Appraising efficacy of existing and advanced technologies for the remediation of beta-blockers from wastewater: A review

The discharge of emerging pollutants, such as beta-blockers (BB), has been recognized as one of the major threats to the environment due to the ecotoxicity associated with these emerging pollutants. The BB are prescribed to treat high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases; however, even at lower concentration, these pollutants can pose eco-toxic impacts towards aquatic organisms. Additionally, owing to their recalcitrant nature, BB are not effectively removed through conventional technologies, such as activated sludge process, trickling filter and moving bed bioreactor; thus, it is essential to understand the degradation mechanism of BB in established as well as embryonic technologies, like adsorption, electro-oxidation, Fenton process, ultraviolet-based advance oxidation process, ozonation, membrane systems, wetlands and algal treatment. In this regard, this review articulates the recalcitrant nature of BB and their associated removal technologies. Moreover, the major advantages and limitations of these BB removal technologies along with the recent advancements with regard to the application of innovative materials and strategies have also been elucidated. Therefore, the present review intends to aid the researchers in improving the BB removal efficiency of these technologies, thus alleviating the problem of the release of BB into the environment.

Impact of microalgae species and solution salinity on algal treatment of wastewater reverse osmosis concentrate

Six common microalgal species, including freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus abundans, Chlorella vulgaris, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Coelastrum microporum, and marine microalgae Nannochloropsis salina and Dunaliella tertiolecta, were tested in batch treatment to identify the most promising species for remediating a municipal wastewater reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC). Selected species were then studied at different ROC salinity levels (5, 10, and 15 g TDS/L) in semi-continuous treatment to evaluate their potential for nutrient remediation, and biogas production through anaerobic digestion. S. abundans, C. vulgaris, and N. salina showed higher potential for growth and nutrient remediation under salinity stress. Further tests revealed that N. salina adapted well to ROC conditions, and S. abundans could grow better and had higher tolerance to the elevated salinity than C. vulgaris. S. abundans and N. salina performed better for removing nutrients and organic matter (11.5-18 mg/L/d TN, 7.1-8.2 mg/L/d TP, and 8.6-12.4 mg/L/d DOC). Increasing salinity led to growth inhibition and N uptake reduction for freshwater species but had no significant effect on TP removal. Biochemical methane potential tests showed the algal biomass produced a significant amount of methane (e.g., up to 422 mL CH₄/g VS for N. salina), suggesting the algae generated from the ROC treatment could produce significant amounts of energy through anaerobic digestion without the need for pretreatment. This study showed the environmental and economic potential of the algal system for future applications.

The dual function of the algal treatment: Antibiotic elimination combined with CO2 fixation

The study provided an algal treatment to achieve dual function with antibiotic elimination and CO₂ fixation simultaneously. Two widely used antibiotics, cefradine and amoxicillin were selected as the target compounds. First of all, we assessed the influence of light intensity on algal growth and antibiotic removal efficiency to obtain the optimal light intensity. Secondly, after the algal antibiotic treatment, the CO₂ capture capacities at varied CO₂ volume concentrations were assessed and compared. Significant improvement in the removal efficiency of cefradine occurred when CO₂ was added into the treatment. Change in the content of photosynthetic pigments and the activities of RuBisCO and carbonic anhydrase occurred as the algal responses to the treatment condition. Our results showed that Chlorella pyrenoidosa performed better than Microcystis aeruginosa in both the antibiotic removal efficiency and the CO₂ capture capacity. In the integrated algal treatment, the remove rate of antibiotic has been improved by 30.16% and at the same time, the CO₂ absorption rate has been promoted by 10.94%. Metabolite analyses also revealed the mechanism involved, which proved the crucial role of the algae in the biodegradation of the target antibiotic.
