A new nFe@ZIF-8 for the removal of Pb(II) from wastewater by selective adsorption and reduction

Controllable integration of nano zero-valent iron into MOFs with different structures for the purification of hexavalent chromium-contaminated water: Combined insights of scavenging performance and potential mechanism investigations

This work combined the stability of the porous structure of metal-organic frameworks with the strong reducibility of nano zero-valent iron, for the controllable integration of NZVI into MOFs to utilize the advantages of each component with enhancing the rapid decontamination and scavenging of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Hence, four kinds of MOFs/NZVI composites namely ZIF67/NZVI, MOF74/NZVI, MIL101(Fe)/NZVI, CuBTC/NZVI, were prepared for Cr(VI) capture. The results indicated that the stable structure of ZIF67, MOF74, MIL101(Fe), CuBTC, was beneficial for the dispersion of NZVI that could help more close contact between MOFs/NZVI reactive sites and Cr(VI), subsequently, MOFs/NZVI was proved to be better scavengers for Cr(VI) scavenging than NZVI alone. The Cr(VI) capture achieved the maximum adsorption capacity at pH ~ 4.0, which might be due to the participation of more H+ in the reaction and better corrosion of NZVI at lower pH. Mechanism investigation demonstrated synergy of adsorption, reduction and surface precipitation resulted in enhanced Cr(VI) scavenging, and Fe(0), dissolved and surface-bound Fe(II) were the primary reducing species. The findings of this investigation indicated that the as-prepared composites of ZIF67/NZVI, MOF74/NZVI, MIL101(Fe)/NZVI, CuBTC/NZVI, with high oxidation resistance and excellent reactivity, could provide reference for the decontamination and purification of actual Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Fe3O4-Incorporated Metal-Organic Framework for Chemo/Ferroptosis Synergistic Anti-Tumor via the Enhanced Chemodynamic Therapy

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based drug delivery nanomaterials for cancer therapy have attracted increasing attention in recent years. Here, an enhanced chemodynamic anti-tumor therapy strategy by promoting the Fenton reaction by using core-shell zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)@Fe3O4 as a therapeutic platform is proposed. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is used as a stabilizer of Fe3O4, which is then decorated on the surface of ZIF-8 via the electrostatic interaction and serves as an efficient Fenton reaction trigger. Meanwhile, the pH-responsive ZIF-8 scaffold acts as a container to encapsulate the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX). The obtained DOX-ZIF-8@Fe3O4/CMC (DZFC) nanoparticles concomitantly accelerate DOX release and generate more hydroxyl radicals by targeting the lysosomes in cancer cells. In vitro and in vivo studies verify that the DZFC nanoparticles trigger glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4)-dependent ferroptosis via the activation of the c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) signaling pathway, following to achieve the chemo/ferroptosis synergistic anti-tumor efficacy. No marked toxic effects are detected during DZFC treatment in a tumor-bearing mouse model. This composite nanoparticle remarkably suppresses the tumor growth with minimized systemic toxicity, opening new horizons for the next generation of theragnostic nanomedicines.

Tribological Performance and Enhancing Mechanism of 3D Printed PEEK Coated with In Situ ZIF-8 Nanomaterial

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is esteemed as a high-performance engineering polymer renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties and thermal stability. Nonetheless, the majority of polymer-based lubricating materials fail to meet the contemporary industrial demands for motion components regarding high speed, heavy loading, temperature resistance, and precise control. Utilizing 3D printing technology to design and fabricate intricately structured components, developing high-performance polymer self-lubricating materials becomes imperative to fulfill the stringent operational requirements of motion mechanisms. This study introduces a novel approach employing 3D printing technology to produce PEEK with varying filling densities and conducting in situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanomaterials on its surface to enhance PEEK's frictional performance. The research discusses the synthetic methodology, characterization techniques, and tribological performance evaluation of in situ synthesized ZIF-8 nanomaterials on PEEK surfaces. The findings demonstrate a significant enhancement in frictional performance of the composite material under low-load conditions, achieving a minimum wear rate of 4.68 × 10-6 mm3/N·m compared to the non-grafted PEEK material's wear rate of 1.091 × 10-5 mm3/N·m, an approximately 1.3 times improvement. Detailed characterization and analysis of the worn surface of the steel ring unveil the lubrication mechanism of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles, thereby presenting new prospects for the diversified applications of PEEK.

Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of CaCu3Ti4O12/reduced graphene oxide composites for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical products: Ibuprofen and Ciprofloxacin

The objective of this research is to create a highly effective approach for eliminating pollutants from the environment through the process of photocatalytic degradation. The study centers around the production of composites consisting of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using an ultrasonic-assisted method, with a focus on their capacity to degrade ibuprofen (IBF) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) via photodegradation. The impact of rGO on the structure, morphology, and optical properties of CCTO was inspected using XRD, FTIR, Raman, FESEM, XPS, BET, and UV-Vis. Morphology characterization showed that rGO particles were dispersed within the CCTO matrix without any specific chemical interaction between CCTO and C in the rGO. The BET analysis revealed that with increasing the amount of rGO in the composite, the specific surface area significantly increased compared to the CCTO standalone. Besides, increasing rGO resulted in a reduction in the optical bandgap energy to around 2.09 eV, makes it highly promising photocatalyst for environmental applications. The photodegradation of IBF and CIP was monitored using visible light irradiation. The results revealed that both components were degraded above 97% after 60 min. The photocatalyst showed an excellent reusability performance with a slight decrease after five runs to 93% photodegradation efficiency.

Removal of Pb (II) and Zn (II) in the mineral beneficiation wastewater by using cross-linked carboxymethyl starch-g-methacrylic acid as an effective flocculant

The cross-linked carboxymethyl starch-g-methacrylic acid (CCMS-g-MAA) was prepared by using grafting and micro-cross-linking in the one-pot preparation process. CCMS-g-MAA presented high removal capacity of Pb (II) of 57.13 mg/g at pH = 4 and high removal capacity of Zn (II) of 51.41 mg/g at pH = 5 by using a sample dosage of 0.68 g/L. Characterization results of FTIR, TG, and XRD illustrate that methacrylic acid and sodium tri-metaphosphate were successfully introduced into the structure of carboxymethyl starch. SEM characterization presented that the sample particles were amorphous aggregates with surface voids, which was favorable for the adsorption of heavy metal ions from wastewater. Adsorption isotherm results indicated that Freundlich equation could be better used to describe the adsorption process of metal ions on CCMS-g-MAA. The adsorption kinetic results indicated that the pseudo-second-order model is more suitable to describe this removal process. XPS results indicated that metal ions interacted with functional groups on the surface of flocculant, especially carboxyl groups. The removal process may be purposed that metal ions were adsorbed by porous material, and then combined with surface functional groups of the flocculant via electrostatic interaction, chelation or ion exchange. Subsequently, metal ions were separated from the wastewater with flocs precipitated in the bottom of solution via bridging and patching. The obtained results illustrated that CCMS-g-MAA was an effective material for the treatment of wastewater containing polymetallic ions besides mineral beneficiation wastewater supported by its excellent regeneration.

Effects of ZIF-L Morphology on PI@PDA@PEI/ZIF-L Composite Membrane's Adsorption and Separation Properties for Heavy Metal Ions

Composite polymolecular separation membranes were prepared by combining multi-branched ZIF-L with high-porosity electrospinning nanofibers PI. Meanwhile, PDA and PEI were introduced into the membrane in order to improve its adhesion. The new membrane is called the "PI@PDA@PEI/ZIF-L-4" composite membrane. Compared with the PI@PDA@PEI/ZIF-8 composite membrane, the new membrane's filtration rates for heavy metal ions such as Cd2+, Cr3+, and Pb2+ were increased by 7.0%, 6.6%, and 9.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the new membrane has a permeability of up to 1140.0 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, and displayed a very stable performance after four repeated uses. The separation mechanism of the PI@PDA@PEI/ZIF-L composite membrane was analyzed further in order to provide a basis to support the production of separation membranes with a high barrier rate and high flux.

