Shell-induced enhancement of Fenton-like catalytic performance towards advanced oxidation processes: Concept, mechanism, and properties

Fenton-like advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are commonly used to eliminate recalcitrant organic pollutants as they produce highly reactive oxygen species through the reactions between the catalysts and oxidants. Recently, considerable attention has been directed towards shell-structured Fenton-like catalysts that offer high stability, maximum utilization of active sites, and exceptional catalytic performance. In this review, we have introduced the concept of several typical shell-forming architectures (e.g., hollow structure, core-shell structure, yolk-shell structure, particle-in-tube structure, and multi-shelled structure), elucidating their role in promoting Fenton-like reaction catalysis through the nanoconfinement mechanism. In each aspect, the correlation between the shell-induced effects and the Fenton-like catalytic performance is highlighted. Finally, future challenges and opportunities for the development of shell-structured Fenton-like catalysts towards AOPs are presented, offering bright practical application prospects.

Hollow Nanoreactors Unlock New Possibilities for Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes

As a novel type of catalytic material, hollow nanoreactors are expected to bring new development opportunities in the field of persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes due to their peculiar void-confinement, spatial compartmentation, and size-sieving effects. For such materials, however, further clarification on basic concepts and construction strategies, as well as a discussion of the inherent correlation between structure and catalytic activity are still required. In this context, this review aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of hollow nanoreactors for activating persulfate. Initially, hollow nanoreactors are classified according to the constituent components of the shell structure and their dimensionality. Subsequently, the different construction strategies of hollow nanoreactors are described in detail, while common synthesis methods for these construction strategies are outlined. Furthermore, the most representative advantages of hollow nanoreactors are summarized, and their intrinsic connections to the nanoreactor structure are elucidated. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of hollow nanoreactors are presented.

Oxidative polymerization versus degradation of organic pollutants in heterogeneous catalytic persulfate chemistry

Catalytic polymerization pathways in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have recently drawn much attention for organic pollutant elimination owing to the rapid removal kinetics, high selectivity, and recovery of organic carbon from wastewater. This work presents a review on the polymerization regimes in AOPs and their applications in wastewater decontamination. The review mainly highlights three critical issues in polymerization reactions induced by persulfate activation (Poly-PS-AOPs), including heterogeneous catalysts, persulfate activation pathways, and properties of organic substrates. The dominant influencing factors on the selection of catalysts, activation regimes of reactive oxygen species, and polymerization processes of organic substrates are discussed in detail. Moreover, we systematically demonstrate the merits and challenges of Poly-PS-AOPs upon pollutant degradation and polymer synthesis. We particularly highlight that Poly-PS-AOPs technology could be promising in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing heterocyclic organics and the synthesis of polymers and polymer-functionalized materials for advanced environmental and energy applications.
