Transport of oxygen into granitic rocks: Role of physical and mineralogical heterogeneity

Travel time-based modelling of nitrate reduction in a fractured limestone aquifer by pyrite and iron carbonates under pore size limitation

We investigate denitrification in a ferric iron-containing fractured micritic limestone aquifer (Triassic Upper Muschelkalk) in south-west Germany by numerical simulations. Low porosity values (average value of 1%), partly small pore sizes of the rock matrix (~ 0.1 μm), and thus potential absence of microbial activity in the rock matrix suggest that denitrification is taking place solely in the fracture. A key question is whether the nitrate reduction derived from groundwater observations at 25 locations in the study area can be explained by a model that restricts microbial denitrification to the fractures. A travel time-based reactive transport model is developed to efficiently simulate long-term nitrate reduction on the catchment scale. The model employs a 2-D numerical reaction model describing the fracture-rock matrix system and parametric travel time distributions. The role of (i) biotic and abiotic iron oxidation, (ii) the type and amount of iron bearing minerals, and (iii) mass transfer between matrix and fracture are investigated. The simulations show that pyrite and siderite (used as surrogate for iron carbonates) together as a source of electron donors provide enough reduction potential to decrease the nitrate concentrations as observed in the field. This confirms the hypothesis that diffusion-controlled mass transfer of electron donors from the matrix to the fracture is sufficient to establish considerable denitrification in the fracture. Uncertainty in modelled concentrations is demonstrated as a result of both the geochemical aquifer properties and the unknown shape of travel time distributions.

Metagenomic Insights Into the Microbial Iron Cycle of Subseafloor Habitats

Microbial iron cycling influences the flux of major nutrients in the environment (e.g., through the adsorptive capacity of iron oxides) and includes biotically induced iron oxidation and reduction processes. The ecological extent of microbial iron cycling is not well understood, even with increased sequencing efforts, in part due to limitations in gene annotation pipelines and limitations in experimental studies linking phenotype to genotype. This is particularly true for the marine subseafloor, which remains undersampled, but represents the largest contiguous habitat on Earth. To address this limitation, we used FeGenie, a database and bioinformatics tool that identifies microbial iron cycling genes and enables the development of testable hypotheses on the biogeochemical cycling of iron. Herein, we survey the microbial iron cycle in diverse subseafloor habitats, including sediment-buried crustal aquifers, as well as surficial and deep sediments. We inferred the genetic potential for iron redox cycling in 32 of the 46 metagenomes included in our analysis, demonstrating the prevalence of these activities across underexplored subseafloor ecosystems. We show that while some processes (e.g., iron uptake and storage, siderophore transport potential, and iron gene regulation) are near-universal, others (e.g., iron reduction/oxidation, siderophore synthesis, and magnetosome formation) are dependent on local redox and nutrient status. Additionally, we detected niche-specific differences in strategies used for dissimilatory iron reduction, suggesting that geochemical constraints likely play an important role in dictating the dominant mechanisms for iron cycling. Overall, our survey advances the known distribution, magnitude, and potential ecological impact of microbe-mediated iron cycling and utilization in sub-benthic ecosystems.

Characterization of the Oxygen Transmission Rate of New-Ancient Natural Materials for Wine Maturation Containers

Today, there is a trend in enology promoting a return to the use of old natural materials for the manufacture of storage and maturation wine tanks. One of the most sought-after characteristics of these materials is their permeability to oxygen from the atmosphere to improve wines without this being a harmful process. The reference performance in wine aging is, without doubt, the oak barrel for its ability to oxidize wines in a controlled way, thus improving them. It would be possible to mature wines in containers in which the use of wood is not obligatory, as opposed to aging in oak barrels or foudres. This work presents the results of oxygen permeation analysis under test conditions typical of a tank containing wine, using materials, such as concrete and granite. The oxygen permeability of the materials tested was very diverse, typical of natural materials. The results showed that earthenware presents an excessive permeability, not only to atmospheric oxygen, but also to liquids and needs treatment before being used in liquid containers. Claystone and concrete can be impermeable to liquids, but maintain permeability to atmospheric oxygen-making them candidates for use in permeable tanks for wine maturation. Finally, granite has some very interesting characteristics, though thickness control is required when calculating the desired oxygen transmission rate.
