Insights into structural and functional regulation of chalcopyrite and enhanced mechanism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in advanced oxidation process (AOP): A review

Chalcopyrite, renowned for its distinctive mixed redox-couple characteristics, exhibits excellent electron transfer properties both on its surface and within its crystal structure. This unique characteristic has attracted significant attention in various fields, including optics, electronics, and magnetism, as well as demonstrated remarkable catalytic efficacy in the environmental field. The rapid and effective electron transfer capability of a catalyst is crucial for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, the performance of CuFeS2 in AOPs is hindered by its low electron transfer efficacy. This review aims to summarize the key steps and mechanisms of chalcopyrite-induced AOPs and provide strategies for enhancing effective electron transfer efficacies by controlling the structure and function of synthetic/natural chalcopyrite. These strategies include enhancing the catalytic performance of chalcopyrite and constructing composites to enhance catalytic activity (e.g., chelating agents, heterojunctions). Additionally, the factors influencing the generation of reactive oxygen species in chalcopyrite-induced AOPs are investigated, such as the types and properties of oxidants (e.g., H2O2, peroxymonocarbonate), the microstructure of catalysts, and reaction conditions in catalytic systems (e.g., pH values, dosage, temperature). Future perspectives on the applications of chalcopyrite are presented at the end of this paper. Overall, this review assists in narrowing the scope of chalcopyrite studies in AOPs and aids researchers in optimizing synthetic/natural catalysts for contaminant treatment.

Vanadium in the Environment: Biogeochemistry and Bioremediation

Vanadium(V) is a highly toxic multivalent, redox-sensitive element. It is widely distributed in the environment and employed in various industrial applications. Interactions between V and (micro)organisms have recently garnered considerable attention. This Review discusses the biogeochemical cycling of V and its corresponding bioremediation strategies. Anthropogenic activities have resulted in elevated environmental V concentrations compared to natural emissions. The global distributions of V in the atmosphere, soils, water bodies, and sediments are outlined here, with notable prevalence in Europe. Soluble V(V) predominantly exists in the environment and exhibits high mobility and chemical reactivity. The transport of V within environmental media and across food chains is also discussed. Microbially mediated V transformation is evaluated to shed light on the primary mechanisms underlying microbial V(V) reduction, namely electron transfer and enzymatic catalysis. Additionally, this Review highlights bioremediation strategies by exploring their geochemical influences and technical implementation methods. The identified knowledge gaps include the particulate speciation of V and its associated environmental behaviors as well as the biogeochemical processes of V in marine environments. Finally, challenges for future research are reported, including the screening of V hyperaccumulators and V(V)-reducing microbes and field tests for bioremediation approaches.

Harnessing the power of natural minerals: A comprehensive review of their application as heterogeneous catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for organic pollutant degradation

The release of untreated wastewater into water bodies has become a significant environmental concern, resulting in the accumulation of refractory organic pollutants that pose risks to human health and ecosystems. Wastewater treatment methods, including biological, physical, and chemical techniques, have limitations in achieving complete removal of the refractory pollutants. Chemical methods, particularly advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), have gained special attention for their strong oxidation capacity and minimal secondary pollution. Among the various catalysts used in AOPs, natural minerals offer distinct advantages, such as low cost, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness. Currently, the utilization of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs lacks thorough investigation and review. This work addresses the need for a comprehensive review of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs. The structural characteristics and catalytic performance of different natural minerals are discussed, emphasizing their specific roles in AOPs. Furthermore, the review analyzes the influence of process factors, including catalyst dosage, oxidant addition, pH value, and temperature, on the catalytic performance of natural minerals. Strategies for enhancing the catalytic efficiency of AOPs mediated by natural minerals are explored, mainly including physical fields, reductant addition, and cocatalyst utilization. The review also examines the practical application prospects and main challenges associated with the use of natural minerals as heterogeneous catalysts in AOPs. This work contributes to the development of sustainable and efficient approaches for organic pollutant degradation in wastewater.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid mediated vanadium reduction and redistribution in vanadium-containing tailings

