Enhanced magnetic heating efficiency at acidic pH for magnetic nanoemulsions stabilized with a weak polyelectrolyte

Study of biopolymer encapsulated Eu doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia application

An exciting prospect in the field of magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) has been the integration of noble rare earth elements (Eu) with biopolymers (chitosan/dextran) that have optimum structures to tune specific effects on magnetic nanoparticles (NPs). However, the heating efficiency of MNPs is primarily influenced by their magnetization, size distribution, magnetic anisotropy, dipolar interaction, amplitude, and frequency of the applied field, the MNPs with high heating efficiency are still challenging. In this study, a comprehensive experimental analysis has been conducted on single-domain magnetic nanoparticles (SDMNPs) for evaluating effective anisotropy, assessing the impact of particle-intrinsic factors and experimental conditions on self-heating efficiency in both noninteracting and interacting systems, with a particular focus on the dipolar interaction effect. The study successfully reconciles conflicting findings on the interaction effects in the agglomeration and less agglomerated arrangements for MFH applications. The results suggest that effective control of dipolar interactions can be achieved by encapsulating Chitosan/Dextran in the synthesized MNPs. The lower dipolar interactions successfully tune the self-heating efficiency and hold promise as potential candidates for MFH applications.

A nudge over the relaxation plateau: effect of pH, particle concentration, and medium viscosity on the AC induction heating efficiency of biocompatible chitosan-coated Fe3O4nanoparticles

The effects of pH, MNP concentration, and medium viscosity on the magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) properties of chitosan-coated superparamagnetic Fe3O4nanoparticles (MNPs) are probed here. Due to the protonation of the amide groups, the MNPs are colloidally stable at lower pH (∼2), but form aggregates at higher pH (∼8). The increased aggregate size at higher pH causes the Brownian relaxation time (τB) to increase, leading to a decrease in specific absorption rate (SAR). For colloidal conditions ensuring Brownian-dominated relaxation dynamics, an increase in MNP concentrations or medium viscosity is found to increase theτB. SAR decreases with increasing MNP concentration, whereas it exhibits a non-monotonic variation with increasing medium viscosity. Dynamic hysteresis loop-based calculations are found to be in agreement with the experimental results. The findings provide a greater understanding of the variation of SAR with the colloidal properties and show the importance of relaxation dynamics on MFH efficiency, where variations in the frequency-relaxation time product across the relaxation plateau cause significant variations in SAR. Further, thein vitrocytotoxicity studies show good bio-compatibility of the chitosan-coated Fe3O4MNPs. Higher SAR at acidic pH for bio-medically acceptable field parameters makes the bio-compatible chitosan-coated Fe3O4MNPs suitable for MFH applications.

A comprehensive scrutiny to controlled dipolar interactions to intensify the self-heating efficiency of biopolymer encapsulated Tb doped magnetite nanoparticles

An exciting prospect in the field of magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) has been the integration of noble rare earth elements with biopolymers (chitosan/dextran) that have optimum structures to tune specific effects on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). Remarkably, it has been demonstrated that dipole-dipole interactions have a significant influence on nanoparticle dynamics. In this article, we present an exhaustive scrutiny of dipolar interactions and how this affects the efficiency of MFH applications. In particular, we prepare chitosan and dextran-coated Tb-doped MNPs and study whether it is possible to increase the heat released by controlling the dipole-dipole interactions. It has been indicated that even moderate control of agglomeration may substantially impact the structure and magnetization dynamics of the system. Besides estimating the specific loss power value, our findings provide a deep insight into the relaxation mechanisms and bring to light how to tune the self-heating efficacy towards magnetic hyperthermia.

Dispersion Homogeneity of Silicon Anode Slurries with Various Binders for Li-Ion Battery Anode Coating

We aimed to determine the relationship between surface chemistry and the rheological properties of silicon anode slurries in lithium-ion batteries. To accomplish this, we investigated the use of various binders such as PAA, CMC/SBR, and chitosan as a means to control particle aggregation and improve the flowability and homogeneity of the slurry. Additionally, we utilized zeta potential analysis to examine the electrostatic stability of the silicon particles in the presence of different binders, and the results indicated that the conformations of the binders on the silicon particles can be influenced by both neutralization and the pH conditions. Furthermore, we found that the zeta potential values served as a useful metric for evaluating binder adsorption and particle dispersion in the solution. We also conducted three-interval thixotropic tests (3ITTs) to examine the structural deformation and recovery characteristics of the slurry, and the results demonstrated that these properties vary depending on the strain intervals, pH conditions, and chosen binder. Overall, this study emphasized the importance of taking into account surface chemistry, neutralization, and pH conditions when assessing the rheological properties of the slurry and coating quality for lithium-ion batteries.

Fine-tuned magnetic nanobubbles for magnetic hyperthermia treatment of glioma cells

Magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) induced magnetic hyperthermia has been demonstrated as a promising technique for the treatment of brain tumor. However, lower heating efficiency resulting from low intratumoral accumulation of magnetic nanomaterials is still one of the significant limitations for their thermotherapeutic efficacy. In this study, we have designed a nanobubble structure with MNPs decorated on the shell, which leads to the improvement of magnetocaloric performance under an alternating magnetic field. First, the phospholipid coupled with MNPs as the shell to be self-assembled magnetic nanobubbles (MNBs) was fabricated by a temperature-regulated repeated compression self-assembly approach. Then, the optimal magnetic heating concentration, electric current parameters for producing the magnetic field, and the number of magnetic heating times were investigated for tuning the better magnetoenergy conversion. Finally, the well-defined geometrical orientation of MNPs on the nanobubble structure enhanced hypothermia effect was investigated. The results demonstrate that the MNBs could promote the endocytosis of magnetic nanoparticles by glioma cells, resulting in better therapeutic effect. Therefore, the controlled assembly of MNPs into well-defined bubble structures could serve as a new hyperthermia agent for tumor therapy.

Inter-droplet force between magnetically polarizable Pickering oil-in-water nanoemulsions stabilized with γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles: Role of electrostatic and electric dipolar interactions

HYPOTHESIS

The presence of nanoparticles at oil-water interface influences the interaction forces between Pickering emulsions. When charged nanoparticles are at the oil-water interface of an electrostatically stabilized emulsion, in addition to the screened Coulombic interaction, electric dipolar force also influences the total inter-droplet force profiles. An in-depth understanding of the effects of such electric dipolar forces is essential for designing colloidally stable Pickering nanoemulsions for various applications.

EXPERIMENTS

Inter-droplet forces between γ-Al₂O₃ nanoparticle stabilized oil-in-water nanoemulsion, containing superparamagnetic nanoparticles (magnetically polarizable) in the oil phase, are measured using the magnetic-chaining technique at different pH and salt concentrations. The role of mono-, di- and tri-valent salts on the inter-droplet force profiles are assessed.

FINDINGS

Force measurement studies reveal a lowering of inter-droplet spacing, within the linear chains, for higher salt concentrations due to an increased screening. Strong interfacial attachment of the charged nanoparticles results in the formation of an asymmetric charge cloud leading to an electric dipolar interaction. Incorporating the contributions of electric dipolar and screened Coulombic interactions, the theoretically estimated total repulsive force magnitudes are in good agreement with the experimental data. The obtained results offer better insights into the nature of colloidal force between charged particle stabilized nanoemulsions.
