Abstract
AIM To develop and validate a self-administered population-specific survey, available in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, which investigates the prevalence of voice symptoms and perceptions of risk factors associated with training among prospective teachers. METHODS The present study had three stages: the first stage included a literature review and content validation by experts that supported the survey development. From this phase, we defined five aspects of the Prospective Teacher's Voice Questionnaire (PTVQ): (1) target population, (2) research objectives, (3) questions to be included, (4) scales for the answers, and (5) relevance, comprehensiveness, clarityclarity, and understandability of the questions. This process was performed in parallel for the three languages (Spanish, Portuguese, and English). The second stage included pilot testing. This involved administering the first draft of the survey to a group of 120 students to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the survey instrument, identify any potential problems with the survey, and refine the instrument based on feedback from the pilot participants. The third stage includes the restructuring of the questionnaire's voice quality section to eliminate redundant questions. Through Principal Component Analysis, multicollinear variables were condensed, facilitating the removal of redundant items, and ensuring that the final questionnaire comprised only the most relevant and discriminative questions. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The final version of the survey, available in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, consists of four sections with a total of 57 questions. The development of the PTVQ represents a significant step toward better understanding and addressing voice disorders among prospective teachers. Future research could further refine the questionnaire and explore its predictive validity in identifying individuals at risk of voice disorders early in their teaching careers. Additionally, interventions based on the findings from the PTVQ could be developed to support the voice health and well-being of prospective teachers, ultimately improving teaching quality and job satisfaction in educational settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND College professors are at an elevated risk of developing voice disorders due to increased vocal demands associated with their working conditions, including high background noise levels, long reverberation times, prolonged voice use duration, and large class sizes. However, the impact of online classes on vocal health among college professors remains unclear. OBJECTIVE This longitudinal study aimed to characterize voice changes associated with online teaching among female Colombian college professors. METHODS Thirteen female college professors teaching online classes completed an online survey that included questions about voice functioning, working conditions, the Spanish translation of the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI), and the Spanish translation of the Voice-Related Quality of Life. Instrumental measurements were also performed, including environmental background noise levels, hearing screening, and voice recordings before and after a synchronous online class. RESULTS This study found a decreased fundamental frequency in connected speech (reading) associated with the number of students per class, the number of classes per week, and background noise levels measured with a sound level meter. L1L0 was statistically smaller among experienced teachers with higher background noise levels compared with less-experienced colleagues in quieter classes. 1558kHz was statistically associated with the average number of students, whereas HNR was slightly higher for professors with more students and more classes per week. CONCLUSION The findings suggest that online teaching has important implications for voice production among participating teachers. This study highlights the importance of considering working conditions during online classes when designing workplace prevention programs for college professors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to describe daily vocal demands, perceptions and knowledge as reported by occupational voice users. STUDY DESIGN A descriptive, cross-sectional research design was employed. METHODS A survey on vocal demands, perceptions and knowledge was distributed to 102 occupational voice users via a snowball sampling technique. RESULTS Slightly more than half of the participants (55%) reported using their voice for work 36.5 hours a week on average (SD = 15.5, range: 33-40). Participants reported that, on average, their daily voice use is 6.3 hours (SD = 2.7) for work and the majority (81%) reported a decrease in voice quality after work; Three-quarters (75%) also reported vocal fatigue at the end of day. Approximately one-third (33%) reported being exposed to environments where they are expected to shout, scream or cheer loudly. More than half of the participants (61%) reported that they have previously received vocal health education but 40% reported that they felt this training was insufficient. High vocal demands are significantly correlated to an increase in perceived vocal handicap rs = 0.242; (P = 0.018), tiredness of voice rs = 0.270; (P = 0.008), physical discomfort rs = 0.217; (P = 0.038) as well as how occupational voice users experience improvement of symptoms with rest rs = -0.356 (P < 0.001). Other risk factors highlighted by occupational voice users are the ingestion of liquid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks, smoking or the presence of chronic cough, chronic laryngitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. CONCLUSIONS Occupational voice users are subjected to high daily vocal demands that can be seen to be linked to vocal fatigue, changes in voice quality and vocal symptoms experienced. It is essential that occupational voice users as well as treating clinicians are aware of certain significant predictors of both vocal handicap and vocal fatigue. These findings provide insights for developing strategies for training and cultivating vocal health consciousness and preventive voice care initiatives that focus on occupational voice users in South Africa.