Morphology and mobility of synthetic colloidal aggregates

New Insights into the Formation of Aggregates of Bidisperse Nano- and Microplastics in Water Based on the Analysis of In Situ Microscopy and Molecular Simulation

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in water pose a global threat to human health and the environment. To develop efficient removal strategies, it is crucial to understand how these particles behave as they aggregate. However, our knowledge of the process of aggregate formation from primary particles of different sizes is limited. In this study, we analyzed the growth kinetics and structures of aggregates formed by polystyrene MPs in mono- and bidisperse systems using in situ microscopy and image analysis. Our findings show that the scaling behavior of aggregate growth remains unaffected by the primary particle size distribution, but it does delay the onset of rapid aggregation. We also performed a structural analysis that reveals the power law dependence of aggregate fractal dimension (df) in both mono- and bidisperse systems, with mean df consistent with diffusion-limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) aggregates. Our results also suggest that the df of aggregates is insensitive to the shape anisotropy. We simulated molecular forces driving aggregation of polystyrene NPs of different sizes under high ionic strength conditions. These conditions represent salt concentration in ocean water and wastewater, where the DLVO theory does not apply. Our simulation results show that the aggregation tendency of the NPs increases with the ionic strength. The increase in the aggregation is caused by the depletion of clusters of ions from the NPs surface.

Polarity of Cationic Lignin Polymers: Physicochemical Behavior in Aqueous Solutions and Suspensions

The structure of cationic monomers can significantly impact the polarity of lignin after polymerization. Cationic hydrolysis lignin (CHL) polymers were produced by polymerizing hydrolysis lignin (HL) with [3-(methacryloylamino)propyl] trimethylammonium chloride (MAPTAC) or [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC). The METAC monomer has an oxygen atom, with larger electronegativity, in its molecular structure, whereas the MAPTAC monomer contains a nitrogen atom, as well as an extra nonpolar CH₂ group, facilitating investigation into the effects of the polarity of CHLs on their physicochemical performance in an aqueous system. CHL polymers are analyzed and their interactions with clay particles are determined in colloidal systems. CHLs are designed to have similar charge densities (2.1-2.2 mmol g^-1) and molecular weights (55000-60000 g mol^-1 ). The hydrodynamic radius (H_y) and radius of gyration, (R_g) of HL-METAC are larger than those of HL-MAPTAC, implying a more 3-dimensional structure of HL-METAC in aqueous solution. The stability ratio of kaolin particles affirms the better performance of HL-METAC in comparison to HL-MAPTAC, which reflects the better flocculation efficiency of HL-METAC. The results also reveal that salt and urea aqueous solutions affect the H_y, R_g, and configuration of CHL polymers, which alters the flocculation efficiency of HL-METAC and HL-MAPTAC polymers in kaolin suspensions.

Sedimentation of Fractal Aggregates in Shear-Thinning Fluids

Solid–liquid separation is a key unit operation in the wastewater treatment, generally consisting of coagulation and flocculation steps to promote aggregation and increase the particle size, followed by sedimentation, where the particles settle due to the effect of gravity. The sedimentation efficiency is related to the hydrodynamic behavior of the suspended particles that, in turn, depends on the aggregate morphology. In addition, the non-Newtonian rheology of sludges strongly affects the drag coefficient of the suspended particles, leading to deviations from the known settling behavior in Newtonian fluids. In this work, we use direct numerical simulations to study the hydrodynamic drag of fractal-shaped particles suspended in a shear-thinning fluid modeled by the power-law constitutive equation. The fluid dynamics governing equations are solved for an applied force with different orientations uniformly distributed over the unit sphere. The resulting particle velocities are interpolated to compute the aggregate dynamics and the drag correction coefficient. A remarkable effect of the detailed microstructure of the aggregate on the sedimentation process is observed. The orientational dynamics shows a rich behavior characterized by steady-state, bistable, and periodic regimes. In qualitative agreement with spherical particles, shear-thinning increases the drag correction coefficient. Elongated aggregates sediment more slowly than sphere-like particles, with a lower terminal velocity as the aspect ratio increases.

Rheology of a Dilute Suspension of Aggregates in Shear-Thinning Fluids

The prediction of the viscosity of suspensions is of fundamental importance in several fields. Most of the available studies have been focused on particles with simple shapes, for example, spheres or spheroids. In this work, we study the viscosity of a dilute suspension of fractal-shape aggregates suspended in a shear-thinning fluid by direct numerical simulations. The suspending fluid is modeled by the power-law constitutive equation. For each morphology, a map of particle angular velocities is obtained by solving the governing equations for several particle orientations. The map is used to integrate the kinematic equation for the orientation vectors and reconstruct the aggregate orientational dynamics. The intrinsic viscosity is computed by a homogenization procedure along the particle orbits. In agreement with previous results on Newtonian suspensions, the intrinsic viscosity, averaged over different initial orientations and aggregate morphologies characterized by the same fractal parameters, decreases by increasing the fractal dimension, that is, from rod-like to spherical-like aggregates. Shear-thinning further reduces the intrinsic viscosity showing a linear dependence with the flow index in the investigated range. The intrinsic viscosity can be properly scaled with respect to the number of primary particles and the flow index to obtain a single curve as a function of the fractal dimension.

Retarded hydrodynamic properties of fractal clusters

Fractal clusters are commonly encountered when working with the stability and the aggregation of colloidal suspensions. In spite of the number of studies that have focused on their stationary hydrodynamic properties, no information is currently known on their retarded hydrodynamic properties. The objective of this work is to close this gap. Clusters with a broad range of fractal dimension values, generated via Monte-Carlo simulations have been analyzed. A rigorous model based on multipole expansion of time-dependent Stokes equations has been developed, and then the full cluster resistance matrix as a function of the frequency has been computed. An attempt has been made to extend Basset, Boussinesque and Oseen equations to fractal clusters, but it was found that the corresponding hydrodynamic radius needs to be a function of frequency. In the case of translational motion, the cluster hydrodynamic radius loses any structural information at high frequencies, becoming independent of the fractal dimension, but depending only on its mass. A simplified model, based on an extension of Kirkwood-Rieseman approach has also been developed. This allows one to perform calculations for clusters with arbitrary masses and fractal dimensions, with good accuracy and very low computational time. It is the first time that the frequency dependence of hydrodynamic properties of complex non-spherical objects has been investigated.
