A review on bismuth-based nanocomposites for energy and environmental applications

Bismuth, a heavy metal which is found to be inexpensive and at a reduced cost, is utilized in the synthesis of different nanomaterials with novel structure, remarkable physical and chemical properties, adjustable bandgap, notable efficiency for photothermal conversion. These characteristics have made this element desirable for various applications such as storage and conversion of energy, electronics, sensors, photocatalysis, and other biomedical applications. These review papers are the vital points for the students, this report guides them to the research papers which focus on the impressive development in the area of bismuth and similar nanostructures. The purpose of the present review is to discuss the various synthesis routes of bismuth-based nanomaterials along with green synthesis, different nanostructures of bismuth, their significant properties, diverse applications and directions for the upcoming research. Therefore, with these different tuneable synthesis methods of bismuth-based nanomaterials combined with their novel properties, would elucidate on the future devices based on various nanostructures of bismuth.

Two-Stage Targeted Bismuthene-Based Composite Nanosystem for Multimodal Imaging Guided Enhanced Hyperthermia and Inhibition of Tumor Recurrence

A key challenge for nanomedicines in clinical application is to reduce the dose while achieving excellent efficacy, which has attracted extensive attention in dose toxicity and potential risks. It is thus necessary to reasonably design nanomedicine with high-efficiency targeting and accumulation. Here, we designed and synthesized a tetragonal bismuthene-based "all-in-one" composite nanosystem (TPP-Bi@PDA@CP) with two-stage targeting, multimodal imaging, photothermal therapy, and immune enhancement functions. Through the elaborate design of its structure, the composite nanosystem possesses multiple properties including (i) two-stage targeting function of hepatoma cells and mitochondria [the aggregation at the tumor site is 2.63-fold higher than that of traditional enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect]; (ii) computed tomography (CT) contrast-enhancement efficiency as high as ∼51.8 HU mL mg^-1 (3.16-fold that of the clinically available iopromide); (iii) ultrahigh photothermal conversion efficiency (52.3%, 808 nm), promising photothermal therapy (PTT), and high-contrast infrared thermal (IRT)/photoacoustic (PA) imaging of tumor; (iv) benefitting from the two-stage targeting function and excellent photothermal conversion ability, the dose used in this strategy is one of the lowest doses in hyperthermia (the inhibition rate of tumor cells was 50% at a dose of 15 μg mL^-1 and 75% at a dose of 25 μg mL^-1); (v) the compound polysaccharide (CP) shell with hepatoma cell targeting and immune enhancement functions effectively inhibited the recurrence of tumor. Therefore, our work reduces the dose toxicity and potential risk of nanomedicines and highlights the great potential as an all-in-one theranostic nanoplatform for two-stage targeting, integrated diagnostic imaging, photothermal therapy, and inhibition of tumor recurrence.

Green synthesis of crystalline bismuth nanoparticles using lemon juice

Lemon juice effectively served as a reducing and capping agent for an easy, cost-effective, and green synthesis of crystalline bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) in basic aqueous media. Spherical BiNPs with a rhombohedral crystalline structure are capped by phytochemicals and stably dispersible in aqueous media. The BiNPs effectively catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by NaBH₄.

Bi2O3 nano-flakes as a cost-effective antibacterial agent

Bismuth oxide is an important bismuth compound having applications in electronics, photo-catalysis and medicine. At the nanoscale, bismuth oxide experiences a variety of new physico-chemical properties because of its increased surface to volume ratio leading to potentially new applications. In this manuscript, we report for the very first time the synthesis of bismuth oxide (Bi₂O₃) nano-flakes by pulsed laser ablation in liquids without any external assistance (no acoustic, electric field, or magnetic field). The synthesis was performed by irradiating, pure bismuth needles immerged in de-ionized water, at very high fluence ∼160 J cm^-2 in order to be highly selective and only promote the growth of two-dimensional structures. The x- and y-dimensions of the flakes were around 1 μm in size while their thickness was 47.0 ± 12.7 nm as confirmed by AFM analysis. The flakes were confirmed to be α- and γ-Bi₂O₃ by SAED and Raman spectroscopy. By using this mixture of flakes, we demonstrated that the nanostructures can be used as antimicrobial agents, achieving a complete inhibition of Gram positive (MSRA) and Gram negative bacteria (MDR-EC) at low concentration, ∼50 ppm.