Design of amphoteric MOFs-cellulose based composite for wastewater remediation: Adsorption and catalysis

Water pollution remains a serious problem for aquatic organism and human beings. Developing an efficient material which can simultaneously remove and convert pollutants into low or no harmful compounds is an essential issue. Targeting at this goal, a multifunctional and amphoteric wastewater treatment material of Co-MOF and functionalized cellulose-based composite (CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67) was designed and prepared. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium alginate (SA) were selected as support to construct an interpenetrating network structure and made it crosslinked with polyethyleneimine (PEI) for further in situ growth of ZIF-67 with good dispersion. The material was characterized using an appropriate set of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. When applied in the adsorption of heavy metal oxyanions with no adjustment of pH, the adsorbent could completely decontaminate Cr(VI) at both low and high initial concentrations with good reduction rates. The adsorbent maintained good reusability after five cycles. Meanwhile, the cobalt species of CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67 can activate peroxymonosulfate to generate high oxidizing substances (such as SO4-· and ·OH- radicals) to degrade cationic rhodamine B dye within 120 min, thus indicating the amphoteric and catalytic nature of our CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67 adsorbent. The mechanism of the adsorption and catalytic process was also discussed based with the assistance of different characterization analysis.

Aqueous Pb(II) Removal Using ZIF-60: Adsorption Studies, Response Surface Methodology and Machine Learning Predictions

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are increasingly gaining attention in many application fields due to their outstanding porosity and thermal stability, among other exceptional characteristics. However, in the domain of water purification via adsorption, scientists have mainly focused on ZIF-8 and, to a lesser extent, ZIF-67. The performance of other ZIFs as water decontaminants is yet to be explored. Hence, this study applied ZIF-60 for the removal of lead from aqueous solutions; this is the first time ZIF-60 has been used in any water treatment adsorption study. The synthesized ZIF-60 was subjected to characterization using FTIR, XRD and TGA. A multivariate approach was used to investigate the effect of adsorption parameters on lead removal and the findings revealed that ZIF-60 dose and lead concentration are the most significant factors affecting the response (i.e., lead removal efficiency). Further, response surface methodology-based regression models were generated. To further explore the adsorption performance of ZIF-60 in removing lead from contaminated water samples, adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamic investigations were conducted. The findings revealed that the obtained data were well-fitted by the Avrami and pseudo-first-order kinetic models, suggesting that the process is complex. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) was predicted to be 1905 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies revealed an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process. Finally, the experimental data were aggregated and used for machine learning predictions using several algorithms. The model generated by the random forest algorithm proved to be the most effective on the basis of its significant correlation coefficient and minimal root mean square error (RMSE).

Water stable MOFs as emerging class of porous materials for potential environmental applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are extensively recognized for their wide applications in a variety of fields such as water purification, adsorption, sensing, catalysis and drug delivery. The fundamental characteristics of the majority of MOFs, such as their structure and shape, are known to be sensitively impacted by water or moisture. As a result, a thorough evaluation of the stability of MOFs in respect to factors linked to these property changes is required. It is quite rare for MOFs in their early stages to have strong water-stability, which is necessary for the commercialization and development of wider applications of this interesting material. Also, numerous applications in presence of water have progressed considerably as a "proof of concept" stage in the past and a growing number of water-stable MOFs (WSMOFs) have been discovered in recent years. This review discusses the variables and processes that affect the aqueous stability of several MOFs, including imidazolate and carboxylate frameworks. Accordingly, this article will assist researchers in accurately evaluating how water affects the stability of MOFs so that effective techniques can be identified for the advancement of water-stable metal-organic frameworks (WSMOFs) and for their effective applications toward a variety of fields.

