Influence of temporally variable groundwater flow conditions on point measurements and contaminant mass flux estimations

Flow field dynamics and high ethanol content in gasohol blends enhance BTEX migration and biodegradation in groundwater

Gasohol spills may easily descend through the soil column down and impact sensitive receptors as contaminants dissolve into the groundwater. Gasoline formulations are commonly blended with ethanol to alleviate environmental and economic issues associated with fossil fuels. However, the amount of ethanol added to gasoline and the groundwater hydraulic regime can significantly affect BTEX plume dynamics and lifespan. In this study, two long-term (5 and 10 years) field-scale gasohol releases with ethanol contents of 85% (E85) and 24% (E24), respectively, were assessed to discern the different dynamics undergone by gasohol blends. Statistical, geochemical, microbiological and trend approaches were employed to estimate the influence of groundwater flow variations on ethanol and dissolved BTEX transport, and the associated biodegradation rates of different gasohol blend spills. Ethanol and BTEX groundwater flow were quantified in terms of breakthrough curve characteristics, plume centroid positions and spreading, source depletion and mass degradation rates. In addition, bromide migration was evaluated to address the contribution of flow-driven dissolution. Results revealed that the high amount of ethanol along with a fast and dynamic flow exerted a flushing behavior that enhanced BTEX dissolution, migration (vertical and horizontal) and concentrations in groundwater. The higher amount of ethanol in E85 enhanced BTEX dissolution (and bioavailability) relative to E24 site and led to faster biodegradation rates, which can be explained by the cosolvency effect and metabolic flux dilution. Therefore, flow field dynamics and high ethanol content in gasohol blends enhance BTEX migration and biodegradation in gasohol-contaminated sites. The balance of these factors is crucial to determine fate and transport of contaminants in field sites. These findings suggest that hydraulic regime should be spatially and temporally characterized to support decisions on appropriate monitoring plan and remedial strategies for gasohol spills.

Dynamics of Hydrology and Anaerobic Hydrocarbon Degrader Communities in A Tar-Oil Contaminated Aquifer

Aquifers are typically perceived as rather stable habitats, characterized by low biogeochemical and microbial community dynamics. Upon contamination, aquifers shift to a perturbed ecological status, in which specialized populations of contaminant degraders establish and mediate aquifer restoration. However, the ecological controls of such degrader populations, and possible feedbacks between hydraulic and microbial habitat components, remain poorly understood. Here, we provide evidence of such couplings, via 4 years of annual sampling of groundwater and sediments across a high-resolution depth-transect of a hydrocarbon plume. Specialized anaerobic degrader populations are known to be established at the reactive fringes of the plume. Here, we show that fluctuations of the groundwater table were paralleled by pronounced dynamics of biogeochemical processes, pollutant degradation, and plume microbiota. Importantly, a switching in maximal relative abundance between dominant degrader populations within the Desulfobulbaceae and Desulfosporosinus spp. was observed after hydraulic dynamics. Thus, functional redundancy amongst anaerobic hydrocarbon degraders could have been relevant in sustaining biodegradation processes after hydraulic fluctuations. These findings contribute to an improved ecological perspective of contaminant plumes as a dynamic microbial habitat, with implications for both monitoring and remediation strategies in situ.

Monitoring transient groundwater fluxes using the Finite Volume Point Dilution Method

Classic estimates of groundwater fluxes are usually based on the application of Darcy's law, which can lead to large imprecisions in transient groundwater flow cases. There is a need for direct, in situ measurement techniques able to monitor time-variable groundwater fluxes. The investigation presented here demonstrates that the Finite Volume Point Dilution Method (FVPDM) is a promising technique for the continuous monitoring of groundwater fluxes. The experimental configuration consisted of monitoring transient groundwater fluxes generated by a multiple step pumping test, which was undertaken in the alluvial aquifer of the River Meuse, Liège (Belgium). Additionally, two FVPDM tests were simultaneously performed in two piezometers screened at two different depths in the alluvial aquifer. Tracer concentration changes during the FVPDM tests were interpreted as the consequences of Darcy flux changes in the alluvial aquifer, which was related to changes in the applied pumping rate. Piezometric levels were also monitored in piezometers located around the pumping well. The pumping test was interpreted using classical analytical solutions, and the FVPDM tests were interpreted using a new mathematical solution, which allows for calculating changes in Darcy fluxes based on the FVPDM tracer concentration evolution during transient groundwater flow conditions. The experiment demonstrated the FVPDM's ability to monitor, as well as be sensitive to changes in transient groundwater fluxes. The FVPDM interpretation also showed contrasting results between the upper part of the aquifer, which is made of loam and sand and slow groundwater flows prevail, and the lower part of the aquifer, which is made of gravels and pebbles and intense groundwater flows prevail.

