Facile construction of robust Ru-Co3O4 Mott-Schottky catalyst enabling efficient dehydrogenation of ammonia borane for hydrogen generation

V-doped activated Ru/Ti2.5V0.5C2 dual-active center accelerate hydrogen production from ammonia borane

Designing and constructing the active center of Ru-based catalysts is the key to efficient hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB) for hydrogen production. Herein, V-doped Ru/Ti2.5V0.5C2 dual-active center catalysts were synthesized, showing excellent catalytic ability for AB hydrolysis. The corresponding turnover frequency value was 1072 min-1 at 298 K, and the hydrolysis rate rB of AB was 235 × 103 mL·min-1·gRu-1. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the interaction between V-doped Ti3C2 and catalytic metal Ru transfers electrons from Ti to Ru, resulting in electron-rich Ru species. According to density functional theory calculations, the activation energy and reaction dissociation energy of the reactants AB and H2O on V-doped catalysts were lower than those of Ru/Ti3C2, thus optimizing the catalytic kinetics of AB hydrolysis. The modification strategy of V-doped Ti3C2 provides a new pathway for the development of high-performance catalysts for AB hydrolysis.

Two-dimensional molybdenum boride coordinating with ruthenium nanoparticles to boost hydrogen generation from hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane

The coordination between carrier and active metal is critical to the catalytic efficiency of ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis reaction. In the present study, we report a new type of catalytic support based on molybdenum boride (MBene) MoAl1-xB and demonstrate that the effective combination of MoAl1-xB with Ru nanoparticles can realize the significantly enhanced performance for hydrogen generation. Owing to the efficient activation and dissociation of reactants, the optimal Ru/MoAl1-xB catalyst achieves the large turnover frequency of 494 molH2 molRu-1 min-1, high hydrogen generation rate of 119817 mL min-1 gRu-1 and favorable apparent activation energy of 39.2 kJ mol-1 for the catalytic hydrolysis of AB under alkaline-free condition. The isotopic test suggests the cleavage of OH bond in H2O is the rate-determining step for hydrolysis reaction, while the fracture of B-H bond in AB is also well revealed by attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Significantly, the flexible on-demand hydrogen generation is achieved by using chemical switches for on-off AB hydrolysis. This study provides a new support platform based on two-dimensional MBene to exploit efficient catalysts to boost AB dehydrogenation.

Ultralow RuO2 Doped NiS2 Heterojunction as a Multifunctional Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution linking to Biomass Organics Oxidation

Hydrogen energy and biomass energy are green and sustainable forms that can solve the energy crisis all over the world. Electrocatalytic water splitting is a marvelous way to produce hydrogen and biomass platform molecules can be added into the electrolyte to reduce the overpotential and meanwhile are converted into some useful organics, but the key point is the design of electrocatalyst. Herein, ultralow noble metal Ru is doped into NiS2 to form RuO2@NiS2 heterojunction. Amongst them, the 0.06 RuO2@NiS2 has low overpotentials of 363 mV for OER and 71 mV for HER in 1 m KOH, which are superior to the RuO2 and Pt/C. Besides, the 0.06 RuO2@NiS2 shows a low overpotential of 173 mV in 1 m KOH+0.1 m glycerol, and the glycerol is oxidized to glyceraldehyde and formic acid via the high Faraday efficiency GlyOR process, and the splitting voltage is only 1.17 V. In addition, the 0.06 RuO2@NiS2 has a low overpotential of 206 mV in 1 m KOH+0.1 m glucose, and the glucose is converted to glucaric acid, lactic acid, and formic acid. This work has a "one stone three birds" effect for the production of hydrogen, low splitting voltage, and high-value-added biomass chemicals.

Energy-Efficient Electrosynthesis of High Value-Added Active Chlorine Coupled with H2 Generation from Direct Seawater Electrolysis through Decoupling Electrolytes

Direct saline (seawater) electrolysis is a well-recognized system to generate active chlorine species for the chloride-mediated electrosynthesis, environmental remediation and sterilization over the past few decades. However, the large energy consumption originated from the high cell voltage of traditional direct saline electrolysis system, greatly restricts its practical application. Here, we report an acid-saline hybrid electrolysis system for energy-saving co-electrosynthesis of active chlorine and H2. We demonstrate that this system just requires a low cell voltage of 1.59 V to attain 10 mA cm-2 with a large energy consumption decrease of 27.7 % compared to direct saline electrolysis system (2.20 V). We further demonstrate that such acid-saline hybrid electrolysis system could be extended to realize energy-saving and sustainable seawater electrolysis. The acidified seawater in this system can absolutely avoid the formation of Ca/Mg-based sediments that always form in the seawater electrolysis system. We also prove that this system in the half-flow mode can realize real-time preparation of active chlorine used for sterilization and pea sprout production.