Metal-organic frameworks for food contaminant adsorption and detection

Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have been widely used in food contamination adsorption and detection due to their large specific surface area, specific pore structure and flexible post-modification. MOFs with specific pore size can be targeted for selective adsorption of some contaminants and can be used as pretreatment and pre-concentration steps to purify samples and enrich target analytes for food contamination detection to improve the detection efficiency. In addition, MOFs, as a new functional material, play an important role in developing new rapid detection methods that are simple, portable, inexpensive and with high sensitivity and accuracy. The aim of this paper is to summarize the latest and insightful research results on MOFs for the adsorption and detection of food contaminants. By summarizing Zn-based, Cu-based and Zr-based MOFs with low cost, easily available raw materials and convenient synthesis conditions, we describe their principles and discuss their applications in chemical and biological contaminant adsorption and sensing detection in terms of stability, adsorption capacity and sensitivity. Finally, we present the limitations and challenges of MOFs in food detection, hoping to provide some ideas for future development.

Adsorption and fenton-like oxidation of ofloxacin in wastewater using hybrid MOF bimetallic Fe/Ni nanoparticles

Since ofloxacin (OFX) is one of many common antibiotics, which effluxes into aquatic environment in relatively high concentration, it has become of significant environmental concern due to the potential for increased antibiotic resistance. In this study, an innovative functional Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 composite was successfully used for the Fenton-like oxidation of OFX, with a OFX removal efficiency >98% under optimal conditions. FTIR analysis confirmed that OFX removal occurred via adsorption to Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 by a combination of π-π bond intercalation and electrostatic interaction, while XPS revealed that the Fe/Ni NPs in Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 were also involved in oxidation. Furthermore, LC-MS analysis identified the presence of several OFX degradation products post exposure, which indicted that Fe/Ni NPs in Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 reacted with H₂O₂ to form •OH, leading to Fenton-like oxidation of OFX. Thus overall, OFX removal by Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 involved both adsorption to ZIF-8 and Fenton-like oxidation by Fe/Ni NPs. A synergistic mechanism for OFX removal by Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 was thus proposed. The removal efficiency of the synthesized catalysts remained high (above 65%) even after a 5th reuse cycle, which reflected the high stability of Fe/Ni@ZIF-8. Overall, this study demonstrated that Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 had significant potential for the removal of OFX from wastewaters with a removal efficiency >90%.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron immobilized by ZIF-8 metal-organic frameworks for enhanced removal of hexavalent chromium

nZVI is considered to be a promising material for environmental remediation. However, the drawbacks of easy agglomeration and low activity severely limit its application. In this work, nZVI/ZIF-8 was obtained by in-situ reduction of nZVI in the presence of performed ZIF-8. The reactivity of the as-obtained nZVI/ZIF-8 nanocomposites was investigated by removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. The as-obtained nZVI/ZIF-8 nanocomposites showed a superior activity for Cr(VI) removal, with an optimum activity (91.27%) achieved over 0.25 nZVI/ZIF-8 (i e., the mass ratio of ZIF-8 to nZVI was 0.25), higher than that of nZVI (64.55%), and this could be owned to the excellent dispersion of nZVI in nZVI/ZIF-8 and the high specific surface area as compared with the bare nZVI. The results of XPS characterization, quenching experiment analysis and kinetics fitting indicated that the Cr(VI) elimination was a surface-dominated chemical reduction process. Besides, more than 99.00% Cd(II), Cu(II), Cr(VI) and Pb(II) was removed from wastewater over nZVI/ZIF-8 nanocomposites, and negligible zinc ion was detected in the aqueous solutions. The results of our finding demonstrate that the introduction of MOFs is an effective strategy in developing a highly efficient nZVI-based nanocomposites system, and also highlight the promising role of using nZVI/MOFs in heavy metal treatment for practical wastewater.