Biodegradation: Updating the concepts of control for microbial cleanup in contaminated aquifers

Biodegradation is one of the most favored and sustainable means of removing organic pollutants from contaminated aquifers but the major steering factors are still surprisingly poorly understood. Growing evidence questions some of the established concepts for control of biodegradation. Here, we critically discuss classical concepts such as the thermodynamic redox zonation, or the use of steady state transport scenarios for assessing biodegradation rates. Furthermore, we discuss if the absence of specific degrader populations can explain poor biodegradation. We propose updated perspectives on the controls of biodegradation in contaminant plumes. These include the plume fringe concept, transport limitations, and transient conditions as currently underestimated processes affecting biodegradation.

Screening-level estimates of mass discharge uncertainty from point measurement methods

The uncertainty of mass discharge measurements associated with point-scale measurement techniques was investigated by deriving analytical solutions for the mass discharge coefficient of variation for two simplified, conceptual models. In the first case, a depth-averaged domain was assumed, consisting of one-dimensional groundwater flow perpendicular to a one-dimensional control plane of uniformly spaced sampling points. The contaminant flux along the control plane was assumed to be normally distributed. The second case consisted of one-dimensional groundwater flow perpendicular to a two-dimensional control plane of uniformly spaced sampling points. The contaminant flux in this case was assumed to be distributed according to a bivariate normal distribution. The center point for the flux distributions in both cases was allowed to vary in the domain of the control plane as a uniform random variable. Simplified equations for the uncertainty were investigated to facilitate screening-level evaluations of uncertainty as a function of sampling network design. Results were used to express uncertainty as a function of the length of the control plane and number of wells, or alternatively as a function of the sample spacing. Uncertainty was also expressed as a function of a new dimensionless parameter, Ω, defined as the ratio of the maximum local flux to the product of mass discharge and sample density. Expressing uncertainty as a function of Ω provided a convenient means to demonstrate the relationship between uncertainty, the magnitude of a local hot spot, magnitude of mass discharge, distribution of the contaminant across the control plane, and the sampling density.

Model based evaluation of a contaminant plume development under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in 2D bench-scale tank experiments

The influence of transverse mixing on competitive aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of a hydrocarbon plume was investigated using a two-dimensional, bench-scale flow-through laboratory tank experiment. In the first part of the experiment aerobic degradation of increasing toluene concentrations was carried out by the aerobic strain Pseudomonas putida F1. Successively, ethylbenzene (injected as a mixture of unlabeled and fully deuterium-labeled isotopologues) substituted toluene; nitrate was added as additional electron acceptor and the anaerobic denitrifying strain Aromatoleum aromaticum EbN1 was inoculated to study competitive degradation under aerobic /anaerobic conditions. The spatial distribution of anaerobic degradation was resolved by measurements of compound-specific stable isotope fractionation induced by the anaerobic strain as well as compound concentrations. A fully transient numerical reactive transport model was employed and calibrated using measurements of electron donors, acceptors and isotope fractionation. The aerobic phases of the experiment were successfully reproduced using a double Monod kinetic growth model and assuming an initial homogeneous distribution of P. putida F1. Investigation of the competitive degradation phase shows that the observed isotopic pattern cannot be explained by transverse mixing driven biodegradation only, but also depends on the inoculation process of the anaerobic strain. Transient concentrations of electron acceptors and donors are well reproduced by the model, showing its ability to simulate transient competitive biodegradation.

