Thermogravimetric Analysis of Moisture in Natural and Thermally Treated Clay Materials

Clays are a class of porous materials; their surfaces are naturally covered by moisture. Weak thermal treatment may be considered practical to remove the water molecules, changing the surface properties and making the micro- and/or mesoporosities accessible to interact with other molecules. Herein, a modulated thermogravimetric analysis (MTGA) study of the moisture behavior on the structures of five, both fibrous and laminar, clay minerals is reported. The effect of the thermal treatment at 150 °C, which provokes the release of weakly adsorbed water molecules, was also investigated. The activation energies for the removal of the adsorbed water (Ea) were calculated, and they were found to be higher, namely, from 160 to 190 kJ mol-1, for fibrous clay minerals compared to lamellar structures, ranging in this latter case from 80 to 100 kJ mol-1. The thermal treatment enhances the rehydration in Na-montmorillonite, stevensite, and sepiolite structures with a decrease in the energy required to remove it, while Ea increases significantly in palygorskite (from 164 to 273 kJ mol-1). As a proof of concept, the MTGA results are statistically correlated, together with a full characterization of the physico-chemical properties of the five clay minerals, with the adsorption of two molecules, i.e., aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and β-carotene. Herein, the amount of adsorbed molecules ranges from 12 to 97% for the former and from 22 to 35% for the latter, depending on the particular clay. The Ea was correlated with AFB1 adsorption with a Spearman score of -0.9. When the adsorbed water is forcibly removed, e.g., under vacuum conditions and high temperatures, the structure becomes the most important, decreasing the Spearman score between β-carotene and Ea to -0.6.

Characterization of Calcium- and Strontium-Polyphosphate Particles Toward Drug Delivery into Articular Cartilage

Drug delivery into articular cartilage poses many challenges due in part to its lack of vasculature. While intra-articular injections are effective for the local administration of drugs, small molecules are rapidly cleared from the synovial fluid. As such, there is a need to develop effective drug delivery strategies to improve the residence times of bioactive molecules in the joint and elicit a sustained therapeutic effect. In this study, calcium- and strontium-polyphosphate particles are synthesized and characterized as potential drug carriers into articular cartilage. Physicochemical characterization reveals that the particles exhibit a spherical morphology, have a negative zeta potential, and are nanoscale in size. Biological characterization in chondrocytes confirms cellular uptake of the particles and demonstrates both size and concentration-dependent cytotoxicity at high concentrations. Furthermore, treatment of chondrocytes with these particles results in a reduction in cell proliferation and metabolic activity, confirming biological effects. Finally, incubation with cartilage tissue explants suggests successful uptake, despite the particles exhibiting a negative surface charge. Therefore, from the results of this study, these polyphosphate-based particles have potential as a drug carrier into articular cartilage and warrant further development.

Tb- and Eu-doped yttrium oxyselenides as novel absorber layers for superstrate thin-film photovoltaics: improved spectral optical absorption and green-red phosphor activation

To generate and deliver alternative sustainable energy in the face of the current energy crisis, new materials that can capture solar energy and transform it into other useful energies are required. Rare-earth (RE) oxychalcogenides are now being used more frequently as up/down-conversion materials in established photovoltaic (PV) devices to boost their PV performance. Here, through an efficient microwave assisted synthesis procedure, novel nanoplate/sheet shaped nanomaterials of yttrium oxyselenide (YOSe) and its analogues doped with Tb and Eu (YOSe:Tb and YOSe:Eu) were successfully synthesized. Analyses of the structure, stability, morphology, light absorption, and electrochemistry were performed. This work showed that the parent YOSe exhibited green (543 nm) and red (615 nm) emission luminescence when doped with Tb and Eu with a luminescence quantum yield (LQY) of 0.56 and 0.53 for YOSe:Tb and YOSe:Eu nanomaterials, respectively. The surface and material conductivity of YOSe improved with the addition of the dopant elements, with the best outcome shown in YOSe:Eu, according to electrokinetic research evidenced by the enhanced current peaks, reduced charge-transfer resistance (Rct) and low impedance magnitude (Zmag) through electrochemical experiments. These improvements were induced by the distinctive properties of the dopant elements. PCEs of 0.25%, 0.67%, and 1.20% were obtained for YOSe, YOSe:Tb, and YOSe:Eu-based PV devices, respectively, using the nanomaterials as novel absorber layers in a superstrate device design. Our results can initiate further exploitation of the doped host structure for effective down-conversion NIR luminescence for applications in PV devices and to boost the PV performance of existing solar cells.

