Effect of gel matrix confinement on the solvent dynamics in supramolecular gels

Alkyl-π Functional Molecular Gels: Control of Elastic Modulus and Improvement of Electret Performance

The development of optoelectronically-active soft materials is drawing attention to the application of soft electronics. A room-temperature solvent-free liquid obtained by modifying a π-conjugated moiety with flexible yet bulky alkyl chains is a promising functional soft material. Tuning the elastic modulus (G') is essential for employing optoelectronically-active alkyl-π liquids in deformable devices. However, the range of G' achieved through the molecular design of alkyl-π liquids is limited. We report herein a method for controlling G' of alkyl-π liquids by gelation. Adding 1 wt % low-molecular-weight gelator formed the alkyl-π functional molecular gel (FMG) and increased G' of alkyl-π liquids by up to seven orders of magnitude while retaining the optical properties. Because alkyl-π FMGs have functional π-moieties in the gel medium, this new class of gels has a much higher content of π-moieties of up to 59 wt % compared to conventional π-gels of only a few wt %. More importantly, the gel state has a 23 % higher charge-retention capacity than the liquid, providing better performance in deformable mechanoelectric generator-electret devices. The strategy used in this study is a novel approach for developing next-generation optoelectronically-active FMG materials.

Water Dynamics in Dextran-Based Hydrogel Micro/Nanoparticles Studied by NMR Diffusometry and Relaxometry

Water dynamics in mesoporous dextran hydrogel micro/nanoparticles was investigated by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. High-resolution 1H NMR spectra and pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR diffusometry measurements obtained on swollen state dextran micro/nanogel revealed the existence of different fractions of water molecules based on their interaction with the gel matrix. In addition to the translational diffusion of bulk water, two more diffusion processes characterized with self-diffusion coefficients 1 and 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of bulk water were identified. 1H spin-lattice relaxation dispersion profiles obtained for a broad range of Larmor frequencies using fast field cycling (FFC) and conventional NMR relaxometry techniques allowed us to further clarify the mechanisms of molecular motion. According to the water proton pool fractions and associated self-diffusion coefficients, it is shown that the relaxation contribution associated with reorientation-mediated translational motions (RMTDs) dominates the relaxation dispersion observed at intermediate frequencies. At very low frequencies, the spin-lattice relaxation rate is dominated by the slow solid-gel dynamics probed by the water molecules interacting with the pores' surface hydroxyl groups due to the rapid chemical exchange between surface hydroxyl groups and free water. The correlation time for the thumbling-like motion of the dextran gel was found to be in the submillisecond range. The values of the self-diffusion and coherence lengths associated with motion of water molecules interacting with the solid-gel particles are consistent with the particle size and pore size distributions obtained for the studied dextran gels.

Modeling Molecular Interactions with Wetting and Non-Wetting Rock Surfaces by Combining Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and NMR Relaxometry

Three types of natural rocks─Bentheimer and Berea sandstones, as well as Liège Chalk─have been aged by immersion in a bitumen solution for extended periods of time in two steps, changing the surface conditions from water-wet to oil-wet. NMR relaxation dispersion measurements were carried out on water and oil constituents, with saturated and aromatic molecules considered individually. In order to separate the different relaxation mechanisms discussed in the literature, ¹H and ¹⁹F relaxation times were compared to ²H for fully deuterated liquids: while ²H relaxes predominantly by quadrupolar coupling, which is an intramolecular process, the remaining nuclei relax by dipolar coupling, which potentially consists of intra- and intermolecular contributions. The wettability change becomes evident in an increase of relaxation rates for oil and a corresponding decrease for water. However, this expected behavior dominates only for the spin-lattice relaxation rate R₁ at very low field strengths and for the spin-spin relaxation rate R₂, while high-field longitudinal relaxation shows a much weaker or even reverse trend. This is attributed in part to a change of radical concentration on the pore surface upon coverage of the native rock surface by bitumen as well as by the change of surface chemistry and roughness. EPR and DNP measurements quantify the change of volume vs surface radical concentration in the rocks, and an improved understanding of the role of relaxation via paramagnetic centers is obtained. By means of comparing different fluids and nuclei in combination with a defined wettability change of natural rocks, a refined model for molecular dynamics in conjunction with NMR relaxation dispersion is proposed.

