Insights into conduction band flexibility induced by spin polarization in titanium-based metal–organic frameworks for photocatalytic water splitting and pollutants degradation

The highly efficient photodegradation of 4-bromophenol by TiO2/g-C3N4 nano photocatalyst with LED visible light

Since traditional photocatalysts have suffered from higher charge carrier recombination and moderate photocatalytic efficiency, developing photocatalysts is crucial for water treatment objectives. Hence, the various ratios of TiO2 on g-C3N4 (CN) to form nano photocatalysts were synthesized by the solvothermal method. The 30%TiO2/CN showed the best performance to degradation and debromination of 4-bromophenol (4-BP) solution completely (kobs = 6.6 × 10-2 min-1) under visible light emitted by LED (420 nm) in 30 min. Remarkably, the photocatalyst showed superior stability and reusability, maintaining its efficiency after four cycles of 4-BP degradation. The dominant ROS participating in 4-BP degradation were ●O-2 and photogenerated holes (h+), as investigated by free radical scavenging tests. The optical properties analysis revealed that the introduction of TiO2 to the bulk CN decreases electron-hole recombination and improve photocatalytic performance by facilitating electrons transfer through the TiO2 nanoparticles in a chain. The findings of this study showed that the TiO2/CN photocatalyst is a promising catalyst for the degradation of 4-BP. It exhibits a higher rate constant and photocatalytic efficiency compared with previous studies conducted under visible light irradiation.

Facile Synthesis of a Crystalline Zinc Sulfide/Chitosan Biopolymer Nanocomposite: Characterization and Application for Photocatalytic Degradation of Textile Dyes and Anticancer Activity

In the present study, we have synthesized a zinc sulfide/chitosan (ZS/CS) nanocomposite by utilizing simple, economical, and environmentally friendly methods. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized by different analytical techniques such as XRD, FE-SEM, EDS, and FTIR to determine the phase structure, morphology, and elemental composition. FTIR spectroscopy was used to confirm the functional groups of the synthesized zinc sulfide (ZS) nanoparticles and ZS/CS composite. Besides, the optical properties of the as-synthesized nanocomposite was analyzed by a UV-visible spectrophotometer, and the estimated band gap energy is ∼3.03 eV. The photocatalytic efficiency of the synthesized ZS/CS nanocomposite was investigated against two textile dyes, Crystal Violet (CV) and Acid Red-I (AR-I), under UV-visible light irradiation. The nanocomposite showed excellent photocatalytic activity against the dyes, and photodegradation was estimated to be about 93.44 and 90.67% for CV and AR-I, respectively. The nanocomposite was reused for three consecutive cycles. The results revealed that the photocatalyst displayed good reusability during the photocatalytic decomposition and thus is considered a cost-effective and promising photocatalyst in degrading dye pollutants. The kinetic study proved that the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics was followed by the degradation process. We also examined the anticancer activity of ZS and ZS/CS against human breast and myelogenous leukemia cancer cell lines, namely, MCF-7 and K-562, and the half minimal inhibitory concentrations were found to be less than 50 μg/mL.

New breakthrough in rapid degradation of lignin derivative compounds · A novel high stable and reusable green organic photocatalyst

The pulp and paper sectors are thriving yet pose significant environmental threats to water bodies, mainly due to the substantial release of pollutants. Lignin-derived compounds are among the most problematic of these contaminants. To address this issue, we present our initial results on utilizing organic semiconductor photocatalysis under visible light for treating lignin-derived compounds. Our investigation has been centered around creating a green and cost-effective organic semiconductor photocatalyst. This catalyst is designed using a structure of bagasse cellulose spheres to support PM6 (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-fluorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))]: MeIC (3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-cyclopentane-1,3-dione[c]-1-methyl-thiophe))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']-dithiophene)). This photocatalyst demonstrates remarkable efficiency, achieving over 91 % degradation of lignin-derived compounds. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to three main factors: (1) The ability of PM6 to broaden MeIC's absorption range from 300 to 800 nm, allowing for effective utilization of visible light; (2) the synergistic interaction between PM6 and MeIC, which ensures compatible energy levels and a vast, evenly spread surface area, promoting charge mobility and extensive donor/acceptor interfaces. This synergy significantly enhances the generation and transport of carriers, resulting in a high production of free radicals that accelerate the decomposition of organic materials; (3) The deployment of PM6:MeIC on biomass-based carriers increases the interaction surface with the organic substances. Notably, PM6: MeIC showcases outstanding durability, with its degradation efficiency remaining between 84 % and 91 % across 100 cycles. This study presents a promising approach for designing advanced photocatalysts aimed at degrading common pollutants in papermaking wastewater.

