Abstract
Research on the adaptations talkers make to different communication conditions during interactive conversations has primarily focused on speech signals. We extended this type of investigation to two other important communicative signals, i.e., partner-directed gaze and iconic co-speech hand gestures with the aim of determining if the adaptations made by older adults differ from younger adults across communication conditions. We recruited 57 pairs of participants, comprising 57 primary talkers and 57 secondary ones. Primary talkers consisted of three groups: 19 older adults with mild Hearing Loss (older adult-HL); 17 older adults with Normal Hearing (older adult-NH); and 21 younger adults. The DiapixUK "spot the difference" conversation-based task was used to elicit conversions in participant pairs. One easy (No Barrier: NB) and three difficult communication conditions were tested. The three conditions consisted of two in which the primary talker could hear clearly, but the secondary talkers could not, due to multi-talker babble noise (BAB1) or a less familiar hearing loss simulation (HLS), and a condition in which both the primary and secondary talkers heard each other in babble noise (BAB2). For primary talkers, we measured mean number of partner-directed gazes; mean total gaze duration; and the mean number of co-speech hand gestures. We found a robust effects of communication condition that interacted with participant group. Effects of age were found for both gaze and gesture in BAB1, i.e., older adult-NH looked and gestured less than younger adults did when the secondary talker experienced babble noise. For hearing status, a difference in gaze between older adult-NH and older adult-HL was found for the BAB1 condition; for gesture this difference was significant in all three difficult communication conditions (older adult-HL gazed and gestured more). We propose the age effect may be due to a decline in older adult's attention to cues signaling how well a conversation is progressing. To explain the hearing status effect, we suggest that older adult's attentional decline is offset by hearing loss because these participants have learned to pay greater attention to visual cues for understanding speech.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is limited research in group communication treatment for people with aphasia but existing studies report benefits of gesture to support conversation. Gesture supports conversation through recipient design features and reducing linguistic demands of lexical retrieval and formulation. Additionally, gesture serves an affiliative function. However, the relationship between gesture use and gestural capacity has not been widely examined. As part of a larger study on group cohesiveness and conversation, this investigation examined the patterns of co-speech gesture within authentic conversations among persons with aphasia to discern the functions of gesture use for the participants, changes in the use of gesture over time, and the relationship between gesture use and gesture ability. METHODS Conversation Analysis (CA) was applied in an embedded case-study design. Three participants received an academic semester of group and individual conversation-based treatment according to Facilitating Authentic Conversation (Damico et al., 2015). Four conversations from the treatment were selected and transcribed for multi-modality communication with CA conventions applied, and then cyclically analysed for patterns of gesture. RESULTS Participants demonstrated gesture that served social and linguistic functions: ratifying clinicians' proxy turns, turn-allocation, turn repair, relaying novel visual information, emphasizing content, demonstrating affiliation with the prior speaker, demonstrating their assessment others' talk, and demonstrating humor. All three participants showed an increased rate of gesture per turn and increasingly used gesture to repair conversation breakdown. Increased gesture use over the course of the semester coincided with increased scores for pantomime on the Porch Index of Communicative Ability (Porch, 1981, PICA). CONCLUSION Individuals with aphasia demonstrated increased use of gesture for varied purposes and improved gestural processing following a semester of conversation-based treatment. This is significant because gesture is an effective support for the repair of conversation breakdown typical of persons with aphasia.

Abstract
Hearing aids (HA) are a fundamental component in restoring auditory function; however, they cannot completely alleviate all problems encountered by adults with hearing impairment. The aim of this study is twofold. Firstly, we assess the health-related quality of life and coping strategies of experienced HA users. Secondly, we assess whether HA users can benefit from auditory training. To this end, 40 participants who had worn HAs for more than 6 months participated in this study. Half of the participants received auditory training, while the other half served as a passive control. The training consisted of a personalized training scheme, with outcome measures including speech in noise perception in free-field and via direct streaming to the HA, phoneme identification, cognitive control, and health-related quality of life. Results showed that experienced HA users reported a relatively good quality of life. Health-related quality of life was correlated with aided speech perception in noise, but not with aided pure tone audiometry. Coping strategies were adaptive, leading to improved communication. Participants showed improvements in trained tasks, consonant identification, and speech in noise perception. While both groups yielded improved speech in noise perception at the end, post hoc analysis following a three-way interaction showed a significantly larger pre-post difference for the trained group in the streaming condition. Although training showed some improvements, the study suggests that the training paradigm was not sufficiently challenging for HA users. To optimize daily life listening, we recommend that future training should incorporate more exercises in noise and focus on cognitive control.

Abstract
Background Hearing loss affects over 1.5 billion individuals worldwide. Their disability and limited access to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic information make them suffer a greater degree than ordinary people. However, the quantitative studies on the implementation of behavior compliance with preventive health measures for vulnerable groups such as people with hearing disability were limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the compliance with pandemic-related protective health measures among people with hearing disability. Design A cross-sectional survey, population-based cohort study of students aged 12-26 years with and without hearing disability was conducted. Behavioral compliance with preventive health measures was collected from the general education institutions and special education schools using an online questionnaire. Logistic regression and structural equation model were used to determine the associations among the demographic variables, different degrees of mental health status and psychological impacts, and preventive health behaviors. Results Among 1,589 participants, 485 (30.5%) students are with hearing disability (SHD), and 1,104 (69.5%) students with normal hearing (SNH). The SHD has a significantly lower degree of behavioral compliance with the preventive health measures than SNH has. Hearing disability and anxiety [odds ratio (OR) = 1.54-1.76, p < 0.05] are risk factors for avoiding sharing of utensils during mealtime. Hearing disability, male sex, father's education level, mother's profession, bedtime after 11:00 p.m., anxiety, and depression (OR = 1.45-2.95, p < 0.05) are risk factors for hand hygiene. Male sex (OR = 2.13, p < 0.001) is risk factor and being aged below 18 years old (OR = 0.62, p = 0.03) is protective factor for wearing masks. Exercise (OR = 0.32-0.70, p < 0.01) is the most protective factor for preventive health behaviors. Mediating effect of mental health status and psychological impacts between hearing level and the compliance with the preventive health measures was -0.044 (95% CI: -0.068 to -0.027). Conclusions To reduce the risk of contraction, update pandemic information, essential communication services, extra assistance, and support should be provided to these disabled persons who are more susceptible to a public health emergency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the lived experience of social challenges and emotional distress in relation to hearing loss and the coping mechanisms employed to manage them. DESIGN Two focus groups and two one-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted during February 2020. Transcripts were first inductively analysed to identify experiential categories of social and emotional difficulty, and then deductively analysed using Leventhal's self-regulation model to identify how individuals conceptualised these experiences and the coping mechanisms employed to manage them. STUDY SAMPLE Adults with hearing loss and self-reported emotional distress due to their hearing loss (n = 21) and their significant others (n = 9). RESULTS Participants described their social and emotional experiences of hearing loss in terms of negative consequences (social overwhelm, fatigue, loss, exclusion), identity impact (how they perceive themselves and are perceived by others), and emotional distress (frustration, grief, anxiety, loneliness, and burdensomeness). While many participants described a general lack of effective coping strategies, others described employing coping strategies including avoidance (helpful and unhelpful), controlling the listening environment, humour, acceptance, assertiveness, communication repair strategies, and accepting support from significant others. CONCLUSION Many participants described a lack of effective coping strategies and tended to rely on avoidance of social interaction,deepening their isolation and loneliness.
