratio of the phases. The results indicate that these complexes are nonstoichiometric, containing a lesser amount of DADMAC than surfactant units. The neutral sequences of acrylamide can be considered as bridges along the water domains remaining anchored to the AOT bilayers by the cationic DADMAC units. When the charge density diminishes, the bridges become longer, rendering structures with higher water content.

Abstract
Black carbon (BC) particles were removed from experimental flue gas by the surfactant solutions of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether-9 (AEO-9) and polyoxy ethrlene nonyl phinyl ether-10 (TX-10), as well as AEO-9-SDBS, AEO-9-CTAB and SDBS-CTAB, in a new type of umbrella plate scrubber. Among the four independent surfactants, AEO-9 has the lowest surface tension, 35.9 mN/m, which resulted in the highest BC removal ratio among the alone surfactants. The experimental conditions were as follows: dust concentration = 3000 mg/m3; gas velocity = 14 m/s; liquid-gas ratio = 0.80 l/m3; and gas flow = 400 m3/h. When the mole ratio of the mixed surfactants was 1:1, the lowest surface tension could be detected among the studied mixed surfactants. According to the molecular interaction parameters (beta) and the mole ratio of surfactant 1 in the mixture (x1), the synergistic effects of AEO-9-SDBS and SDBS-CTAB solutions were obviously higher than those of AEO-9-TX-10 and AEO-9-CTAB. Therefore, AEO-9-SDBS solution had the lowest surface tension among the mixtures due to its beta < 0 and x1 = 0.85. The mixture solution of AEO-9-SDBS (1:1 mole ratio, 0.2 mmol/l) yielded the highest BC removal ratio, about 99.8%, and it was about 12% higher than that of only water, which was about 87.9%. The calculated critical micelle concentration was almost the same as that of the experimental concentration when the related equation was corrected by beta.