Fe doping mechanism of Na0.44MnO2 tunnel phase cathode electrode in sodium-ion batteries

Due to its stability and low cost, the tunnel-style sodium-manganese oxide (Na0.44MnO2) material is deemed a popular cathode choice for sodium-ion rechargeable batteries. However, the Jahn-Teller effect caused by Mn3+ in the material results in poor capacity and cycling stability. The purpose of this experimental study is to partially replace Mn3+ with Fe3+, in order to reduce the Jahn-Teller effect of the material during charging and discharging process. The results of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the content of Mn3+ decreased after Fe3+ doping. Electrochemical studies show that the Na0.44Mn0.994Fe0.006O2 cathode has better rate performance (exhibits a reversible capacity of 87.9 mAh/g at 2 C) and cycle stability in sodium-ion batteries. The diffusion coefficient of sodium ions increases by Fe3+ doping. The excellent rate performance and capacity improvement are verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. After doping, the band gap decreases significantly, and the results show that the state density of O 2p increases near the Fermi level, which promotes the oxidation-reduction of oxygen. This work provides a straightforward approach to enhance the performance of Na0.44MnO2 nanorods, and this performance improvement has guiding significance for the design of other materials in the energy storage domain.

Rational synthesis of two isostructural thiophene-containing metal-organic frameworks toward photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

In this work, thiophene moieties (as the crucial functional groups) have been successfully incorporated into the skeleton of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by using thienyl-substituted triazole ligands. Reaction of AgCF3SO3 with 3-phenyl-5-(2-thienyl)-1,2,4-triazole (PTTzH) or 3,5-bis(2-thienyl)-1,2,4-triazole (BTTzH) afforded two isostructural MOFs (AgTz-3 and AgTz-4) in gram-scale. AgTz-4 with higher thiophene content showed significantly stronger photocatalytic activity than AgTz-3 with lower thiophene content. Noteworthy, the photodegradation rate constants of AgTz-4 were 0.055 mg·L-1·min-1 for rhodamine B and 0.24 min-1 for salazosulfapyridine, which is comparable or even higher than some MOF-based materials reported in the literature. More importantly, AgTz-4 demonstrated good reusability and stability after four cycles of photodegradation. Our experimental results revealed that the enhanced photodegradation efficiency can be attributed to the increased light absorption capacity and optimized band structure of Ag-MOFs resulting from the introduction of thiophene groups into MOF structures.

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production from Pure Water Using a IEF-11/g-C3N4 S-Scheme Heterojunction

Construction of S-scheme heterojunction offers a promising way to enhance the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts for converting solar energy into chemical energy. However, the photocatalytic H2 production in pure water without sacrificial agents is still a challenge. Herein, the IEF-11 with the best photocatalytic H2 production performance in MOFs and suitable band structure was selected and firstly constructed with g-C3N4 to obtain a S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic H2 production from pure water. As a result, the novel IEF-11/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalysts exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic H2 production performance in pure water without any sacrificial agent, with a rate of 576 μmol/g/h, which is about 8 times than that of g-C3N4 and 23 times of IEF-11. The novel IEF-11/g-C3N4 photocatalysts also had a photocatalytic H2 production rate of up to 92 μmol/g/h under visible light and a good photocatalytic stability. The improved performance can be attributed to the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers, faster charge transfer efficiency and longer photogenerated carrier lifetimes, which comes from the forming of S-scheme heterojunction in the IEF-11/g-C3N4 photocatalyst. This work is a promising guideline for obtaining MOF-based or g-C3N4-based photocatalysts with great photocatalytic water splitting performance.