The microbially- and chemically-mediated redox process is critical in controlling the fate of vanadium (V) in tailing environment. Although the microbial reduction of V has been widely studied, the coupled biotic reduction mediated by beneficiation reagents and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. Herein, the reduction and redistribution of V in V-containing tailings and Fe/Mn oxide aggregates mediated by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid were explored. The dissolution of Fe-(hydr)oxides by oxalic acid promoted the microbe-mediated V release from solid-phase. After 48-day of reaction, the dissolved V concentrations in the bio-oxalic acid treatment reached maximum values of 1.72 ± 0.36 mg L^-1 and 0.42 ± 0.15 mg L^-1 in the tailing system and the aggregate system, respectively, significantly higher than those in control (0.63 ± 0.14 mg L^-1 and 0.08 ± 0.02 mg L^-1). As the electron donor, oxalic acid enhanced the electron transfer process of S. oneidensis MR-1 for V(V) reduction. The mineralogical characterization of final products indicates that S. oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid promoted solid-state conversion from V₂O₅ to NaV₆O₁₅. Collectively, this study demonstrates that microbe-mediated V release and redistribution in solid-phase were promoted by oxalic acid, suggesting that the role of organic agents for the V biogeochemical cycle in natural systems deserves greater attention.

Electron transfer routes in nitrate-pentavalent vanadium co-contaminated system of oligotrophic microbiology niche

Microbial techniques have been extensively used for the remediation of nitrate and V(V) co-contaminations, but the mechanisms of electron and substances transport and metabolism of co-contaminations under oligotrophic niche have been largely overlooked. This study quantified the electron transfer and consumption, substance transfer, and metabolic pathways in the nitrate and V(V) co-contamination system under oligotrophic condition to explore the underlying mechanisms by characterizing the products and elucidating conventional cognitive pathways. This study compared the composition of the precipitates under the conditions of sufficient and insufficient carbon sources using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and discovered the re-oxidation process of the already reduced V(IV). Electronic evidence for the re-oxidation process of V(IV) was also provided by electron transfer and quantitative analysis. Besides, this study found that the electron contribution ratio of NO₃^--N → NO₂^--N and V(V) → V(IV) reduction was 40.2:1. In addition, based on the functional prediction of PICRUSt 2, it was found that the utilization of intracellular reserve carbon source and enzymes in the transport chain were enhanced in oligotrophic microbiology niche. These results provide new insights into the stability of co-contamination reduction in oligotrophic microbiology niche and demonstrate a new mobilization pathway for V(V) in oligotrophic systems.

Benzoquinone-assisted heterogeneous activation of PMS on Fe3S4 via formation of active complexes to mediate electron transfer towards enhanced bisphenol A degradation

Benzoquinone (BQ) is of great significance for enhancement of contaminants degradation in the homogeneous oxidation system of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). However, the role of BQ in the heterogeneous activation of PMS for contaminants oxidation is still not clear. Herein, this work reported that the addition of BQ into the Fe₃S₄/PMS system could effectively enhance the degradation and mineralization of bisphenol A (BPA). Mechanistic study uncovered that the BQ and PMS would form active complexes (BQ-PMS*) on the surface of Fe₃S₄ and the excited BQ-PMS* can oxidize the BPA. To be specific, the electron of BPA was extracted by BQ-PMS* and then transfer to the surface of Fe₃S₄. The surface electron can induce the change of valence state of S and Fe elements, which can trigger the degradation of BPA and inhibit the decomposition of BQ itself. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to unveil the positive role of BQ in the heterogeneous activation of PMS, which may shed new light on the establishment of high-efficient PMS-based oxidation technology for remediation of organic pollutant.

Activation of Persulfate for Degrading Tetracycline Using the Leaching Residues of the Lead-Zinc Flotation Tailing

Inappropriate disposal of leaching residues from the lead-zinc tailings recovery process may result in environmental pollution. Its recycling and reuse remain a prevalent topic in environmental science and technology. It was roasted to prepare leaching residues-based materials (TLRS) in this work, and the TLRS were creatively used as the catalyst to active sodium persulfate (PS) to degrade organic pollutants. Degradation of tetracycline using the TLRS–PS system was evaluated, and the treating parameters were optimized. Roasting resulted in the exposure of active sites on TLRS surface, in which transition metals can donate electrons to PS to form SO₄^·−. SO₄^·− can further react with OH⁻ to form ·OH. Formation of these radicals was confirmed by both quenching experiments and EPR analysis. Under optimized conditions, 85% of the TC can be degraded in 3.0 h, and ~50% of degraded TC was mineralized to CO₂ and H₂O. The performance of TLRS barely changed after four reuses, suggesting the chemical stability of TLRS. The presence of dissolved substance in the water matrix could weaken the performance of the TLRS–PS system. A mechanism of TC degradation was proposed based on the experimental results and literature. These preliminary results provide us new insight on the reuse of lead-zinc flotation tailings.