A comparative study on adsorption and catalytic degradation of tetracycline by five magnetic mineral functional materials prepared from steel pickling waste liquor

Palygorskite (Pal), bentonite (Bent), sepiolite (Sep), zeolite (Zeol), and kaolin (Kaol) were used with steel pickling waste liquor to synthesize magnetic palygorskite (Pal@Fe₃O₄), magnetic bentonite (Bent@Fe₃O₄), magnetic sepiolite (Sep@Fe₃O₄), magnetic zeolite (Zeol@Fe₃O₄), and magnetic kaolin (Kaol@Fe₃O₄), for adsorption and catalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), respectively. Through the study of adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pal@Fe₃O₄ to TC was 149.439 mg/g, which was 1.239 times, 2.260 times, 3.161 times, and 3.448 times of Bent@Fe₃O₄, Zeol@Fe₃O₄, Kaol@Fe₃O₄, and Sep@Fe₃O₄, respectively. The kinetic study of tetracycline degradation demonstrated that the maximum reaction rate constant of Bent@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂ system was K_(obs) = 2.12 × 10^-2 min^-1, which was close to that of Pal@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, Kaol@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂ system, and was 2.000 times, 2.356 times, 2.650 times, and 4.711 times of Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, Zeol@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, Sep@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, and H₂O₂ system, respectively. The results showed that Pal@Fe₃O₄ and Bent@Fe₃O₄ were more advantageous in the treatment of wastewater containing tetracycline, and efficient reuse of exhausted magnetic minerals and deep mineralization of organic pollutants were achieved by constructing an advanced oxidation system. The BET, VSM, SEM, XPS, XRD, and FTIR were used to characterize the five clay minerals before and after magnetic modification. It was speculated that the surface structure - OH groups of clay minerals might be significant factors influencing the adsorption performance of magnetic minerals on TC, and reduction ability of clay minerals to Fe³⁺ importantly affected the catalytic performance of magnetic minerals. The specific surface area and morphological structure of clay minerals both affected the adsorption and catalytic degradation of TC by the five magnetic minerals.

Efficient electro-catalyzed PMS activation on a Fe-ZIF-8 based BTNAs/Ti anode: An in-depth investigation on anodic catalytic behavior

Phenanthrene (PHE), mainly released from coal tar and petroleum distillation, is an important kind of prevalent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination in China (up to 2.38 ± 0.02 mg/kg in soil and 8668 ng/L in surface water) and other countries in the world. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show promising application prospects in the decontamination field, however, suffering from the intrinsic fragility and fine powder forms. Therefore, macroscopic MOFs architecture-sandwich-like Fe-ZIF-8/blue TiO₂ nanotube arrays (BTNAs)/Ti substrate (FBTT) anode with strong interfacial bonding (Fe-O-Ti and Fe-2-MIM-Ti coordination) was constructed using innovative in situ growth, condensation-crystallization-deposition, and pyrolysis methods, aiming at exploring the feasibility of MOFs-based anode/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) mediated PHE elimination, revealing the in-depth mechanisms, simultaneously overcoming the intrinsic drawbacks of MOFs. The FBTT-4 (doping content of 30 %) efficiently degraded PHE by 90.01 % and 74.5 % within 10 min at 350 μg/L and 3 mg/L, respectively, mediated by the ^·OH compared to the SO₄^·-, ¹O₂, and O₂^·-. Post-optimized range of anodic potential enabled (i) anodic oxidation, (ii) activation of water and PMS molecules to produce active species, (iii) capture of electrons in reactants to reduce Fe³⁺/Ti⁴⁺ to Fe²⁺/Ti³⁺, maintaining the proportion of Fe/Ti with low valence and thus stable PMS activation capacity, and (iv) regulation of the Fe/Ti d-band center to modulate the anode adsorption capacity. The further increment in anodic potential could promote "dark photocatalysis" with a Z-scheme-like mechanism. Thus, it is proposed that the development of macroscopic MOFs-based anode, especially those with small band gaps, represents vast potentials in electrocatalytic contamination elimination. Simultaneously, the MOFs-based anode is expected to fully exploit their catalytic capacities and solve their intrinsic defects as well.