Cr(VI) and doxorubicin adsorptive capture by a novel bionanocomposite of Ti-MOF@TiO2 incorporated with watermelon biochar and chitosan hydrogel

Biodegradable polymers, biochars and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have manifested as top prospects for elimination of harmful pollutants. In the current study, Ti-MOF was synthesized and decorated with TiO2 nanoparticles, then embedded into watermelon peel biochar and functionalized with chitosan hydrogel to produce Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH. Various instruments were employed to assure the effective production of the bionanocomposite. The HR-TEM and SEM studies referred to excellent surface porosity and homogeneity of Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH bionanocomposite, with 51.02-74.23 nm. Based on the BET analysis, the mesoporous structure has a significant surface area of 366.04 m2 g-1 and a considerable total pore volume of 11.38 × 10-2 cm3 g-1, with a mean pore size of 12.434 nm. Removal of doxorubicin (DOX) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was examined under various experimentations. Pseudo-second order kinetic models in addition to Langmuir isotherm offered the best fitting. Thermodynamic experiments of the two contaminants demonstrated spontaneous and endothermic interactions. After five subsequent adsorption and desorption cycles, Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH bionanocomposite demonstrated an exceptional recyclability for the elimination of DOX and Cr(VI) ions, reaching 97.96 % and 95.28 %, respectively. Finally, the newly designed Ti-MOF@TiO2@WMPB@CTH bionanocomposite demonstrated a high removing efficiency of Cr(VI) ions and DOX from samples of real water.

Nitrogen vacancy-induced spin polarization of ultrathin zinc porphyrin nanosheets for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Metalloporphyrin compounds have excellent electron transfer and visible light absorption ability, demonstrating broad application prospects in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, the nitrogen vacancies (NVs) were successfully introduced into zinc porphyrin (ZnTCPP) ultrathin nanosheets through surface N2 plasma treatment, which is environmentally friendly and can react in low temperatures. Furthermore, the prepared nitrogen vacancies-zinc porphyrin (NVs-ZnTCPP) materials exhibited excellent photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity and selectivity, specifically, the CO production rate of ZnTCPP-1 (N2 plasma treatment, 1 min) achieved as high as 12.5 µmol g-1h-1, which is about 2.7 times greater than that of untreated ZnTCPP. Based on the experimental and density functional theory calculation (DFT) results, it is found that the promoted photocatalytic performance of NVs-ZnTCPP could be mainly attributed to nitrogen vacancy-induced spin polarization by reducing the reaction barriers and inhibiting the recombination of photoexcited carriers. This work provides a new perspective for the construction of vacancy-based metalloporphyrin, and further explores the intrinsic mechanism between the electron spin property and the performance of the photocatalyst.

Metal-organic frameworks as photocatalysts in energetic and environmental applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an exciting new class of porous materials with great potential for photocatalytic applications in the environmental and energy sectors. MOFs provide significant advantages over more traditional materials when used as photocatalysts due to their high surface area, adaptable topologies, and functional ability. In this article, we summarize current developments in the use of MOFs as photocatalysts for a variety of applications, such as CO2 reduction, water splitting, pollutant degradation, and hydrogen production. We discuss the fundamental properties of MOFs that make them ideal for photocatalytic applications, as well as strategies for improving their performance. The opportunities and challenges presented by this rapidly expanding field are also highlighted.

