Covalent organic frameworks: Pioneering remediation solutions for organic pollutants

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a promising class of crystalline porous materials with customizable structures, high surface areas, and tunable functionalities. Their unique properties make them attractive candidates for addressing environmental contamination caused by pharmaceuticals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and endocrine disruptors (EDCs). This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements and applications of COFs in removing and remedying various environmental contaminants. We delve into the synthesis, properties, and performance of COFs and their potential limitations and future prospects.

Research progress of the combination of COFs materials with food safety detection

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have received lots of attention due to their multiple advantages such as high specific surface area, controlled pore size, and excellent stability. When detecting food contaminants, the matrix effect brought by complex food samples can significantly affect the accuracy of the results. How to attenuate matrix effect has always been a major challenge. Utilizing the advantages of COFs and applying them to detect food contaminants is currently a key research direction. The aim of this work is to provide a systematic summary of sample pretreatment techniques and detection techniques combined with COFs, which include almost all current techniques combined with COFs. In addition, the principles of combining COFs with different techniques are explained. Finally, the research foci and development direction of COFs in food contaminant detection are discussed. This is an important reference for the future development of food safety and the design of COFs.

Research progress on nanomaterial-based matrices for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis

Matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a novel soft ionization bio-mass spectrometry technology emerging in the 1980s, which can realize rapid detection of non-volatile, highly polar, and thermally unstable macromolecules. However, the analysis of small molecular compounds has been a major problem for MALDI-TOF MS all the time. In the MALDI analysis process based on traditional matrices, large numbers of interference peaks in the low molecular weight area and "sweet spots" phenomenon are produced, so the detection method needs to be further optimized. The promotion of matrix means the improvement of MALDI performance. In recent years, many new nanomaterial-based matrices have been successfully applied to the analysis of small molecular compounds, which makes MALDI applicable to a wider range of detection and useful in more fields such as pharmacy and environmental science. In this paper, the newly developed MALDI matrix categories in recent years are reviewed initially. Meanwhile, the potential applications, advantages and disadvantages of various matrices are analyzed. Finally, the future development prospects of nanomaterial-based matrices are also prospected.

Adsorption Behavior of a Ternary Covalent Organic Polymer Anchored with SO3H for Ciprofloxacin

Owing to the poor treatment efficiency of wastewater containing fluoroquinolones (FQs), effective removal of such pollutants has become a significant issue in waste management. In this study, a ternary covalent organic polymer anchored with SO3H (COP-SO3H) was designed using the Schiff reaction and a multicomponent solvent thermal method. The synthesized COP-SO3H polymer possesses multiple functional binding sites, including amide groups, sulfonic groups, and aromatic frameworks, enabling it to effectively adsorb ciprofloxacin (which belongs to FQs) through mechanisms such as pore-filling effects, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions, and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. COP-SO3H demonstrated outstanding adsorption performance for ciprofloxacin, exhibiting a high adsorption capacity, broad pH stability, strong resistance to ionic interference, and good regenerability. Moreover, it displayed preferential selectivity toward fluoroquinolone antibiotics. The present study not only investigates the intricate structural and functional design of COP-SO3H materials but also presents potential applications for the efficient adsorption of specific antibiotics.

An efficient Pt@MXene platform for the analysis of small-molecule natural products

Small-molecule (m/z<500) natural products have rich biological activity and significant application value thus need to be effectively detected. Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI MS) has become a powerful detection tool for small-molecule analysis. However, more efficient substrates need to be developed to improve the efficiency of SALDI MS. Thus, platinum nanoparticle-decorated Ti₃C₂ MXene (Pt@MXene) was synthesized in this study as an ideal substrate for SALDI MS in positive ion mode and exhibited excellent performance for the high-throughput detection of small molecules. Compared with using MXene, GO, and CHCA matrix, a stronger signal peak intensity and wider molecular coverage was obtained using Pt@MXene in the detection of small-molecule natural products, with a lower background, excellent salt and protein tolerance, good repeatability, and high detection sensitivity. The Pt@MXene substrate was also successfully used to quantify target molecules in medicinal plants. The proposed method has potentially wide application.

