Solubilization of octane in cationic surfactant–anionic polymer complexes: Effect of ionic strength

Enhancing deep eutectic solvent systems for efficient fermentable sugar recovery from lignocellulosic fiber

Efficient conversion of sugars into fermentable sugars is a critical challenge in the cost-effective production of lignocellulosic biopolymers and biofuels. This study focuses on various sugar quantification techniques applied to Furcraea Foetida (Mauritius Hemp) samples, utilizing natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) and deep eutectic solvents (DES) like urea, glycerol, citrates, pyrogallol (PY), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Employing a Taguchi-designed experiment, operational conditions were fine-tuned to evaluate the influence of time, concentration, and temperature on each deep eutectic solvent-based process. The emerging green solvent extraction approach demonstrated significant results, achieving notably high sugar yields compared to traditional techniques such as alkali, hot-water, and acid-mediated extraction. At a CTAB:PY molar ratio of 1:3, optimized for 60 min at 50 °C, the highest fermentable sugar (FS) yield of 0.6891 ± 0.0123 g FS/g LCB was attained-2 to 6 times higher than non-optimized values and 0.2 to 0.3 times higher than optimized traditional methods. In light of this, this research study emphasizes the pivotal significance of efficient sugar conversion through optimized deep eutectic solvent-based extraction methods, with a particular focus on Furcraea Foetida fibers, offering promising outcomes for the biofuel and biopolymer production industry.

Effects of different surfactants on the conjugates of soybean protein-polyphenols for the preparation of β-carotene microcapsules

In this study, we investigated the spray-drying microencapsulation of β-carotene in oil co-stabilized by soy protein isolate-epigallocatechin-3-gallate conjugate (SPE) and small molecule surfactants [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), and tea saponin (TS)] of different concentrations [0.1, 0.5, and 1.0% (w/v)], as a prospective approach to stabilize β-carotene. The results show that different surfactant types and concentrations significantly affect the encapsulation efficiency, water dispersibility, microstructure, and digestion of the microcapsules. Interactions between the surfactants and the SPE at the interface were found to include both synergistic and competitive effects, and they depended on the surfactant type and concentration. Moreover, the addition of SDS and TS before spray drying significantly improved the microencapsulation performance of the microcapsules and the water dispersion behavior of the corresponding spray-dried powders. The highest encapsulation efficiency was achieved for the SPE-0.1TS-encapsulated β-carotene microcapsules. In contrast, the addition of CTAB was not conducive to microcapsule formation, resulting in poor encapsulation efficiency, water dispersibility, thermal stability, β-carotene retention rate, and oxidation stability. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion results revealed that the addition of CTAB promotes the release of β-carotene and improves the bioaccessibility of β-carotene. In contrast, except for SPE-1.0SDS, the addition of SDS and TS inhibited β-carotene release and reduced β-carotene bioaccessibility. This study demonstrated that this novel β-carotene encapsulation formulation can overcome stability limitations for the development of β-carotene supplements with a high bioaccessibility.

Dynamics in polyelectrolyte/microemulsion complexes

Oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion droplets are convenient carriers for hydrophobic molecules in an aqueous phase and are used for a wide range of applications. We studied weakly charged O/W microemulsion droplets complexed with oppositely charged polyacrylates that form long linear arrangements of droplets. All samples showed rather low viscosities, which is in contrast to similar systems of hydrophobically interconnected droplets. Here, we applied small-angle neutron scattering, dynamic light scattering and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy to characterise the dynamic properties of polyacrylate/microemulsion complexes in order to understand the origin of the low-viscous behaviour. We found that the electrostatic interactions lead to very dynamic complexes with high exchange rates of droplets and only a fraction of the droplets is contained within the transient complexes at a given time. These results were only accessible by the combination of different methods as one method alone would have given an incomplete picture.

Structural control of polyelectrolyte/microemulsion droplet complexes (PEMECs) with different polyacrylates

The ionic assembly of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes (PESCs) is often done with the aim of constructing more functional colloids, for instance as advanced delivery systems. However, PESCs are often not easily loaded with a solubilisate due to intrinsic restrictions of such complexes. This question was addressed from a different starting point: by employing microemulsion droplets as heavily loaded surfactant systems and thereby avoiding potential solubilisation limitations from the beginning. We investigated mixtures of cationic oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion droplets and oppositely charged sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) and determined structure and phase behaviour as a function of the mixing ratio for different droplet sizes and different M w (NaPA). Around an equimolar charge ratio an extended precipitate region is present, which becomes wider for larger droplets and with increasing M w of the NaPA. Static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) show the formation of one-dimensional arrangements of microemulsion droplets for polyelectrolyte excess, which become more elongated with increasing M w (NaPA) and less so with increasing NaPA excess. What is interesting is a marked sensitivity to ionic strength, where already a modest increase to ∼20 mM leads to a dissolution of the complexes. This work shows that polyelectrolyte/microemulsion complexes (PEMECs) are structurally very versatile hybrid systems, combining the high solubilisate loading of microemulsions with the larger-scale structuring induced by the polymer, thereby markedly extending the concept of conventional PESCs. This type of system has not been described before and is highly promising for future applications where high payloads are to be formulated.