Enhanced adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 for chemical warfare agent simulants caused by its morphology and surface charge

The effective separation of toxic chemicals, including chemical warfare agents (CWAs), from the environment via adsorption is of great importance because such chemicals pose a significant threat to humans and ecosystems. To this end, the development of effective porous adsorbents for CWA removal has received significant attention. Understanding the specific interactions between adsorbents and CWAs must precede for the development of effective adsorbents. Herein, we report the relationship between the adsorption capacity of porous ZIF-8 and its morphological and surface characteristics. Four types of ZIF-8, which have different morphologies (such as cubic, rhombic dodecahedron, and leaf- and plate-shaped samples), were selectively prepared. The four types of ZIF-8 were found to have different surface charges owing to dissimilarly exposed components on the surfaces and additionally incorporated components. The specific surface charges of ZIF-8 were found to be closely related to their adsorption capacities for CWA simulants such as 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) and dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP). Cubic ZIF-8, with the most positive surface charge among four ZIF-8 samples, exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for CEES and DMMP via the effective polar interaction. Moreover, ZIF-8 exhibited excellent recyclability without losing its adsorption capacity and without critical morphological or structural changes.

Removal of organophosphorus flame retardant by biochar-coated nZVI activating persulfate: Synergistic mechanism of adsorption and catalytic degradation

Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) is a typical aromatic-based non-chlorinated organophosphorus flame retardant, which has been widely detected in a variety of environments and poses high environmental and human health risks. In this study, biochar coated nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was fabricated to activate persulfate (PS) to degrade TPhP from water. A range of biochars (BC400, BC500, BC600, BC700, and BC800) was prepared as potential support to coat nZVI by pyrolyzing corn stalk at 400, 500, 600, 700 and 800 °C. As outperformed other biochars in adsorption rate, adsorption capacity, and less reluctant to be influenced by environmental factors (pH, humic acid (HA), coexistence of anions), BC800 was to act as support to coat nZVI (labeled as BC800@nZVI). SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS characterization showed that nZVI was successfully supported on the BC800. Removal efficiency of 10 mg L-1 TPhP by BC800@nZVI/PS could reach to 96.9% with a high catalytic degradation kinetic rate of 0.0484 min^-1 under optimal condition. The removal efficiency remained stable in a wide pH range (3-9) and moderate concentration of HA and coexistence of anions, demonstrated the promising of using BC800@nZVI/PS system to eliminate TPhP contamination. Results from the radical scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments demonstrated radical pathway (i.e. SO₄·^- and HO·) and non-radical pathway via ¹O₂ both play important role in TPhP degradation. The TPhP degradation pathway was proposed based on the six degradation intermediates analyzed by LC-MS. This study illustrated the synergistic mechanism of adsorption and catalytic oxidation removal of TPhP by BC800@nZVI/PS system, and provided a cost-efficient approach for TPhP remediation.

1D/1D W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S S-scheme heterojunction with spatial charge separation for high-yield photocatalytic H2 evolution

Semiconductor photocatalytic water splitting is a green way to convert solar energy into chemical energy, but the recombination of electron and hole pairs and the low utilization of sunlight restrict the development of photocatalytic technology. By comparing the morphologies and hydrogen production properties of different proportions of solid solutions (Cd_xZn_1-xS), one-dimensional (1D) Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S nanorods (NRs) with the best photocatalytic properties are obtained. In addition, 1D W₁₈O₄₉ nanowires are assembled on the surface of 1D Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S NRs to construct a novel 1D/1D step-scheme (S-scheme) W₁₈O₄₉/Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S heterojunction photocatalyst. The W₁₈O₄₉/Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S heterojunction expands the optical absorption capacity of Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S NRs to provide more energy for the photoexcitation of electrons. The optimal hydrogen production rate of W₁₈O₄₉/Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S NRs with W₁₈O₄₉ content of 9 wt% is as high as 66.3 mmol·h^-1·g^-1, which is 5.7 times and 1.6 times higher than that of Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S NRs and 1 wt% Pt/Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S NRs. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9 wt% W₁₈O₄₉/Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S reaches 56.0 % and 25.9 % under light wavelength irradiation at 370 and 456 nm, respectively. After the 20 h cycle stability test, the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution does not decrease, due that the severe photo-corrosion of Cd_0.9Zn_0.1S NRs is efficiently inhibited. This work not only provides a simple and controllable synthesis method for the preparation of heterojunction structure, but also opens up a new way to improve the hydrogen evolution activity and stability of sulfur compounds.

