A facile one-pot method to synthesize ultrasmall core-shell superparamagnetic and upconversion nanoparticles

Multifunctional Superparticles for Magnetically Targeted NIR-II Imaging and Photodynamic Therapy

Theranostics, the combination of diagnostics and therapies, has been considered as a promising strategy for clinical cancer treatment. Nonetheless, building a smart theranostic system with multifunction for different on-demand applications still remains elusive. Herein, an easy and user-friendly microemulsion based method is developed to modularly assemble upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and Fe3 O4 nanoparticles together, forming multifunctional UCNPs/Fe3 O4 superparticles with highly integrated functionalities including the 808 nm excitation for real-time NIR-II imaging, magnetic targeting, and the upconversion luminescence upon 980 nm excitation for on-demand photodynamic therapy (PDT). With a magnet placed nearby the tumor, in vivo NIR-II imaging uncovers that superparticles tend to migrate toward the tumor and exhibit intense tumor accumulation, ≈6 folds higher than that without magnetic targeting 2 h after intravenous injection. NIR laser irradiation is then used to trigger PDT, obtaining an outstanding tumor elimination under magnetic tumor targeting, which shows a high potential to be applied in targeted cancer theranostics.

Novel Carbon-Based Magnetic Luminescent Nanocomposites for Multimodal Imaging

Multifunctional nanocomposites can combine multiple functions into a single nanosystem and thus have attracted extensive interest in various fields. The combination of magnetic and upconversion luminescent nanoparticles into one single nanoplatform, which have a good application in biomedical fields such as bio-magnetic separation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and optical imaging, is highly desirable. Here we reported multifunctional nanocomposites by using hollow carbon sphere to integrate magnetic Fe₃O₄ and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) into one nanosystem. The as-prepared UCNPs/Fe₃O₄@h-C have near-infrared (NIR) luminescence under 980 nm excitation and superparamagnetism. In addition, since the carbon layer can absorb NIR light and transfer it into heat with high efficiency, the nanocomposites can realize photo thermal (PT), upconversion luminescence (UCL) and MRI tri-mode imaging. The UCNPs/Fe₃O₄@h-C might be further utilized as a potential theranostic agent, including its in-depth monitoring through luminescent imaging and MRI diagnosis, as well as its direct use in tumors as a photothermal therapy (PTT) agent.

Recent Advances in Magnetic Upconversion Nanocomposites for Bioapplications

The combination of magnetism and upconversion luminescent property into one single nanostructure is fascinating for biological fields, such as multimodal bioimaging, targeted drug delivery, and imaging-guided therapy. In this review, we will provide the state-of-the-art advances on magnetic upconversion nanocomposites towards their bioapplications. Their structure design, synthesis methods, surface engineering and applications in bioimaging, drug delivery, therapy as well as biodetection will be covered.

Designed synthesis and surface engineering strategies of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) hold great promise for future biomedical applications because of their magnetic properties as well as other intrinsic properties such as low toxicity, colloidal stability, and surface engineering capability. Numerous related studies on iron oxide NPs have been conducted. Recent progress in nanochemistry has enabled fine control over the size, crystallinity, uniformity, and surface properties of iron oxide NPs. This review examines various synthetic approaches and surface engineering strategies for preparing naked and functional iron oxide NPs with different physicochemical properties. Growing interest in designed and surface-engineered iron oxide NPs with multifunctionalities was explored in in vitro/in vivo biomedical applications, focusing on their combined roles in bioseparation, as a biosensor, targeted-drug delivery, MR contrast agents, and magnetic fluid hyperthermia. This review outlines the limitations of extant surface engineering strategies and several developing strategies that may overcome these limitations. This study also details the promising future directions of this active research field.