Aggregation kinetics of green tea nanoparticles: Effects of pH, metal ions, and temperature

Colloidal nanoparticles in tea infusion are the link connecting micromolecular mechanism and macro-aggregation process of tea cream formation. In order to elucidate, the kinetics mechanism of green tea nanoparticles (gTNPs) aggregation, zeta-potentials, total average aggregation (TAA) rates, and critical coagulation concentration (CCC) in the presence of various pH and metal ions were investigated. Additionally, the effect of temperature on gTNPs aggregation was further explored. The results revealed that the TAA rate of gTNPs increased with decreasing pH values, the CCC of gTNPs increased in the order Mg2+  ≈ Ca2+  < Na+  ≈ K+ . The reason was that different positive ions changed the surface electric field strength of gTNPs to a different extent. Furthermore, it was indicated that low temperature could promote gTNPs aggregation in indirect way. Low temperature promoted the binding of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and caffeine, and the combination between gTNPs and EGCG-caffeine complexes weakened the stability of gTNPs resulting from reduction in electrostatic repulsion. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Tea is a popular beverage all over the world. This research revealed the mechanism of green tea nanoparticles aggregation and laid a theoretical foundation for the regulation of tea cream formation in tea beverage.

Acid-Base Properties of Cis-Vacant Montmorillonite Edge Surfaces: A Combined First-Principles Molecular Dynamics and Surface Complexation Modeling Approach

Montmorillonite layer edge surfaces have pH-dependent properties, which arises from the acid-base reactivity of their surface functional groups. Edge surface acidity (with intrinsic reaction equilibrium constant, pKa) is a chemical property that is affected by crystal structure. While a cis-vacant structure predominates in natural montmorillonites, prior molecular-level studies assume a centrosymmetric trans-vacant configuration, which potentially leads to an incorrect prediction of montmorillonite acid-base surface properties. We computed intrinsic acidity constants of the surface sites of a montmorillonite layer with a cis-vacant structure using the first-principles molecular dynamics-based vertical energy gap method. We evaluated pKa values for both non-substituted and Mg-substituted layers on common edge surfaces (i.e., surfaces perpendicular to [010], [01̅0], [110], and [1̅1̅0] crystallographic directions). The functional groups ≡Si(OH), ≡Al(OH2)2/≡Al(OH)(OH2), and ≡SiO(OH)Al sites on surfaces perpendicular to [010] and [01̅0] and ≡Si(OH)U, ≡Si(OH)L, ≡Al(OH2), and ≡Al(OH2)2 on surfaces perpendicular to [110] and [1̅1̅0] determine the proton reactivity of non-substituted cis-vacant edge surfaces. Moreover, the structural OH sites on edge surfaces had extremely high pKa values, which do not show reactivity at a common pH. Meanwhile, Mg2+ substitution results in an increase in pKa values at local or adjacent sites, in which the effect is limited by the distance between the sites. A surface complexation model was built with predicted pKa values, which enabled us to predict surface properties as a function of pH and ionic strength. Edge surface charge of both trans- and cis-vacant models has little dependence on Mg2+ substitutions, but the dependence on the crystal plane orientation is strong. In particular, at pH below 7, edge surfaces are positively or negatively charged depending on their orientation. Implications of these findings on contaminant adsorption by smectites are discussed.

Separating selenium species by diffusion in Brazilian bentonite: a mathematical modeling approach

Bentonite was applied in diffusive studies for selenium, an emerging contaminant. The planar source method was used to determine the apparent and effective diffusion coefficients and assess the mobility of the selenium species. A double Gaussian function described the results. Different diffusion coefficients were associated with different mobilities, and consequently, to the coexistence of two selenium species: selenite and selenate. Apparent diffusion coefficients were higher for selenate, around 10^- 10 m² s^- 1, than for selenite, around 10^- 12 m² s^- 1. Results from sequential extraction and distribution coefficient justified selenate's greater mobility than selenite. Since the increase in redox potential from 448 to 511 mV may be associated with selenite oxidation in an interconversion process, the diffusion in bentonite demonstrates that applications in geological barriers deserve attention regarding the mobilization of selenium species. Interconversions can mobilize selenium, as reduced species can shift to more oxidized and mobile species, enhancing environmental contamination.

Double hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(dehydroalanine) four-arm star block copolymers: synthesis and solution behavior

We report the synthesis and solution behavior of double hydrophilic star-shaped block copolymers featuring an ampholytic polydehydroalanine segment.

