Cu(II)-Schiff base covalently anchored to MIL-125(Ti)-NH2 as heterogeneous catalyst for oxidation reactions

A sustainable protocol for selective alcohols oxidation using a novel iron-based metal organic framework (MOF-BASU1)

The selective oxidation of active and inactive alcohol substrates is a highly versatile conversion that poses a challenge in controlling the functionality and adjustments on MOFs. On the other hand, it offers an attractive opportunity to expand their applications in designing the next generation of catalysts with improved performance. Herein, a novel iron-based MOF containing sulfonamide (MOF-BASU1) has been fabricated by the reaction of 1,3-benzene disulfonylchloride linker and FeCl3·6H2O. Based on the results, the active surface area of the synthesized MOF is large, which highlights its unique catalytic activity. Optimum conditions were reached after 0.5-2 h, with 15 mg loading of the synthesized MOF under optimal conditions. Furthermore, the turnover frequency was 18-77.6 h-1, which is comparable to values previously reported for this process. Overall, the high catalytic activity observed for MOF-BASU1 might be because of the obtained high surface area and the Lewis acidic Fe nodes. Furthermore, the MOF-BASU1 revealed a remarkable chemoselectivity for aldehydes in the presence of aliphatic alcohols. Overall, the high product yields, facile recovery of nanocatalysts, short reaction times, and broad substrate range make this process environmentally friendly, practical, and economically justified.

Recent advances of metal-organic framework-based and derivative materials in the heterogeneous catalytic removal of volatile organic compounds

Since the environmental hazards of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are well known, heterogeneous catalysis has become one of the most popular methods to treat VOCs due to its environmental friendliness and simplicity of operation. Although a large number of reports have reviewed the application of catalytic oxidation for the degradation of VOCs, relatively few reports are based on this direction of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF derivatives. Herein, this paper reviews the recent applications of heterogeneous catalytic technologies in the degradation of VOCs, including photocatalysis, thermal catalysis and other catalytic approaches. The applications of MOFs and their derivatives in VOCs degradation, such as the progress of MOF-derived metal oxides in the treatment of toluene, were highlighted. The mechanisms of VOCs degradation by different catalytic approaches were systematically presented. Finally, we presented the views and directions of VOCs treatment technology development. We hope that this reaction type-oriented review will provide important insights into MOFs and MOF-derived materials for VOCs pollution control.

Vanadium(VIV)-Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Synergistic Bimetallic Activation of Inert C(sp3)-H Bonds

Activation and selective functionalization of inert C(sp³)-H bonds remain one of the most challenging tasks in current synthetic chemistry. Herein, by decorating vanadium(V^IV)-porphyrin into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to stabilize the active tertbutyl peroxide radical, we reported a new approach to accomplish inert C(sp³)-H bond activation by a synergistic bimetallic strategy via a hydrogen atom transfer process under mild conditions. The stabilized peroxide radical by V^IV-porphyrin-based MOFs abstracted a hydrogen atom from the inert C(sp³)-H bonds for direct oxidization transformation utilizing environmentally friendly oxygen. Taking advantage of the high stability of Zr₆ clusters, the new Zr-MOF was recyclable six times without a conversion efficiency decrease. From this foundation, {Mn₃(μ₃-O)} cluster nodes with potential unsaturated coordinated sites were introduced into MOFs to replace Zr₆ clusters, realizing the pre-activation of substrates through the interaction between Mn nodes and substrates. The synergistic bimetallic activation effect of V^IV-porphyrin and Mn nodes dramatically promoted the conversion efficiency and product selectivity for inert C(sp³)-H bond functionalization.

Light-assisted coupling of phenols with CO2 to 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes catalyzed by a g-C3N4/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) composite

The present work described a novel photocatalytic approach for the synthesis of 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes from the coupling of phenols and CO2 in the presence of a base using a graphitic carbon nitride/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) composite under mild conditions.

