Fabrication of magnetic field induced structural colored films with tunable colors and its application on security materials

Stimulus-responsive nonclose-packed photonic crystals: fabrications and applications

Stimulus-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) possessing unconventional nonclosely packed structures have received growing attention due to their unique capability of mimicking the active structural colors of natural organisms (for example, chameleons' mechanochromic properties). However, there is rarely any systematic review regarding the progress of nonclose-packed photonic crystals (NPCs), involving their fabrication, working mechanisms, and applications. Herein, a comprehensive review of the fundamental principles and practical fabrication strategies of one/two/three-dimensional NPCs is summarized from the perspective of designing nonclose-packed structures. Subsequently, responsive NPCs with exciting functions and working mechanisms are sorted and delineated according to their diverse responses to physical (force, temperature, magnetic, and electric fields), chemical (ions, pH, vapors, and solvents), and biological (glucose, organophosphate, creatinine, and bacteria) stimuli. We then systematically introduced and discussed the applications of NPCs in sensors, printing, anticounterfeiting, display, optical devices, etc. Finally, the current challenges and development prospects for NPCs are presented. This review not only concludes the design principle for NPCs but also provides a significant basis for the exploration of next-generation NPCs.

Versatile Double Bandgap Photonic Crystals of High Color Saturation

Double bandgap photonic crystals (PCs) exhibit significant potential for applications in various color display-related fields. However, they show low color saturation and inadequate color modulation capabilities. This study presents a viable approach to the fabrication of double bandgap photonic inks diffracting typical secondary colors and other composite colors by simply mixing two photonic nanochains (PNCs) of different primary colors as pigments in an appropriate percentage following the conventional RGB color matching method. In this approach, the PNCs are magnetically responsive and display three primary colors that can be synthesized by combining hydrogen bond-guided and magnetic field (H)-assisted template polymerization. The as-prepared double bandgap photonic inks present high color saturation due to the fixed and narrow full-width at half-maxima of the parent PNCs with a suitable chain length. Furthermore, they can be used to easily produce a flexible double bandgap PC film by embedding the PNCs into a gel, such as polyacrylamide, facilitating fast steady display performance without the requirement of an external magnetic field. This research not only presents the unique advantages of PNCs in constructing multi-bandgap PCs but also establishes the feasibility of utilizing PNCs in practical applications within the fields of anti-counterfeiting and flexible wearable devices.

Magnetic field responsive microspheres with tunable structural colors by controlled assembly of nanoparticles

Dynamic color tuning has many useful applications in nature for communication, camouflage, mood indication, etc. Structural colors have more advanced applications due to their ability to respond to external stimuli by dynamically changing color. In this work, we proposed an efficient method to prepare magneto-chromatic microspheres with tunable structural color. Through a microfluidic technique, the magneto-chromatic microspheres containing Fe₃O₄@C magnetic particles were continuously prepared. The size of the microspheres decreases with the increase of PVA solution phase to ETPTA phase flow rate ratio. Furthermore, the microspheres with larger sizes more easily form close packed structures. Microspheres can be constrained in PVA to form a free-standing film after the evaporation of water in PVA solution. The PVA film could display tunable brilliant structural colors when an external magnetic field is applied. Moreover, microspheres with fixed structural colors can also be acquired by polymerizing microspheres under UV light under an external magnetic field.

The untapped potential of magnetic nanoparticles for forensic investigations: A comprehensive review

With a growing interest in precise and sensitive diagnosis for criminal investigations, nanoparticles (NPs) have intrigued scientific minds working in the field of forensic science due to their exceptional properties. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have emerged as a powerful tool for improving forensic analysis due to their super magnetic behavior combined with smaller dimensions. MNP-based applications can benefit criminologists to solve criminal mysteries with greater precision and pace. This review highlights the different types of MNP-based applications and their developmental and implicational aspects of forensic science. It also renders insight into the future prospects of a splendid blend of nanotechnology and forensic science, leading to a better scientific analysis.

Rewritable color nanoprints in antimony trisulfide films

Materials that exhibit large and rapid switching of their optical properties in the visible spectrum hold the key to color-changing devices. Antimony trisulfide (Sb₂S₃) is a chalcogenide material that exhibits large refractive index changes of ~1 between crystalline and amorphous states. However, little is known about its ability to endure multiple switching cycles, its capacity for recording high-resolution patterns, nor the optical properties of the crystallized state. Unexpectedly, we show that crystalline Sb₂S₃ films that are just 20 nm thick can produce substantial birefringent phase retardation. We also report a high-speed rewritable patterning approach at subdiffraction resolutions (>40,000 dpi) using 780-nm femtosecond laser pulses. Partial reamorphization is demonstrated and then used to write and erase multiple microscale color images with a wide range of colors over a ~120-nm band in the visible spectrum. These solid-state, rapid-switching, and ultrahigh-resolution color-changing devices could find applications in nonvolatile ultrathin displays.

