Recent advances in emerging integrated anticorrosion and antifouling nanomaterial-based coating solutions

The rapid progress in the marine industry has resulted in notable challenges related to biofouling and surface corrosion on underwater infrastructure. Conventional coating techniques prioritise individual protective properties, such as offering either antifouling or anticorrosion protection. Current progress and innovations in nanomaterials and technologies have presented novel prospects and possibilities in the domain of integrated multifunctional coatings. These coatings can provide simultaneous protection against fouling and corrosion. This review study focuses on the potential applications of various nanomaterials, such as carbon-based nanostructures, nano-metal oxides, polymers, metal-organic frameworks, and nanoclays, in developing integrated multifunctional nano-based coatings. These emerging integrated multifunctional coating technologies recently developed and are currently in the first phases of development. The potential opportunities and challenges of incorporating nanomaterial-based composites into multifunctional coatings and their future prospects are discussed. This review aims to improve the reader's understanding of the integrated multifunctional nano-material composite coating design and encourage valuable contributions to its development.

Hydrophobicity of molecular-scale textured surfaces: The case of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks, an atomistic perspective

Hydrophobicity has proven fundamental in an inexhaustible amount of everyday applications. Material hydrophobicity is determined by chemical composition and geometrical characteristics of its macroscopic surface. Surface roughness or texturing enhances intrinsic hydrophilic or hydrophobic characteristics of a material. Here we consider crystalline surfaces presenting molecular-scale texturing typical of crystalline porous materials, e.g., metal-organic frameworks. In particular, we investigate one such material with remarkable hydrophobic qualities, ZIF-8. We show that ZIF-8 hydrophobicity is driven not only by its chemical composition but also its sub-nanoscale surface corrugations, a physical enhancement rare amongst hydrophobes. Studying ZIF-8's hydrophobic properties is challenging as experimentally it is difficult to distinguish between the materials' and the macroscopic corrugations' contributions to the hydrophobicity. The computational contact angle determination is also difficult as the standard "geometric" technique of liquid nanodroplet deposition is prone to many artifacts. Here, we characterise ZIF-8 hydrophobicity via: (i) the "geometric" approach and (ii) the "energetic" method, utilising the Young-Dupré formula and computationally determining the liquid-solid adhesion energy. Both approaches reveal nanoscale Wenzel-like bathing of the corrugated surface. Moreover, we illustrate the importance of surface linker termination in ZIF-8 hydrophobicity, which reduces when varied from sp3 N to sp2 N termination. We also consider halogenated analogues of the methyl-imidazole linker, which promote the transition from nanoWenzel-like to nanoCassie-Baxter-like states, further enhancing surface hydrophobicity. Present results reveal the complex interface physics and chemistry between water and complex porous, molecular crystalline surfaces, providing a hint to tune their hydrophobicity.

Enhancing Textile Water Repellency with Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and Hollow Silica Nanoparticles

Superhydrophobic coatings have attracted substantial attention owing to their potential application in various industries. Conventional textiles used in daily life are prone to staining with water and household liquids, necessitating the development of water-repellent and stain-resistant coatings. In this study, we fabricated a highly water-repellent superhydrophobic PET fabric by using an eco-friendly water-based coating process. Fluorine-free octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) solutions with various wt.% of hollow silica (HS) nanoparticles were used to produce a superhydrophobic surface via a facile dip coating method. Our findings revealed that the incorporation of HS nanoparticles substantially increased the water contact angle, with higher concentrations resulting in enhanced water repellency and increased surface roughness. The treated fabrics had a remarkable water contact angle of 152.4° ± 0.8°, demonstrating their superhydrophobic fiber surface. In addition, the durability of these superhydrophobic properties was investigated via a laundry procedure, which showed that the fabrics maintained their water repellency even after 20 laundering cycles. EDX and XRD analyses confirmed that the morphological evaluations did not reveal any substantial structural alterations. Significantly, the fibers maintained their strength and durability throughout the testing, enduring only minor hollow SiO2 nanoparticle loss. This eco-friendly and cost-effective method holds great potential for application in apparel and other industries, offering an effective solution to resist water stains and improve performance in various contexts.

