Shape-dependent synthesis and photocatalytic degradation by Cu2O nanocrystals: Kinetics and photocatalytic mechanism

Rational synthesis of two isostructural thiophene-containing metal-organic frameworks toward photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

In this work, thiophene moieties (as the crucial functional groups) have been successfully incorporated into the skeleton of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by using thienyl-substituted triazole ligands. Reaction of AgCF3SO3 with 3-phenyl-5-(2-thienyl)-1,2,4-triazole (PTTzH) or 3,5-bis(2-thienyl)-1,2,4-triazole (BTTzH) afforded two isostructural MOFs (AgTz-3 and AgTz-4) in gram-scale. AgTz-4 with higher thiophene content showed significantly stronger photocatalytic activity than AgTz-3 with lower thiophene content. Noteworthy, the photodegradation rate constants of AgTz-4 were 0.055 mg·L-1·min-1 for rhodamine B and 0.24 min-1 for salazosulfapyridine, which is comparable or even higher than some MOF-based materials reported in the literature. More importantly, AgTz-4 demonstrated good reusability and stability after four cycles of photodegradation. Our experimental results revealed that the enhanced photodegradation efficiency can be attributed to the increased light absorption capacity and optimized band structure of Ag-MOFs resulting from the introduction of thiophene groups into MOF structures.

Mechanism analysis of surface structure-regulated Cu2O in photocatalytic antibacterial process

The effects of exposing crystal planes and vacancy defect engineering can induce unique surface atom arrangements that strongly influence the physicochemical properties of semiconductor materials. This paper used Cu2O with different surface structures as a research model. A liquid-phase method was chosen for surface structure regulation to prepare Cu2O semiconductors (Vo-(111)Cu2O, Vo-(100)Cu2O, Vo-(110)Cu2O) with different exposed crystalline surfaces analyze the antibacterial mechanisms of other faceted models in the photodynamic antibacterial process. The bactericidal effect of Vo-(111)Cu2O (40 μg/mL, 100%) was better than that of Vo-(100)Cu2O and Vo-(110)Cu2O. DFT simulations show that the photocatalytic antimicrobial performance of Vo-(111)Cu2O is improved due to surface defect structures caused by unsaturated coordination bonds and suspension bonds on its exposed crystalline surfaces. The suspension bonds act as active centres for trapping electrons, leading to a lower carrier complexation rate on the material surface. The antibacterial mechanism of Vo-(111)Cu2O showed that oxidative sterilization by reactive oxygen species (ROS) was the dominant factor (61.98%) in the antibacterial process. The most potent depolarizing effect on E. coli, the highest copper ion solubilization, and the highest ROS yield. Therefore, ROS oxidative sterilization, copper ion leaching sterilization, and contact damage synergistically affect E. coli from the inside out.

Preparation and Photoelectric Properties of Pr-Doped p-Cu2O Thin Films Photocatalyst Based on Energy Band Structure Regulation

A Pr-doped p-Cu2O thin film was prepared on indium tin oxide conductive glass by electrochemical deposition; the effect of Pr doping on the structure, morphology, and physicochemical properties of p-Cu2O was investigated. The results show that with the increase in Pr doping amount, the particle size of p-Cu2O increases, the absorption boundary redshifts, and the band-gap width decreases. Pr doping increases the flat band potential and carrier concentration of p-Cu2O; when the doping amount is 1.2 mM, the carrier concentration reaches 1.14 × 1024 cm-3. Compared with pure p-Cu2O, the charge transfer resistance of Pr-doped p-Cu2O decreases and the photocurrent and open circuit voltage increase, indicating that the carrier transfer rate is accelerated, and the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes is effectively improved. The result of a norfloxacin photocatalytic degradation experiment showed that the degradation rate of norfloxacin increased from 52.3% to 76.2% and Pr doping effectively improved the photocatalytic performance of p-Cu2O. The main reasons for enhancing the photocatalytic performance are that the band gap of Pr-doped p-Cu2O decreases, the Fermi level of Cu2O is closer to the valence band position, the hole concentration near the valence band, and the oxidation capacity increases, and more h+ oxidize norfloxacin molecules. In addition, the Pr in Pr-Cu2O acts as a conductor to guide electrons on the guide band to the crystal surface, which increases the contact between photogenerated electrons and dissolved oxygen, which is conducive to the formation of the active species ·O2- and can effectively reduce the recombination of photogenerated carriers. In the process of photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin, the main active species are ·O2-, ·OH, and h+, which play auxiliary roles. TOC tests show that the norfloxacin molecules can be effectively degraded into small molecule organic matter, CO2, and H2O in the presence of Pr-doped p-Cu2O.