Surface molecularly imprinted-based matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry for highly selective and sensitive direct analysis of paraquat in complicated samples

Herein, a novel surface molecularly imprinted-based matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SMI-MALDI-TOF MS) method for direct target paraquat (PQ) analysis in complicated samples is reported. Notably, a captured analyte-imprinted material can be directly detected via MALDI-TOF MS by using imprinted material as nanomatrix. Using this strategy, the molecular specific affinity performance of surface molecularly imprinted polymers (SMIPs) and the high-sensitivity detection capability of MALDI-TOF MS was integrated. The introduction of SMI endowed the nanomatrix with the capacity for rebinding the target analyte and ensuring specificity, prevented the interfering organic matrix, and enhanced the analyzing sensitivity. By using paraquat (PQ) as a template, dopamine as a monomer, and covalent organic frameworks with a carboxyl group (C-COFs) as a substrate, polydopamine (PDA) was decorated on C-COFs via a simple self-assembly procedure to generate an analyte-based surface molecularly imprinted polymer (C-COF@PDA-SMIP), which served the dual function of SMIP capturing the target analytes and high-efficiency ionization. Thus, a reliable MALDI-TOF MS detection PQ with high selectivity and sensitivity as well as an interference-free background was achieved. The synthesis and enrichment conditions of C-COF@PDA-SMIPs were optimized, and its structure and property were characterized. Under optimal experimental conditions, the proposed method achieved highly selective and ultrasensitive detection of PQ from 5 to 500 pg mL^-1, and the limit of detection was as low as 0.8 pg mL^-1, which is at least three orders of magnitude lower than that achieved without enrichment. In addition, the specificity of the proposed method was superior to that of C-COFs and nonimprinted polymers. Moreover, this method exhibited reproducibility, stability, and high salt tolerance. Lastly, the practical applicability of the method was successfully verified by analyzing complicated samples, such as grass and orange.

Paraquat and Diquat: Recent Updates on Their Pretreatment and Analysis Methods since 2010 in Biological Samples

Paraquat (PQ) and diquat (DQ) are quaternary ammonium herbicides which have been used worldwide for controlling the growth of weeds on land and in water. However, PQ and DQ are well known to be toxic. PQ is especially toxic to humans. Moreover, there is no specific antidote for PQ poisoning. The main treatment for PQ poisoning is hemoperfusion to reduce the PQ concentration in blood. Therefore, it is essential to be able to detect PQ and DQ concentrations in biological samples. This critical review summarizes the articles published from 2010 to 2022 and can help researchers to understand the development of the sample treatment and analytical methods for the determination of PQ and DQ in various types of biological samples. The sample preparation includes liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction based on different novel materials, microextration methods, and other methods. Analytical methods for quantifying PQ and DQ, such as different chromatography and spectroscopy methods, electrochemical methods, and immunological methods, are illustrated and compared. We focus on the latest advances in PQ and DQ treatment and the application of new technologies for these analyses. In our opinion, tandem mass spectrometry is a good choice for the determination of PQ and DQ, due to its high sensitivity, high selectivity, and high accuracy. As far as we are concerned, the best LOD of 4 pg/mL for PQ in serum can be obtained.

Rapid detection of heterocyclic aromatic amines in cakes by digital imaging colorimetry based on magnetic solid phase extraction with sulfonated hyper-cross-linked polymers

To improve the hydrophobicity and poor separability of hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) in extraction, a porous magnetic adsorbent (Fe₃O₄@SHCP) was constructed by facile post-modification to introduce sulfonic acid groups and magnetic nanoparticles for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Owing to the double extraction mechanism adopted by Fe₃O₄@SHCP, it has a high extraction efficiency for HAAs. Coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), 5 HAAs in baked cakes were detected at one time. Under optimal extraction conditions, the enrichment factor of HAAs was up to 952-986, with LODs at 0.05-0.3 ng·g^-1. Based on the HPLC method, novel digital imaging colorimetry (DIC) was developed to accurately and rapidly monitor HAAs in cakes. Additionally, the established DIC method has been used to successfully evaluate the effect of baking temperature and duration on HAAs in baked cakes.

A Label-Free Electrochemical Aptasensor Based on Zn/Fe Bimetallic MOF Derived Nanoporous Carbon for Ultra-Sensitive and Selective Determination of Paraquat in Vegetables

Paraquat (PQ) has high acute toxicity, even at low concentrations. For most people, the main pathway of exposure to PQ is through the diet. Therefore, the development of simple and efficient methods for PQ testing is critical for ensuring food safety. In this study, a new electrochemical detection strategy for paraquat is proposed based on the specific binding of PQ to its nucleic acid aptamer. Firstly, the Zn/Fe bimetallic ZIF derived nanoporous carbon (Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC) and nickel hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles (NiHCF-NPs) were sequentially modified onto the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). NiHCF-NPs served as the signal probes, while Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC facilitated electron transfer and effectively enhanced the sensing signal of NiHCF-NPs. Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) were then electrodeposited on the NiHCF-NPs/Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC/GCE and then the thiolated aptamer was assembled on the AuNPs/NiHCF-NPs/Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC/GCE via Au-S bonding. When incubated with PQ, the formation of PQ–aptamer complexes delayed the interfacial electron transport reaction of NiHCF-NPs, which caused a decrease in the current signals. As a result, simple and highly sensitive detection of PQ can be readily achieved by detecting the signal changes. A linear range was obtained from 0.001 to 100 mg/L with a detection limit as low as 0.34 μg/L. Due to the recognition specificity of the aptamer to its target molecule, the proposed method has excellent anti-interference ability. The prepared electrochemical aptasensor was successfully used for PQ assay in lettuce, cabbage and agriculture irrigation water samples with recoveries ranging from 96.20% to 104.02%, demonstrating the validity and practicality of the proposed method for PQ detection in real samples.

