Design of pyridyl-modified amphiphilic polymeric ligands: Towards better passivation of water-soluble colloidal quantum dots for improved optical performance

Encapsulation of Nanoparticles with Statistical Copolymers with Different Surface Charges and Analysis of Their Interactions with Proteins and Cells

Encapsulation with polymers is a well-known strategy to stabilize and functionalize nanomaterials and tune their physicochemical properties. Amphiphilic copolymers are promising in this context, but their structural diversity and complexity also make understanding and predicting their behavior challenging. This is particularly the case in complex media which are relevant for intended applications in medicine and nanobiotechnology. Here, we studied the encapsulation of gold nanoparticles and quantum dots with amphiphilic copolymers differing in their charge and molecular structure. Protein adsorption to the nanoconjugates was studied with fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, and their surface activity was studied with dynamic interfacial tensiometry. Encapsulation of the nanoparticles without affecting their characteristic properties was possible with all tested polymers and provided good stabilization. However, the interaction with proteins and cells significantly depended on structural details. We identified statistical copolymers providing strongly reduced protein adsorption and low unspecific cellular uptake. Interestingly, different zwitterionic amphiphilic copolymers showed substantial differences in their resulting bio-repulsive properties. Among the polymers tested herein, statistical copolymers with sulfobetaine and phosphatidylcholine sidechains performed better than copolymers with carboxylic acid- and dimethylamino-terminated sidechains.

Water-Soluble Quantum Dots for Inkjet Printing Color Conversion Films with Simultaneous High Efficiency and Stability

Water-soluble quantum dots (QDs) are necessary to prepare patterned pixels or films for high-resolution displays with less environmental burden but are very limited by the trade-off between photoluminescence and stability of QDs. In this work, we proposed synthesizing water-soluble QDs with simultaneous excellent luminescence properties and high stability by coating the amphiphilic poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene)-ethanol amine (PMAO-EA) polymer on the surface of silane-treated QDs. These coated QDs show a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as 94%, and they have good photoluminescence stability against light irradiation and thermal attacks, owing to the suppression of the nonradiative recombination by the polymer layer and the isolation of oxygen and water by the silica layer. The water-soluble QDs, mixed with ethylene glycol, enable inkjet printing of QD color conversion films (QD-CCFs) with an average diameter of 68 μm for each pixel and a high PLQY of 91%. The QD-CCFs are demonstrated to fabricate red-emitting mini-LEDs by combining with blue mini-LED chips, which have an external quantum efficiency as high as 25.86% and a luminance of 2.44 × 107 cd/m2. We believe that the proposed strategy is applicable to other water-soluble QDs and paves an avenue for inkjet printing environmentally friendly QD-CCFs for mini/micro-LED displays.

Recent Breakthroughs in Using Quantum Dots for Cancer Imaging and Drug Delivery Purposes

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Because each person's cancer may be unique, diagnosing and treating cancer is challenging. Advances in nanomedicine have made it possible to detect tumors and quickly investigate tumor cells at a cellular level in contrast to prior diagnostic techniques. Quantum dots (QDs) are functional nanoparticles reported to be useful for diagnosis. QDs are semiconducting tiny nanocrystals, 2-10 nm in diameter, with exceptional and useful optoelectronic properties that can be tailored to sensitively report on their environment. This review highlights these exceptional semiconducting QDs and their properties and synthesis methods when used in cancer diagnostics. The conjugation of reporting or binding molecules to the QD surface is discussed. This review summarizes the most recent advances in using QDs for in vitro imaging, in vivo imaging, and targeted drug delivery platforms in cancer applications.

Recent advances in quantum dot-based fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assays

Fluorescence immunoassays have been given considerable attention among the quantitative detection methods in the clinical medicine and food safety testing fields. In particular, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have become ideal fluorescent probes for highly sensitive and multiplexed detection due to their unique photophysical properties, and the QD fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assay (FLISA) with high sensitivity, high accuracy, and high throughput has been greatly developed recently. In this manuscript, the advantages of applying QDs to FLISA platforms and some strategies for their application to in vitro diagnostics and food safety are discussed. Given the rapid development of this field, we classify these strategies based on the combination of QD types and detection targets, including traditional QDs or QD micro/nano-spheres-FLISA, and multiple FLISA platforms. In addition, some new sensors based on the QD-FLISA are introduced; this is one of the hot spots in this field. The current focus and future direction of QD-FLISA are also discussed, which provides important guidance for the further development of FLISA.

Amphiphilic Polymer Ligand-Assisted Synthesis of Highly Luminescent and Stable Perovskite Nanocrystals for Sweat Fluorescent Sensing

The weak interfacial binding affinities of the inorganic perovskite core with ligands and high density of surface defect states induce the facile detachment of surface ligands from nanocrystals (NCs), resulting in their poor colloidal stability and fluorescence in aqueous. In this work, a powerful ligand engineering strategy was proposed for eliminating the surface defects and aggregation of the NCs. Using an amphiphilic polymer octylamine-modified polyacrylic acid (OPA) as a capping ligand, the as-synthesized CsPbBr₃ NCs retain high photoluminescence intensity and stability by the modified ligand-assisted reprecipitation method. The increase in the fluorescence lifetime and NC size could also be observed, and how the NC particle size influences fluorescence lifetime was further studied. In addition, the water stability, photostability, and thermal stability were significantly improved, and the fluorescence of NCs can maintain 80.13% of the original value in water for 15 d. We further validated that the strong binding affinity of OPA and oleylamine ligands with CsPbBr₃ NCs leads to a reduction in surface trap states, and a large amount of carboxyl groups of the OPA made the NCs preserve good water solubility. In addition, the OPA has the ability of adjusting the particle size of NCs. Furthermore, a wavelength-shifted colorimetric sensor based on these NCs was constructed for detection of Cl^- in sweat, which enables the rapid and visual detection of Cl^- with high accuracy and stability. Overall, these CsPbBr₃ NCs synthesized by the ligand engineering strategy validated their wide applications in biomedical sensing fields.

DFT Modeling of the Alternating Radical Copolymerization and Alder-Ene Reaction between Maleic Anhydride and Olefins

The free radical copolymerization of electron-acceptor and electron-donor vinyl monomers represents a particular case of sequence-controlled polymerization. The reactions of maleic anhydride (MA) or related compounds (acceptor comonomers) with α-olefins (donor comonomers) result in the formation of the alternating copolymers that have clear prospects for petrochemical and biomedical applications. However, in contrast to the well-established polymerization of acrylate monomers, these processes have not been studied theoretically using the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In our research, we performed a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the free radical copolymerization of MA and closely related maleimide with different structural types of olefins at mpw1pw91/6-311g(d) level of the DFT. The results of our calculations clearly indicated the preference of the alternating reaction mode for the copolymerization of MA with α-olefins, isobutylene and prospective unsaturated monomers, as well as methylenealkanes. The DFT modeling of the thermally induced Alder-ene reaction between MA and olefins allowed to exclude this reaction from the scope of possible side processes at moderately high temperatures. Comparative analysis of MA and N-methylmaleimide (MMI) reactivity shown that the use of MMI instead of MA makes no sense in terms of the reaction rate and selectivity.
