Abstract
Adsorption process plays an important role in the remediation of heavy metals (HMs) from wastewater. A laboratory trial was conducted to investigate effective parameters for improving the bio-adsorption removal of HMs. SEM, EDX, BET, and FTIR techniques were applied to characterize the calcined layer double hydroxide (Cal-LDH), pectin (PC), and Cal-LDH-PC composite prepared from Licorice pomace. The adsorption of zinc (Zn) cadmium, nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) onto the most efficient sorbent was investigated using RSM methodology with operational factors such as concentration, reaction time, sorbent dose, and pH. The results related to FTIR showed that Cal-LDH-PC had the highest number of functional groups. Based on the SEM results Cal-LDH had a low surface area (9.36 m2 g-1) and a small pore size (9.22 nm). After the modification process (Cal-LDH-PC), the values of surface area and pore size increased by 13-fold (120 m2 g-1) and 1.5-fold (18 nm), respectively. Cal-LDH had high adsorption performance, more cavities, stability, various functional groups, and excessive carbon and oxygen content, which make it efficient and powerful in removing HMs from wastewater. The optimal condition for achieving the removal efficiency (RE%) values of metals was determined to be 80.79 mg L-1, 100 min, 0.167 g L-1, and 9 for concentration, reaction time, sorbent dose, and pH, respectively. Maximum adsorption capacity and RE (%) were 300 mg g-1 and 99% for Zn. According to the results concentration had a major impact on RE% (except for Ni), while for Ni, adsorbent dose had the most significant impact. The present study introduced Cal-LDH-PC prepared from Licorice pomace as a capable, useful and economical sorbent for HMs removal from polluted environments. Taguchi's statistical method is distinguished as an economic method with easier interpretation, while the RSM approach is more accurate, and it can also check the interaction of parameters.

Abstract
Organically modified clays have been reported as a promising class of adsorbents for the treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of emerging contaminants of widespread concerns. Here, we reported the development and evaluation of ionic liquid (IL)-modified clays prepared with various natural clays to explore the role of clay substrate in the adsorption of eight persistent perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs). Based on detailed adsorption isotherm study, we found that the adsorption capacities of PFAAs were closely related to the cation exchange capacities of the raw clays and correspondingly the IL loadings of the modified clays. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between the adsorption affinity of PFAAs onto IL-modified clays and the octanol-water distribution coefficient (Dow) of PFAAs. Adsorption free energy analysis suggested that both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions played important roles in the adsorption of PFAAs onto IL-modified clays. Although electrostatic interactions were more predominant, the contribution of hydrophobic interactions increased with the increasing carbon number of perfluoroalkyl moiety of PFAAs, resulting in more favorable adsorption of long-chain PFAAs than their short-chain homologs. The performance of IL-modified clays was further demonstrated for the removal of PFAA mixtures under environmentally relevant conditions. Overall, results of this work can provide important insights into guiding the design of organically modified clay adsorbents for PFAS treatment.

Abstract
This research focused on the supramolecular self-assembly of organic fluorescent molecules on organically modified layered silicate minerals to design and prepare layered nanocomposites with excellent fluorescence properties. Aromatic hydrocarbons are hydrophobic and poorly loaded on the hydrophilic surface of layered silicate minerals, but they are easily captured by an organically modified mineral surface. Montmorillonite (MMT) and saponite (SAP), typical 2:1 type layered silicate minerals with different octahedral cations, were modified with the cationic surfactant octadecyl trimethylammonium chloride (OTAC) and loaded with pyrene (an aromatic hydrocarbon dye) with different molar ratios to the cationic surfactant by supramolecular self-assembling to construct fluorescent nanocomposites. The effect of pyrene concentration and the octahedral cation of the 2:1 type layered silicate minerals on photoluminescence properties was investigated. The fluorescence spectra of the nanocomposites prepared under low pyrene concentrations showed two bands at around 400 and 470 nm, corresponding to the monomer and excimer emissions; the band intensity of the excimer shoots up with the increase of pyrene concentration, reflecting different contributions from monomer and dimer species and the formation of radical aggregates. The excellent heat resistance of the layered silicate structure can effectively protect pyrene molecules from external environmental influences.

Abstract
Due to its success in treating cardio-cerebrovascular illnesses, salvianolic acid A (SAA) from Salvia miltiorrhiza is of major importance for effective acquisition. For the adsorption of salvianolic acid, cationic polyelectrolytes, and amino-terminated silane intercalated with phenylboronic-acid-functionalized montmorillonites, known as phenylboronic-acid-functionalized montmorillonites with PEI (PMP) and phenylboronic-acid-functionalized montmorillonites with KH550 (PMK), respectively, were produced. In this paper, detailed comparisons of the SAA adsorption performance and morphology of two adsorbents were performed. PMP showed a higher adsorption efficiency (>88%) over a wide pH range. PMK showed less pH-dependent SAA adsorption with a faster adsorption kinetic fitting in a pseudo-second-order model. For both PMP and PMK, the SAA adsorption processes were endothermic. Additionally, it was clearer how temperature affected PMP adsorption. PMK has a higher adsorption selectivity. This study demonstrates how the type of intercalator can be seen to have an impact on adsorption behavior through various structural variations and offers an alternative suggestion for establishing a dependable method for the synthesis of functional montmorillonite from the intercalator's perspective.