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many teachers report discomfort and a decrease in the quality of aerodynamic, respiratory, and cervical vocal aspects as well as of vocal self-assessment. OBJECTIVE Characterize and correlate measurements of Sound Pressure Levels, Maximum Phonation Time of /a/, Maximum Respiratory Pressures, Voice-Related Quality of Life and cervical pain in teachers with vocal and musculoskeletal complaints and no organic vocal fold lesions, and compare with normative values. METHODS Retrospective study with 56 teachers. Anamnesis, video laryngoscopy, hearing screening, measurements of sound pressure and maximum phonation time, and manovacuometry were performed. Self-assessment protocols for Voice-Related Quality of Life and Neck Disability Index were completed. RESULTS there was significant higher Sound Pressure Levels; significant lower Maximum Phonation Time of /a/, Maximum Expiratory Pressure, and total and physical scores of Voice-Related Quality of Life; most participants had mild cervical disability; there was a negative correlation between Maximum Expiratory Pressure and Neck Disability Index, between Maximum Inspiratory Pressure and Maximum Sound Pressure Level, and between Neck Disability Index and Voice-Related Quality of Life. CONCLUSION The results showed that there are damages and inadequacies in teachers' vocal production which affect their quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the conditions of use of the voice by professionals, and to their health education.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to verify the effect after short-term intensive therapy with the Finger Kazoo technique on vocal and aerodynamic measures of dysphonic female teachers. METHOD blind randomized clinical trial. Fifteen female teachers without structural disorders of vocal folds and nine with vocal nodules participated in the study groups. Yet, nine female teachers without structural disorders and eight with vocal nodules in the control groups. The following variables were measured pre and post-therapy: minimum and maximum fundamental frequency: forced vital capacity; simple phonic coefficient; compound phonic coefficient; ratio between maximum phonation time of /a/ and expected maximum phonation time. RESULTS no statistical significance was observed in the intra and intergroup analyses in any of the measures. CONCLUSION in this group of female teachers, it was not possible to show a positive effect of short-term and intensive therapy with the Finger Kazoo technique on the vocal measures of minimum and maximum fundamental frequency, forced vital capacity, simple phonic coefficient, compound phonic coefficient, and the relationship between maximum phonation time of /a/ and expected maximum phonation time.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the frequency of sex, race, and ethnicity reporting and proportional representation in funded, noncancerous voice clinical trials to determine the state of compliance with National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for inclusivity in clinical research. METHOD Clinical trials registered with the NIH/U.S. National Library of Medicine between January 1988 and September 2021 were analyzed. Primary reports of the trials were obtained from clinicaltrials.gov and PubMed. Outcomes included the proportion of trials reporting sex, race, and ethnicity and the proportion of participants by sex, race, and ethnicity in the trials. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to analyze the data with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) reported. RESULTS The search yielded 46 research studies. After inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied and attempts to locate studies were conducted, 11 total articles were ultimately evaluated. Descriptively, there were more female subjects, yet overall, no significant difference in sex distribution (χ2 = 0.07, p = .75, 95% CI [-0.25, -0.19]). Race and ethnicity were only reported in two clinical trials. Black participants were underrepresented in one clinical trial (χ2 = 4.93, p = .02, 95% CI [-0.11, -0.02]), whereas Hispanic participants were underrepresented in a second trial (χ2 = 11.27, p < .00, 95% CI [-0.20, - 0.13]). CONCLUSIONS This preliminary analysis highlights the disparities in race and ethnicity recruitment and reporting in noncancerous voice clinical trials. There is a need for strategic recruitment strategies and improved reporting practices to adhere to the NIH inclusivity directives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Researchers have studied various populations with high vocal doses and prevalence of related voice disorders. Teachers, singers, and university students are three such populations that have been examined extensively. No studies to date, however, have examined the voice use of music therapists and compared their voice use to these other populations. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this investigation was to examine voice dosimeter data including phonation duration and percentage, amplitude, frequencies, and distance dose acquired over contiguous 7 day (1 week) periods by preservice music therapists, preservice music teachers, and other university students in concert with daily voice use surveys. STUDY DESIGN This is a quantitative descriptive design. METHODS Eight female students of varied majors (music therapy, music education, vocal performance, elementary education, and "other") in their third year of university study wore a voice dosimeter during all waking hours for 7 days. The dosimeter recorded voicing time, percentage, frequency, and estimated amplitude. Participants also completed surveys related to several parameters of vocal health, the number of hours they slept, and their voice care. RESULTS Participants experienced relatively low vocal doses during the week. Music majors experienced more voice use than nonmusic majors. Some of the highest doses occurred during teaching demonstrations and leading of music therapy practicum sessions. CONCLUSION Preservice music therapists and preservice music teachers may experience extreme increases in vocal load when they enter the field. Absent training protocols, these increases could be detrimental to their vocal health and long-term viability as practitioners.