Journey of ZnO quantum dots from undoped to rare-earth and transition metal-doped and their applications

Currently, developments in the field of quantum dots (QDs) have attracted researchers worldwide. A large variety of QDs have been discovered in the few years, which have excellent optoelectronic, antibacterial, magnetic, and other properties. However, ZnO is the single known material that can exist in the quantum state and can hold all the above properties. There is a lot of work going on in this field and we will be shorthanded if we do not accommodate this treasure at one place. This manuscript will prove to be a milestone in this noble cause. Having a tremendous potential, there is a developing enthusiasm toward the application of ZnO QDs in diverse areas. Sol-gel method being the simplest is the widely-favored synthetic method. Synthesis via this method is largely affected by a number of factors such as the reaction temperature, duration of the reaction, type of solvent, pH of the solution, and the precipitating agent. Doping enhances the optical, magnetic, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and other properties of ZnO QDs. However, doping elements reside mostly on the surface of the QDs. The presence of doping elements inside the core is still a major challenge for doping techniques. In this review article, we have focused on pure, rare-earth, and transition metal-doped ZnO QD properties, and the various synthetic processes and applications. Quantum confinement effect is present in nearly every aspect of the QDs. The effect of quantum confinement has also been summarized in this manuscript. Furthermore, the doping of rare earth elements and transition metal, synthetic methods for different organic molecule-capped ZnO QDs, mechanisms for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, drug delivery system for cancer treatment, and many more application are discussed in this paper.

Facile Aqueous-Phase Synthesis of an Ultrasmall Bismuth Nanocatalyst for the Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Bismuth metallic nanoparticles have evoked considerable interest in catalysis owing to their small size, high surface area-to-volume ratio, and low toxicity. However, the need for toxic reductants and organic solvents in their synthesis often limits their desirability for application development. Here, we describe a green strategy to synthesize bismuth nanodots via the redox reactions between bismuth nitrate and d-glucose, in the presence of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) in the basic aqueous phase. Both reagents play a crucial role in the formation of monodisperse bismuth nanodots acting as mild reducing and capping agents, respectively. We further demonstrate that the catalytic activity of these dots via the successful reduction of the environmental contaminant 4-nitrophenol to its useful 4-aminophenol analogue requiring only 36 μg/mL nanocatalyst for 20 mM of the substrate. Moreover, they can be recovered and recycled in multiple reactions before the onset of an appreciable loss of catalytic activity. The proposed facile synthetic route and inexpensive matrix materials lead the way to access bismuth nanodots for both the fundamental study of reactions and their industrial catalysis applications.

Laser Synthesis and Processing of Colloids: Fundamentals and Applications

Driven by functionality and purity demand for applications of inorganic nanoparticle colloids in optics, biology, and energy, their surface chemistry has become a topic of intensive research interest. Consequently, ligand-free colloids are ideal reference materials for evaluating the effects of surface adsorbates from the initial state for application-oriented nanointegration purposes. After two decades of development, laser synthesis and processing of colloids (LSPC) has emerged as a convenient and scalable technique for the synthesis of ligand-free nanomaterials in sealed environments. In addition to the high-purity surface of LSPC-generated nanoparticles, other strengths of LSPC include its high throughput, convenience for preparing alloys or series of doped nanomaterials, and its continuous operation mode, suitable for downstream processing. Unscreened surface charge of LSPC-synthesized colloids is the key to achieving colloidal stability and high affinity to biomolecules as well as support materials, thereby enabling the fabrication of bioconjugates and heterogeneous catalysts. Accurate size control of LSPC-synthesized materials ranging from quantum dots to submicrometer spheres and recent upscaling advancement toward the multiple-gram scale are helpful for extending the applicability of LSPC-synthesized nanomaterials to various fields. By discussing key reports on both the fundamentals and the applications related to laser ablation, fragmentation, and melting in liquids, this Article presents a timely and critical review of this emerging topic.

Non-noble metal plasmonic photocatalysis in semimetal bismuth films for photocatalytic NO oxidation

Field enhancement and location of plasmonic resonance peaks are strongly correlated with the size of Bi particles. The low energy barrier for the conversion of NO to NO₂ and low NO₂ desorption energy over Bi particles indicate that Bi films are very active for photocatalytic oxidation of NO and possess good stability.

Thioglycolic Acid-Capped CdS Quantum Dots Conjugated to α-Amylase as a Fluorescence Probe for Determination of Starch at Low Concentration

In the present research, water soluble thioglycolic acid-capped CdS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized by chemical precipitation method. The characteristics of prepared quantum dots were determined using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The obtained results revealed that CdS QDs have 5.60 nm crystallite size, hexagonal wurtzite structure and spherical morphology with less than 10 nm diameter. The photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was performed in order to study the effect of the presence of starch solutions. Blue emission peaks were positioned at 488 nm and its intensity quenched by increasing the concentration of starch solutions. The result of PL quenches in range of studied concentrations (0-100 ppm) was best described by Michaelis-Menten model. The amount of Michaelis constant (Km) for immobilized α-amylase in this system was about 68.08 ppm which showed a great tendency of enzyme to hydrolyze the starch as substrate. Finally, the limit of detection (LOD) was found to be about 2.24 ppm.