Insight into the aqueous Laponite® nanodispersions for self-assembled poly(itaconic acid) nanocomposite hydrogels: The effect of multivalent phosphate dispersants

HYPOTHESIS

We hypothesize, that physical network between Laponite® nanoparticles and high molecular weight polyelectrolyte formed by mixing of Laponite® nanodispersion (containing multivalent phosphate dispersant) and polyelectrolyte solution is strongly influenced by the type and content of dispersant, which forms electric double layer (EDL) closely to the Laponite® edges. Thus, optimum dispersant concentration is necessary to overcome clay-clay interactions (excellent clay delamination), but should not be exceeded, what would result in the EDL compression and weakening of attractions forming clay-polyelectrolyte network. Thus, deeper investigation of Laponite® nanodispersions is highly demanded since it would enable to better design the self-assembled clay-polyelectrolyte hydrogels.

EXPERIMENTS

To study clay interparticle interactions in the presence of various multivalent phosphates, complementary methods providing wide nanodispersion characterization have been applied: zeta potential measurement and SAXS technique (electrostatic interactions), oscillatory rheology (nanodispersion physical state) and NMR experiments (ion immobilization degree).

FINDINGS

It was found that multivalent phosphates induce and tune strength of clay-polyelectrolyte interactions forming hydrogel network in terms of varying EDL on the Laponite® edges. Moreover, phosphate dispersing efficiency depends on the molecular size, chemical structure, and valence of the anion; its potential as efficient dispersant for hydrogel preparation can be evaluated by estimation of anion charge density.

Zeta Potential and Colloidal Stability Predictions for Inorganic Nanoparticle Dispersions: Effects of Experimental Conditions and Electrokinetic Models on the Interpretation of Results

In this work, a set of experimental electrophoretic mobility (μ_e) data was used to show how inappropriate selection of the electrokinetic model used to calculate the zeta potential (ζ-potential) can compromise the interpretation of the results for nanoparticles (NPs). The main consequences of using ζ-potential values as criteria to indicate the colloidal stability of NP dispersions are discussed based on DLVO interaction energy predictions. For this, magnetite (Fe₃O₄) NPs were synthesized and characterized as a model system for performing electrokinetic experiments. The results showed that the Fe₃O₄ NPs formed mass fractal aggregates in solution, so the ζ-potential could not be determined under ideal conditions when μ_e depends on the NP radius. In addition, the Dukhin number (Du) estimated from potentiometric titration results indicated that stagnant layer conduction (SLC) could not be neglected for this system. The electrokinetic models that do not consider SLC grossly underestimated the ζ-potential values for the Fe₃O₄ NPs. The DLVO interaction energy predictions for the colloidal stability of the Fe₃O₄ NP dispersions also depended on the electrokinetic model used to calculate the ζ-potential. The results obtained for the Fe₃O₄ NP dispersions also suggested that, contrary to many reports in the literature, high ζ-potential values do not necessarily reflect high colloidal stability for charge-stabilized NP dispersions.

Spectral induced polarization of clay-oxide hybrid particles

The properties of clays and oxides govern many environmental processes, consequently, ongoing effort is invested in developing non-destructive, in-situ analytical tools that reflect these properties. Herein, the physicochemical properties of montmorillonite (MMT) and iron-oxide coated montmorillonite (FeOx-MMT) were characterized using common analytical techniques, and the results were compared to spectral induced polarization (SIP) measurements. FeOx-MMT particles showed a lower CEC, higher pH dependency of the surface charge, and lower suspension stability. Also, the size of the primary particles increased following iron-oxide deposition. SIP measurements over a range of salinities showed that the effective polarization length of the clays was in the order of several microns, suggesting the measurements of aggregates (not primary particles). Moreover, FeOx-MMT particles were more compact than MMT, and their size decreased with increasing salinity due to compaction of the EDL and arrangement of primary particles in the aggregate. The SIP-response to pH changes agreed with zeta potential measurements; at low pH values, MMT exhibited higher polarization due to the higher CEC. However, at a high pH, the differences diminish due to deprotonation of the Fe-OH surface groups. These findings suggest that SIP is a sensitive method that can detect changes in the surface chemistry of soil particles.

Exploration of a New Source of Sustainable Nanomaterial from the Koh-e-Suleiman Mountain Range of Pakistan for Industrial Applications

The present study aimed to explore a new source of montmorillonite and to develop an extraction and purification protocol for its isolation from raw clay samples acquired from the Koh-e-Suleiman mountain range in Pakistan. The process involved the collection of raw clay from the source, identification and quantification of montmorillonite. Granulometric extraction and purification protocols increased the montmorillonite content from 21.8-25.1% in the raw clay to 90.1-93.9% after small-scale extraction and 85.33-89.33% on a larger scale. A techno-economic analysis highlighted the practicality and economic benefits of large-scale extraction for industrial applications. This study highlights the existence of a substantial new source of this valuable clay which is currently used across multiple industries including construction, pottery making, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and engineering. It is intuitively expected that the large-scale extraction of the material will improve the economic condition of the region by providing employment opportunities to locals and may be a valuable resource for export.