New Supramolecular Drug Carriers: The Study of Organogel Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles

An aqueous solution of sodium citrate stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNP) in the presence of N-lauroyl-L-alanine (C12ALA) forms a stable gel. The structure of the gel and the distribution profile of AuNP in it were analyzed. Will nanoparticles separated from each other with sodium citrate behave in the same way in solution and trapped in the gel matrix? Will the spatial limitation of solvent molecules aggregate nanoparticles and destroy their homogeneity? These questions are very important from the point of view of the use of gold nanoparticles, trapped in the gel structure as carriers of drugs in the slow-release process. The lack of homogeneity of this distribution will have a major impact on the rate of release of the appropriate amount of therapeutic drug from the matrix. In this work, we attempt to answer these questions. The performed biological assays revealed that both C12ALA and C12ALA-AuNP show an excellent level of biological neutrality. They might be used as a transporting medium for a drug delivery without affecting the drug's activity.

Water Dynamics in Composite Aqueous Suspensions of Cellulose Nanocrystals and a Clay Mineral Studied through Magnetic Resonance Relaxometry

¹H spin-lattice relaxation time (T₁) measurements were performed to probe the dynamic behavior of water in aqueous suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and a layered smectite clay mineral with different degrees of concentration. ¹H-T₁ experiments were carried out over a wide frequency domain, ranging from a few kilohertz to 500 MHz, with the aid of conventional and fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. The experimental relaxometry data illustrate differences between the dynamic behavior of bulk water and that confined in the vicinity of CNC-clay surfaces. Clay alone in moderate concentration was found to enforce almost no effect on the water dynamics, whereas introducing CNCs to the system presented a significantly enhanced relaxivity. The modeling of the relaxation dispersions allowed the determination of dynamical processes and variables explaining the dynamic behavior of water in CNC-clay suspensions. It turned out that reorientations mediated by translational displacements are a leading NMR relaxation mechanism for water interacting with the surfaces of CNC-clay particles in the low-frequency domain. In the high-frequency regime, however, the inner-sphere paramagnetic relaxation mechanism dominates, which is caused by the interaction of water protons with dissolved Fe ions.

Detection of Authenticity and Quality of the Turkish Delights (Lokum) by Means of Conventional and Fast Field Cycling Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxometry

Turkish delights (lokum) are traditional confectionery products that contain mainly sucrose as the sugar source and starch as the gelling agent. However, manufacturers sometimes might prefer to use corn syrup instead of sucrose to decrease the cost. This jeopardizes the originality of Turkish delights and leads to production of adulterated samples. In this study, Turkish delights were formulated using sucrose (original sample) and different types of corn syrups (SBF10, SCG40, and SCG60). Results clearly indicated that corn-syrup-containing samples had improved textural properties and were less prone to crystallization. However, this case affected authenticity of the products negatively. Both time domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD NMR) and fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (FFC NMR) techniques were found to be effective to discriminate the original samples from the corn-syrup-containing samples. In addition, quantitative analysis of FFC NMR showed that, apart from the rotational motions, molecules in Turkish delights (mainly water and also sugar molecules) undergo two types of translational dynamics.

Low-field and variable-field NMR relaxation studies of H2O and D2O molecular dynamics in articular cartilage

Osteoarthritis (OA) as the main degenerative disease of articular cartilage in joints is accompanied by structural and compositional changes in the tissue. Degeneration is a consequence of a reduction of the amount of macromolecules, the so-called proteoglycans, and of a corresponding increase in water content, both leading to structural weakening of cartilage. NMR investigations of cartilage generally address only the relaxation properties of water. In this study, two-dimensional (T1-T2) measurements of bovine articular cartilage samples were carried out for different stages of hydration, complemented by molecular exchange with D2O and treatment by trypsin which simulates degeneration by OA. Two signal components were identified in all measurements, characterized by very different T2 which suggests liquid-like and solid-like dynamics. These measurements allow the quantification of separate hydrogen components and their assignment to defined physical pools which had been discussed repeatedly in the literature, i.e. bulk-like water and a combination of protein hydrogens and strongly bound water. The first determination of 2H relaxation dispersion in comparison to 1H dispersion suggests intramolecular interactions as the dominating source for the pronounced magnetic field dependence of the longitudinal relaxation time T1.