Thermochromic Hydrogel-Functionalized Textiles for Synchronous Visual Monitoring of On-Demand In Vitro Drug Release

In vitro drug release systems have recently received tremendous attention because they allow noninvasive, convenient, and prolonged administration of pharmacological agents. On-demand epidermal drug release systems can improve treatment efficiency, prevent multidrug resistance, and minimize drug toxicity to healthy cells. In addition, real-time monitoring of drug content is also essential for guiding the determination of drug dosage and replacing drug carriers in time. Therefore, it is important to integrate the above properties in one ideal epidermal patch. Herein, photonic crystals (PCs) based on Fe₃O₄@C nanoparticles were introduced into drug-loaded poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(NIPAM-AAc)) hydrogel-functionalized textiles. Drug loading and release depended on the expansion and contraction of the hydrogels. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the hydrogels was adjusted to 40 °C, which is higher than the skin temperature, by varying the content of hydrophilic comonomer acrylic acid (AAc) to store the drug at room temperature, and on-demand release was achieved by mild thermal stimulation. Moreover, the lattice spacing (d) of PCs varied with the expansion and contraction of the hydrogels, which can cause the color of P(NIPAM-AAc) hydrogel-functionalized textiles to change. These synchronous thermoresponsive chromic drug uptake and release behaviors provided an effective method for visual and real-time monitoring of drug content. Furthermore, in view of the poor mechanical properties of hydrogel wound dressings, textile matrices were composited to prevent holistic breaking during the stretching process. Biological experiments proved that the drug-loaded P(NIPAM-AAc) hydrogel-functionalized textiles had good antibacterial properties and wound-healing effects.

Thermally Responsive Photonic Fibers Consisting of Chained Nanoparticles

Fibers that can reversibly and passively change colors along with body temperatures are highly desired for potential applications including temperature sensors, smart wearables, and photonic devices. Here, we develop a facile strategy to fabricate thermochromic photonic fibers, which could exhibit tunable structural colors as a function of temperatures. The thermochromic fibers are prepared by aligning superparamagnetic, carbon-encapsulated Fe₃O₄ colloidal nanocrystal clusters (Fe₃O₄@C CNCs) in a thermoresponsive hydrogel, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), forming chain-like structures under an external magnetic field before gelation. When the fiber is transferred from air to water at room temperature, it changes color from dark green to red as it swells. The red color can be reversibly changed back to green as the temperature is raised to 36 °C, while the fiber shrinks and the reflection peak shifts from 642 to 494 nm. The swelling of the fiber is anisotropic: by 60% in the diameter direction but 45% in the length direction. Therefore, the fiber can act as a thermochromic actuator.

Photonics in nature and bioinspired designs: sustainable approaches for a colourful world

Biological systems possess nanoarchitectures that have evolved for specific purposes and whose ability to modulate the flow of light creates an extraordinary diversity of natural photonic structures. In particular, the striking beauty of the structural colouration observed in nature has inspired technological innovation in many fields. Intense research has been devoted to mimicking the unique vivid colours with newly designed photonic structures presenting stimuli-responsive properties, with remarkable applications in health care, safety and security. This review highlights bioinspired photonic approaches in this context, starting by presenting many appealing examples of structural colours in nature, followed by describing the versatility of fabrication methods and designed coloured structures. A particular focus is given to optical sensing for medical diagnosis, food control and environmental monitoring, which has experienced a significant growth, especially considering the advances in obtaining inexpensive miniaturized systems, more reliability, fast responses, and the use of label-free layouts. Additionally, naturally derived biomaterials and synthetic polymers are versatile and fit many different structural designs that are underlined. Progress in bioinspired photonic polymers and their integration in novel devices is discussed since recent developments have emerged to lift the expectations of smart, flexible, wearable and portable sensors. The discussion is expanded to give emphasis on additional functionalities offered to related biomedical applications and the use of structural colours in new sustainable strategies that could meet the needs of technological development.

Structurally colored protease responsive nanoparticle hydrogels with degradation-directed assembly

A tunable protease responsive nanoparticle hydrogel (PRNH) that demonstrates large non-iridescent color changes due to a degradation-directed assembly of nanoparticles is reported. Structurally colored composites are fabricated with silica particles, 4-arm poly(ethylene glycol) norbornene (4PEGN), and a proteolytically degradable peptide. When placed in a protease solution, the peptide crosslinks degrade causing electrostatic binding and adsorption of the polymer to the particle surface which leads to the assembly of particles into compact amorphous arrays with structural color. The particle surface charge and size is investigated to probe their effect on the assembly mechanism. Interestingly, only PRNHs with highly negative particle surface charge exhibit color changes after degradation. Ultra-small angle X-ray scattering revealed that the particles become coated in polymer after degradation, producing a material with less order compared to the initial state. Altering the particle diameter modulates the composites' color, and all sizes investigated (178-297 nm) undergo the degradation-directed assembly. Varying the amount of 4PEGN adjusts the swollen PRNH color and has no effect on the degradation-directed assembly. Taken together, the effects of surface charge, particle size, and polymer concentration allow for the formulation of new design rules for fabricating tunable PRNHs that display vivid changes in structural color upon degradation.