Abstract
Montmorillonite (Mt) is a potential adsorbent for volatile organic vapor removal from contaminated soils because of its rich reserves and porous nature, but its inertia surface property has limited its application for polar compounds. In this study, modifications of Mt were carried out by high energy ball milling with H2O2 and tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB) to obtain adsorbents with both high porosity and abundant Si-OH groups (BHTMt). The microporous structure produced by TMAB insertion as well as the silanol (Si-OH) groups formed by H2O2 oxidation improved the adsorption of acetone by the modified material. The adsorption capacity of BHTMt for acetone was increased by 80% compared to the original Mt. The effect of H2O2 dosage on the adsorption performance for gaseous acetone was investigated by dynamic adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetic results demonstrated that the adsorption of acetone by the modified material was subject to both physical and chemical adsorption. Density functional theory calculations indicated that there was no obvious interaction between TMAB and acetone, and the materials adsorbed acetone mainly through hydrogen bonding interaction of Si-OH as well as pore filling effects.

Abstract
Exploring the structure-dependent adsorption mechanism of contaminants in wastewater is beneficial to high-efficiency adsorbents design and environmental remediation. In this study, emerging porous material of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) has been modified by the magnetic graphene oxide-polydopamine nanohybrid (mGOP) to obtain three-dimensional ZIF-67/mGOP through an in-situ growth strategy, which was applied to adsorb 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy") in wastewater. A combination of characterizations, experiments (pH, humic acid and ion strength effect) and quantum chemical calculations revealed the microscopic adsorption mechanism involves each single component, of which the hydrogen bond (O/N…HO) and π-π electron donor acceptor (π-π EDA) interactions of mGOP endowed favourable adsorption of ZIF-67/mGOP, and mechanisms of the pore filling and Co-O chelation of ZIF-67 played synergistic effect. Such nanocomposite as a ZIFs-based adsorbent exhibited ultra-high porosity (total pore volume = 0.4033 cm3/g) and specific surface area (995.22 m2/g), revealed the heterogeneity and multilayer adsorption properties, and obtained a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 159.845 μg/g which higher than that of mZIF-67 alone. Overall, this work provided an effective strategy for rationally modulate ZIFs-based composites and exploration of adsorption mechanism.

Abstract
The discharge of emerging pollutants, such as beta-blockers (BB), has been recognized as one of the major threats to the environment due to the ecotoxicity associated with these emerging pollutants. The BB are prescribed to treat high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases; however, even at lower concentration, these pollutants can pose eco-toxic impacts towards aquatic organisms. Additionally, owing to their recalcitrant nature, BB are not effectively removed through conventional technologies, such as activated sludge process, trickling filter and moving bed bioreactor; thus, it is essential to understand the degradation mechanism of BB in established as well as embryonic technologies, like adsorption, electro-oxidation, Fenton process, ultraviolet-based advance oxidation process, ozonation, membrane systems, wetlands and algal treatment. In this regard, this review articulates the recalcitrant nature of BB and their associated removal technologies. Moreover, the major advantages and limitations of these BB removal technologies along with the recent advancements with regard to the application of innovative materials and strategies have also been elucidated. Therefore, the present review intends to aid the researchers in improving the BB removal efficiency of these technologies, thus alleviating the problem of the release of BB into the environment.

Abstract
Recent progress in nanotechnology via incorporation of small particle size as quantum dots (QDs) (1-10 nm) in many industrial activities and commercial products has led to significant undesired environmental impacts. Therefore, QDs removal from wastewater represents an interesting research topic with a lot of challenges for scientists and engineers nowadays. In this work, the coagulative removal of metal quantum dots as silver and gold from industrial water samples is explored. A novel biosorbent was assembled via binding of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with magnetic zeolite and Arabic gum hydrogel (COFs@MagZ@AGH) as a promising removal material for Ag-QDs and Au-QDs. This was fully characterized by EDX, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, XRD and surface area and applied in coagulative removal of Au-QDs and Ag-QDs in presence of several experimental factors as pH, presence of other electrolytes, stirring time, initial QDs concentration, coagulant dosage, and temperature in order to optimize the removal processes. At optimum conditions, COFs@MagZ@AGH was able to recover 99.19% and 87.57% of Ag-QDs and Au-QDs QDs, respectively via chemical adsorption mechanism with perfect fitting to pseudo-second order model. Reuse of the recovered Ag/Au-QDs@COFs@MagZ@AGH as efficient catalysts in catalytic degradation of Rifampicin antibiotic (Rf) from water was additionally investigated and optimized via microwave-Fenton catalysts with excellent oxidative degradation efficiency (100%). Reusability and applicability of the biosorbent (COFs@MagZ@AGH) and catalysts (Ag/Au-QDs@COFs@MagZ@AGH) in real industrial water samples were also explored and successfully accomplished.

Abstract
Montmorillonite is widely used for pollutants adsorption due to its porous structure and low price. However, the low specific surface area and small porosity limit its application in gas adsorption field. In this study, montmorillonite was organically modified using a facile dry ball milling method by tetramethylammonium bromide. The adsorption behaviour of toluene as a model VOC compound on organic montmorillonite was systematically investigated through adsorption breakthrough curves, adsorption kinetics and isotherms. After modification by ball milling, the specific surface area of ball milling with tetramethylammonium bromide for montmorillonite modification (BMTMt) was increased from 20.6 m2/g to 186.4 m2/g, and the microporosity proportion was up to 47%. Dynamic adsorption experiments showed that the best performance of BMTMt for toluene (55.9 mg/g) was 6 times higher than that of original montmorillonite (8.8 mg/g). Compared with the water bath preparation method, ball milling method promoted the intercalation of tetramethylammonium bromide into the layers of montmorillonite, resulting in a higher proportion of micropores. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the interaction between tetramethylammonium bromide and montmorillonite was mainly electrostatic forces, and the enhanced adsorption performance for toluene was mainly through microporous filling. BMTMt was proved to be a promising adsorbent for VOCs removal.