Electrochemical paraquat sensor based on lead oxide nanoparticles

1,1-Dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dichloride known as paraquat is a popular well-known herbicide that is widely used in agriculture around the world. However, paraquat is a highly toxic chemical causing damage to vital organs including the respiratory system, liver, heart, and kidneys and death. Therefore, detection of paraquat is still necessary to protect life and the environment. In this work, an electrochemical sensor based on lead oxide nanoparticles (PbO-NPs) modified on a screen-printed silver working electrode (SPE) has been fabricated for paraquat detection at room temperature. The PbO-NPs have been synthesized by using a sparking method via two Pb metal wires. The electrochemical paraquat sensors have been prepared by a simple drop-casting of PbO-NPs solution on the surface of the SPE. The PbO-NPs/SPE sensor exhibits a linear response in the range from 1 mM to 5 mM with good reproducibility and high sensitivity (204.85 μA mM⁻¹ cm⁻²) for paraquat detection at room temperature. The PbO-NPs/SPE sensor shows high selectivity to paraquat over other popular herbicides such as glyphosate, glufosinate-ammonium and butachlor-propanil. The application of the PbO-NPs/SPE sensor is also demonstrated via the monitoring of paraquat contamination in juice and milk.

The PbO nanoparticles-based electrochemical sensor can be integrated into a smartphone for on-site field testing of paraquat with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Monolithic Gold Nanoparticles/Thiol-β-cyclodextrin-Functionalized TiO2 Nanowires for Enhanced SALDI MS Detection and Imaging of Natural Products

Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI MS) has been successfully applied in the analysis of various small molecules. In this work, gold nanoparticles/thiol-β-cyclodextrin-functionalized TiO₂ nanowires (AuNPs/SH-β-CD-TiO₂ NWs) were prepared to enhance the performance of SALDI MS and mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). A monolithic TiO₂ film was first grown on an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slide via a modified sol-gel method and treated in an alkaline environment to form nanowires. TiO₂ NWs were chemically modified by SH-β-CD for immobilizing AuNPs densely and strongly. Compared with the conventional organic matrix 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB), the prepared AuNPs/SH-β-CD-TiO₂ NWs showed superior performances on detection sensitivity, repeatability, and analyte coverage. Analytes typically detectable with negative-ion matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) MS could also be observed using AuNPs/SH-β-CD-TiO₂ NWs in the positive ion mode. Its successful usage efficiently enhanced the SALDI MS detection of various small molecules such as carbohydrates, fatty acids, and bile acids in the positive ion mode. The developed SALDI substrate was further used to characterize and discriminate the natural and in vitro cultured Calculus Bovis, as well as natural and artificial Moschus. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of several natural products in spearmint leaves and potato tubers was explored by tissue imprinting and deposition on the AuNPs/SH-β-CD-TiO₂ NW surface for SALDI MSI in dual-polarity mode, respectively. The wide application and satisfied detection sensitivity make AuNPs/SH-β-CD-TiO₂ NWs ideal for SALDI MS and MSI of various natural products.

Functionalized triazine-based covalent organic frameworks containing quinoline via aza-Diels-Alder reaction for enhanced lithium-sulfur batteries performance

The development of functional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with specific properties is an emerging research field. In the current work, COF-SQ-Ph was synthesized through the aza-Diels-Alder reaction between phenylacetylene and the matrix COF-SQ (triazine-based COF) generated from the organic monomers 2, 4, 6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1, 3, 5-triazine and 2, 5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde in flask. The functionalized COF-SQ-Ph with an extended π-conjugated structure and enhanced structural stability was used as the sulfur loading recipient to prepare sulfur cathodes for lithium-sulfur batteries. Sulfur-impregnated COF-SQ-Ph marked as COF-SQ-Ph-S displayed better cycling stability with a specific capacity of 618 mA h g^-1 after 150 cycles due to the lithiophilic interaction between lithium polysulfides and nitrogen atoms from quinoline and triazine moieties in COF-SQ-Ph-S. The functionalization of triazine-based COFs through a cycloaddition reaction in flask could promote the large-scale preparation of tailored COFs and the post-synthesis modification of COF-SQ.