Amino-functionalized Ti-metal-organic framework decorated BiOI sphere for simultaneous elimination of Cr(VI) and tetracycline

A subtle flower-like MIL-125-NH₂@BiOI was fabricated by a facile solvothermal method for simultaneously eliminating Cr(VI)/tetracycline mixed pollutants under visible light. The strong interaction between amino in MIL-125-NH₂ and Bi³⁺ of BiOI promotes the formation of this unique inlaid structure and enables the favorable contact between MIL-125-NH₂ and BiOI, thus accelerating the transfer of charge carriers. Remarkably, MIL-125-NH₂@BiOI displays a superior activity compared with that of two monomers for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of tetracycline. More significantly, the photocatalytic efficiency can be further boosted in the coexistence of Cr(VI) and tetracycline, which is 1.8 and 1.6 times that of single Cr(VI) and tetracycline, respectively. The synergistic effect between Cr(VI) reduction and tetracycline oxidative degradation can further facilitate the separation of photo-induced electrons and holes, resulting in the improved efficiencies in the Cr(VI)/tetracycline coexistent environment. This work sheds light on that MOF-based photocatalysts possess huge potential for practical environmental remediation.

The Origin of Catalytic Benzylic C-H Oxidation over a Redox-Active Metal-Organic Framework

Selective oxidation of benzylic C-H compounds to ketones is important for the production of a wide range of fine chemicals, and is often achieved using toxic or precious metal catalysts. Herein, we report the efficient oxidation of benzylic C-H groups in a broad range of substrates under mild conditions over a robust metal-organic framework material, MFM-170, incorporating redox-active [Cu2 II (O2 CR)4 ] paddlewheel nodes. A comprehensive investigation employing electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction has identified the critical role of the paddlewheel moiety in activating the oxidant t BuOOH (tert-butyl hydroperoxide) via partial reduction to [CuII CuI (O2 CR)4 ] species.

Identification of key oxidative intermediates and the function of chromium dopants in PKU-8: catalytic dehydrogenation of sec-alcohols with tert-butylhydroperoxide

t-BuOO* activated by Cr-PKU-8 from TBHP is the key intermediate to the highly selective dehydrogenation of sec-alcohols.

A Pyridyltriazol Functionalized Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework for Selective and Highly Efficient Adsorption of Palladium

This work reports the synthesis of pyridyltriazol-functionalized UiO-66 (UiO stands for University of Oslo), namely, UiO-66-Pyta, from UiO-66-NH₂ through three postsynthetic modification (PSM) steps. The good performance of the material derives from the observation that partial formylation (∼21% of -NHCHO groups) of H₂BDC-NH₂ by DMF, as persistent impurity, takes place during the synthesis of the UiO-66-NH₂. Thus, to enhance material performance, first, the as-synthesized UiO-66-NH₂ was deformylated to give pure UiO-66-NH₂. Subsequently, the pure UiO-66-NH₂ was converted to UiO-66-N₃ with a nearly complete conversion (∼95%). Finally, the azide-alkyne[3+2]-cycloaddition reaction of 2-ethynylpyridine with the UiO-66-N₃ gave the UiO-66-Pyta. The porous MOF was then applied for the solid-phase extraction of palladium ions from an aqueous medium. Affecting parameters on extraction efficiency of Pd(II) ions were also investigated and optimized. Interestingly, UiO-66-Pyta exhibited selective and superior adsorption capacity for Pd(II) with a maximum sorption capacity of 294.1 mg g^-1 at acidic pH (4.5). The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 1.9 μg L^-1. The estimated intra- and interday precisions are 3.6 and 1.7%, respectively. Moreover, the adsorbent was regenerated and reused for five cycles without any significant change in the capacity and repeatability. The adsorption mechanism was described based on various techniques such as FT-IR, PXRD, SEM/EDS, ICP-AES, and XPS analyses as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Notably, as a case study, the obtained UiO-66-Pyta after palladium adsorption, UiO-66-Pyta-Pd, was used as an efficient catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction.

Poly(lauryl methacrylate)-Grafted Amino-Functionalized Zirconium-Terephthalate Metal-Organic Framework: Efficient Adsorbent for Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Water Samples

In this study, a novel porous hybrid material, poly(lauryl methacrylate) polymer-grafted UiO-66-NH₂ (UiO = University of Oslo), was synthesized for efficient extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous samples. The polymer end-tethered covalently to the MOF's surface was synthesized by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, revealing a distinct type of morphology. The adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The analyses were carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Parameters including the type and volume of the eluent, the amount of the adsorbent, and adsorption and desorption times were investigated and optimized. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection, intraday precision, and interday precision were in the range of 3-8 ng L^-1, 1.4-3.1, and 4.1-6.5%, respectively. The procedure was used for analysis of PAHs from natural water samples.