Simultaneous removal of arsenite and arsenate from mining wastewater using ZIF-8 embedded with iron nanoparticles

Arsenic contamination is an increasing global environmental problem, especially in mining industry wastewater where both arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) have been routinely detected. In this paper, a novel porous metal-organic framework material (ZIF-8) was composited with iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) to form a functional material (ZIF-8@FeNPs) for the simultaneous removal of As(III)/(V) from wastewater. The material effectively removed both As(III) and As(V) with removal efficiencies of 99.9 and 71.2%, respectively. Advanced characterization techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier infrared (FTIR) indicated that removal of As(III) and As(V) involved complex formation. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order kinetics indicating adsorption involved chemisorption. After four cycles of reuse the he removal rate of As species was still relatively high at > 60% When ZIF-8@FeNPs were used to remove As from real wastewater from acid mines the removal efficiency was 94.27%. Finally, a As(III) and As(V) removal mechanism was proposed.

Synthesis, performance, and mechanisms of strontium ferrite-incorporated zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-8) for the simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and tetracycline

In this study, strontium ferrite (SF)-incorporated zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-8) (SFZIF-8) that can simultaneously uptake Pb(II) and tetracycline (TC) in solution was synthesized and characterized. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared SFZIF-8 were characterized by various functional groups, higher average pore diameter (3.414 nm), and stronger negative charge (-30.5 mV). Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, effect of various water conditions including solution pH and temperature, and reusability were studied to evaluate its adsorption performance. The adsorption capacity of SFZIF-8 was compared with that of commonly used adsorbents (powder and granular activated carbon). SFZIF-8 showed much higher adsorption performance (429.6 mg/g and 433.4 mg/g for Pb(II) and TC, respectively) than powder activated carbon (129.9 mg/g and 142.0 mg/g for Pb(II) and TC, respectively) and granular activated carbon (249.3 mg/g and 263.0 mg/g for Pb(II) and TC, respectively) in Pb(II) and TC binary solutions. The SFZIF-8 adsorption behaviors for the removal of Pb(II) and TC were explained by the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models from the adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments, respectively. The regenerated SFZIF-8 exhibited a competitive performance even after the third cycle. These results indicate that Pb(II) and TC can be removed with SFZIF-8 via electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. Therefore, by exhibiting effective and efficient adsorption performance, SFZIF-8 nanocomposites can be utilized as alternative and promising adsorbents for the simultaneous removal of both Pb(II) and TC.

A post-functional Ti-based MOFs composite for selective removal of Pb (II) from water

Lead ions in water have notorious effects on humans and environment. It is important to design an adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and reproducibility for efficiently removing Pb (II)ions from polluted water. Here, a novel Ti-based MOFs material (BDB-MIL-125(Ti)@Fe₃O₄) was prepared by modifying NH₂-MIL-125(Ti) with sulfhydryl and amino groups. Due to the large number of active sites, the maximum Pb (II) adsorption capacity of BDB-MIL-125(Ti)@Fe₃O₄ was 710.79 mg/g at 25 °C and pH = 6 within 120 min corresponding to a maximum removal rate of 95.68%. The adsorbent also has extremely high selectivity and good cycling adsorption performance. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics agree with the Langmuir and the pseudo-second-order models, indicating that the process was chemisorption. Thermodynamic studies prove that spontaneous processes enhance Pb (II) adsorption at higher temperatures. DFT and FMOs calculations were used to discuss the adsorption mechanism. The sulfhydryl groups on the surface of organic ligands have a stronger affinity for Pb (II).