Study on Applicability of Energy-Saving Devices to Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Ships

The decarbonisation of waterborne transport is arguably the biggest challenge faced by the maritime industry presently. By 2050, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry by 50% compared to 2008, with a vision to phase out fossil fuels by the end of the century as a matter of urgency. To meet such targets, action must be taken immediately to address the barriers to adopt the various clean shipping options currently at different technological maturity levels. Green hydrogen as an alternative fuel presents an attractive solution to meet future targets from international bodies and is seen as a viable contributor within a future clean shipping vision. The cost of hydrogen fuel—in the short-term at least—is higher compared to conventional fuel; therefore, energy-saving devices (ESDs) for ships are more important than ever, as implementation of rules and regulations restrict the use of fossil fuels while promoting zero-emission technology. However, existing and emerging ESDs in standalone/combination for traditional fossil fuel driven vessels have not been researched to assess their compatibility for hydrogen-powered ships, which present new challenges and considerations within their design and operation. Therefore, this review aims to bridge that gap by firstly identifying the new challenges that a hydrogen-powered propulsion system brings forth and then reviewing the quantitative energy saving capability and qualitive additional benefits of individual existing and emerging ESDs in standalone and combination, with recommendations for the most applicable ESD combinations with hydrogen-powered waterborne transport presented to maximise energy saving and minimise the negative impact on the propulsion system components. In summary, the most compatible combination ESDs for hydrogen will depend largely on factors such as vessel types, routes, propulsion, operation, etc. However, the mitigation of load fluctuations commonly encountered during a vessels operation was viewed to be a primary area of interest as it can have a negative impact on hydrogen propulsion system components such as the fuel cell; therefore, the ESD combination that can maximise energy savings as well as minimise the fluctuating loads experienced would be viewed as the most compatible with hydrogen-powered waterborne transport.

Study of Protective Layers Based on Crosslinked Glutaraldehyde/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane

In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel coatings based on (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (AP) mixed with different amounts of glutaraldehyde (GA). The synthesized coatings have been layered on a glass substrate and characterized by optical microscopy and roughness measurements, thermogravimetric analyses and differential scanning calorimetry, contact angle analysis, rheological measurement, and an adhesion test. It was observed that the higher the GA content (up to AP:GA ratio of 0.3), the sooner the crosslinking reaction starts, leading to a coating with increased hydrophobic and adhesion features without compromising the final AP cross-linked network. Hence, the obtained results show the effectiveness of AP modification with GA from the perspective of an application as protective coatings.

Super-alcohol-repellent coatings

HYPOTHESIS

Although a lot of fluorinated coatings exhibit super-repellency to oils with low surface tensions, most of them are readily wetted by alcohols with high surface tensions, wherein the un-crosslinked fluorinated silane is expected to result in the failure of alcohol-repellency. Hence, the coating could be super-repellent to alcohols if the fluorinated silane is fully crosslinked by annealing.

EXPERIMENTS

We fabricate the super-alcohol-repellent coating via covering sintered hollow silica nanospheres with perfluoroalkyl silane, followed by a simple two-step annealing. The surface chemistry of the coating is further examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

FINDINGS

The super-alcohol-repellent coating is remarkably super-repellent to diverse alcohols of surface tension from 20.9 to 64.8 mN m^-1 and thus enables loss-free manipulation of alcohol droplets for amino acid detection. More importantly, we reveal that the annealing procedure could promote the condensation of silanol groups, showing the key role played by heat-mediated crosslinking of perfluoroalkyl silane in preparing alcohol-repellent coatings. Such annealing strategy is also proved to be effective for other fluorinated coatings to achieve super alcohol-repellency. Together with its super-repellency to virtually all liquids, the coating enables loss-free processing of diverse liquids, thus being of significant value for biological, chemical and medical applications.

Fabrication of anti-scaling HDPE/fluorinated acrylate polymer/nano-silica composite for landfill leachate piping system

Clogging generally happens to the leachate piping system, which poses a risk to the environment. A low surface energy nanocomposite is prepared to mitigate the cloggings, by adding the fluorinated acrylate polymer and hydrophobically modified nano-silica into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) substrate. The best addition of the fluorinated acrylate polymer and the nano-silica is given as 15% and 5%, to produce the composite with a low surface energy of 29.4 mJ/m². Through the characterization of contact angle (CA), electrochemical corrosion, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), atomic force microscope (AFM) and thermogravimetry (TG), the composite shows low wettability, good corrosion resistance and thermal stability. The surface hydrophobic property of the composite remains unchanged after being immersed in an acidic (pH = 2) and an alkaline (pH = 12) solution, indicating that the prepared composite has strong adaptability to the extreme environments. In addition, the composite shows better anti-scaling performance than that of the commercial high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe materials by application of a dispensing leachate immersion test. The results provide insights into engineering practice for the design and manufacture of pipe materials for leachate collection and transport.

