Synthesis of ZIF-8 Coating on ZnO Nanorods for Enhanced Gas-Sensing Performance

Firstly, ZnO nanorods were prepared by a relatively simple method, and then self-sacrificed by a water bath heating method to generate a commonly used porous ZIF-8 and firmly attached to the ZnO surface. The successful synthesis of synthetic composites was demonstrated with various detection methods. The gas-sensing results show that the ZIF-8-coated ZnO with a core-shell structure exhibits better response than the raw ZnO because of the increased specific surface area and active sites.

Design strategy and interface chemistry of ageing stable AZO films as high quality transparent conducting oxide

In this work, an attempt has been made to produce high quality Al-doped ZnO (AZO) transparent conductors by pulsed direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering under varied process conditions, namely sputtering power, sputtering pressure, doping level, and deposition time. The idea is to develop stable AZO films with excellent electro-optical properties, which can replace indium tin oxide (ITO) as transparent conducting oxide. The films are deposited on glass and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) for material properties. The electronic and optical properties are investigated using UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, four probe resistivity and Hall measurements, which facilitate the design strategy to achieve promising electro-optical properties. AZO films under optimized process conditions possess sheet resistance below 5 Ω/sq. and maximum visible light transmittance close to 90%. The lowest value of electrical resistivity is found to be 2.1 × 10^-4 Ω·cm. The combination of low electrical resistivity and high optical transparency leading to the figure of merit of the order of 10^-2 Ω^-1 is critically dependent on the process conditions of sputtering as well as doping contents. High free carrier concentration in AZO films leads to the Burstein-Moss shift and this observed blue shift of the absorption spectrum as compared to that of ZnO with native defects depends on the doping contents and the process conditions. This work further explores the role of interface chemistry to achieve high stability of AZO films under ambient oxidizing conditions. The adsorption kinetics of cationic rhodamine 6G and anionic methyl orange at AZO surface with varying adsorption sites and ageing studies on the sheet resistance reveal that the excellent stability of AZO films is delicately linked to the process conditions as well as the content of the dopant material used in the preparation of the AZO sputtering targets. The findings of the study confirm that the sheet resistances of selective AZO films undergo no change and fixed at 4.5 Ω/sq. even for ageing period of over six months.

Plasmon expedited response time and enhanced response in gold nanoparticles-decorated zinc oxide nanowire-based nitrogen dioxide gas sensor at room temperature

A highly sensitive and rapidly responsive nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) gas sensor based on gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) is presented. The Au NPs decoration was conducted onto ZnO NWs with and without a (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) layer on their surface by using the electrostatic force. The samples without the APTES layer exhibited high NO₂ gas sensitivity (i.e. expedited response time and enhanced gas response) due to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au NPs; in particular, the NO₂ gas response and the response time were increased by three times and shortened by 86%, respectively, compared with the undecorated ZnO NWs. The presence of the APTES layer improved the Au NPs attachment, but hindering the gas adsorption on the ZnO NWs surface, as proven by the observed photocurrent and gas response. Our findings imply that the response time of semiconductor gas sensors can be remarkably expedited by the LSPR effect, which is useful for developing practical gas sensors.

Gas Sensing Performances of ZnO Hierarchical Structures for Detecting Dissolved Gases in Transformer Oil: A Mini Review

Power transformer is one of the critical and expensive apparatus in high voltage power system. Hence, using highly efficient gas sensors to real-time monitor the fault characteristic gases dissolved in transformer oil is in pressing need to ensure the smooth functionalization of the power system. Till date, as a semiconductor metal oxide, zinc oxide (ZnO) is considered as the promising resistive-type gas sensing material. However, the elevated operating temperature, slow response, poor selectivity and stability limit its extensive applications in the field of dissolved gases monitoring. In this respect, rigorous efforts have been made to offset the above-mentioned shortcomings by multiple strategies. In this review, we first introduce the various ZnO hierarchical structures which possess high surface areas and less aggregation, as well as their corresponding gas sensing performances. Then, the primary parameters (sensitivity, selectivity and stability) which affect the performances of ZnO hierarchical structures based gas sensors are discussed in detail. Much more attention is particularly paid to the improvement strategies of enhancing these parameters, mainly including surface modification, additive doping and ultraviolet (UV) light activation. We finally review gas sensing mechanism of ZnO hierarchical structure based gas sensor. Such a detailed study may open up an avenue to fabricate sensor which achieve high sensitivity, good selectivity and long-term stability, making it a promising candidate for transformer oil monitor.

Photosensitive Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Materials for Room Temperature Gas Sensor Applications

In this work, the hybrids based on nanocrystalline SnO₂ or In₂O₃ semiconductor matrixes and heterocyclic Ru(II) complex are studied as materials for gas sensors operating at room temperature under photoactivation with visible light. Nanocrystalline semiconductor oxides are obtained by chemical precipitation with subsequent thermal annealing and characterized by XRD, SEM and single-point BET methods. The heterocyclic Ru(II) complex is synthesized for the first time and investigated by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR APT, MALDI-MS analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The HOMO and LUMO energies of the Ru(II) complex are calculated from cyclic voltammetry data. The hybrid materials are characterized by TGA-MS analysis and EDX mapping. The optical properties of hybrids are studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy in the diffuse reflection mode. The investigation of spectral dependencies of photoconductivity of hybrid samples demonstrates that the role of organic dye consists in shifting the photosensitivity range towards longer wavelengths. Sensor measurements demonstrate that hybrid materials are able to detect NO₂ in the concentration range of 0.25⁻2 ppm without the use of thermal heating under periodic illumination with even low-energy long-wavelength (red) light.

Natural Carbonized Sugar as a Low-Temperature Ammonia Sensor Material: Experimental, Theoretical, and Computational Studies

Carbonized sugar (CS) has been synthesized via microwave-assisted carbonization of market-quality tabletop sugar bearing in mind the advantages of this synthesis method, such as being useful, cost-effective, and eco-friendly. The as-prepared CS has been characterized for its morphology, phase purity, type of porosity, pore-size distribution, and so on. The gas-sensing properties of CS for various oxidizing and reducing gases are demonstrated at ambient temperature, where we observe good selectivity toward liquid ammonia among other gases. The highest ammonia response (50%) of a CS-based sensor was noted at 80 °C for 100 ppm concentration. The response and recovery times of the CS sensor are 180 and 216 s, respectively. This unveiling ammonia-sensing study is explored through a plausible theoretical mechanism, which is further well-supported by computational modeling performed using density function theory. The effect of relative humidity on the CS sensor has also been studied at ambient temperature, which demonstrated that the minimum and maximum (20-100%) relative humidity values revealed 16 and 62% response, respectively.
