A small point regarding DLVO coagulation conditions

Tertiary treatment of a mixture of composting and landfill leachates using electrochemical processes

The study investigated the treatment efficiency of coupled electrocoagulation (EC) and electrooxidation (EO) processes for landfill leachate treatment in batch and continuous mode. The EC process (iron anode and graphite cathode) at 18.2 mA/cm² for 2.5 min resulted in COD, turbidity, total phosphorus, total coliforms and fecal coliforms removal of 58.1, 72.9, 98.5, 97.9, and 97.2% respectively. Under the same operating conditions, the coupled EC/EO (Ti-Pt anode, bipolar iron electrode, and graphite cathode) processes showed that the COD, turbidity, total phosphorus, total coliforms, and fecal coliforms removal of 56.5%, 78.3%, 96.3%, 97.2% and fecal coliforms 72.7%, respectively. The energy costs associated with the EC and EC/EO were 0.11 and 0.25 $/m³, respectively. Compared to the batch configuration, the continuous configuration of EC resulted in similar processing performance. However, the EC/EO process resulted in the production of chlorates, perchlorates, and trihalomethanes as by-products. Moreover, the continuous process slightly increases the pH and ammonia concentration of the leachate and also resulted in the metallic sludge production with an average dryness of 4.2%. The toxicity tests determined that the treated effluent was not toxic to Rainbow trout and Daphnia.

A Review of the Processes Associated with the Removal of Oil in Water Pollution

Water plays an essential role in production and refining processes. Many industries that use petrochemicals also require water, especially for cleaning purposes. The wastewaters released by these processes are often rich in petroleum pollutants, which requires significant treatment prior to disposal. The presence of petroleum contaminants in rivers and oceans is a significant threat to human health, as well as to many animal species. A current challenge for most industries and conventional effluent treatment plants is compliance with accepted disposal standards for oil-polluted wastewater. Of particular importance is the processing of dispersed oil in water, as well as oil in water emulsion. Conventional oil and water separation methods for processing oil in water contamination have several technology gaps in terms of applicability and efficiency. The removal and effective processing of dispersed oil and emulsions from oily wastewater is a costly and significant problem. The objective of this paper is to provide a review of the principles associated with oil in water emulsion separation, with the aim of providing a more definitive understanding of the terminology, processes, and methodologies, which will assist the development of a more efficient, innovative and environmentally friendly process for the separation of oily wastewater.

Multiscale dynamics of colloidal deposition and erosion in porous media

Diverse processes-e.g., environmental pollution, groundwater remediation, oil recovery, filtration, and drug delivery-involve the transport of colloidal particles in porous media. Using confocal microscopy, we directly visualize this process in situ and thereby identify the fundamental mechanisms by which particles are distributed throughout a medium. At high injection pressures, hydrodynamic stresses cause particles to be continually deposited on and eroded from the solid matrix-notably, forcing them to be distributed throughout the entire medium. By contrast, at low injection pressures, the relative influence of erosion is suppressed, causing particles to localize near the inlet of the medium. Unexpectedly, these macroscopic distribution behaviors depend on imposed pressure in similar ways for particles of different charges, although the pore-scale distribution of deposition is sensitive to particle charge. These results reveal how the multiscale interactions between fluid, particles, and the solid matrix control how colloids are distributed in a porous medium.

Optimizing the Synthesis of Monodisperse Colloidal Spheres Using Holographic Particle Characterization

Holographic particle characterization measures the sizes and compositions of individual colloidal particles dispersed in fluid media and rapidly amasses statistics on the distributions of these properties, even for complex heterogeneous dispersions. This information is useful for analyzing and optimizing protocols for synthesizing colloidal particles. We illustrate how holographic characterization can guide process design through a case study on a particularly versatile model system composed of an aqueous dispersion of micrometer-scale spheres synthesized from the organosilane monomer 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate.

Effects of Ionic Strength on the Colloidal Stability and Interfacial Assembly of Hydrophobic Ethyl Cellulose Nanoparticles

Nanoparticle attachment at a fluid interface is a process that often takes place concurrently with nanoparticle aggregation in the bulk of the suspension. Here we investigate systematically the coupling of these processes with reference to the adsorption of aqueous suspensions of ethyl cellulose (EC) nanoparticles at the air-water interface. The suspension stability is optimal at neutral pH and in the absence of salt, conditions under which the electrostatic repulsion among EC nanoparticles is maximized. Nonetheless, hydrophobic attraction dominates particle-interface interactions, resulting in the irreversible adsorption of EC nanoparticles at the air-water interface. The addition of salt weakens the particle-particle and particle-interface repulsive electrostatic forces. This leads to destabilization of the suspension at ionic strengths of 0.05 M or greater but does not affect nanoparticle adsorption. The energy of adsorption, the surface tension and interface coverage at steady state, and the particle contact angle at the interface all remain unchanged by the addition of salt. These findings contribute to the fundamental understanding of colloidal systems and inform the utilization of EC nanocolloids, in particular for the stabilization of foams and emulsions.