Micro/Nanopatterned Superhydrophobic Surfaces Fabrication for Biomolecules and Biomaterials Manipulation and Analysis

Superhydrophobic surfaces display an extraordinary repulsion to water and water-based solutions. This effect emerges from the interplay of intrinsic hydrophobicity of the surface and its morphology. These surfaces have been established for a long time and have been studied for decades. The increasing interest in recent years has been focused towards applications in many different fields and, in particular, biomedical applications. In this paper, we review the progress achieved in the last years in the fabrication of regularly patterned superhydrophobic surfaces in many different materials and their exploitation for the manipulation and characterization of biomaterial, with particular emphasis on the issues affecting the yields of the fabrication processes and the quality of the manufactured devices.

Bifunctional poly (l-lactic acid)/hydrophobic silica nanocomposite layer coated on magnesium stents for enhancing corrosion resistance and endothelial cell responses

Biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based vascular stents can overcome the limitations of conventional permanent metallic stents, such as late in-stent restenosis and thrombosis, but still have difficulty retarding degradation while providing adequate mechanical support to the blood vessel. We incorporated silica nanoparticles surface-functionalized with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (mSiNP) into a poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) coating as a physical barrier to disturb the penetration of the corrosive medium as well as a bioactive source that releases silicon ions capable of stimulating endothelial cells. The corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of this bifunctional PLLA/mSiNP nanocomposite coating were investigated using different weight ratios of mSiNP. The nanocomposite coating containing more than 10 wt% of the mSiNP (PLLA/10mSiNP and PLLA/20mSiNP) significantly delayed the corrosion of the Mg substrate and exhibited favorable endothelial cell responses, compared to the pure PLLA coating. Specifically, the calculated corrosion rates of PLLA/10mSiNP and PLLA/20mSiNP decreased by half, indicating the durability of the coating after immersion in simulated body fluid for 12 days. Based on the in vitro cellular response, the incorporation of the mSiNPs into the PLLA coating significantly improved the endothelial cell responses to the Mg substrate, showing better initial cell surface coverage, migration, and proliferation rate than those of pure PLLA. These results indicate that the PLLA/mSiNP nanocomposite coatings have significant potential to improve the corrosion resistance and vascular compatibility of biodegradable Mg-based vascular stents.

Critical Amphiphilic Concentration: Effect of the Extent of Amphiphilicity on Marine Fouling-Release Performance

Amphiphilic surfaces, containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains, offer desirable performance for many applications such as marine coatings or anti-icing purposes. This work explores the effect of the concentration of amphiphilic moieties on converting a polyurethane (PU) system to a coating having fouling-release properties. A novel amphiphilic compound is synthesized and added at increasing amounts to a PU system, where the amount of the additive is the only variable in the study. The additive-modified surfaces are characterized by a variety of techniques including ATR-FTIR, XPS, contact angle measurements, and AFM. Surface characterizations indicate the presence of amphiphilic domains on the surface due to the introduction of the self-stratifying amphiphilic additive. The fouling-release properties of the surfaces are assessed with three biological assays using Ulva linza, Cellulophaga lytica, and Navicula Incerta as the test organisms. A change in the fouling-release performance is observed and plateaued once a certain amount of amphiphilicity is attained in the coating system, which we call the critical amphiphilic concentration (CAC).

Mechanical Properties of Protective Coatings against Marine Fouling: A Review

The accumulation of marine organisms on ship hulls, such as microorganisms, barnacles, and seaweeds, represents a global problem for maritime industries, with both economic and environmental costs. The use of biocide-containing paints poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems, affecting both target and non-target organisms driving science and technology towards non-biocidal solutions based on physico-chemical and materials properties of coatings. The review reports recent development of hydrophobic protective coatings in terms of mechanical properties, correlated with the wet ability features. The attention is focused mainly on coatings based on siloxane and epoxy resin due to the wide application fields of such systems in the marine industry. Polyurethane and other systems have been considered as well. These coatings for anti-fouling applications needs to be both long-term mechanically stable, perfectly adherent with the metallic/composite substrate, and capable to detach/destroy the fouling organism. Prospects should focus on developing even “greener” antifouling coatings solutions. These coatings should also be readily addressable to industrial scale-up for large-scale product distribution, possibly at a reasonable cost.