Abstract
Effects of cumulative vocal demands on voice performance of student clinicians majoring in speech-language pathology were observed at three distinct points over the period of an academic semester. Acoustic and aerodynamic voice parameters were monitored in controlled and natural settings; participants also provided subjective information related to their voice usage. Comparisons of voice parameters in student clinicians repeatedly measured throughout an extended period of time did not lead to statistically significant differences. Self-reported data revealed a satisfactory level of knowledge and awareness regarding voice concerns in this population. These outcomes suggested consistent voice stability in this group, over the cycle of an academic semester.

Abstract
The multiple social and performance demands placed on college/university singers could put their still-developing voices at risk. Previous ambulatory monitoring studies have analyzed the duration, intensity, and frequency (in Hertz) of voice use among such students. Nevertheless, no studies to date have incorporated the simultaneous acoustic voice quality measures into the acquisition of these measures to allow for direct comparison during the same voicing period. Such data could provide greater insight into how young singers use their voices, as well as identify potential correlations between vocal dose and acoustic changes in voice quality. The purpose of this study was to assess the voice use and the estimated voice quality of college/university singing students (18-24 years old, N = 19). Ambulatory monitoring was conducted over three full, consecutive weekdays measuring voice from an unprocessed accelerometer signal measured at the neck. From this signal, traditional vocal dose metrics such as phonation percentage, dose time, cycle dose, and distance dose were analyzed. Additional acoustic measures included perceived pitch, pitch strength, long-term average spectrum slope, alpha ratio, dB sound pressure level 1-3 kHz, and harmonic-to-noise ratio. Major findings from more than 800 hours of recording indicated that among these students (a) higher vocal doses correlated significantly with greater voice intensity, more vocal clarity and less perturbation; and (b) there were significant differences in some acoustic voice quality metrics between nonsinging, solo singing, and choral singing.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This paper reports a preliminary study which trialled a novel approach for measuring speech output and social participation. The amount of phonation was accumulated via an objective measure called an Ambulatory Phonation Monitor (APM). PURPOSE (1) To establish whether adults who stutter will tolerate wearing an APM for an extended period of time (three days), (2) to test whether the APM can accumulate useful data about the amount of phonation adults who stutter produce in the course of a normal day and (3) to examine a possible relationship between stuttering severity and amount of phonation. METHOD Three adults who stutter wore an APM for three consecutive days during their waking hours. Each completed a questionnaire regarding the device and kept a speech diary outlining daily speaking activities and self-reported stuttering severity. APM data regarding amount of phonation was collected, analysed and compared with the participants' speech diaries. RESULTS Each adult tolerated wearing the APM and while they felt comfortable speaking wearing the device, it was somewhat cumbersome. Variations in the amount of speaking across each day and in different speaking situations were evident. For two participants there was a positive correlation between phonation time and severity rating. CONCLUSIONS Preliminary data suggests that the APM can provide valuable information about the amount adults who stutter speak. The APM is sufficiently sensitive to differentiate variations in the amount of phonation during different speaking situations. These favourable preliminary results suggest the value of a larger scale study. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The reader will be able to: (a) describe the different aspects of stuttering currently routinely measured in clinical practice; (b) discuss the limitations of current measurement procedures; (c) discuss the advantages of speech measures obtained by an Ambulatory Phonation Monitor APM); (d) describe the perspectives of adults who stutter who have worn an APM to measure phonation time.