Selective and efficient H2 evolution upon NH3BH3 hydrolysis at subzero temperatures

In the winter months, the temperature in most of the Earth stays below 0°C; the average temperature in winter at the South Pole is about -60°C. Therefore, it is urgent to develop efficient catalytic systems for selective and efficient H2 evolution upon NH3BH3 hydrolysis at subzero temperatures. For solving the freezing issue of water at below 0°C, herein, we have employed a facile and surfactant-free approach to synthesize M-Pt/C nanocomposites (M = Pd, Rh, Ru, Ni, Cu, or Fe), by the alloying of commercial Pt/C with Pd, Rh, Ru, Cu, Ni, or Fe for selective and efficient H2 evolution upon NH3BH3 hydrolysis in saline solution at below 0°C, even at -15°C. In addition, NH3BH3 hydrolysis over Pd-Pt/C in the saturated NaCl solution is utilized not only for safe hydrogen production but also for its in situ hydrogenation reduction in organic chemistry, which could avoid using dangerous hydrogen cylinders.

Highly electron-deficient ultrathin Co nanosheets supported on mesoporous Cr2O3 for catalytic hydrogen evolution from ammonia borane

The hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH3BH3) on metal-based heterogeneous catalysts under light irradiation has been considered as an efficient technique for hydrogen (H2) generation, in which the activity of the catalyst can be improved by increasing the electron density of the active metal. However, studies focused on reducing the electron density of the active metal are rare. Here, we report an electron density manipulation strategy to prepare highly electron-deficient ultrathin Co nanosheets via transferring nanosheets to support mesoporous Cr2O3 by simple one-step in situ reduction (denoted as Co/Cr2O3). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra confirm the formation of electron-deficient Co nanosheets and the Co-O-Cr bond due to electron transfer from the nanosheets to mesoporous Cr2O3. Importantly, the Co-O-Cr bond can work as a bridge to accelerate the electron transfer under light irradiation and then improve the electron-deficiency degree of Co nanosheets. As a result, the optimal Co/Cr2O3 exhibits a high intrinsic catalytic performance with the turnover frequency (TOF) value of 106.8 min-1 and significantly reduces the activation energy (Ea) to 16.8 kJ mol-1 under visible light irradiation, which make it among the best ever recorded monometallic Co-based catalyst with enriched electrons. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation results suggest that the electron-deficient Co nanosheets are responsible for the greatly decreased H2O activation and dissociation energy barriers and then the acceleration of the evolution of H2. The work provides a new perspective for designing high efficiency catalysts for H2 production, which is beneficial for relative energy conversion and storage catalysis.

Biotemplate synthesis of a Co3O4 microtube sensor for fast triethylamine detection

A low operating temperature and short response/recovery time are essential factors for sensors. Hence, it is necessary to create a sensor that can quickly detect target gas at a relatively low temperature. In this work, Co₃O₄ microtube based sensors were fabricated by a bio-template method using absorbent cotton. Co₃O₄ microtube sensors prepared in different concentrations of a salt solution displayed different sensitivities to triethylamine (TEA). The Co₃O₄-0.10 microtube sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity to TEA at 160 °C. The response of the Co₃O₄-0.10 sensor to 100 ppm TEA gas was 31.27 and the detection limit of TEA was 50 ppb. Meanwhile, the Co₃O₄-0.10 sensor also showed a short response/recovery time, such as 95 s/38 s to 100 ppm TEA, high selectivity, a good linear relationship (R² = 0.994 for 1-100 ppm TEA and R² = 0.991 for 50-1000 ppb TEA gas), fine repeatability and long-term stability, and strong humidity resistance. Thus, Co₃O₄ microtube based sensors prepared using a bio-template method have potential application prospects for the detection of TEA gas.