Montmorillonite-lipid hybrid carriers for ionizable and neutral poorly water-soluble drugs: Formulation, characterization and in vitro lipolysis studies

Lipid-based formulations (LBFs) are a popular strategy for enhancing the gastrointestinal solubilization and absorption of poorly water-soluble drugs. In light of this, montmorillonite-lipid hybrid (MLH) particles, composed of medium-chain triglycerides, lecithin and montmorillonite clay platelets, have been developed as a novel solid-state LBF. Owing to the unique charge properties of montmorillonite, whereby the clay platelet surfaces carry a permanent negative charge and the platelet edges carry a pH-dependent charge, three model poorly water-soluble drugs with different charge properties; blonanserin (weak base, pKa 7.7), ibuprofen (weak acid, pKa 4.5) and fenofibrate (neutral), were formulated as MLH particles and their performance during biorelevant in vitro lipolysis at pH 7.5 was investigated. For blonanserin, drug solubilization during in vitro lipolysis was significantly reduced 3.4-fold and 3.2-fold for MLH particles in comparison to a control lipid solution and silica-lipid hybrid (SLH) particles, respectively. It was hypothesized that strong electrostatic interactions between the anionic montmorillonite platelet surfaces and cationic blonanserin molecules were responsible for the inferior performance of MLH particles. In contrast, no significant influence on drug solubilization was observed for ibuprofen- and fenofibrate-loaded MLH particles. The results of the current study indicate that whilst MLH particles are a promising novel formulation strategy for poorly water-soluble drugs, drug ionization tendency and the potential for drug-clay interactions must be taken into consideration to ensure an appropriate performance.

The ionic strength dependent zeta potential at the surface of hexadecane droplets in water and the corresponding interfacial adsorption of surfactants

An anomalous maximum in the ionic strength dependent electrophoretic mobility curves has been observed in previous reports from particles dispersed in colloids. This maximum has been considered anomalous because it is contradictory with the Gouy-Chapman model. The existence of such a maximum has been attributed to specific ionic adsorption, a hairy layer at the surface, or the effect of the anomalous change of surface conductivity in different studies. It was also pointed out that the O'Brien-White approach based on the Gouy-Chapman model could be used to understand this maximum in electrophoretic mobility curves and lead to understandable zeta potential curves. This implied that the observed maximum was actually not "anomalous". In this work we report our simulation of ionic strength dependent zeta potential curves based on the O'Brien-White approach and experimental studies of the ionic strength dependent electrophoretic mobility of the hexadecane droplets in the hexadecane-water emulsions at different pH or in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate at varied concentrations. In some cases, the simulation shows that the calculation with the O'Brien-White approach does change the trend in the concerned ionic strength dependent curves. However, the simulation in some other cases also leads to similar trends in the ionic strength dependent electrophoretic mobility curves and zeta potential curves. In the experiments, both the existence and non-existence of such a maximum were observed and demonstrated to be system dependent. The corresponding molecular structure of the oil-water interface was then discussed with the analyses of the zeta potential curves and second harmonic generation signals recorded at the hexadecane-water interface.

Amphiphilic and double hydrophilic block copolymers containing a polydehydroalanine block

We present the synthesis and characterization of amphiphilic and double hydrophilic block copolymers containing a polydehydroalanine (PDha) block.

Nanostructured Montmorillonite Clay for Controlling the Lipase-Mediated Digestion of Medium Chain Triglycerides

Biocompatible lipid hybrid particles composed of montmorillonite and medium chain triglycerides were engineered for the first time by spray drying oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by montmorillonite platelets to form montmorillonite-lipid hybrid (MLH) microparticles containing up to 75% w/w lipid. In vitro lipolysis studies under simulated intestinal conditions indicated that the specific porous nanoarchitecture and surface chemistry of MLH particles significantly increased the rate (>10-fold) and extent of lipase-mediated digestion compared to that of coarse and homogenized submicrometer triglyceride emulsions. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance studies verified the rapid and enhanced production of fatty acids for MLH particles; these are electrostatically repelled by the negatively charged montmorillonite platelet faces and avoid the "interfacial poisoning" caused by incomplete digestion that retards lipid droplet digestion. MLH particles are a novel biomaterial and encapsulation system that optimize lipase enzyme efficiency and have excellent potential as a smart delivery system for lipophilic biomolecules owing to their exceptional physicochemical and biologically active properties. These particles can be readily fabricated with varying lipid loads and thus may be tailored to optimize the solubilization of specific bioactive molecules requiring reformulation.