Microfluidic spinning of editable polychromatic fibers

Chromatic fibers that change color in response to external stimuli are expected to be widely used in various applications such as anti-counterfeiting, military camouflage, and wearable displays. Advanced chromatic fibers with polychromatic and editable color properties behavior are strongly desired for practical applications but have not yet been realized using existing spinning technologies. Here, we present the low-cost, continuous microfluidic spinning of editable polychromatic polylactide (PLA) fibers. The structure and performance of the polychromatic PLA fibers were precisely controlled by adjusting the parameters used in microfluidic spinning. The structure of the as-spun products evolved through three different stages based on the editable encapsulation of functional materials into the PLA matrix. Fibers with versatile performance were achieved. A beaded polychromatic PLA fiber showed the possibility to delivery coded information through its editable chromatic behavior. A core-shell polychromatic PLA fiber showed good mechanical properties and knittability, which make it promising to fabricate smart color-changing textiles.

Recent Advances in Colloidal Photonic Crystal-Based Anti-Counterfeiting Materials

Colloidal photonic crystal (PC)-based anti-counterfeiting materials have been widely studied due to their inimitable structural colors and tunable photonic band gaps (PBGs) as well as their convenient identification methods. In this review, we summarize recent developments of colloidal PCs in the field of anti-counterfeiting from aspects of security strategies, design, and fabrication principles, and identification means. Firstly, an overview of the strategies for constructing PC anti-counterfeiting materials composed of variable color PC patterns, invisible PC prints, and several other PC anti-counterfeiting materials is presented. Then, the synthesis methods, working principles, security level, and specific identification means of these three types of PC materials are discussed in detail. Finally, the summary of strengths and challenges, as well as development prospects in the attractive research field, are presented.

Self-assembled colloidal arrays for structural color

Structural color materials that are colloidally assembled as inspired by nature are attracting increased interest in a wide range of research fields. The assembly of colloidal particles provides a facile and cost-effective strategy for fabricating three-dimensional structural color materials. In this review, the generation mechanisms of structural colors from colloidally assembled photonic crystalline structures (PCSs) and photonic amorphous structures (PASs) are first presented, followed by the state-of-the-art and detailed technologies for their fabrication. The variable optical properties of PASs and PCSs are then discussed, focusing on their spatial long- and short-order structures and surface topography, followed by a detailed description of the modulation of structural color by refractive index and lattice distance. Finally, the current applications of structural color materials colloidally assembled in various fields including biomaterials, microfluidic chips, sensors, displays, and anticounterfeiting are reviewed, together with future applications and tasks to be accomplished.

Hairy Polydopamine Particles as Platforms for Photonic and Magnetic Materials

By selecting the core materials and grafted-hair polymers, hairy particles with polymer brushes can create various types of functional materials. In recent years, polydopamine (PDA) particles that are obtained by polymerizing dopamine, which is an amino acid derivative, have attracted attention for various applications. Herein, we present a novel approach for creating photonic and magnetic materials from hairy PDA particles. By grafting a hydrophilic hair polymer, we have succeeded in producing photonic materials capable of structural color changes. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the preparation of magnetic materials by immobilizing holmium, which is one of the lanthanide elements, by electrostatic interactions onto a cationic hair polymer. These results demonstrate the possibility of hairy PDA particles for a wide range of applications, such as for photonic and magnetic materials.

Bioinspired Stimuli-Responsive Color-Changing Systems

Stimuli-responsive colors are a unique characteristic of certain animals, evolved as either a method to hide from enemies and prey or to communicate their presence to rivals or mates. From a material science perspective, the solutions developed by Mother Nature to achieve these effects are a source of inspiration to scientists for decades. Here, an updated overview of the literature on bioinspired stimuli-responsive color-changing systems is provided. Starting from natural systems, which are the source of inspiration, a classification of the different solutions proposed is given, based on the stimuli used to trigger the color-changing effect.

Micropatterning of Multiple Photonic Colloidal Crystal Gels for Flexible Structural Color Films

We herein report the micropatterning of flexible multiple photonic colloidal crystal gels (PCCGs) using single-layered microchannels. These patterned PCCGs exhibit structural colors that can be tuned by adjustment of the diameter and concentration of the colloidal particles in precursor solutions of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) or polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA). The precursor solutions containing dispersed colloidal particles were selectively injected into single-layered microchannels where they polymerized rapidly. The shape, density, and height of the patterned PCCG pixels were determined by the microchannels, which in turn determined the optical properties of the PCCG arrays. Furthermore, the preparation of three different types of PCCGs exhibiting three different structural colors at a high pixel density was demonstrated successfully using the single-layered polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannels. Finally, the optical reflective properties and the mechanical flexibility of the patterned multiple PCCG arrays were evaluated. We expect that our method for the preparation of such patterned PCCG arrays will contribute to the development of flexible optical devices.
