Enhanced chiral recognition by β-cyclodextrin at liquid/liquid interfaces as revealed by chromatographic and interfacial tension measurements

One-pot synthesis of novel chitosan-salicylaldehyde polymer composites for ammonia sensing

Chitosan (Chs)-salicylaldehyde (Sal) polymer derivatives were formed via the reaction of Chs-Sal with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD). These polymers were synthesized through inclusion with β-CD and doping with ZnO NPs to give pseudopolyrotaxane and Chs-Sal/ZnO NPs composite, respectively, for low-temperature detection and sensing of NH3 vapors as great significance in environmental control and human health. Additionally, the polymer (Chs-Sal/β-CD/ZnO NPs) was prepared via the insertion of generated composite (Chs-Sal/ZnO NPs) through β-cyclodextrin ring. The structural and morphological characterizations of the synthesized derivatives were confirmed by utilizing FTIR, XRD and, SEM, respectively. Also, the optical properties and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) of the synthesized polymers were explored. The obtained results confirmed that using β-CD or ZnO NPs for modification of polymer (Chs-Sal) dramatically enhanced thermal stability and optical features of the synthesized polymers. Investigations on the NH3-sensing properties of Chs-Sal/β-CD/ZnO NPs composite were carried out at concentrations down to 10 ppm and good response and recovery times (650 s and 350 s, respectively) at room temperature (RT) and indicated that modification by β-CD and doping with ZnO NPs effectively improves the NH3-sensing response of Chs-Sal from 712 to 6192 using Chs-Sal/β-CD/ZnO NPs, respectively, with low LOD and LOQ of 0.12 and 0.4 ppb, respectively.

Chirality Discrimination at Binary Organic|Water Interfaces Monitored by Interfacial Tension Measurements with Preliminary Comparison with Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Chirality discrimination at a binary toluene (organic)/water(aqueous) interface between R- or S-Tol-BINAP (2,2'-Bis(di-p-tolylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl) molecules and the water-soluble serine chiral specie is examined for the first time, using a combination of interfacial tension measurements and molecular dynamic simulations. Experimental interfacial measurements exhibit a clear chirality-controlled difference when a homochiral versus a heterochiral enantiomeric pairs are introduced at the interfaces. The related molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental results and provide further molecular insight of intermolecular interactions at the interfaces. The results indicate that interfacial tension measurements can capture the preferential interactions which exist between different pairs of enantiomers at the binary interfaces, opening up a new way for probing chirality discrimination at liquid-liquid interfaces.

Establishment and Molecular Modeling Study of Cyclodextrin-Based Synergistic Enantioseparation Systems with Three New Amino Acid Chiral Ionic Liquids as Additives in Capillary Electrophoresis

Chiral ionic liquids (CILs) have attracted more and more attention due to their superior performance as chiral additives in capillary electrophoresis. In this work, based on the cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives and three new amino acid CILs (trifluoroacetate-L-Hydroxyproline, nitric acid-L-Hydroxyproline and trifluoroacetate-L-threonine), the new synergistic systems were established for chiral drug separation. In contrast to the traditional single glucosyl-β-CD (Glu-β-CD) separation system, the CIL/Glu-β-CD synergistic systems achieved improved resolution of three model drug racemates. Some experimental variables, such as CIL concentration, Glu-β-CD concentration, buffer pH, applied voltage, and the type and proportion of organic modifier, were optimized in the trifluoroacetate-L-Hydroxyproline/Glu-β-CD synergistic system. In addition, the recognition process in the synergistic system was studied through the molecular modeling method.

Recent advances in chiral discrimination on host-guest functionalized interfaces

Chiral discrimination has gained much focus in supramolecular chemistry, since it is one of the fundamental processes in biological systems, enantiomeric separation and biochemical sensors. Though most of the biochemical processes can routinely recognize biological enantiomers, enantioselective identification of chiral molecules in artificial systems is currently one of the challenging topics in the field of chiral discrimination. Inaccuracy, low separation efficiency and expensive instrumentation were considered typical problems in artificial systems. Recently, chiral recognition on the interfaces has been widely used in the fields of electrochemical detection and biochemical sensing. For the moment, a series of macrocyclic host functionalized interfaces have been developed for use as chiral catalysts or for enantiomeric separation. Here, we have briefly exposited the most recent advances in the fabrication of supramolecular functionalized interfaces and their application for chiral recognition.