Insights into dual effect of missing linker-cluster domain defects for photocatalytic 2e- ORR: Radical reaction and electron behavior

Photocatalytic 2e^- ORR paves a promising avenue for hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) production. However, the obscure structure-activity relationship between a specific structure and photocatalytic 2e^- ORR restricts the understanding of its intrinsic mechanism. In this work, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with missing linker-cluster domain (MLCD) defects were employed as a model to shed new light on the effect of MLCD defect on photocatalytic 2e^- ORR, which mainly focused on the radical reaction and electron behavior. Experiments and theoretical calculations revealed that incorporating MLCD defects significantly lowered the contribution rate of reactive superoxide radical (·O₂^-). Meanwhile, the retarded interfacial charge transfer via "Ti-O″ bridge was caused by the undesirable electron dissipation and augmented orbital-limited resistance induced by electron spin polarization. Therefore, the photocatalytic 2e^- ORR activity was decreased to 30% of its origin by construction MLCD defects. This study provides insights into the internal mechanism of photocatalytic 2e^- ORR for designing and optimizing excellent defective nanomaterials.

Ag3PO4-anchored La2Ti2O7 nanorod as a Z-Scheme heterostructure composite with boosted photogenerated carrier separation and enhanced photocatalytic performance under natural sunlight

Developing wide spectra-responsive photocatalysts has attracted considerable attention in the photocatalytic technology to achieve excellent catalytic activity. Ag₃PO₄, with strong response to light spectra shorter than 530 nm, shows extremely outstanding photocatalytic oxidation ability. Unfortunately, the photocorrosion of Ag₃PO₄ is still the biggest obstacle to its application. Herein, the La₂Ti₂O₇ nanorod was used to anchor Ag₃PO₄ nanoparticles in this study, and a novel Z-Scheme La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ heterostructure composite was constructed. Remarkably, the composite showed strong responsive to most of the spectra in natural sunlight. The Ag⁰ formed in-situ acted as the recombination center of photogenerated carriers, which promoted their efficient separation and contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance of the heterostructure. When the mass ratio of Ag₃PO₄ in the La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ catalyst was 50%, the degradation rate constant of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), chloroquine phosphate (CQ), tetracycline (TC), and phenol under natural sunlight irradiation were 0.5923, 0.4463, 0.1399, 0.0493, and 0.0096 min^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the photocorrosion of the composite was greatly inhibited, 76.49% of CQ and 83.96% of RhB were still degraded after four cycles. Besides, the holes and O₂^•- played a significant role in RhB degradation, and it included multiple mechanisms of deethylation, deamination, decarboxylation, and cleavage of ring-structures. Moreover, the treated solution can also show safety to the water receiving environment. Overall, the synthesized Z-Scheme La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ composite exhibited immense potential for removing various organic pollutants through photocatalytic technology under natural sunlight irradiation.

Pyridine-linked covalent triazine frameworks with bidirectional electron donor-acceptor for efficient organic pollution removal

Simultaneous regulation of adsorption and photocatalytic performance of covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) to achieve efficient control of organic pollution in water is a promising strategy, but remains a formidable challenge. Herein, pyridine linkers were innovatively introduced into pristine CTF (p-CTF) and the bidirectional electron donor-acceptor (EDA) system of contaminant-to-pyridine and pyridine-to-triazine was constructed inside. Experimental results combined with theoretical calculations revealed that pyridine units with π-deficient properties performed as electron acceptors and electron donors in the adsorption and photocatalytic processes, respectively. This special structure provided a directional pathway for electron transfer, which endowed CTFs with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic properties. Compared to p-CTF, pyridine-linked CTF (M-CTF) showed a 16-fold increase in adsorption capacity for naphthalene (973.4 μmol·g^-1). Benefiting from the optimized light absorption and electron transfer form (n → π*transition), M-CTF exhibited high regeneration efficiency after adsorption of both bisphenol A (94 % after 4 cycles) and naphthalene (95 % after 4 cycles). Besides, the removal performance of organic micropollutants from natural water showed a great advantage thanks to the bidirectional EDA system. Overall, the present study provides new insights into the optimization of electronic structures for carbon-based environmental functional materials applied to organic pollution control in water.