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 as a dispersive solid phase extraction sorbent for simultaneous determination of 145 pesticide residues in polyphenol-rich plants

Many plants showed higher polyphenol content, which caused the matrix effect and made the analysis of trace pesticide residues highly challenging. A common approach to improving matrix effects is to purify pesticides through the use of sorbents, but this requires a combination of multiple sorbents and extensive use. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 is widely used for pesticide analysis due to its high porosity, large specific surface area and versatility. Here, We established and validated a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method based on a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 that was used to test the removal ability for polyphenols. And 145 pesticide residues in peppermint, perilla, fennel, and mulberry leaves were analyzed by the modified method coupled with LC-MS/MS. The mean recoveries of all pesticide residues were in the range of 74.3%-103.7%, with mean relative standard deviations≤ 9.1% at spiked concentrations of 1, 10, 50, and 100 μg kg^-1 for mulberry leaves. The limits of quantitation of the method ranged from 1 to 50 μg kg^-1 . This study offers a reliable approach for the accurate quantitative analysis of various trace substances in the polyphenol-rich plants. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Applications of water-stable metal-organic frameworks in the removal of water pollutants: A review

Because the pollutants produced by human activities have destroyed the ecological balance of natural water environment, and caused severe impact on human life safety and environmental security. Hence the task of water environment restoration is imminent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), structured from organic ligands and inorganic metal ions, are notable for their outstanding crystallinity, diverse structures, large surface areas, adsorption performance, and excellent component tunability. The water stability of MOFs is a key requisite for their possible actual applications in separation, catalysis, adsorption, and other water environment remediation areas because it is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the material structure during utilization. In this article, we comprehensively review state-of-the-art research progress on the promising potential of MOFs as excellent nanomaterials to remove contaminants from the water environment. Firstly, the fundamental characteristics and preparation methods of several typical water-stable MOFs include UiO, MIL, and ZIF are introduced. Then, the removal property and mechanism of heavy metal ions, radionuclide contaminants, drugs, and organic dyes by different MOFs were compared. Finally, the application prospect of MOFs in pollutant remediation prospected. In this review, the synthesis methods and application in water pollutant removal are explored, which provide ways toward the effective use of water-stable MOFs in materials design and environmental remediation.

High-performance Fe-doped ZIF-8 adsorbent for capturing tetracycline from aqueous solution

Efficient removal of antibiotics from aqueous solution is of fundamental importance due to the increasingly severe antibiotic-related pollution. Herein, a high-performance Fe-ZIF-8-500 adsorbent was synthesized by Fe-doping strategy and subsequent activation with high-temperature. In order to evaluate the feasibility of Fe-ZIF-8-500 as an adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) removal, the adsorption properties of Fe-ZIF-8-500 were systematically explored. The results showed that the Fe-ZIF-8-500 exhibited ultrahigh adsorption capacity for TC with a record-high value of 867 mg g^-1. Additionally, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms for TC onto the Fe-ZIF-8-500 can be well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Freundlich model, respectively. The ultrahigh adsorption capacity of Fe-ZIF-8-500 can be explained by the synergistic effect of multi-affinities, i.e., surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding. After being used for four cycles the adsorption capacity of Fe-ZIF-8-500 remains a high level, demonstrating its outstanding reusability. The ultrahigh adsorption capacity, excellent reusability, satisfactory water stability and easy-preparation nature of Fe-ZIF-8-500 highlight its bright prospect for removing tetracycline pollutant from wastewater.

Removal of toxic arsenic (As(Ⅲ)) from industrial wastewater by ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with CuSO4

Arsenic was one of toxic element in industrial wastewater. Removal of arsenic has always been a hot research topic in academia. Herein, arsenic (As(Ⅲ)) in industrial wastewater was removed by ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with copper sulfate (CuSO₄). Secondary pollution would not be caused by the addition of zero-valent lead and copper sulfate. Parameters, such as Pb/As molar ratio, the amount of CuSO₄ added, reaction temperature, ultrasonic power and reaction time were investigated in this study. It was concluded that the removal of arsenic could be described by an unreacted shrinking nuclear model with activation energy 1.857 kJ/mol. The process of ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with CuSO₄ to remove arsenic was a diffusion controlled process. The precipitation after arsenic removal was characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, XRF, and XPS to analyze the precipitated phases, topography, element content and different valence state of element. Based on the above analysis, the thermodynamic data and changes in ion concentration, the mechanism of efficient removal of arsenic (As(Ⅲ)) from industrial wastewater by ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with CuSO₄ was revealed.