The efficiency of Au/TiO₂ based catalysts in 1-phenylethanol oxidation was investigated. The role of support modifiers (La₂O₃ or CeO₂), influence of gold loading (0.5% or 4%) and redox pretreatment atmosphere, catalyst recyclability, effect of oxidant: tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) or O₂, as well as the optimization of experimental parameters of the reaction conditions in the oxidation of this alcohol were studied and compared with previous studies on 1-octanol oxidation. Samples were characterized by temperature-programmed oxygen desorption (O₂-TPD) method. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were carried out for used catalysts to find out the reason for deactivation in 1-phenylethanol oxidation. The best catalytic characteristics were shown by catalysts modified with La₂O₃, regardless of the alcohol and the type of oxidant. When O₂ was used, the catalysts with 0.5% Au, after oxidative pretreatment, showed the highest activity in both reactions. The most active catalysts in 1-phenylethanol oxidation with TBHP were those with 4% Au and the H₂ treatment, while under the same reaction conditions, 0.5% Au and O₂ treatment were beneficial in 1-octanol oxidation. Despite the different chemical nature of the substrates, it seems likely that Au⁺(Au^δ+) act as the active sites in both oxidative reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations confirmed that the gold cationic sites play an essential role in 1-phenylethanol adsorption.

MxOy-ZrO2 (M = Zn, Co, Cu) Solid Solutions Derived from Schiff Base-Bridged UiO-66 Composites as High-Performance Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation

Metal-organic frameworks have been exploited as excellent solid precursors and templates for the preparation integrated nanocatalysts with multicomponent and hierarchical structures. Herein, a novel synthetic protocol has been developed to fabricate versatile Zr-based solid solutions (such as ZnO-ZrO₂, Co₃O₄-ZrO₂, and CuO-ZrO₂) via pyrolysis of Schiff base-modified UiO-66 octahedrons (size <100 nm), which were then utilized as efficient catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation. The Schiff base serves as an effective bridge to dope secondary metal ions into UiO-66 frameworks with controlled amounts of 0.13-8.8 wt %, which are initially hard to achieve. Interestingly, by simply changing the loading metal ions, the selectivity of C₁ hydrogenation products can be facilely tuned. For instance, the maximum CO₂ conversion of ZnO-ZrO₂, Co₃O₄-ZrO₂, and CuO-ZrO₂ solid solutions were 5.8, 11.4, and 22.5%, with the main product selectivity of 70% CH₃OH, 92.5% CH₄, and 86.7% CO, respectively. Moreover, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra characterization reveals that the significant difference in C₁ product selectivity is mainly determined by the balance of *HCOO, *CH₃O, and *CO intermediate species over the Zr-based solid solutions.

Effects of Alkali Metal (Li, Na, and K) Incorporation in NH₂⁻MIL125(Ti) on the Performance of CO₂ Adsorption

A series of titanium-based, metal–organic framework (MOF) materials, xM@NH₂-MIL125(Ti) (x is the alkali metal loading percentage during the synthesis; M = Li, Na, K), have been synthesized solvothermally. Alkali metal doping in the NH₂–MIL125(Ti) in situ solvothermal process demonstrated a vital modification of the material structure and surface morphology for the CO₂ adsorption capacity at ambient conditions. By changing the reactants’ precursor, including different kinds of alkali metal, the morphology of xM@NH₂–MIL125(Ti) can be adjusted from a tetragonal plate through a circular plate to a truncated octahedron. The variation of the alkali metal loading results in substantial differences in the CO₂ adsorption. The properties of xM@NH₂–MIL125(Ti) were evaluated via functional group coordination using FT-IR, phase identification based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface morphology through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as N₂ and CO₂ adsorption by physical gas adsorption analysis. This work reveals a new pathway to the modification of MOF materials for high-efficiency CO₂ adsorption.