Comparison of groundwater transit velocity estimates from flux theory and water table recession based approaches for solute transport

Reliable information in transit time (TT) derived from transit velocity (TV) for rain or irrigation water to mix with groundwater (GW) and the subsequent discharge to surface water bodies (SWB) is essential to address the issues associated with the transport of nutrients, particularly nitrate, from GW to SWB. The objectives of this study are to (i) compare the TV estimates obtained using flux theory-based (FT) approach with the water table rise/recession (WT) rate approach and (ii) explore the impact of the differences on solute transport from GW to SWB. The results from a study conducted during two rainy seasons in the northeast humid tropics of Queensland, Australia, showed the TV varied in space and over time and the variations depended on the estimation procedures. The lateral TV computed using the WT approach ranged from 1.00 × 10(-3) to 2.82 × 10(-1) m/d with a mean of 6.18 × 10(-2) m/d compared with 2.90 × 10(-4) to 5.15 × 10(-2) m/d for FT with a mean of 2.63 × 10(-2) m/d. The vertical TV ranged from 2.00 × 10(-3) to 6.02 × 10(-1) m/d with a mean of 1.28 × 10(-1) m/d for the WT compared with 6.76 × 10(-3)-1.78 m/d for the FT with a mean of 2.73 × 10(-1) m/d. These differences are attributed to the role played by different flow pathways. The bypass flow pathway played a role only in WT but not in FT. Approximately 86-95% of the variability in lateral solute transport was accounted for by the lateral TV and the total recession between two consecutive major rainfall events. A comparison of TT from FT and WT approaches indicated the laterally transported nitrate from the GW to the nearby creek was relatively 'new', implying the opportunity for accumulation and to undergo biochemical reactions in GW was low. The results indicated the WT approach produced more reliable TT estimates than FT in the presence of bypass flow pathways.

Evaluation of transverse dispersion effects in tank experiments by numerical modeling: parameter estimation, sensitivity analysis and revision of experimental design

Transverse dispersion represents an important mixing process for transport of contaminants in groundwater and constitutes an essential prerequisite for geochemical and biodegradation reactions. Within this context, this work describes the detailed numerical simulation of highly controlled laboratory experiments using uranine, bromide and oxygen depleted water as conservative tracers for the quantification of transverse mixing in porous media. Synthetic numerical experiments reproducing an existing laboratory experimental set-up of quasi two-dimensional flow through tank were performed to assess the applicability of an analytical solution of the 2D advection-dispersion equation for the estimation of transverse dispersivity as fitting parameter. The fitted dispersivities were compared to the "true" values introduced in the numerical simulations and the associated error could be precisely estimated. A sensitivity analysis was performed on the experimental set-up in order to evaluate the sensitivities of the measurements taken at the tank experiment on the individual hydraulic and transport parameters. From the results, an improved experimental set-up as well as a numerical evaluation procedure could be developed, which allow for a precise and reliable determination of dispersivities. The improved tank set-up was used for new laboratory experiments, performed at advective velocities of 4.9 m d(-1) and 10.5 m d(-1). Numerical evaluation of these experiments yielded a unique and reliable parameter set, which closely fits the measured tracer concentration data. For the porous medium with a grain size of 0.25-0.30 mm, the fitted longitudinal and transverse dispersivities were 3.49×10(-4) m and 1.48×10(-5) m, respectively. The procedures developed in this paper for the synthetic and rigorous design and evaluation of the experiments can be generalized and transferred to comparable applications.

Modelling of spatial contaminant probabilities of occurrence of chlorinated hydrocarbons in an urban aquifer

In this study, a 3D urban groundwater model is presented which serves for calculation of multispecies contaminant transport in the subsurface on the regional scale. The total model consists of two submodels, the groundwater flow and reactive transport model, and is validated against field data. The model equations are solved applying finite element method. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to perform parameter identification of flow, transport and reaction processes. Coming from the latter, stochastic variation of flow, transport, and reaction input parameters and Monte Carlo simulation are used in calculating probabilities of pollutant occurrence in the domain. These probabilities could be part of determining future spots of contamination and their measure of damages. Application and validation is exemplarily shown for a contaminated site in Braunschweig (Germany), where a vast plume of chlorinated ethenes pollutes the groundwater. With respect to field application, the methods used for modelling reveal feasible and helpful tools to assess natural attenuation (MNA) and the risk that might be reduced by remediation actions.