Research Strategies to Develop Environmentally Friendly Marine Antifouling Coatings

There are a large number of fouling organisms in the ocean, which easily attach to the surface of ships, oil platforms and breeding facilities, corrode the surface of equipment, accelerate the aging of equipment, affect the stability and safety of marine facilities and cause serious economic losses. Antifouling coating is an effective method to prevent marine biological fouling. Traditional organic tin and copper oxide coatings are toxic and will contaminate seawater and destroy marine ecology and have been banned or restricted. Environmentally friendly antifouling coatings have become a research hotspot. Among them, the use of natural biological products with antifouling activity as antifouling agents is an important research direction. In addition, some fouling release coatings without antifoulants, biomimetic coatings, photocatalytic coatings and other novel antifouling coatings have also developed rapidly. On the basis of revealing the mechanism of marine biofouling, this paper reviews the latest research strategies to develop environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings. The composition, antifouling characteristics, antifouling mechanism and effects of various coatings were analyzed emphatically. Finally, the development prospects and future development directions of marine antifouling coatings are forecasted.

Hybrid Sol-gel Coatings for Corrosion Mitigation: A Critical Review

The corrosion process is a major source of metallic material degradation, particularly in aggressive environments, such as marine ones. Corrosion progression affects the service life of a given metallic structure, which may end in structural failure, leakage, product loss and environmental pollution linked to large financial costs. According to NACE, the annual cost of corrosion worldwide was estimated, in 2016, to be around 3%-4% of the world's gross domestic product. Therefore, the use of methodologies for corrosion mitigation are extremely important. The approaches used can be passive or active. A passive approach is preventive and may be achieved by emplacing a barrier layer, such as a coating that hinders the contact of the metallic substrate with the aggressive environment. An active approach is generally employed when the corrosion is set in. That seeks to reduce the corrosion rate when the protective barrier is already damaged and the aggressive species (i.e., corrosive agents) are in contact with the metallic substrate. In this case, this is more a remediation methodology than a preventive action, such as the use of coatings. The sol-gel synthesis process, over the past few decades, gained remarkable importance in diverse areas of application. Sol-gel allows the combination of inorganic and organic materials in a single-phase and has led to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) coatings for several applications, including for corrosion mitigation. This manuscript succinctly reviews the fundamentals of sol-gel concepts and the parameters that influence the processing techniques. The state-of-the-art of the OIH sol-gel coatings reported in the last few years for corrosion protection, are also assessed. Lastly, a brief perspective on the limitations, standing challenges and future perspectives of the field are critically discussed.

Synthesis and characterization of protective silica reinforced hybrid poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/acrylate/silane nanocomposite coatings

SiO₂NP reinforced hybrid poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/acrylate/silane nanocomposite coatings are resistant to steel corrosion. SiO₂NPs toughen the mechanical strength and increase the gross contact angle of coatings, also delay underfilm steel corrosion.

In-situ activated nanoparticle as an efficient and recyclable foam stabilizer for enhancing foam separation of LAS

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is a particular member of the emerging contaminants, because of its increasingly ubiquitous use and tremendous harm to the environment and wastewater treatment plant. Herein, we develop a novel two-stage foam separation to recover LAS (18.7-91.0 mg/L) from laundry wastewater. We first reported the fabrication of activated silica nanoparticle (SNP) via a facile and scalable in-situ approach. To obtain a desirable surface property, the key design element was the utilization of amphoteric surfactant, viz. cocamidopropyl betaine, as the modifier. In the first-stage, activated SNP could serve as an efficient foam stabilizer to improve the foam stability and the interfacial adsorption of LAS. Remarkably, LAS concentration in effluent decreased to very low levels of 1.9-2.9 mg/L with a proper enrichment ratio, and met the emission standard. In the second-stage, we originally adopted the intensification of liquid drainage to selectively recycle activated SNP from LAS. An inclined foam channel (IFC) covered by hydrophobic coating was constructed and the maximum recovery percentage of SNP reached 91.5%, indicating that the activated SNP was recyclable. This work definitely proves that the integration of nanotechnology in foam separation can make wastewater treatment more efficient and less expensive.