Water dynamics in eggs by means of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance relaxometry

¹H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance relaxometry has been applied to reveal dynamical properties of water molecules embedded into egg yolk and white of three species: turkey, chicken and quail. Two fractions of water molecules, referred to as confined-water and free-water fractions, have been revealed. It has been demonstrated that translation diffusion of the confined-water fraction is three-dimensional. The dynamics of the confined-water has been quantitatively described in terms of diffusion coefficients and rotational correlation times. The parameters have been compared for egg yolk and white for all the species. In addition to these quantities, the number of the confined-water molecules per unit volume has been provided for all cases. The obtained parameters provide insight into the dynamics of water in eggs of different origin and allow to identify similarities and differences between them in connection to the structure of the network formed by the macromolecular fraction of egg yolk and white.

Diffusion across a gel-gel interface - molecular-scale mobility of self-assembled 'solid-like' gel nanofibres in multi-component supramolecular organogels

This paper explores macroscopic-scale diffusion of the molecular-scale building blocks of two-component self-assembled organogel nanofibres using a diffusion cell in which two different gels are in contact with one another. Both components of the 'solid-like' nanofibres (lysine peptide dendron acids and amines) can diffuse through these gels and across a gel-gel interface, although diffusion is significantly slower than that of a non-interactive additive in the 'liquid-like' phase of the gel. Amine diffusion was probed by bringing similar gels with different amines into contact. Dendron acid diffusion was tested by bringing similar gels with enantiomeric dendrons into contact. Surprisingly, dendron and amine diffusion rates were similar, even though the peptide dendron is more intimately hydrogen bonded in the self-assembled nanofibres. It is proposed that thermal disassembly of the acid-amine complex delivers both components into the liquid-like phase, allowing them to diffuse via a decomplexation/recomplexation mechanism. This is a rare observation in which molecules assembled into solid-like gel nanofibres are mobile - in dynamic equilibrium with the liquid-like phase. Gel nanofibre diffusion and reorganisation are vital in understanding dynamic materials processes such as metastability, self-healing and adaptability.

Gels with sense: supramolecular materials that respond to heat, light and sound

Advances in the field of supramolecular chemistry have made it possible, in many situations, to reliably engineer soft materials to address a specific technological problem. Particularly exciting are "smart" gels that undergo reversible physical changes on exposure to remote, non-invasive environmental stimuli. This review explores the development of gels which are transformed by heat, light and ultrasound, as well as other mechanical inputs, applied voltages and magnetic fields. Focusing on small-molecule gelators, but with reference to organic polymers and metal-organic systems, we examine how the structures of gelator assemblies influence the physical and chemical mechanisms leading to thermo-, photo- and mechano-switchable behaviour. In addition, we evaluate how the unique and versatile properties of smart materials may be exploited in a wide range of applications, including catalysis, crystal growth, ion sensing, drug delivery, data storage and biomaterial replacement.

Enhanced Surface Interaction of Water Confined in Hierarchical Porous Polymers Induced by Hydrogen Bonding

Hierarchical porous polymer systems are increasingly applied to catalysis, bioengineering, or separation technology because of the versatility provided by the connection of mesopores with percolating macroporous structures. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a suitable technique for the study of such systems as it can detect signals stemming from the confined liquid and translate this information into pore size, molecular mobility, and liquid-surface interactions. We focus on the properties of water confined in macroporous polymers of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate [poly(EGDMA-co-HEMA)] with different amounts of cross-linkers, in which a substantial variation of hydroxyl groups is achieved. As soft polymer scaffolds may swell upon saturation with determined liquids, the use of NMR is particularly important as it measures the system in its operational state. This study combines different NMR techniques to obtain information on surface interactions of water with hydrophilic polymer chains. A transition from a surface-induced relaxation in which relaxivity depends on the pore size to a regime where the organic pore surface strongly restricts water diffusion is observed. Surface affinities are defined through the molecular residence times near the network surface.