Hydrolyzable Additive-Based Silicone Elastomers: A New Approach for Antifouling Coatings

Fouling Release Coatings are marine antifouling coatings based on silicone elastomers. Contrary to commonly used biocide-based antifouling coatings, they do not release biocides into the marine environment, however, they suffer from poor antifouling efficacy during idle periods. To improve their antifouling performances in static conditions, various amounts of hydrolyzable polymers were incorporated within a silicone matrix. These hydrolyzable polymers were chosen for the well-known hydrolytic degradation mechanism of their main chain, e.g. poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), or of their ester pending groups, e.g. poly(bis(trimethylsilyloxy)methylsilyl methacrylate) (PMATM2). The degradation kinetics of such hydrolyzable silicone coatings were assessed by mass loss measurements during immersion in deionized water. Coatings containing PMATM2 exhibited a maximum mass loss after 12 weeks, whereas PCL-based coatings showed no significant mass loss after 24 weeks. Dynamic contact angle measurements revealed the modifications of the coatings surface chemistry with an amphiphilic behavior after water exposure. The attachment of macrofoulers on these coatings were evaluated by field tests in the Mediterranean Sea, demonstrating the short or long-term antifouling effect of these hydrolyzable polymers embedded in the silicone matrix. The settlement of A. amphitrite barnacles on the different coatings indicated inhospitable behaviors towards larval barnacles for coatings with at least 15 wt % of additives.

Multistimulus Responsive Actuator with GO and Carbon Nanotube/PDMS Bilayer Structure for Flexible and Smart Devices

Smart devices with abilities of perceiving, processing, and responding are attracting more and more attentions due to the emerging development of artificial intelligent systems, especially in biomimetic and intelligent robotics fields. Designing a smart actuator with high flexibility and multistimulation responsive behaviors to simulate the movement of creatures, such as weight lifting, heavy objects carrying via simple materials, and structural design is highly demanded for the development of intelligent systems. Herein, a soft actuator that can produce reversible deformations under the control of light, thermal, and humidity is fabricated by combining high photothermal properties of CNT/PDMS layer with the natural hydrophilic GO layer. Due to the asymmetric double-layer structure, the novel bilayer membrane-based actuator showed different bending directions under photothermal and humidity stimulations, resulting in bidirectional controllable bending behaviors. In addition, the actuation behaviors can be well controlled by directionally aligning the graphene oxide onto carbon nanotube/PDMS layer. The actuator can be fabricated into a series of complex biomimetic devices, such as, simulated biomimetic fingers, smart "tweezers", humidity control switches, which has great potential applications in flexible robots, artificial muscles, and optical control medical devices.

TiO2-coated Hollow Glass Microspheres with Superhydrophobic and High IR-reflective Properties Synthesized by a Soft-chemistry Method

This manuscript proposes a soft-chemistry method to develop superhydrophobic and highly IR-reflective hollow glass microspheres (HGM). The anatase TiO2 and a superhydrophobic agent were coated on the HGM surface in one step. TBT and PFOTES were selected as the Ti source and the superhydrophobic agent, respectively. They were both coated on the HGM, and after the hydrothermal process, the TBT turned to anatase TiO2. In this way, a PFOTES/TiO2-coated HGM (MCHGM) was prepared. For comparison, PFOTES single-coated HGM (F-SCHGM) and TiO2 single-coated HGM (Ti-SCHGM) were synthesized as well. The PFOTES and TiO2 coatings on the HGM surface were demonstrated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive detector (EDS) characterizations. The MCHGM showed a higher contact angle (153°) but a lower sliding angle (16°) than F-SCHGM, with a contact angle of 141.2° and a sliding angle of 67°. In addition, both Ti-SCHGM and MCHGM displayed similar IR reflectivity values, which were about 5.8% higher than the original HGM and F-SCHGM. Also, the PFOTES coating barely changed the thermal conductivity. Therefore, F-SCHGM, with a thermal conductivity of 0.0479 W/(m·K), was quite like the original HGM, which was 0.0475 W/(m·K). MCHGM and Ti-SCHGM were also similar. Their thermal conductivity values were 0.0543 W/(m·K) and 0.0543 W/(m·K), respectively. The TiO2 coating slightly increased the thermal conductivity, but with the increase in reflectivity, the overall heat-insulation property was enhanced. Finally, since the IR-reflecting property is provided by the HGM coating, if the coating is fouled, the reflectivity decreases. Therefore, with the superhydrophobic coating, the surface is protected from fouling, and its lifetime is also prolonged.

Facile fabrication of raspberry-like composite microspheres for the construction of superhydrophobic films and applications in highly efficient oil–water separation

Inspired by the “lotus effect”, we proposed a facile synthetic route toward raspberry-like PS@SiO₂ microspheres, which further lead to superhydrophobic surfaces.
